An Ethiopian upstart drawing raves from The Washington Post and local press for bold awaze tibs, veggie spreads, and welcoming coffee ceremonies. A lively West End address worth the detour.

The staff were lovely and the food was DELICIOUS. It was our first time trying Ethiopian food and now we’re hooked! The waitress made us a lovely ginger tea while we waited for our food to go. I will definitely be coming again!

Took my wife here for her first Ethiopian food experience. The coffee was excellent and the food so tasty. We love how they show the beans and roasting. We ordered both the veggie and meat combo. A great way to sample a variety for first timers. Definitely will be returning here for more.

If you have not ever tried Ethiopian food, this is the place to do it. The food is incredibly delicious. Lots of vegetarian options if you are vegan. We had the veggie sambusa, ASA Tibs which is a fish dish, meat and veggie platters. The flavors of everything was wonderful. Topped everything with a glass of honey wine. I can see them in the future as a Bib Gourmand.

Feru is the absolute best. It’s my third time here and the food is just delicious. Don’t miss the coffee ceremony, it’s an experience! I love the veggie platter with chicken and beef tibs. Niberet the owner is so warm and welcoming.

Niberet, owner of the restaurant, was absolutely delightful. She is an excellent chef. Every item was delicious including Baklavas and Tiramisu. She performed a coffee ceremony which was an experience in itself.

My wife and I tried this restaurant for our first experience of Ethiopian food - and we were delighted with our choice. The owner, Nirebet was an amazing hostess and gracious in explaining the what and the how, the ingredients, the delicacies and the traditions. The service was very personalized, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was delicious! We had the vegetable Sambusa as appetizers, the Awasa Tibs for our main course, and Baklava for dessert. I topped it off with the traditional Ethiopian coffee while my wife tried the tea with ginger, cloves, cinnamon and other spices. It was all truly excellent, with the Injera and tender beef Awasa Tibs and the homemade baklava making us want more. We highly recommend this place, and will be certainly visiting again to try some of the other dishes.

We enjoyed a fantastic Ethiopian lunch at Feru Bar & Restaurant in Alexandria. The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was outstanding. We loved the warm, friendly atmosphere and cozy setting. If you haven’t visited FERU yet, you’re missing out! They’re open daily and always ready to welcome you. Coffee Ceremony is highly recommended!

I really enjoyed the music as well, it made for a fun atmosphere. This will be our go-to spot for Ethiopian food from now on!

Yelp
I realize that I'm disrupting the unanimous 5 star reviews for this restaurant, but I'm not being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian - call it 3.5/5. The good: - The veggie sampler was very flavorful with a wide variety of vegetables. There were an ample amount of herbs visible (big sprigs of rosemary). The collard greens in particular were a standout, because I usually don't like collards at Ethiopian places - They were very generous with the amount of Enjera bread provided, I didn't have to ask for more like at some other places - Service was friendly The bad: - My derek tibs were overcooked beyond belief. I know that they're supposed to be crispy, but these tibs were cooked well past well done. They were basically dark little hard rocks of beef jerky on my plate that I had to force down and drown with sauce - The cabbage was very disappointing: I'm used to eating the hell out of the alicha at Ethiopian restaurants, but I didn't even finish the underseasoned, limp cabbage here - The service was spotty at times. The waiter seemingly forgot that I had ordered a beer until near the end of the meal. And then when I was trying to flag her down to get the check, she was zoning out and staring into space This place has potential, but is not nearly a 5 Yelp star restaurant

Yelp
Really good solid Ethiopian food. The last few Ethiopian places I've had were salty and the food didn't seem fresh. Coming here, the food was fresh and cooked well. I ate a ton and had a great appetite. Def recommend it here...

Yelp
Came here with my mom and it was definitely a great choice. Our waitress was amazing-super friendly and gave us a complimentary coffee to try (which was so so good). We had the awaze tibs and the veggie combo. Everything was incredible-the seasonings were absolutely perfect and the meat was tender and flavorful. I love Ethiopian food and will definitely becoming back here when I'm in Alexandria.

Yelp
Unbelievably disgusting service. The store says they're open from 11AM on Fridays. I ordered on grubhub and the restaurant accepted the order and when I got there at noon on a Friday the door was locked and nobody was there and the sign even said they're open from 11AM on Fridays. Horrendous to be so deceitful and unreliable.

Yelp
Hidden gem just under our noses. Everything was cooked to perfection and flavorful. We had a party of 3 and ordered one meat combo ($60) and one veggie combo ($20) and there were still leftovers. We also got 2 bottles of homemade honey wine ($35 each) that was subtly sweet with a touch of effervescence. They're not on DoorDash yet but we will def be back. Their owner Nibert is so sweet and attentive. Stop by and check it out! We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious and authentic food in a cozy atmosphere with great service! Been meaning to try this place for a while as my wife has been here a couple times for business lunches and always brought home great leftovers. Finally got a chance to come and it didn't disappoint! Highly recommend!

Yelp
I had the best Boula Gonfo at this place. The owner was so nice and was amazing at explaining every dish and recommended this dish for me and it was my absolute favorite! This restaurant is a must if you are looking for authentic Ethiopian food! Must try!!!!!

Yelp
GO HERE!! The customer service was so welcoming and accommodating. The food was delicious!!! The collard greens, lentils, rice, and the chicken was the best Ethiopian I've had! And the homemade coffee was so special. WOMEN OWNED TOO. Thanks Feru!!

Yelp
The food was so good. We got the vegetarian platter, beef tibs, and fish. Great choice. It went all really well together. Beef was so tender and had a nice spicy tomato flavor to it. Very satisfying. Will definitely come back.

Yelp
The food was phenomenal ! We'll definitely be coming back. Especially recommend the veggie platter and veg sembusas. The staff is also very warm and attentive.

Yelp
Amazing Ethiopian food! We got the honey wine which was in a really cool traditional goblet. For our entrees, we got the feru tibs, which were deliciously seasoned with peppers and the veggie combo! This is a small woman owned restaurant and the chef is the owners mom! Props to the chef!

Yelp
Just moved here and I have found my go to restaurant. I've never had Ethiopian food but I chose this place because of local (convenience). I love the food, staff was nice, drinks were tasty and I did enjoy myself!!!!

Yelp
Excellent espresso and great atmosphere too. Yirgalem Is an outstanding server! She is very knowledgeable about food & drinks. Nice bar selections. With many dishes to choose from on their menu. Smooth jazz music for your listening pleasure.

Lactivitis R.

Yelp

Geira B.

Yelp
A goto place to enjoy Ethiopian cultural cousin with warm hospitality and ambience. A place I recommend to people open to new experience.

Lisa S.

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Feru, named after the lovely owner. My husband and I shared the vegetarian platter for two, which came with plenty of injera. Service from Feru herself was warm and welcoming. Ethiopian music played at a nice volume in the background. We happened upon someone's birthday, and he ended up sharing his cake, a cream-filled pastry, light and delicious. We will definitely return.

Yelp
Great, authentic food. Excellent service. Definitely a good bang for your buck. Will be a new frequent stop.

Yelp
Came here randomly on a Friday. It's really nice inside with all the fresh flowers. Our food was so delicious too! The waitress asked if we liked spicy and brought a container of jalapeños, which was nice since we could adjust spice level. We ordered the veggie combo and a fish entree and it was more than enough food for two. We liked the spices on the side that we could add as well. Would come back!

Deborah P.

Yelp
Had a wonderful lunch the other day at Feru. We came upon the restaurant by accident but what a great accident. The food was delicious, the people lovely and for me, best of all, they had teff injera readily available. This may not sound like a big deal for most people but I love Ethiopian food and unfortunately I have a medical condition that prohibits wheat products, so regular injera is a no no. If you love Ethiopian food, are gluten free and looking for a place to go in Alexandria, I heartily recommend Feru. Also looks like a fun place to spend an evening and live music may be available. ,

Yelp
The dishes were delicious ,every bite was heavenly. The best Ethiopian restaurant in DMV area.

S G.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the food. I've been to a few other places in the DMV area Feru is a "stand-out" to me. It is a bit out of the way for me but worth the drive.

Ashley R.

Yelp
Food was great, portions were generally and staff was wonderful. They have a bar which was a nice surprise. Highly recommend.

Kasha H.

Yelp
We visited Feru after reading a very positive review by Tom Sietsema of the Washington Post. We were very pleased, too. The atmosphere was surprisingly upscale for a small restaurant in a strip mall and the food was some of the best Ethiopian that we've had in the area (and we've visited most Ethiopian restaurants in Alexandria). The service was also terrific from (we believe) the owner who seemed to do it all, with ease. I highly recommend Feru. Here's a caveat, though: The website is confusing -- the menu (at least as of our visit) only listed lunch items and the only times to reserve were up to 5 pm. But the menu also applies to dinner and the hours of operation are through the evening. I called to confirm this and didn't need a reservation for a weekday at 6 pm.

Yelp
This place is a must if you enjoy Ethiopian food or it's your first time trying it. It was my first time yesterday and it was phenomenal. The service is great, our waitress helped my friend and I navigate the menu and it goes without saying that it helped us choose the best dinner meal I've had in weeks.

Madison B.

Yelp
Everything was great! The ambiance, the service, and of course the food. My visiting friend and I went here to catch up and we were so happy with the experience. My husband, who is not really into trying new foods, tried the leftovers I brought home and wants to go again for dinner tonight.

Tania M.

Yelp
Great food, great patient service and very positive vibes. My first time eating food. It was great! Generous portions, well cooked beef. Delicious!
