Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center

I’ve visited the Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center at least five times over the past three years since I’ve been living in Nyack. It’s one of the places I enjoy taking friends who are visiting from out of state or experiencing Nyack for the first time, as it always adds something meaningful to the day. Beyond being the house where Edward Hopper was born and raised, the museum features gallery spaces with rotating exhibitions of photography and painted artwork. In the back garden, they also host seasonal events, such as jazz nights during the summer, which are excellent and well worth attending if you visit at the right time of year. Edward Hopper is one of the key figures in the modern portrayal of American life during the 20th century, and visiting his home adds an important layer of context to his work. On a personal note, I’ve been a fan of his art since 2020. After discovering his work and later seeing his exhibition at the Whitney, I eventually ended up living here. Being able to visit his home continues to be something that truly fascinates me. For anyone looking for something to do in a small and walkable village like Nyack, I recommend strolling along Broadway and including this stop in your day. It’s a compact, cultural visit that adds a nice bit of depth and character to the experience.

Arrived just before closing expecting to rush through and leave quickly. Eileen welcomed us in and shared her wealth of information. Eileen breathed life into the house and shared her infectious energy with these two lifelong Hopper fans. Great exhibit showing photos of the inspiration behind many of Hoppers paintings, personal items from Hopper and his family, and a great gallery space with other artists work. We will be back to enjoy the Museum and town again. And hopefully to catch Eileen doimg her thing again!

A nice small museum that is of great importance. Most of the drawings, sketches, and belongings are from Edward's childhood. Do see his bedroom, you can get an idea of how the lighting in his paintings reflect the time living in this home. Also, talk to the person who sells the tickets. She is charming and can tell you so much about Edward Hopper, his upbringing, marriage, and life. She brings the place alive and brings you back to how the area was during his life.

If I could list more stars, I would. This little museum was such a delight on a cold winter day. Aileen at the front desk greeted us warmly and made the experience priceless with stories of the history of the museum and area. We left with a much greater understanding of Hopper and how his home life influenced his work. If you’ve appreciated “Woman in the Sun”, you should pop by Nyack to read about Hopper’s muse & wife Jo. Read one of her loopy handwritten letters upstairs describing “Nighthawks” publications if you want to smile. The selections of the museum, while lacking the famous paintings, showcase the personality of Hopper and those around him. Each time I see a Hopper painting, I’ll be thinking fondly of his childhood home and doodles we saw here. There’s a lovely creative room on the second floor where anyone can draw and spend some time after looking at the museum and some local art. Thank you so much for having this place where art is not just preserved, but encouraged to grow.

Loved it here!!!! I was so glad to finally make it to the Hopper museum to learn more about his early life and more interestingly, his wife!!!! It was so nice to meet Eileen, the tour guide who was so kind and engaging, showing us around and giving us extra details.

I'm a believer in serendipity, or maybe it's synchronicity. November 18th, 2022, my life changed forever when I saw the Hopper exhibit at the Whitney in NYC. I was always enamored by Nighthawks and the like, but seeing all of the works/sketches up close, was something else. I was told many years ago to take the train up to Nyack and see the Hopper house and the foliage, on November 17th, 2023 I did so. I was not disappointed. The admission ticket allows you to roam the house freely, but Eileen (who greeted me when I walked in) was a wealth of information and gave me my own personal tour. We spoke at length about many things and I spent over two hours there devouring all I could, especially information on Edward's wife Josephine Verstille Hopper (who's been neglected over the years - hopefully that will change). Eileen was kind enough to annotate a map of the places in Nyack that inspired Hopper paintings. I visited them as well. I will be back in the summer time for their storied Jazz Nights in the garden behind the house. If you love Hopper be sure to check this off your bucket list. I'm glad I did.

Small house the docent was very nice and knowledgeable. Can easily be done in under 1 hour. There are some letters and sketches along with various memorabilia type stuff. However, if you are looking to see paintings everything they had went to the Whitney per Hopper's estate.

This is a sparkling hidden gem, tucked away in Edward Hopper's birthplace, the village of Nyack. Located about 15 miles (a 35-50 minute commute) from Manhattan, it would make for a great half day or full day trip from the city! This home was built and owned by Hopper's maternal grandparents. It was in danger of demolition until the village worked to collectively buy and restore the property. It opened as a museum in 2017. The museum boasts many early boyhood sketches. Hopper's bicycle is on display. Many personal artifacts are on view, including journals and painting/tool kits. You can view his bedroom, arranged as he would have had it, with an inspiring view of the Hudson. There are also works by his wife, Jo, who was a major influence on his career, and a key to his success. The staff here are so enthusiastic, kind, and knowledgeable. I could sense the passion they felt about the subject. There is also a great, informative film. The info boards are clean, clear, and concise. There is also a map and QR code to lead you around Hopper's Nyack, where you can see places important to him and places he painted. Nyack is a very walkable downtown, and the house is near many shops and restaurants. Entry fee is reasonable. I donated extra. The gift shop has some nice items! The Whitney has an extensive Hopper exhibit on view through March 5, 2023. And even after this is over, the Whitney holds a huge Hopper collection on view regularly. NYU maintains Hopper's NYC studio, though it has recently been closed due to COVID. It would be easy for a Hopper fan to plan a long weekend or a couple of days visiting these various sites and learning more about the artist (he was 6'7!). I can't rave enough about this museum or the staff. A PBS documentary comes out later this year and the preview I saw was wonderful.

This house isn't very big or have any of Edward Hopper's paintings, but it is an interesting glimpse into his youth that you can see how the quiet suburbs spoke to his figurative works. There is a short video and some of his early possessions and photographs, then a contemporary art exhibit, and upstairs there's one room decorated for how it would have been during Hopper's lifetime. The artist Tomokazu Matsuyama reinterpreted Hopper's work which was an interesting visual experience. There was no tour, but the employee did give us some additional information in between other people coming in to pay. She seemed very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Hopper and explained the house was in disrepair after Hopper's death and restored by a nonprofit. It's a pretty cheap self-guided experience but cool information to gather. The gift shop is minimal and parking is paid on street, but it's a cute street, so you might as well walk around a little after. For art lovers, it's a neat little spot to visit, and I'm glad it has been preserved. It's worth stopping by if you're a fan of Hopper's.

A rare glimpse into the influential realists painter's formative years. Of particular value are inclusion of his spouse Josephine Nivison Hopper's role as muse and painter herself. The Queen Anne cottage is lovely and worth a visit for its architecture alone. The remarkable wisteria shading the front porch leads to a gallery with well curated exhibitions, rooms with graphically effective didactic and archival materials on Hopper's artistic path, and the artists' own bedroom with orginially furnishinbgs and objects. No guards, no stanchions--everything is open and welcoming.

We had a very inspiring visit to the Edward Hopper House, both the staff and the place are wonderful!

Have visited many times over the years and this wonderful little museum gets better & better!

This was a very fun subtrip while I was around Nyack. It was very convent for me as I had only 3 hours on my rented bike and this was a good 30 min walk through. The house itself is quite lovely and you get to see and learn his early life before he moved to NYC. Though you won't find any museum level painting you do to see some artifacts of his and what he used to sketch around his time here. The woman who was servicing everyone was quite an enjoyable conversationalist as well. She did a good job contextualizing the rooms and being overall friendly. I would highly recommending checking this place out if your in the area.

What an absolute delight it was to visit Edward Hopper's birthplace and home until age 26 in picturesque Nyack, NY! My out-of-town guests and I, all Hopper aficionados, had the pleasure of a guided tour by Executive Director Kathy Bennewitz who was extremely knowledgeable and very gracious. This visit has enhanced my desire to learn even more about Hopper and his impressionable body of work.

For a true appreciator of Edward Hopper, the home in which he grew up and lived in until the age of 26 is a special place to visit. Plan on 45 minutes to an hour and be sure to take a seat and watch the video on his life and work, narrated by Steve Martin; it is informative and thought provoking, and takes you through his early life, his move to NYC and his later years in Cape Cod. Take a moment to stand in Hoppers bedroom window, and look out on the Hudson, imagining the inspiration he drew from the light, the river and the boats and maritime life he witnessed as a boy. If you like, there is a room where visitors may sit and create art of their own. Nyack is a special place and the Hopper House was the highlight of our day.

The Edward Hopper House is little gem in the lovely town of Nyack. It's a fun stop for tourists and locals alike! We found our volunteer tour-guide, Renee, engaging, fun, and knowledgeable! An enjoyable must-do experience for anyone who loves art, history and Americana.

The Edward Hopper House is magnificent. It's in the particularly picturesque town Nyack; in old homes, bushes and treees. There are historical signs. It is worth seeing as it's the main home of famous New York building and landscape painter Edward Hopper! Rebel review: 5

What a great space! I went here with friends on July 4th right before closing and happened to catch the Dorothea Lange exhibit, which was quite poignant. The house is small, and we were the only ones there so we did not feel rushed at all. It was lovely. Being in Hopper's childhood home is pretty neat - make sure to check out the back room (formerly the kitchen) to see his personal letters, paint tools, and photos. Admission is $8 but only $2 for students, although on Thursdays from 12-1 it is free. The woman at the desk even let us browse for free because we were hesitant to go in at first and it was practically closing time. She was so pleasant and we enjoyed talking with her. There is also a gift shop with many posters and books about Hopper. The Hopper House also apparently has concerts in the back garden during the summer months, which sounds like so much fun! I may have to check it out :)

If you are a fan of Edward Hopper, then you definitely need to come to the house he grew up in and experience it for yourself. I'll be upfront and acknowledge that there is not much to do in the house itself. There is not much here other than a few minor pieces attributed to a very young Hopper and a few pieces attributed to his wife who was also an artist. Additionally, they hold art exhibits for other artists here as well as hold performances in the back yard on occasions. What makes the Hopper house worthwhile is not what is on display, but the fact that you are actually able to get a basic perspective of the territory where this artistic genius grew up. You can go up to his bedroom and look out the windows as he did every day of his impressionable years. You can walk the street of his home town and see many of the buildings which appeared in some of his famous works. They are all within walking distance. I definitely appreciated this visit and while I'm not entirely sure whether it would warrant and return visit absent a great art show being presented that I wanted to see, it was certainly worth the one time trip. Again, I highly recommend visiting the Hopper house and strolling the surrounding area to anyone who has ever loved Hopper's work. It will definitely give you a unique perspective into his works and you will never look at them the same again.

Nice little historic home, close to Main Street in Nyack. Sketch sessions once a week all year except summer. Nice people. Art shows exhibit work that run the gamut in styles and execution. Worth a visit if in the area.

The Hopper House charges $7 an adult to enter, and yet it is tiiiiny and I have seen holes in the wall bigger than this. There is no reason to stop by, even if you are already in town in Nyack. Do not believe the positive reviews of this place. While the staff is really super friendly and give off a great vibe (hence the two stars instead of the one), I would avoid this place entirely, even if I lived next door.

Worth seeing ONLY if it's not out of your way AND you're willing to think of the $5 it'll cost you as a donation to the cause of preserving a great american artist's childhood home. There is no actual Hopper work there that is worth seeing. I didn't expect a great collection, but I expected at least a few paintings worth looking at. The coolest thing was his childhood bike. In a way the place is a scam-- the only original paintings there are by local artists who want to sell their work in a context that may boost its perceived value.

Best insight into the life of one of America's great homegrown painters. Hopper's life is significantly tied to this one address. It is an anchor throughout. The permanent works on display are rather limited, but many of his most valued works lift inspirations directly from neighboring streets. There's a walking tour that complements the house visit.
