On the Grid : HandleBar

"Hit the brakes halfway through the Grove and head into The Handlebar for a relaxing speed check. Right off the bat, you’ll likely be asked “Inside or out?” Feel free to curb slide up to the large bar surfaced with bike gears and get a load of the cycling memorabilia hanging above. Need a bit of vitamin D? Then chill out on their large sunny patio. Either way, you’ll enjoy a menu offering a variety of cocktails and local brew options to pair with authentic but approachable Russian cuisine. Special gems like braised pork and Ukranian blinchikis are a win. While many hit this spot for lunch or dinner, if you’re looking to switch speeds, cruise in on a weekend to enjoy a host of DJs and energetic dance parties. Have a good time, gutter bunnies!" - Manifest

Tracking Coronavirus’s Impact on Houston’s Restaurant Industry | Eater Houston

"I watched the perpetually packed Handlebar receive a 30-day liquor license suspension from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission after failing to comply with reduced-capacity mandates as part of Operation Safe Open, and learned that repeat violations could lead to a 60-day suspension." - Eater Staff

Google
Fun atmosphere, friendly faves. Great place to socialize and habe drinks. I love all the colors

Stacey W.

Google
Great staff and service, personality’s make the place, love the feel and the look of it. Food was good, exactly the kind of bar selection you would expect at a little local bar. It was comfortable. Funky place in a great way, funky smell not so great but worth tolerating for the people and experience. That moldy water smell old buildings get, nothing awful. I will be going again! Go have a handle pie and some pretzels, enjoy some music and take in the scene. Inclusivity reigns here and it’s beautiful.

Google
What a charming bar with a friendly atmosphere! I love the cycling memorabilia and I feel very safe with the pride flags hanging around the space. Our bartender was very cordial and was able to accommodate changes in our drinks without scorn. Food was decent! Love the garlic cheese bread and the T-Ravs were not gamey either. I enjoyed my Moscow Mule. There's even a rooftop patio that has a gorgeous view of Tower Grove. Perfect for a midsummer night. Delicious.

Alex G.

Google
Maybe the best bar in the Grove for dancing? But you probably already knew that. They’ve got a DJ spinning most nights and the patio is a very chill spot to cool down and strike up a conversation

Dena D.

Google
Just had drinks but they were so great! Had a very delicious mocktail!

Google
Molly out on the patio bar is super amazing! She's friendly and attentive and has the most beautiful smile! It's clear she enjoys her job and is happy to make the customers happy and comfortable!!

Google
What a cool find. We discovered, as owner hosted kids New Year event. But now I know that there is cozy bar in STL that serves tasty food and offers variety of drinks. And it looks like there is something new going here every day. Definitely, on the list to come back again…without kids :)

Micah S.

Google
Really good pretzels consider serving them with more cheese sauce. Edit: I think charging five dollars on Saturdays hurt the vibe and general safety feeling on the dance floor by turning away young people who dilute the creeps. Also, it needs to be darker on the dance floor at least after like 12, there's way too much light. I could've taken off a star because of the cheese sauce amount but I didn't out of good faith and hopes that handle bar management will increase cheese sauce portions . I'm not afraid to edit my review . Sorry, I used voice to text

Yelp
Fun place to go out on the weekends. The music can be hit or miss, last time we were there it was mostly techno without lyrics and wasn't what we were looking for, but it was nice to hang out in the outside area where they had fire pits going. Drinks are standard for a bar and not too expensive for what you get. Good size where people are always on the dance floor.

Yelp
As someone not from St.Louis, I really enjoyed my time here. We came in what appeared to be a karaoke night which was a pretty good time. It looks like we might've brought the party though haha. We were treated kindly and enjoyed our drinks and appetizers!
google avatar

Cassandra S.

Yelp
The bartenders are super friendly. We arrived on a trivia night and the staff did not disappoint. It's a smaller bar but more quant. I like that they have booths and the outside is nice - we'll decorated with art! The inside is just as decorated and very unique. It's kind of similar to a horseshoe shape. That bad area itself is a nice size. The drinks are pretty standard for pricing. Never had a disappointing night here! Highly recommended to check out! It's a blast!
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
Came in on a Saturday night and got to meet the amazing owner, Tatyana Telnikova. I enjoyed some drinks on draft, bartender choice on the patio, and the spinach and cheese handle pie. I can now say I've tried all of the handle pies, and they each are uniquely delicious. The bar is inclusive, and every single person who works there is welcoming and friendly. The ambiance is a homage to cycling with beautiful art murals throughout. They also use aluminum drinking cups to keep your drinks chilled. I love this place!

Rejoice O.

Yelp
The people here are great! Large facility with a nice back patio and live music! They have a great selection of signature cocktails, and delicious snacks! I ordered the Forgive and Fornet drink, which was so delicious, I ordered it twice! I also got the spinach, feta, and ricotta "Hamdlepie" which was delicious. The only reason for a 4-star instead of 5-star review is because I ordered a supreme pizza, and I didn't like the sauce, and could only see a couple of ingredients, but overall, I just didn't really like the taste of it, but I think most people do, so, try it for yourself!

Amelia A.

Yelp
The dance floor is tons of fun! There's a couple nice patios to go and chill. The Photo Booth is a big hit too!
google avatar

Natalya R.

Yelp
It is such a chill spot for me, with live music and a DJ playing in the background with good music!

Yelp
I work in the CWE but just haven't been loving the vibe in the area over the last couple years. It just doesn't feel that vibrant. The Gove is the complete opposite, it feels like something new and fun is popping up there every month. It has become a go to destination for lunch and afterwork drinks. Handlebar is a staple of the Grove. It isn't a flashy bar, but it has a decent indoor area and a nice patio. It is a bit of a dive, but that is my style. It has a modest selection of food (pizza is the standout), but it isn't a place I'd go to eat more snacks you get when just are drinking. Instead it is a nice spot to hit up if you just want to chill in a relaxed environment and have some drinks. The drinks aren't cheap, but they are relatively modestly priced. The bartenders were good and overall I have positive experiences when I've been to Handlebar.
google avatar

Taylor R.

Yelp
This place is the best vibe! Packed inside for a Thursday but worth it. Seating inside and out back. Great music. Photo booth and pool table. Great art work throughout the joint. And Tito's did a brief visit with free shots!
google avatar

M J.

Yelp
Was in town for the weekend and had heard good things. The service was very slow took about 30 min to give our order. The place looks fun and the music was good. The bathrooms were filthy and I had to request a new glass two times due to the one I was served first having old lipstick on it and the second being cracked. So dirty and disappointing.
google avatar

Cyndi G.

Yelp
Are you looking for a chill Sunday Funday? Handle bar in Tower Grove might be the move for you. The service is prompt and Cam the bartendar is super helpful. They had the vibes going with a live band playing, pool , and a Photo Booth. I only went for cocktails but next time I will have to try out the pizza and apps!

Aaron G.

Yelp
If this wasn't a gay bar 14 years ago, it certainly *seems* like one now, given that its intersection is the last vestige of St. Louis' centralized gay village, the preponderance of rainbow flags inside, that no one there on a weeknight was straight and other sundry vibes. A good, lower-key option for drinks than the gay clubs in the Grove.
google avatar

Audrey B.

Yelp
Handlebar is always a fun time. People who go there are friendly, positive vibes. You can count on there being dancing on the weekends, often a DJ. Very nonjudgmental, inclusive feel. Good sized space for it. Downsides surround the bar - the bartenders are typically not quite as friendly as the patrons. It does get really busy and they definitely get grumpy about it. It always takes forever to get a drink which wouldn't be so bad if they were nicer about it or if the drinks weren't overpriced.

Yelp
Stop 1 on The Grove bar crawl of Sept 2019. Pretty cool bike themed place seemed like a good a spot to start. Nice open area out back.

Yelp
Only outdoor seating right now. Order from your phone. New tab each order. Menu has changed, not updated yet. Food still delicious and an awesome spot to visit! @stl.foodie

Yelp
Someone told me about the cocktails of this place so decided to give it a try. I ordered their Master & Margarita. Honestly, I didn't quite enjoy the taste (a bit tasteless) but the drink was very strong which I couldn't complain! We also ordered beet fries which I was neutral about. We were there on a Wednesday night which was their Bingo night. The host dressed like a drag queen and he/she was hilarious. Not lots of ppl showed up that night but that didn't stop him/her from putting on spontaneous performances. Overall, it was an entertaining experience. Perfect spot to grab a drink if you are by yourself as well.

Yelp
Arrived a bit before 6 pm on a Friday and it was totally dead, maybe 2 other patrons inside. We wanted a bite and had to scan the QR code on the table to find a menu that didn't describe the food items to our satisfaction so we had to bother a server to ask what was in the HandlePies, what was in the toasted ravs, what's a RIP Stix... A bit annoying. We ordered HandlePies, the Meat Lovers Pizza, and a couple drinks. The food came out in decent time, the drinks a little before that. Everything was decent, just not memorable. Things were priced right. Service was okay. The interior is fun looking and apparently they schedule lots of events to bring people together. But for us, on that night, it was just OK.

Natalee V.

Yelp
Amazing place! Such a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. And they always have the BEST events going on! Hands down my favorite bar in STL

Yelp
Had a great time at trivia on Thursday night here. Starts at 7:00 pm and had such a fun environment. People were super friendly and the pretzel sticks were delicious! Soft and fluffy with an amazing, peppery cheese sauce for dipping. Test your luck with a mystery beer for only $3! The bar tender will pick a random can of beer for you!

Yelp
i hate to leave this review about a space that was previously safe and fun to go to, but i can no longer pretend handle bar is a place that i will willingly go back to. Multiple times the bouncers here have threatened my friends physically, one saying that he would use physical force to get rid of her or pay someone else to do it. Tonight he refused to return the ID of someone that was TWENTY THREE, and refused to call the police or get verification that his suspicion was real (even though he was wrong). I am tired of queer safe places being ruined by employees on a power trip and I feel like the owners of this establishment arent taking community concerns seriously
google avatar

Marie H.

Yelp
Cute spot with welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. They have a large patio if you prefer outdoor seating, and they sell s'mores kits if you happen to get a seat next to the fire pit. The pizza is.. fine. Thin crust with a variety of topping options. If I was a little more buzzed, I would have absolutely loved it. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Despite everything going on with Quarantine, Handlebar has adapted very well! I was a regular here in the "olden days", during which I loved this place for their unique speciality cocktails and great dancing scene. I can't dance here nowadays of course, but I'm happy to report that their cocktail game is stronger than ever! I ordered their cranberry infused Moscow Mule kit to enjoy with friends (at a distance of course). Ordering online was very simple and the order was ready for curbside pickup right on time and the person who brought me my order was in full PPE. It was a little pricier than I expected, but here's why it was worth every penny: First off, hats off to the owner for the expertly inside vodka. We had a shot (or two..) of the vodka on its own before hand, which was delicious and went down easy. Definitely glad we saved plenty for the cocktails though! In combination with the ginger beer and fresh limes, this was a great twist on a classic drink. They were very easy to sip on throughout the evening. I also want to add that the kit gave us about ~10-12 drinks worth of supplies. Well worth the price from a $ per drink standpoint too! Very happy to see this place showing off its strengths during this unpredictable time. Will be back for their kits next weekend too!

Yelp
I'm basing this review solely on my Saturday late afternoon stop in for a bite. So take it for that. The place was empty, as it was only about 4:40 pm. We had come to try a quick Russian meal, but found out that those food items had switched to their sister establishment on Cherokee, Propaganda. Decided to stay and eat anyway. Bartender was super friendly and laid back. Brought us our drinks, and when I asked for a pizza suggestion (the only food item besides appetizers), he asked me if I'd had jack fruit and suggested a Jacked up Hawaiian. Went with that for me, BBQ chicken for the wife, and herbivore for the daughter. All came out after not too long a wait. Very attractive pizzas, but what about the taste. Well I was completely unprepared for how good they were. Turns out the crust is a Vitale's Bakery thin crust, and was just right for the pizzas. Toppings were all very flavorful and highly savory. Pleasantly surprised. The bartender checked on us a few times (we had sat at a table), and kept drinks filled. Best of all was it was happy hour half price for the pizzas. As for a bar night, I don't know. But if you want a quick stop in for very tasty pizza, here you go.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
As soon as I walked in, I felt welcome and very comfortable there. It has a very unique vibe to it. Almost like a modern day Speakeasy with a Russian flavor added. With a Yelp check-in, I was able to get $1.00 off your first drink. I got $1.00 off all my drinks, plus some cash back bonus. I started our with the Tasmanian IPA, but then switched to 4 Hands Divided Sky which was very good. I wanted to try their authentic Russian cuisine and had the 2 Blanchikis (mushroom/kraut and Pork). Great presentation with the nice golden crust accented with queso fresco. They were offering dance lessons while I was there. I like the style of church pews for benches to sit on at the tables. The crowd is vibrant and friendly. TV's at the bar if you just want to watch a game.

Yelp
Not my shot glass of vodka and I love vodka. How this place was selected as one of the best 100 restaurants in STL is beyond me. The only thing that saved it from getting a two star rating and being placed on my Terrible Two's list was the $1 off my cocktail for checking in on Yelp and the fact that the Pork Pelmeni which Ian Froeb recommended was actually good. What I did not like was the odor that hit me in the face as I entered. It was not a just freshly cleaned smell, it was an unpleasant scent. I just ignored it and took a seat at the bar. Which was a big mistake. I think I would have been better off at a table. Not only did I have to brush away fruit flies, but the bartender was busy servicing the tables more then she was the bar. At first I thought it was strange that she kept rushing me and pushing me to order everything at once. She also seemed put out when I asked questions about the items on the menu. Then I realized, she was hustling and working the bar and both sides of the restaurant as a server. Here's the run down on my order: New Old Fashioned - I've had better, but can I really complain about a $5 cocktail. Brussels Sprouts Salad - The bacon was rubbery and the burnt honey vinaigrette was bitter Pelmini - Good pork flavored Russian style dumpling. Saved them from only getting 2 Stars The fruit flies were a big distraction, having to wave them away constantly. The bartender even waved them away from my area. I gave up on eating my salad when I saw two resting in my salad bowl. I also felt sorry for the bartender/server. They were way to busy, to so understaffed. If she wasn't so rushed to do everything, I'm sure she'd been more attentive. When: August 9, 2016 Why: Lunch - STL 100

Yelp
We came to handlebar for geeks who drink trivia in a Thursday night. I got two cocktails, both of which were very tasty but a little weak. The bartender was very nice and topped off my drink with the extra he made. $2 tallboys can't be beat. I tried my friend's beet fries and they were to die for. Fried veggies is a vegetarian's dream and handlebar has them in excess. I can't wait to come back and try the fried mushrooms and pickles and maybe even give the vegan or gluten free pizza a go!
google avatar

Yelp
The Handle Bar is literally an art museum/bar/restaurant/pool hall/haberdashery of cool! Ever sat in a pew? Like patio seating? Are you a dance maniac? How about ahhhhmazingly delicious food, crazy cool bartenders & servers? Play pool? Ride bicycles? Enjoy good music? How about vibrant art? If you answered "Yessss" to any of these questions, I highly suggest you run over to the Handlebar. Located in The Grove neighborhood and within walking distance to so much awesomeness it'll make your head spin. However, Handlebar will leave you dizzy enough. Oh, before I forget to actually review my experience let me say the Roasted Brussels topped with goat cheese were very good, a little salty so if your sensitive to sodium dully note. The Russian Salmon flatbread was award-winning tasty too. I'll be back to handle this bar ASAP! ~Christy
google avatar

Lenn M.

Yelp
My daughter's purse was stolen at this bar. Found out from police that this is not uncommon at the Handlebar. They need better security. Not recommended for safety reasons.
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
I just didn't get it. We came here as part of a little bar hop on Saturday night, and it was easily the worst spot in terms of almost everything. It started with having to pay a cover ... really? All of the bars before HandleBar didn't charge one, and this one was the least worthy of a cover. Nonetheless, we gave it a shot. We shouldn't have and should've known from the couple of songs we heard as we entered that it wouldn't be good. I'm not sure who was DJing, but he was trying way too hard. Songs I knew were practically unrecognizable, and I've never heard so many songs that, while decent songs, were not dance songs that he was trying to make dance songs. It just didn't work, and the dead periods of people not dancing should have been a signal, but he remained in his own world. I have fun even when dancing to songs I don't particularly know or know at all; here, because of the poor mixing and DJing, I was bored. That's a problem. Maybe this was just that night, but I likely won't be back to find out.

Yelp
Wow - color me surprised. This place is fantastic! I visited on a weekday with my mom for lunch, and I have to admit, I wasn't too excited when she said she wanted to go there for lunch. I believe my exact line was "that's fine, but I don't really feel like bar food." Well now I feel like an idiot because as I was walking through the door, I saw this written on the wall: amazing vegetarian Russian menu. Say WHAT? Vegetarians, run to this place. Hell, even meat eaters should run here too. Sure it just feels like a standard bar inside (although the huge mural on the wall is pretty cool,) but you're going to fall in love with the menu. I had no idea what to choose, so I ended up going with the Red Goat sandwich which comes loaded with roasted beets, avocado, goat cheese, arugula and dill sauce. It was absolutely heavenly, and basically combines all of my favorite things into one sandwich. That being said, my mom's lunch won. She ordered off the Russian side of the menu and went with the Veggie Pelmeni, which is house made Russian style dumplings with vegetarian fillings, served in vegetable stock and topped with seasonal greens. I swear there was some yummy dill in there too. We were so surprised! Next time I'm just going to order them both and call it a day. Because there WILL be a next time. I cannot wait to go back to HandleBar to explore the rest of their menu. I feel so ignorant for not knowing how cool this place truly is. If I can walk out of a lunch totally satisfied without feeling like I ate too much, that's a winner. Get to this place as soon as you can, and order a few things so you get to experience how great the cooking really is.

Yelp
UPATED REVIEW I went back after the manager was so kind to send a gift card after our not so good experience. It was a Monday night but still had a good sized crowd We ordered a breakfast pizza with vegan cheese and i have to say it was unique but no bueno for me . It was loaded with meat but when i think about an egg on a breakfast pizza i think over easy baked right in not a hard fried egg crumbled on top . And the vegan cheese is a cashew cheese so it's crumbly and just off. I ate one slice and left it . I won't try that one again . My friend had the pizza rolls and they are like an egg roll she thought they were delicious We had the best hot spiked apple cider ever and would come back just for that In short go for the drinks and atmosphere but don't go hungry .

Yelp
ive been a patron of handlebar for many years but recent events have forced me to boycott the place. the bouncer at 2am on march 31 took my 23 year old friend's id, claimed it was a fake, refused to give it back, and was incredible rude--literally taunting us to call the cops. we had to get the manager and it took like 15 minutes to finally get his id back. previously, i'd gone with another friend who had an official id from mississippi official state app and not only did he refuse to even look at it (same bouncer btw), after we offered him $20 he threatened to "give that $20 to a crackhead to beat her up". THREATENING VIOLENCE???? that is immensely fucked up. we come to handlebar for a safe place to be queer and this bouncer has made handlebar an immensely unsafe space for us and we will never be back. i hate to post this about small queer businesses but this is unacceptable. do better for your community!

Yelp
This was my first time going recently! Really fun place with a great atmosphere, dope music, and kind people can't wait to go back

Yelp
Pretty sweet bar and great for happy hour. I came here for a meeting with a group and we enjoyed the experience. First, the bartenders are phenomenal. I had no clue what I wanted and they made me a drink based on what I was feeling. My drink came out perfectly and it was what I didn't even know I wanted. The food is also great. My favorite is the pizza, and I could easily polish off one of them by myself. The happy hour here is great and they have a great patio! Definitely recommend.

Ajla I.

Yelp
Came tonight to enjoy our friend's birthday and had a decent time + service was great until all of the bartenders started screaming "get the f*** out" around 2:15. We were planning on leaving anyway since the bar closes at 2:30 but this behavior from the bartenders was absolutely ridiculous and should not be tolerated whatsoever.
google avatar

Laura G.

Yelp
Handlebar has once again knocked it out of the park. Having the spaces out tables on the patio gave a nice feeling of being out but with proper space to feel safe. They had fire spinning shows about once an hour as well as a live DJ. Most importantly though, the food. Their collaboration with Red Knot STL is absolutely amazing! The cocktails had a nice variety and complimented the food very nicely. Red Knot's menu was small but delicious. I had the limited time pork steak with sweet potato puree and succotash and it was to die for! The desserts were also very well done which I was not expecting at all and the appetizer of gazpacho was very light and tasty. Will be going back for sure.
google avatar

Tina S.

Yelp
This was my first time at Handle Bar. The decor is unique. According to the sign all day is happy hour at Handle Bar. This is a female owned business, I try to support them as often as I can. The drinks were wet and the pizza was delicious. I ordered the Greek which did not disappoint. It's more of a flat bread with tons of toppings served on a beautiful wooden plank. We sat outside on the back patio which was a little warm. They could use some fans out there. Going back again next week. The service could have been better.
google avatar

Yelp
Oh Handle... **Insert nostalgic memories from my mid-twenties** This bike-themed bar is a really fun STL spot, especially if you have friends in town who want to paint the town. Every day of the week, they have awesome happy hour specials on all different kinds of drinks! Sunday Funday is a favorite of mine: $5 for a beer and a shot! There are many great reasons to come to HandleBar all year 'round. Spring, summer and fall are amazing on their really hip patio. Top Coat Sign Company, a local Saint Louis sign painting company, has adorned the entire inside of their patio fence with amazing murals of art and signage. On colder fall and winter nights, the patio can still be enjoyed because of their huge fire pit. On the winter Wednesdays they host an event called BikeBlitz, where people race stationary bikes and get free PBRs if they win. Thursday nights are always trivia, I have never been on a winning trivia team, but here's to hoping! Twice a month they have a dance party called London Calling. The music is lit and the photo booths are always out of this world cool. Did I mention that they have an automatic bike pump if you're running low on air? For FREE! Bike on over to HandleBar for your next pool game or patio hang and check in on Yelp because they offer $1 off your first beer!
google avatar

Evan M.

Yelp
HandleBar STL is amazing. A really great spot for going out with friends, drinking, dancing, the bartenders are AWESOME and I love that they don't have only female/model bartenders as others do. Very forward thinking, progressive, non-intimidating bar to have a good time at with friends. Lots of seating and also lots of space for dancing. Pool table has a big stain. Lots of outside space for talking because it is quieter.
google avatar

Kristy S.

Yelp
Fun place to grab drinks with friends and admire the atmosphere! Went here to grab a few drinks with friends and the bartenders were very nice! The food (we ordered pizza) was great too. Overall, if you're in the area, take a minute to stop by because all the art and decorations are worth a look but it's a relaxing place. They also have trivia which is always a fun time!
google avatar

Mandi L.

Yelp
Excellent happy hour. Half off pizza and dollar off beers and cocktails from 4-8. Service was very good and so friendly. 90% of food is made in.horse, rest is locally sourced. And you can tell. Me and my friend sat at the bar for 3 hours. Music was great too. I will be returning!

Jessica J.

Yelp
Went for karaoke and requested a song, waited for an hour only to be told we had to buy something in order to sing. Maybe advertise that before you have someone sit there for a whole hour. Never had this problem with karaoke before until tonight.

MaiLa D.

Yelp
Such great vibes here. Expansive drink options - cans and drafts - and the pizzas are fab - generously sized and affordable. Service staff are friendly and chill. You just couldn't feel out of place here if you tried - super welcoming to weirdos of all stripes!

Diane S.

Yelp
I will not return here. Proof of vaccination required but yet have no masks on. Go down the road and no requirement needed. Go down further and have to have mask on when you go to counter for service. Would rather wear a mask than reveal my private health history!

Yelp
I gathered a fun group of about 10 people for a night of pierogi-eatin' at Handle Bar, and we all rather liked the place. I had never been there before and didn't know much about it, but I'm glad I went! Before this meal, I knew the following: * The Handle Bar was a bike-lover thing. * It was a bar. I had seen a tweet about Handle Bar redoing its menu to include more Russian-inspired items, including pierogi. PIEROGI? SIGN ME THE FREAK UP! Lord knows I've been lamenting St. Louis' lack of pierogi for more than a decade, so I was super-stoked to gather up my pierogi-loving friends and try these suckers out as soon as the new menu was available. After making sure from friends that the Handle Bar was 100% smoke free (YAY!), I made it a thing and sent out Facebook invites. The bar was full of wood (that's what she said) and had a strange two-room feel, with that big divider wall between two sections. A few friends were already at the bar when I arrived, so we moved over to the only long table so that more of us could chat and look at each other (we were very pretty). Note to groups: this table isn't that long. We squeezed 10 around it, but we had a difficult time. Tatiana was a fabulous waitress and bartender (and perhaps an owner and chef? I'm unsure, but I think she's at least one of these). She answered questions about beers and food all night long and didn't rush us at all. I ordered the pierogi. These were different from the ones I was used to in Pittsburgh. Whereas Pittsburgh pierogi are doughy and boiled/steamed, Handle Bar's were kind of fried and crispy. We ordered potato/cabbage and potato/cheese pierogi. Two pierogi on a plate per order. They were very good and I'd totally eat them again, though I was still left craving the pierogi I was used to. I also ordered veggie blinchiki, a pancake-type thing. I don't remember much about them, though. It was almost a month ago, for crying out loud! Nosing around, I noticed that the Handle Bar had a great stock of board games. I'd love to get a group together to play, though I do wonder where we'd all fit. Maybe it would have to be a four-person night so we could just sit at a booth? I need to return and try a few more menu items and really take stock of the place. I like it so far, though!

Yelp
HandleBar knows how to throw a party. I am not a huge fan of crowded places and might be the last guy to run to the pubs for a special occasion. However, when HandleBar is having a special event, which seems like every other day, I want to be there! It's actually where I spent New Year's Eve. I even watched a few World Series games there! The key to this establisment is owner Tatyana Telnikova. My wife and I met her the first time we entered HB, MY SUGGESTION THIS TIME, and we were in love with her in a matter of moments. Little did we know then that she and her wonderful place would become a big part of our spare time. Tatyana is always thinking up new ways to entertain her patrons and gets involved with happenings in the Grove and really all around the city of St. Louis. And her patrons respond. There's always something cool going on around the bar. Recently, they started Sell Your Sh*t Sundays where local artists and retailers hock their creative clothes, jewelry, or art. This venue is enormous: a lounge area, a "stage" side where djs and musician perform, and a nice patio with murals covering the wooden fence surrounding the back. They used to have an open mic night, which I thought was pretty great! And the beer. Again, HB tries to incorporate all elements of the city. Local breweries are highlighted with great pride here. At one point, they gave Four Hands a monopoly on the taps, in honor of 4H's anniversary. As for Schlafly, pick your color from the rainbow. They probably have it. How can I forget the food? I really like the pizza, but recently I tried some of their Russian items. Very unique, very cool. Tatyana kept talking about her Russian menu, and I was skeptical at best. Everything I have tried is wonderful. I could go on forever. Go to HandleBar. Meet Tatyana. It will be worth your while! Suggestions: Swine & Dine Pizza, Meaty or Veggie Blinchiki, Any Pierogi

Yelp
Yet another crazy bar on the Groove. But, this is a decent spot. Pros: + Bicycle great for photos upfront + Always can get a rousing game of pool going + Great events - fun to watch Cards play here + Lot of local STL Beer Cons: - Cover on weekends that sometimes seems a bit too much for what you're getting - difficult to find parking Definitely need to be back to try out the food though.

Yelp
I have visited the HandleBar at least twice and each time has been for a birthday party. Both times the service has been decent and the drinks have been great. I like how they have craft beers on tap and I like how the bartenders (even though they are slammed with business) provide me with information about the beers so I know what the expect. The atmosphere is pretty cool if you are into bikes. Some really cool architecture and decorations throughout the entire place, including the patio. I definitely know I am old though because one the DJ starts playing I am usually ready to go! The music is loud and I don't fell like dancing when I am drinking my craft beer (I don't want to spill it)! Overall, I do enjoy the HandleBar, but I don't know if this would be a top pick for a location I would choose on my own.

Yelp
Only went for a bit, but a fun and interesting bar! Love the ambiance! Very edgy and interesting. Church benches, bicycles, and a sweet patio to get some fresh air and escape the AC. The bartender that served me and my friends was super nice! He Had great recommendations too! I heard they usually have specials and when i went they had a $5 moscow mule special. I signed up right away! Cannot say for when it is full, but to start off the night, get a few drinks and get on your way? Its a good spot.
