On the Grid : Papa's Cache Sabroso

"Do you love garlic? Of course you love garlic. Papa's will deliver it in spades on Chicago's finest contribution to Latino cuisine: the jibarito. Imagine sandwich bread but instead of bread it is greasy fried plantain, smothered in mayonnaise and jammed with garlicky meat! Mouth pow! Also, perfect rotisserie chicken. Luis Guzmán ate here and his picture's on the wall and that's all you need to know." - Firebelly Design

The Best Restaurants In Humboldt Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"If you haven’t had a jibarito before, this is the place to start. Papa’s jibaritos are garlicky and delicious, served with a side of Spanish rice you can use as a base for when the contents of your sandwich inevitably fall onto your plate. The dining room is small, but there’s a covered patio out front where you and a friend can split a BYOB six-pack." - josh barnett, john ringor

Been coming here for a longtime but finally was able to bring my wife to try it out! Love this place the jibaritos are always great the rotisserie chicken is also so good. Definitely this place will continue to be a favorite of mine.

Google
I came here ready for some solid Puerto Rican food, but left wondering if I’d accidentally paid for a museum exhibit. The $16 jibarito had one piece of steak — not a steak sandwich, more like a steak sighting. Blink and you’ll miss it. Since the place is “known for its chicken,” I tried that too. Honestly? Just plain chicken. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing that made me understand the hype either. The arroz con gandules? A little undercooked, dry, and about as exciting as unbuttered toast. The saving grace? The beans — those were amazing, rich, flavorful, the kind of beans that make you rethink your life. And the tostones? Crispy perfection. If I ever come back (which, let’s be real, I probably won’t), it’ll be for beans and tostones only. Everything else can stay on display in the “meh” section.

Google
This place is a fantastic find, and I was blown away by their Jibarito. Having tried one in Puerto Rico, I can say this version is on the exact same level of deliciousness. While the flavor profile is its own, it's incredibly tasty and truly does justice to the classic sandwich. The restaurant itself is a decently sized, straightforward spot that's clearly very popular. It was bustling with orders, and while that meant service was a bit delayed, the staff was working incredibly hard. They were so patient, taking the time to answer all our questions about the menu despite how busy they were. Be sure to ask about their daily specials, as they have great deals on certain days. I'll definitely be back for that Jibarito!

Zabdiel E.

Google
The best Jibaritos in the USA. I always get the steak jibarito, arroz con gandulez, parcha (passion fruit) to drink, and sweet plantains! I come here once a week.

Michael D.

Google
A gem of a hole in the wall if there ever was one. The inside is pleasantly warm and thick with the scent of rotisserie chicken. Staff are very friendly and service is fast. Food was amazing and well above board for the price. Especially the jibaritos and the chicken. Definitely will be returning in the future.

Google
This was our first time coming. We usually go to Cafe Central a mile east but they were closed. We saw this place had great reviews and decided to come try it and it did not disappoint. We will make this our puerto than stop from now on. Our vegetarian jibarritos were so filling We only ate half of it and took the other half to go. I already can't not wait to come back.

William M.

Google
I went here with a group of friends. We were sat immediately. Read through the menu, ordered, and received our food all in under 15 minutes. The steak jibarito was quite tasty. Get it with salsa (very spicy in a good way) and garlic oil that really tie the whole dish together! The vibe was really chill, a mix of Chicago sports clubs and Puerto rican flare. Our server was kind and took great care of us. I'll be back for sure!

Sanqwana G.

Google
The food was so freaking delicious here. I went three days in a row with different people of course lol But I was completely blown away by the service everyone is so friendly. It makes you feel right at home. Everything was so good ...that chicken is awesome, packed full of flavor, my favorite is the steak, I had it three ways and it was delicious every time. The chicken salad was fantastic. You must try this place, anything you order you can't go wrong, you won't be disappointed.

Felicia E.

Yelp
I have No issues with the food. I have a problem with the servic. I put in the note area box I needed napkins, forks, spoons, plates. I spent $95 worth of food and didn't get that at all after asking. i also did not get my garlic sauce for my Jibrito sandwich. what's the sandwich without that sauce. Very disappointed. I had people from out of town trying this food.

Yelp
If I could rate Papa's Cache Sabroso a 6 I would. Everything from the food to the service was great. Got here right at open. My friend and I were well attended and given space as we were catching up. More customers came in after an hour or two and by the time we left the restaurant was packed. Very cozy, nice local Puerto Rican restaurant. Have been craving to come back after since I left.

Yelp
Vsited Papa Cache Sabroso hoping for a memorable meal, and while the experience was perfectly adequate, it didn't quite reach the level of "must-try." The menu offers a nice selection of classic Latin dishes. We got that the Papa's Medio Pollo Chon to share for a family of 3. The Medio Pollo Chon is the signature half-rotisserie chicken at Papa Cache Sabroso, and while it's certainly edible, I found it to be just okay. My husband compared it to a Costco rotisserie chicken. Don't expect a gourmet experience, but you'll get a decent plate of food for a fair price. It's an okay 3-star experience--nothing to complain about, but nothing I'll be rushing back for next week, either.

Yelp
I placed an order three Steak Jibaritos online. The pickup process was pretty easy, just had to wait in line while other people ordered their food in front of me. The Jibaritos themselves were good. A little overpriced but still a decent menu. My only issue with them was the lack of garlic on top. I ordered two out of three with arroz con gandules for $2.50 more. The rice was pretty good definitely not the best I've had. Not exactly sure if I'd return anytime soon. $16.50 for Jibarito with rice is a tad bit much. I got my usually spot that tastes a lot better for a lot cheaper as well. Won't rule this place out, but I have my spot already.
google avatar

Joanna M.

Yelp
There is metered street parking in front of the restaurant. You walk up to a large outside patio and there is a smaller inside eating area. It is a little dark on the interior but the warmth from the service, the amazing food and cheer of other patrons makes up for it. The owner was lovely and the service was excellent. I enjoyed every bit. The portion size is large so you definitely won't leave hungry. I got the rotisserie chicken with white rice and beans and yuca. The garlic sauces was yummy and the spicy sauce had just enough kick. I was just sad I couldn't finish all my food. Definitely worth dropping in and checking out.
google avatar

T N.

Yelp
Friendly service and good looking good. The garlic sauce was definitely the highlight

Yelp
Great food, great service, and it's BYOB! Their rice and beans are amazing! The place is small so don't be surprised to wait for a table but well worth it. They also have a patio that has heaters for some extra space. They have a small menu but everything we had was a hit. The chicken is juicy and well flavored. The tostones with the garlic sauce I could eat everyday. Their homemade hot sauce has amazing flavor and is definitely hot but not crazy hot. Can't wait to come back and try something new.
google avatar

Deamontria R.

Yelp
We did a catering order from Papa Cache for lunch and we all loved it. The chicken was so flavorful and the rice was bomb! Everything came so fresh. Would definitely go back and try at the restaurant. From what we tried, we would highly recommend!
google avatar

Sho R.

Yelp
I picked up dinner after 8 pm on a Monday evening. i wanted to try Chicago special Jibarito, and this was the only place I could find open after 8. I went with a steak jibarito. It was excellent. Fried plantains on the side was good as well.
google avatar

Martin T.

Yelp
I LOVE Jibarito's! This was my first one and immediately I fell in love with them! If you're visiting, I'd recommend trying these! I preferred the chicken Jibarito. The restaurant is small and is more of a spot for a quick bite. Service was great and fast.
google avatar

Yelp
In the world of Puerto Rican cuisine Papa stands up to the best. I stopped in the old neighborhood for a quick bite and was drawn in to Papa's. It's not hard to do. Been here many times because it's tried and true. He's been around on Division street about 25 years and is usually around in the restaurant to meet and greet. The service is excellent with Johnny knowing the menu the neighborhood regulars and knows how to treat newcomers and walk them through the menu. I usually go family style with a friend for a whole chicken, arroz y gandules, and Yuca En Escabeche , yucca with onions, simple but insanely delicious. Now their chicken is off the hook. No one had chicken like this. Lightly spiced broasted to perfection. There's plenty of other menu options to choose from. Their Lechon Asado on Saturdays only is some of the best around. There's also plenty of outside seating so try Papa's out to get a true taste for Humboldt Park.
google avatar

Jorge A.

Yelp
Casual Puertorican cuisine in a neighborhood vibe. Thier specialty is the rotisserie chicken for its Great flavor and spice. If you happen to be in Humboldt park you must stop by. Try thier hibaritos, the rotisserie chicken is a must.
google avatar

Nolan F.

Yelp
We ordered: Jibarto con Arroz - steak between fried garlicky plantains Papa's Pollo Food was all delicious. Both the rotisserie chicken and steak was well seasoned and tender. Jibarto sandwich was a great combo of fresh and savory flavors and textures. Rice texture and flavor is a tasty side. Employee was very enthusiastic and nice. Good service. I like the family vibe including the people photos on the tables. I'm going to recommend this to my Puerto Rican friends.
google avatar

Yelp
Haven't seen the owners in a bit. Life changes fast. However I do order to go . Decided and with whole family at the festival. Music was on point! Food absolutely amazing. Service, as if I still go weekly, so humbling. Just perfect. Memories still shine! Love your family! Love baseball.. Stay humble. Heartfelt.. Nunez-Roman Family.

Reagan C.

Yelp
Fantastic! The owner was so nice. The food was AMAZING. I had a jibarito. I have to return again when I'm in the area.

Ivan L.

Yelp
Went there for lunch with my wife waited forty five minutes to get our food. The waitress said it was shift change. When I finally got my food I opened the steak jibaro sandwich there was one small piece of dry meat and the tostones were greasy and crumbly an indication of it being prefried then the rice was hard and tasted old when I told the waitress she got angry and said it wasn't yesterdays rice. I would not eat there again and advise anyone else to save your time and money and eat elsewhere. 100% disappointed.

Yelp
Overall Thoughts: Delicious, garlicky jibaritos; exceptional service and inviting staff (Papa himself gave us a warm welcome too)! Indoor seating is limited, but they have a toasty, heated outdoor space for cold winter days. Prices are reasonable too. Food I tried: - Ribeye Steak Jibarito: The steak was super juicy and flavorful, and the plantain was quite densely flattened. Adding their garlic sauce on top added a nice kick. The arroz con gandules on the side was also extremely good-- a little crispy, very flavorful and aromatic. - Shredded Chicken Jibarito: The shredded chicken was also tender and juicy with great flavor, but I think the flavor of the steak was more robust, which I preferred. -- Price (relative to peers): 4.4/5 Food: 4.7/5 Ambience: 4.8/5 Service: 5/5 Overall Value: 4.7/5

Yelp
The food is very good, I always get their sandwiches. Service is adequate. Ambiance is a typical local restaurant.

Yelp
Today the wifey & I treated my nephew & his wife to Papa's Cache!! When I tell you this is the best rotisserie chicken in the city, you better listen!! I had the 1/2 chicken w/ arroz con gandules. Some yuca (i have to have it) and some tostones. The yuca was 8/10 The tostones was pretty good 6.8/10 The star was that rotisserie bird! So flavorful, juicy & tender. You can taste the garlic in that bird and it pairs well with the rice. Great meal and the service was EXCELLENT!! Definitely a must try! Visit Humboldt Park and go have some of the best rotisserie chicken you'll ever have. Or check out one of their other dishes. Solid 8.8/10
google avatar

Yelp
I have been coming here for years since friends introduced me to this place back in our college years. It's a no frills spot with DELICIOUS Puerto Rican food. The steak Jibarito is a must have. If I even set foot into Chicago I bee line to Humboldt park to eat here. The tender steak topped with crisp veggies, sautéed onions, garlic sauce and crispy plantain...mmm. Thinking about it literally makes my mouth water. I can't wait until the next time I'm visiting Chicago so I can eat this sandwich again!

Destiney G.

Yelp
I'm gunna give them one star for when they're busy they have no seating system . A woman was waiting in-front of me for 30 minutes and a group of women with there kids about 7 of them just walked in front of us and sat themselves . While we had been patiently waiting . I think it's rude and disrespectful that the waiters watched us stand there and wait , while telling us it was going to a bit to be seated then just let the group sit themselves . Do better and have a system for when you're busy .

Yelp
While vacationing in Chicago, I was told by my local friend that there's a "restaurant that I have to try"! We go the first day: They're closed. But we weren't discouraged: We went back two days later. And though they were closing early, they allowed us to order and dine in. So happy that they did! Authentic food. Savory flavors. Friendly staff. Joyful customers. The steak sandwich was delicious and tender. The rice and beans side was plentiful. The food was so good, we took a whole chicken meal home with us...and ended up eating it all that night! The hack: Add their homemade green chili sauce to your rice for a kick of heat! (You'll thank me later!) Next time I'm in town, I'll add this to my "must visit" list.

Cynthia V.

Yelp
The chicken is out of this world!! Really good and authentic food, the best in Humboldt park!
google avatar

Yelp
The best Puerto Rican food..so far Checked in on a few occasions and their chicken is nice and tender. Staff are friendly and the service is top line!

Yelp
They don't make PASTELS! YOUR PUERTO RICANS But, you have tacos. So sad I don't eat there no more

Delia V.

Yelp
This was my first time going to this restaurant on May 27th me & my daughters were on a lunch date & I must say the food was very good & tasty & prices were very reasonable only thing was that is was a lil small & they didn't serve to many side. But great customer service & great food. I will be returning soon.

Angela K.

Yelp
The very nice owner with the hat will make your day if you ever get the lovely chance of coming here. The food was amazing. I would definitely recommend coming here. Great service. Fast. And open when I wanted something to eat. Currently 3:18 pm.
google avatar

Yelp
If you come to chicago, one of the things it's known for is jibaritos. I've never had one so of course I had to try it. I got the steak jibarito and it did not disappoint. My husband got the chicken and I liked the steak better. It definitely had so much flavor and it was a pretty. It portion. I ordered this for delivery since it was far from me and it still came warm!
google avatar

Samantha P.

Yelp
10/10. How could you not love Papa Caches! One of my favorite Jibaritos in town and the rice and beans is fire. On summer nights, occasionally you'll catch live music and the owner is very friendly.
google avatar

Tania A.

Yelp
Best chicken, Jibarito! Must try this place! Chicago staple with over 20 years of service.
google avatar

Brent C.

Yelp
BEWARE! When I followed the link to their website from Yelp, and then clicked to view their "Restaurant Menu, " my computer locked up and a screen appeared supposedly from Microsoft while a recording started stating that my computer had been compromised! It also stated not to turn off my computer. Well, I immediately turned off my computer and now it seems to work normally. If I do end up having issues because of their website, I'm sure that I can hold them legally liable, whether or not they intentionally did this or if someone hacked their site.
google avatar

Jimmy G.

Yelp
Food is Amazing!! I am from Texas and live in Texas.....but when I am hanging out in Chicago..I make sure to stop by, and get my fix, at this fine restaurant. The Staff is super Friendly and the owner Victor "Pappa" treats you like Family...I definitely recommend this restaurant any day of the week...
google avatar

Charles B.

Yelp
This place has the tastiest jibaritos around and that's saying a lot for the Humbolt Park area. There's a lot of competition. They have a great patio during the summer. Don't expect your dining experience to be quick though. Papa Cache takes their time and they even have a sign inside that says that.
google avatar

Rich G.

Yelp
Their chicken is outstanding - very juicy, one of my favorite places for Jibarito's too. The wait staff is very friendly. I wish the place was a bit brighter but it's definitely a place I will go back to in the future.

Rosie A.

Yelp
You wouldn't think of Tacos when going to a PR restaurant. But let me tell you, this tacos were AMAZING! The owner had ran out of tortillas and he sent someone to the store to buy them. It was worth the wait and I thank them for going above and beyond. The tacos were steak and Chicken but they were not like the regular Mexican tacos, this tacos were Better!
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
Mm mm mm This is everything you want out of a hole in the wall experience. The ladies taking my order were great, and the food was amazing. I ordered a jibarito with steak. To die for. It is just walking distance to many other great restaurants, but this will be better (:

Jeniffer M.

Yelp
One of my fav PR spots in Chicago. It is BYOB so that's freaking awesome. Can be a long wait time but good food takes time. The 2nd shift manager was a total vibe. It was me and 2 friends and we had a little wait, he made the time go by quick. Sweet and funny, would def be back on service alone. They only have pernil on Saturday, it's the special. It was Bomb. It had crispy pieces like I like, no complaints. Yucca was delicious and garlicky. Arroz con gandules had flavor and the pernil was seasoned so well. Also had a mini jibaroto slider. BOMB. Def a spot I'll be returning to in Chicago.
google avatar

Marcela S.

Yelp
Sinceramente la MEJOR COMIDA Puerto Riqueña en la ciudad ! I highly recommend their Jibaritos Arroz con gandules it's absolutely delicious. I just left and planning my next trip back . The food is fresh to order , authentic and packed with flavor - amazing !!
google avatar

Glaucia M.

Yelp
Great food, super friendly reception from Ivan what gave us the true Puerto Rican ambiance.
google avatar

Mikaela H.

Yelp
anything less than five stars is wrong. the atmosphere. the food. the service. 10/10. was there for lunch & got the one chuleta frita & should've gotten two. there sign said it wasn't fast food but that food came out hot & quick.
google avatar

Dnyce E.

Yelp
The quality of "Puerto Rican Food" in Chgo has dwindled down to a tiny amount of restaurants doing it right. Papas Cache are amongst those few. The Weekend "Lechon" is fuego! Their chuletas,(porkchops) are amazing and seasoned to perfection. The half chicken is my "go to" as it is seasoned with the same flavor from the lechon. The jibarito is also a hit. This is a must and the fact that it is BYOB? I mean a total win win!
google avatar

Jess V.

Yelp
I didn't want to leave Chicago without having a jibarito and I'm so glad I came to this place to try it out! My friend and I sat in their outdoor seating, and the place wasn't too busy on an early Monday night. After our orders were taken by the really kind lady working there, we were given a complimentary white bread basket with butter. I thought this was a nice little treat before our main meal! It didn't take too long for the jibaritos to come out, and just looking at them,,, they looked so delicious & appetizing!!! First off, I thought that the plantains were fried perfectly! They were not hard or greasy, and had a great chew to them. Each bite was so flavorful and the savory, soft steak, crunchy veggies, & rice went together so well. And adding the garlic sauce (I am a garlic lover!!!) was the cherry on top. The portion was generous and it left my friend and I full for a while! When I went inside the restaurant to use the restroom, I saw the rotisserie chicken and it looked so good!!! I wish I could have tried it so if you come here with a friend or group, maybe share the jibarito and a 1/2 chicken. I also thought the location was nice; a lot of murals nearby and you can walk over to the Wicker Park area. Overall, this was one of the best meals that I had during my trip and I definitely recommend coming here to try the famous jibarito! :)
