Inside Detroit’s Continued Evolution, and the Creatives Fueling It

"The Dabls Mbad African Bead Museum in Detroit was created by Olayami Dabls. It occupies nearly an entire city block and features a collection of African beads and sculptural installations. It aims to empower the Black community and represents Africa's relationship with Europe and the U.S. through art."

Returned this year, we really appreciate this place and learning about their offerings!! Loved looking at the amazing variety of beads and decorative pieces here!! Especially enjoyed my conversation with Dabls - hope I got that right - who told us the histories of his offerings, and sold us some very nice pieces at a very reasonable fare... Every square inch inside and out a great labor of love and preservation of History, I heartily recommend finding and discovering his beautiful wares and the stories behind them all, for yourself!! The various art installations merit a leisurely stroll to see it all! Next time we're in Michigan we WILL be back! <-- Kept this promise!💕

OMG, a Literal Gem, a great place filled with Energy and History and so much art. And the way art is, Open to Interpretation, makes everything you see here valuable in that aspect alone. All I can say is Enjoy. I posted a few pics but everything you see is better when in front of your own two eyes!

Went today with two of my best friends and had such an amazing experience! After looking around you can make your own bracelet which is what we did. Dabl told me his bead museum has been open for 23 years and the entire place is extraordinary with the best vibes. Will for sure be going back soon!

Love to check out the outside space a few times each year. Seeing the changes being made over time is exciting to me. The store itself is a lot of fun to roam around in too, I've been able to meet the owner/artist which I always appreciate. The other staff was very friendly and welcoming as well, just a great stop for something not mainstream.

So many wonderful things to be said about this museum let’s start off by mentioning how it is the only space in the city that allows people to have performances and hold events for absolutely free donations are asked but not required. The owner has a wealth of knowledge on African material culture, his extensive bead collection is a sight to see. The outside installation is entitled “IRON TEACHING ROCKS HOW TO RUST” which tells the story between Africans and Europeans using the Materials of, iron rocks, wood, and mirrors. There are approximately 11 individual installations that speak to How Iron (Europeans) has taught Rocks (Africans) how to rust. It’s a must see if you live history and culture.

Beautiful museum that challenges the normative style of museum. Completely grass roots with a talkative and amazing founder who will tell you how it came to be and what it's like owning such an unique museum. I surely hope they expand it more!
