The 31 Best Places To Eat & Stay In Sydney - Sydney - The Infatuation

"While Americans are newly obsessed with eating tinned fish at restaurants, Sydney’s Continental Deli has been serving a full menu of canned things for years now. There’s a more formal dining room upstairs, but the bar is where you want to be, drinking a Mar-tinny (a martini that comes in a can) and eating various styles of canned fish, like sardines, mussels, and octopus. It’s an ideal spot for a low-commitment drink with friends, or an intimate date where you have to huddle close to hear each other over all the noise." - caroline clements 33

"Continental’sdownstairs bar—with a marble countertop and chilies, garlic, and aged ham hanging overhead—transports diners to Spain or Portugal. Despite the old-world ambience, however, the menu and staff are young and playful. Pop in for a meatball sub and vermouth at lunch, or enjoy king-crab-stuffed zucchini flowers before moving on to slow-roasted lamb in the upstairs bistro. In either case, complement your meal with something canned—the deli’s specialty— whether it’s the seafood plate of the day or a “Cosmopoli-tin” cocktail. A whole wall of canned and jarred concoctions are also available to take home. In 2018, a second, and larger, outpost of Continental Deli was opened in the CBD."

What an incredible spot. We arrived right at 12 for lunch as they opened, and it was already buzzing with a really vibey, energetic crowd. The service was exceptional. We sat at the bar and our waiter was fantastic, super knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about the food and drinks ♥️ The sandwiches were next-level. The ciabatta was soft, fresh, and packed with flavour. Everything was spot on. Loved the casual, lively atmosphere and the attention to detail 🥪 👌🏻 We’ll definitely be back. The martinis looked incredible, and with Estrella on tap, it’s the perfect mix 🍻

I have had the absolute pleasure of lunching here twice whilst in Sydney. It has been my favourite restaurant, and we visited a few notable ones in our two weeks. The whole experience was a revelation. The French dip will be in my dreams forevermore, sensational. Steak tartare, divine. The Lemon meringue exceeds my ability to praise, you just have to try it. Wines all delicious, staff knowledgeable, committed and delightful. I need to do a solid month here to see if I could get bored, but I somehow doubt it’s possible.

This was an extremely unsettling dining experience. When we went to pay the bill, we discovered that the total amount was much higher than what we had ordered. Only then did the staff admit that they had added the price of an extra bottle of wine to our bill. Fortunately, we had roughly calculated the cost of our food and drinks when ordering. We definitely won’t be coming back to this restaurant again.

How good is this place! Beautiful charming service (I’m looking at you Mitch!), relaxed and welcoming. The drinks are brilliant, the food is uncomplicated but perfect in execution. I could come here everyday.

Google
A one of a kind restaurant. Apart from the normal menu, their concept of canning food and cocktails is a delight. Martinis, Cosmopolitans and Margaritas in a can! Sounds weird but it’s a must try. Amazing. Love their steak tartare. Service was friendly and excellent both by Shaun and Mitch.

Everything was really good as always, except for one thing. The staff came across a bit overwhelming at the beginning—they asked us four times what we were drinking, even though we mentioned we were waiting for two more friends. It would be great if they could be a little more mindful and patient in situations like that. Once we ordered, the young lady who took care of us was absolutely lovely—warm, attentive, and made us feel very welcome. We really enjoyed our night here, as always!

This place is such a cosy spot with incredibly hospitable staff. I love coming back to try new dishes — every visit is a delight! The cheese platters are always amazing, and their flan on a tin is a must-try.

Google
What a lovely place just around the corner from the hustle and buzzle of King Street. Impressive vine list and the sandwiches was out of this world. It also had a very impressive Wine list. The staff was also excellent We will be back.

Yelp
This is an awesome little bar in Sydney, to pop in for a quick cocktail (in a can!) The style is a delicatessen with a bar back full of liquor bottles and letter signs (like a deli would have). They have some food but from what we saw it was more charcuterie platters (cheese and meats) and finger foods, with a few sandwich options. We were there for a quick drink and rest while we escaped the rain, so we didn't try any of the snacks, but they looked amazing. What we did try were the previously mentioned CANNED cocktails! Now these aren't just bought at the store canned cocktails, they are created and canned by The Continental Deli themselves! Now they are stored in a can, but don't worry, they do transport them to a glass for you, so no cutting your lips on a jagged can here. We had the Can-Hattan and the Mar-tinny. The martini was delicious and had the perfect amount of olive flavor. My husband had the Can-Hattan and he loved the sweet vermouth they used. I had a sip of his and YUM! If you're looking for a neat little spot to grab some interesting drinks, definitely give The Continental a try.

Yelp
Still coming back here and we do enjoy sitting at the counter and having the meatball sandwich (delicious).

Yelp
100% obsessed with this place. While wandering Darlinghurst I stumbled on a great ceramist shop and was told Newtown was the cool neighborhood to check out and explore. While wandering the neighborhood A local bottle seller told me the best place to grab a snack and a great glass of wine in the area was Continental Deli. Boy, was she right! The bar is gorgeous. Aesthetically this place is incredibly cute as hell with cute bartenders to boot. Incredibly helpful, they helped me choose a great glass of native natural wine. I loved my glass and the bar was the perfect spot to read my book and rest after walking the city all day. I will definitely be back and next time I'll partake in some tinned fish and charcuterie while enjoying their awesome wine selection.

Yelp
As a high-class hipster establishment in Newtown, this place is fantastic. It's a bit off the hustle and bustle part of Newtown, on a quieter street. There are two levels of the restaurant; both levels are tight squeezes and the entire has very limited tables. On the bottom floor is the bar, with a few high top tables for people who are okay with a bit of a louder area. Upstairs area has around 6 tables or so plus the bathroom. Make sure you make reservations ahead of time since this place is super popular and like I mentioned, there aren't many tables here. Now, onto the food. This place is a cannery. What the heck is that, you may ask. Don't worry, I thought similarly. Basically, they can everything they possibly can. Food, cocktails, t-shirts, everything. If you're waiting for a table, like my crew was even though we had a table reserved, you'll see near the entrance that they have their merchandise on sale, meaning all their branded t-shirts in cans. Their Newtown sour and their cosmopoli-tin were both delicious, but the Newtown sour definitely was a bit more of my vibe. The cosmopoli-tin was a bit... sour? I know what you're thinking... maybe the Newtown sour was on my tongue or I had them confused because I tried two. Nope, the cosmopoli-tin was not as sweet as I expected, but a bit more sour. We tried a variety of cheeses and meats, and all were great. No complaints except that they have small portions, but that's expected at a high-class hipster joint, so not a valid complaint. Definitely would come again if I wanted to treat myself a bit!

Yelp
The Continental Deli Bar and Bistro is the most recent project by the guys who opened up Porteno and Bodega. It harkens back to the 50s (like their other venues) and is simply a great place to hang out if you want to kill some time, as you have meat, cheese, wine, liquor, canned fish, sandwiches and everything else you can think of to imbibe in the afternoon while snacking on delicious food. They opened their doors today and I swung by for a sandwich. This place acts as a proper deli too so you can order cold cuts and canned goods for takeaway if you please, as well as their sandwiches. Service is great as everyone is super friendly, and the food presentation of their tasting boards for their meats and fish look awesome. Will have to try that next time. Had the Wurst Sandwich filled with all their Wurst meats. Hah, wurst. It's a meatier sandwich, and one of the servers also recommended the tuna as it was his favourite. The sandwich doesn't look like much but it's pretty delicious and the ciabatta goes great. Comes with some crisps on the side as well. Only complaint is it's a little expensive for what it is at $17, but it's well done.

Yelp
Well I've impressed my lady friend enormously. What more needs to be said?! Delicious and interesting food, same for the wine. We'll be back..

Yelp
We came here because my partner saw a picture on Instagram of their amazing '3 cheese toastie' (what is it with Sydney and their obsession with toasties?? I'm not complaining :P). This toastie includes Taleggio, Cheddar & Truffle cheese ... I did not need any convincing!! It's just off the main drag in Newtown, and is a hipster's delight. We sat at the bar, and watched the very very serious preparation of our toasties. Very. Serious. Business. ! Accompanying our toastie was a very nice (South Australian) pinot noir. The poshest cheese toastie meal I've ever had ... and the best - WOW!!! There were so many other meals we could have tried ... but if we come back here, it will be hard to go past having another toastie, haaha!

Yelp
Just had a fantastic meal at the Continental Deli on Australia St, Newtown. The venue is a standout! We loved every dish we ordered, the mackerel dish was devine, the cheeses, cured meats and the tinned Martini's were outstanding, the Side Car cocktail was my fav drink. Thanks for the great service Joe.

Yelp
Visited Australia from the U.S. on spring break, and this place is a must for anyone visiting from out of town! The atmosphere alone is worth every star of this rating. Food is fantastic, and drinks are great! Very friendly wait staff and bartenders. I have no complaints.

Yelp
Authentic European bistro style! My new favourite place to go every time I'm home sick and miss my mom's Spanish food :)

Yelp
This was our first visit and we were quite excited about the concept. However, all four of us left disappointed with the overall experience. The young waitress was very helpful - perhaps a little over zealous. We were upstairs and the noise level was very uncomfortable. The tapas approach was suggested rather than the $65 set menu. We found the tomato salad relatively tasteless. The "fish and chips platter" was an assortment of cold bottled or canned seafood served with a small side serve of crisps that looked like they had also been emptied from a packet. "Cat food" was my wife's description and not far off the mark. All the servings were cold, relatively bland and uninspiring. For variety and to try something actually cooked, we ordered the beef brisket which was tasty and tender but very modest in size. None of us had dessert as there was only ice cream available. Coffee was also not an option as the machine was out of action. The wine and bill overall were relatively expensive and I can't imagine any of us will return other than perhaps to enjoy some red wine and cheese at the downstairs bar which seemed to have a very attractive ambience as we made our way out to find a cafe.
