Soul Survivors: Cambodian Tradition Lives On At Sala Lodges

"To stay here is to inhabit actual, traditional Khmer wooden houses relocated to a Siem Reap site from across Cambodia, each built between 1956 and 1985 and once owned by everyone from carpenters to fishmongers, with the largest a former army barracks. Eleven stilted lodges feel like a serene, self-contained village, distinguished by intricate roofs and carvings, terrace whittlings, small vegetable patches, and even transplanted palm trees, with views over brimming gardens and sunken rice paddies. Sensitive updates add modern bathrooms, wifi, air conditioning, and handsome furniture from Rajasthan as a nod to nearby Angkor’s Hindu origins, while newly built public spaces (pool, bar, restaurant, and lodge) adopt a concrete look the Phnom Post called 'uber-chic' that complements rather than overwhelms the heritage dwellings. Born of a grueling de- and reconstruction inspired by Cambodia’s nomadic tradition—and occasionally sacrificing houses to repair others—the project aims to offer 'real living' in homes the founders insist 'have souls'; since opening in 2013, it’s hired locally and from the hospitality schools where the owners teach, even as most guests are foreign." - Mitchell Friedman

"A love for the lush Cambodian countryside and its charming rural architecture led four Swiss and French friends to open Sala Lodgesin 2012. They amassed 11 stunning examples of the wooden homes on stilts that punctuate the Khmer landscape, hiring carpenters to carefully select, disassemble, transport, and resurrect them on alush village-like property in Siem Reap not far from the temples. Each house has its unique style and story to tell—the oldest ones date to the late 1950s. Antiques, canopied beds, soft lighting, and pastel-hued fabrics, updated with essential modern-day luxuries like air conditioning and rain showers, now fill the majestic structures. Indigenous trees and plants like palm, papaya, and banana trees, and rice fields populated by little frogs and chirping crickets, are an ode to local village life. The generous layout of the rooms and verandas lends a languid atmosphere perfect for taking in the property’s enchanting sights and sounds while contemplating the splendor of Angkor."

Sala Lodges (Siem Reap, Cambodia) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"There was a time when Asia’s luxury villa hotels were pretty uniformly modernist and minimalist. But lately the traveling public has developed a taste for something a little more rustic, a little more handmade, and Sala Lodges, in Siem Reap, just a few miles from the temples at Angkor, are precisely that. These houses are no reproductions — they’re authentic handmade houses, some fifty years old or more, transported from all across the Cambodian countryside and reassembled here on this site." - Tablet Hotels

Word of mouth led us to Sala Lodges, so we decided to book our stay there. It was the first time I ever shed tears after leaving a place on vacation. There are simply no words to describe how wonderful Sala Lodges is. Not only because of the stunning setting, each house has its own unique story. The decoration is magnificent, and the gardens are incredibly beautiful. The restaurant and breakfast are exceptionally delicious, made with local products. But above all, it’s the warmth of the people at Sala Lodges that makes it so special. Truly exceptional. They were also so professional and made sure our stay was completely carefree. Everything was thought out down to the tiniest details, all done with a gentleness that’s hard to put into words. They also organize fantastic excursions that perfectly match your personal interests, always guiding you to the very best spots. We felt more than at home there. This is a place where we left a piece of our hearts. We will definitely return one day. An unforgettable place. Thank you. 🙏🏼🫶🏼

The Sala Lodges team embody hospitality and can be role models for 'how to do it' going beyond the fundamentals, and finding and executing the meaningful small touches, whether that be something physical as a gift/treat, or to the personalised service and recognition as individual guests. This isn't achieved by many hotel or hospitality organisations, but Sala Lodges achieve what it means to be hospitable. We experienced the balance of highly professional, but equally kind, warm and focused service from every team member. No exception.

The accommodations at Sala Lodges are beautifully unique. A visitor will not lack for comfort or amenities in the home of their choice. Being greeted each time I returned from the day's activities with a cool cloth and refreshing drink was just one of the many gracious and accommodating services I experienced. There is no question that Sala Lodges will be my chosen spot in Siem Reap when I return.

This place is magical. All the things that always matter are perfect: comfortable beds, blackout shutters, quiet, immaculately clean, good ac. But it's the extras that set this place apart: cold washcloths when you come in from a day of sightseeing, ice water brought to you when you swim in the gorgeous pool, smiles and greetings and personal escorting to the spa--all done without request. I travel a lot, and sincerely, this is the best hotel I've ever stayed at in my life. It was an extraordinary visit in an extraordinary place.

We just spent a wonderful four nights at Sala lodges. This property is truly special and the service is exceptional. The staff were attentive to our every need and are so warm and friendly. They even got up and made our breakfast and had fresh coffee ready for our sunrise temple tour. We are already planning our return to Cambodia and a second visit is on the cards. Thanks Arne and special thanks to Kunthea who went out of her way to make us welcome.

Sala Lodges was everything I had hoped it would be. It is interesting, stylish, comfortable, clean and welcoming. It was not the most expensive of the 7 hotels that we stayed in during our holiday but it was by far the nicest and by far the best value for money. I could not recommend it more highly. Visiting the Siem Reap area was made for us by staying at Sala Lodges.
