On the Grid : Nova Era Bakery

"Though there are a number of Nova Era cafes in Toronto, this is their main location and bakery; the smell of freshly baked sweets and bread tempt passersby. Nova Era is a family owned and operated cafe and bakery, serving traditional Portuguese baked goods (we recommend the corn bread), custard tarts (natas!), lunch items (tosta mista, fish cakes etc.) and specialty cakes. The food at Nova Era was decent fresh and satisfying for a quick bite or casual meal. However, the service was quite slow. It took a long time for the staff to clear our plates, and we waited a while just to be offered the dessert menu. I don’t know, it could be because they were too busy, but the pace felt a bit off and inattentive. With quicker service and more attention to customers, the experience could be much better.

Wife and I both had the bifana. Sooooo filling! Best part? They’re open super early on a Sunday. Great service as well. Definitely recommended

Follow @bredgyeats on IG for more food pictures! Thanks to T&T, my new Portuguese tart obsession has catapulted me on a nata adventure all around Toronto, stopping by the West End this time. The crispy puff pastry shell flakes apart as you bite into the jiggly custard, which has a fragrant eggy aroma and subtle caramelized taste from the leopard-like pattern etched on top.

Got some desserts for the christmas holidays and boy can i say that quality was horrendous. I paid $55 for a Bolo Rei just for it to come all burnt dry and without any of the fruits inside. It literally looks like i got a load of bread but paid the price of $55. unacceptable. I also got some of the famous pear shape pastries with the marmalade and coconut and boy can i also say that those came horrendous too. they didn’t even cook them. PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THIS LOCATION. THE QUALITY IS HORRIBLE. I WILL NOT BE RETURNING ANY MORE TO THIS LOCATION

Smashing IT! Bring me back to fond memories when I used to go to Nova Era Bakery on Bloor Street near Ossington. I miss the way the community would all come together to this bakery. Early in the morning before work, for lunch, for a sweet tooth snack, early diner etc. Visited Nova Era bakery for the first time in years tonight. since so many of them have closed down. This Nova Era Bakery is snuggle away on Geary Avenue which is not be revitalize with many condo developments. Enjoyed my custard tart and a nice cup of coffee. Can't wait to come back and enjoy my very missed Tosta Mista! Great customer service, Great atmosphere. Great company! Till next time! Aproveite a companhia mal posso esperar para voltar! (I used Google Translator so don't judge to harshly if I got the sentence wrong LOL)

Google
I usually go to this place twice a month... the food is good, they have delicious bread, a great variety of desserts, and other interesting options. I have no complaints about the food, but the customer service is terrible. It seems like some of the people behind the counter aren't comfortable, or aren't happy with what they do, or definitely don't want to treat customers well. It's happened to me, my wife, or my teenage son several times... we keep going there for the food, not the service.

Google
I visited Nova Era Padaria in Toronto this past Saturday, and the experience was amazing! Daniela Messias attended to me and Sinara with such kindness and professionalism. The service was top, and the coffee and food were absolutely delicious. If you live in the area, I highly recommend visiting them, they’re truly the best Portuguese padaria ever!

Google

Yelp
The sandwiches here are very good, and the pastries are excellent. Service is sometimes a bit slow, but as a takeout sandwich and Portuguese bakery it's great. The cod, shrimp and potato cakes are excellent here too.

Yelp
We love going to the Nova Era Bakery style bakery. We were walking by and decided to drop in for some treats. The treats are good as always and enjoyed chatting with the staff. I love how much space these bakeries have. If you are in the mood for some good treats, Nova is a great stop!

Yelp
Was in the neighbourhood this past weekend, saw some older folks coming out with large boxes of baked goods, the reviews on Google seemed amazing and thought we'd check it out. Incredibly disappointed. Met with an incredibly rude staff. I tried to ask about what one of the products were, and not only did she not answer my question but she was incredibly condescending. Not only that, she also wasn't even wearing her mask properly (nose sticking out... might as well not be wearing one). Got an eclair and Portuguese tart out of panic from the hostility. Eclair pastry was stale. Portuguese tart was good though, so the single star was for that. I'm sure the bakery itself isn't bad, but don't expect any kind of courteous service but I surely won't be going back

Yelp
I came here after eating nearby for lunch and was hit with a smell of fresh bread. My coworker and I got some the egg custard pastries. The crust was flaky and yummy and the custard was good too. They had a very large selection of fresh bread and I mean LARGE. And different types of loaves as well. This is a good bakery to get bread and things like that, but not the best for a wide variety of actual desserts

Yelp
Very bad customer service. Employees are not friendly. we are going to buy your product, not to beg

Yelp
Great bakery that makes excellent fresh sandwiches. The Steak and Mushroom Melt and Chicken Club sandwiches are excellent. Quick and friendly service. It's become one of my lunch spots as it's around the corner from my workplace.

Yelp
Nova Era Bakery is at a side street just North of Dupont East of Dufferin. Right across and next to garages? I was a little confused when my GPS confidently asked me to turn into this small street.. The inside does looks surprisingly clean and cozy... If you want to stay in and chill, just order at the counter and it will be delivered. I have my usual custard tart ($1.15) and cappuccino ($2.50) were both enjoyable. The smell of freshly baked bread filled the air............... Just love that smell!

Yelp
Visited for the 1st time a couple of hour ago. Immediately upon entering, I smelled a strong malodour of MOULD in the air. Maybe the food is good but I'm not going to breathe in nasty, TOXIC mould spores so I left right away. The owners need to deal with their toxic mould problem A.S.A.P. Customers should not be inhaling these spores!!!!

Yelp
Nova Era is THE place to get custard tarts. I've been to other locations and they are the real deal when it comes to Portuguese pastries. The custard tarts are so good that I never really order anything else. Sorry for the useless review as I'm basically reviewing one item. But this item is so good that you should come for. The custard pastries are also by far the cheapest in town, while being the most authentic. I've seen these go for $2 each at some Italian stores, or about $2 at St Lawrence market. Here a dozen was under $8. Forgot the exact price. Totally worth it. It's starting to be about as cheap as Chinese egg tarts!

Yelp
This is usually my turn to bakery because I live nearby. I find it is always a hit or miss. I purchased some tiramisu pastries.. they were stale, they were dry, hard and had a mouldy taste to them. I really wish they would keep their pastries fresher. I think two days max. This pastries were well over a week old. Suggestion to own after two or three days put them on sale or throw the pastries out. Those pastries were absolutely horrible.

Yelp
This bakery is a chain and they have many delicious and scrumptious baked goods, breads, desserts and more!

Yelp
Just want to say great coffee usually and baked goods!! I go once a week already for chorizo pastry and or sugar donut . However when I go it always disorganized and the lines are confusing and rude staff noth at keele and Rogers and Geary ave. There are no labelled or help for names and ingredients for pastries etc... When there is help they get the bakrs goods then u wait again to be cashed out. Rude staff. I live in the area this week off work went there 4l3 time 13 14 15th of may. Girl with glasses and petite my favourite. Btw Everyone else seems all over the place under staffed or poorly trained . Its busier sat and sun night not so much but experienced no debit when the sign said sorry no stm two different things j wasn't the only to complain about it . The girl rudely said I know and took the sign down. Took 25 min for 220 gr spicy salami 3 bread sticks Because he walked in went to get the meat and she said wait in the line . As we did and had other people served before us. Next day 2 girls on cash then 1 and people got served before my line. Two men behind me and the girl came overlooked me and served them . To flirtatious serve them then me and a more professional manner no sorry no thing . Aslo brining my friend with me she explain how they were talking about us in Portuguese. About the debit sign I enjoy this place lot . There is some changes l I think tobe made such as signs( Portuguese and English. Ingredients and names on food and one more staff onsite for extra help. Will return in Hope's of change Nikki

Yelp
Amazing wedding cakes. The cake my wife picked, was the culinary highlight of the night. The baker took his time and went through designs with my wife & I, hands down best money I've ever spent on baked goods, at a portuguese bakery.

Yelp
Got the "Nata" here. Nice crispy portugese custard tart. Local and authentic taste.

Yelp
Great local bakery. Tons of bread, pastries and lunch options. They also make beautiful special order cakes.

Caitlin W.

Yelp
Ordered my wedding cake from here. Originally went to their Kitchener location and tried their strawberry short cake. Loved it, except the cake was a little dry and the bottom was soggy. I figured that it would taste better fresh. So I ordered a 3 tier wedding cake and gave examples and spent a half hour on the phone with the baker explaining how I'd like it decorated. (I wanted some little icing banners and roses). A couple of months later I start getting harassed by this person named Ben. Finally I get time to call Ben and they say that they couldn't possibly do a 3 tier cake in august and that the old baker was wrong and made a mistake. Instead of offering me a refund and an option to cancel and go with another bakery they say I have to come and pick up the cake from head office instead of the original deal of getting it delivered to the nearby location if I won't consent to a 2 tier. They also want me to spend another half hour on the phone with them explaining an incredibly simple cake design. I try to set up a cake tasting and Ben is everything but helpful. I had to give up the tasting because I honestly couldn't deal with them for another moment. In the end I paid $150 for a two tier cake that was insanely dry and didn't even come close to the decorations I wanted. And congratulations was spelt wrong!! All head office staff I interacted with were rude and treated me like garbage. But the employees getting paid minimum wage at the bakery were actually delightful. If you are getting a cake made for a special day. Wedding or not. It will be less stressful and probably cheaper to take a baking and cake decorating class and do the whole thing yourself than to hire these jerks!

Yelp
Our local bakery has a fairly stable and unchanging stock of breads and rolls (really appreciate the fresh whole grain loaves). Great (and addictive) custard tarts and delicious palmiers. So why the 3 stars only (maybe I should go with 4?)?... Partially because the outside is always full of cigarette butts, garbage and generally pretty grubby. But mainly it's due to the sudden introduction of a 5 cent charge for plastic bags. I don't mind paying if the company is donating the funds to an environmental group, and as an attempt to reduce the use of plastic...but that's not why Nova Era is doing it. The staff told me it's a law. This is a lie. There's not been a city bylaw about plastic bags since 2012/13. I was also told that other stores charge more for bags...sort of irrelevant. I'm not blaming the staff at all. Just wondering why Nova Era has started charging and why they are telling their customers it's because of a non-existent law.

Drew W.

Yelp
Look. The food is good but the staff only serves Portuguese people. It's ridiculous. And it's not a one-off thing. Every time I'm in there sure enough I'm overlooked and the last to be served, even if I was first in. The good thing is not all Nova Era's are like this and the food is equally as good at other ones. vá se ferrar empurrões

Yelp
We love this place. They make the BEST chicken club sandwich! You can to choose your own bread and everything. The best part is that they make all their sandwiches with love. Seriously, you can taste it. They have really decent coffee & espresso too! Plus when I'm walking home from work in the wee hours of the morning... the whole street smells like baking. Amazing.
