Tucked away on a back street amongst vendors selling hardware and scuba gear, Tarihi Karaköy Balikcisi may very well be the best fish restaurant in town. Go at lunch when (and only when) Maharrem Usta is working the charcoal and get the grilled sole.

Visited January 2016 - This working class fish lokanta sits quietly in Karaköy with a discreet plaque and old-world charm. Inside, the welcome is warm and the menu handwritten, showcasing the day’s freshest catch. We began with balık çorbası – fish soup, simple and savoury with a natural sweetness, lifted by lemon and served with crusty bread still warm from the oven. Then came kağıtta levrek (sea bass en papillote), orfoz şiş (grouper skewers), çoban salatası, and minekop şiş (shi drum skewers). Each dish was perfectly judged by the usta grill master, buttery fresh, sweetly succulent, and singing of the sea.

This place was incredible!! The guys who owned the place were soooo sweet. They made us feel sooo welcomed. They made grilled fish taste sooooo delicious. My partner calls him the master of grilled fish. I highly recommend coming here!

Place is miserable but the fish is fresh and tasty. If you don't pay attention around, you can enjoy the food. Service is ok but even though that it was empty, they were rushing the food without any reason. Not pricy. Fresh and clean.

Not really! Overpriced! I came here after reading some feedback, but I found that I was better if I didn't. The problem was the price. I don't know if this was because of being a tourist, but there is no menu and you just decide what you want at the fish counter. I know the price is constantly changing, but a table with the price would be better. Even the price for 2 glasses of wine...100 lira. So why 3 stars? The food was good and the waiter tried to make us as comfortable as he can.

Best fish dishes ever ... so even if u don’t know what to order .. definitely get the fish soup , grilled fish of the day and some bread will be served and you will not be disappointed... delicious and so fresh . Love it !!

There is no better view of Galata and istanbul than this restaurant. Atop a historic building, the service is classy and food is simple, classic and perfectly executed. Fish is grilled on charcoal grill. Lakerda is house made and amazing

The view is fantastic! We can see the beautiful Galata Bridge, the sea and the scenery across the river. The seafood is awesome! Three of us spoke highly of it. The chocolate souffle is very great too.

Fantastic. Make this a destination for a nice dinner with a fantastic view and a great menu. Has the nice feel of discovering a hidden gem as you walk to the end of a little dead end and take a lift up to the 5th floor. Highly recommend, had very nice attentive service, recommend the fish cooked in paper and fish soup.
