Fake blood-splattered bar with Gwar theme, pub fare

"A theatrical, dive-style heavy metal bar splattered with fake blood that celebrates a local shock-rock band’s roots and offers a distinctly raucous, unabashedly local nightspot." - AFAR

"A collaboration between the band GWAR and Rappahannock’s Travis Croxton, GWARbar surrounds you with band memorabilia, a metal soundtrack, and Japanese horror films on TV; it can feel surprisingly chill when not too crowded, cocktails run strong and syrupy so I’d opt for a beer or a rail drink, and there’s a late-night junk-food menu with a sizable amount of vegan options." - Missy Frederick

"GWAR Tribute Bar with Great Food A couple of blocks north of revitalizing Broad Street, GWARbar pays tribute to the renowned (and sometimes reviled) Richmond shock-rock band. Enjoy "gore-may" food and drinks—with names like the Baconecutioner and Lettuce Slay— in a fake blood–spattered setting that honors GWAR’s 30-year history and outrageous costumes, props, and stagecraft."

"I saw an intense note posted on the door at the opening warning that minors are denied entry because the pop-up includes potentially offensive material—depictions of violence and sexual innuendos—and urging anyone with strong aversions to horror themes to check with the door people before entry, while also noting that, though the work is satire, "de gustibus non est disputandum" (there’s no accounting for taste). Pulled together by Drink Company to replace its short-lived, copyright-challenged “Rick & Morty” bar, the pop-up is designed to deliver for fans of Richmond’s theatrical heavy metal band: the walls are covered with Gwar costumes and memorabilia; the drinks menu features cocktails like the $14 Undead Scumdog (sherry brandy, maraschino liquor, grapefruit, cinnamon, fig grenadine, and lime), a $13 Bonesnapper with Hendrick’s Gin and sake, and a Slaughterama-rita with tequila, watermelon, lime, and salt; and the food menu is straight out of a 7/11—Gusher fruit snacks, Twinkies, and Combos. The Gwar Pub is at 1839 7th Street NW, will run through Halloween, and its creatively ghoulish decor can be seen on Instagram." - Adele Chapin

"I noted that Gwar fans in the area won’t have to travel to Richmond’s Gwarbar for a fake blood‑spattered night out now that the D.C. pop-up will offer similar themed experiences." - Adele Chapin
