Hung Fong Chinese Restaurant

Welp, my dogs have a lot of food but my belly isn’t too full. The Lemon chicken was the only good thing about this place. My plate was $13 and I saw if we sub for fried rice it’s a $1something more. We both wanted this. The look of food was not what we expected. We wanted Just plain fried rice like the mall. Only 1 plate was like this. We got charged $11 for chicken fried rice yet no chicken lol seems scammy. The taste was just onion heavy. Server was slow, he just kept hanging out with cashier. We never wanted to leave a place so fast.

I have been a long time patron of Hung Fong, but this last visit was not as good. Firstly, I don't like to judge anyone's habits or lifestyle outside of work, but I don't think it's appropriate to have small stuffed animals dangling from the ears while serving food to customers (which my server had). Secondly, the food was a bit lacking. It was my son's first time eating there and I could tell he didn't like it, but he didn't want to hurt my feelings because it was my idea to dine here. My server was friendly and attentive and the food was just ok. My favorite part of the meal was the egg drop soup (always good in my opinion).

My family and I have always wanted to experience dining at the oldest Chinese restaurant in Texas so we decided what better way to do that than to celebrate a birthday dinner for my mom! We saw in the photos that there were LED flags on the ceiling usually lit up and we were excited to see them when we arrived but unfortunately most of the lights had gone out during our visit (the flag designs themselves still remain intact thankfully). The decorations around the restaurant were very pleasant and made the place feel like a cozy home. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming and provided lovely service through our whole experience adding to the warmth of the place. They checked in with us fairly often as well seeing if needed refills or any other servicing. We weren't super hungry so we kept it simple and ordered 2 pu pu platers, a chinese hot tea (it comes as a pot; I'm unsure, but I think you could request multiple cups for one pot perhaps?), some soft drinks and my dad and sister decided on the egg drop soup. The food was filling just sharing the platters amongst ourselves (although we found the ribs quite tough and a bit dry, but the food as a whole was flavorful and tasty). They even gave us extra plates so that we could comfortably share and everything stayed pretty warm while we dined (the tea remaining quite hot for some time). The overall experience of the place had a cheerful, relaxed buzz and I would definitely return and urge others to come visit and support a historical landmark as well!

Have been coming here for years. In the past this place used to have amazing and flavorful food. All of that has changed. I have always loved the decor of this restaurant but when you look up you can see a lot of water damaged and parts of the ceiling look like it's going to fall one day soon. Family and I dined in and ordered: -3 deluxe plates: 1. Lemon chicken and chicken chow mein 2. Lemon chicken and Mongolian beef 3. Lemon chicken and beef with broccoli Soups: 2 wonton and 1 egg drop 2 egg roll and 2 cheese rangoon - shrimp chop suey - order of Rangoon - 1 egg roll -8 oz to go sweet and sour Deluxe L.C. with chicken chow mein. Lemon chicken is always great here. The chicken is white and juicy. The sauce comes in a small cup and taste like delicious sweet lemon. Chicken chow mein comes with the crunchy fried noodles on top of chicken and veggies in a white sauce. It really had no flavor. Fried rice needed to be dressed with soy sauce and sweet and sour. Deluxe L.C. with Mongolian beef. The Mongolian beef had no spice at all. The flavor was a bit bland but the sauce tasted nice with the crispy veggies. Deluxe L.C. with broccoli and beef. There was barely any meat(which is fine) or water chest nuts but plenty of onions, carrots, and broccoli. The meat is sliced very thin and extremely tough and chewy. The veggies are crispy and crunchy. None of the items had seasonings. Shrimp Chop Suey is usually a hit. This time around all you could taste was salt. It usually comes with fried noodles but not this time. I am guessing it is an extra charge. We did as for some but never got any. Wonton soup bland. Just tasted like hot water and noodles. Egg drop soup no flavor even when pepper was added. Not even an egg taste. The consistency is nice and thick. Egg roll no longer has ginger in it. If it wasn't for the hot greasy fried wrap it wouldn't have flavor instead it tasted like greasy fried chicken crust, which is guilty pleasure of mine. Cheese rangoon has a strong onion flavor and I'm thinking they add like a crab flavoring because there was a small hint of that. The wonton wrapper was not crispy but soggy. Overall the quality and quantity has gone done and not worth the price. $89 before tip

My favorite things about Hung Fong: The egg rolls……are…SO good (I cannot pad up a hand rolled egg roll). Their shrimp toast is good…bonus points for the lil’ half cherries! I LOVE their wonton soup - it’s like deconstructed wonton soup and I really enjoyed it! Flavorful but light and gentle (if you add a little chili crisp, it elevates it a notch and is SO good). The general vibe - family operated, super chill and very retro. I love all of the little details - the clock on the wall near the entrance is SO cool. Oh - the service is FANTASTIC!

Haven’t been in this establishment in 15 years and the food was absolutely delicious just like I remember. Jeff was absolutely incredible. Very attentive and knowledgeable. Egg drop soup was absolutely delicious beef and broccoli is my favorite lemon chicken sauce is super tasty and I think the fried rice was absolutely the best. However the restaurant look wasn’t what I remember. It use to be fancy and so vibrant now it’s look so run down and sad. No music no smiling faces. I hope this place gets revamped. Amazing food thank you

Super great food and excellent service. No wonder they have been in busisness since 1939. I absolutely love their Fresh Hand Rolled Egg Rolls. Some of the best egg rolls I've ever had.

The food quality has really deteriorated from the last time I visited. Hot and sour soup was a tasteless thick glob. Eggs Foo Yung was tasteless as was the gravy which was also a brown glob. The bacon wrap shrimp was more like a flat shrimp paddy. The only good food was their egg rolls. Sadly to say will not be returning. Place is run-down and in need of a good cleaning. Staff was nice and attentive.

Free parking. Shareable portion sizes. Best wonton soup in town. Staff is always pleasant and friendly.

This was a huge letdown, especially for a restaurant with such a long history. The sesame chicken was extremely tough with a watery, flavorless sauce. The egg rolls had a strange, unpleasant taste, and the oil they were fried in tasted old -- to the point that we couldn't finish them. The fried rice was yellow, dry, and completely bland, with no real fried rice flavor at all. Nothing tasted fresh, well-seasoned, or carefully prepared. It honestly felt like quality control has been completely lost here. We were really hoping for a classic, comforting Chinese meal and instead left disappointed and still hungry. We won't be back, but I hope the owners look at this feedback and can turn this institution around.

This is the oldest Chinese food in San Antonio so I had to give it a try. Upon entry you can tell the restaurant is a little dated but sometimes that's where the best food is made so it didn't put me off just yet. A goto for me is always orange chicken. Plates come with generous portions and the pricing is reasonable. The flavor of the orange chicken was a little different than I'm used to. I didn't get that citrusy spice but it was still pretty tasty. I loved the giant wontons that were served on top. Honestly probably my favorite part. It's close to my job so I may come back and try another platter.

We had a great experience at Hong Fongs. Cecelia was our server and she was the BEST. She was so nice and very accommodating. Ask for her when you venture out there. It is a much older building but the place was clean. I love going here every time we visit San Antonio. Lemon chicken w the sauce is the best. Please go visit. Let's keep this place going.

Place definitely needs an update. I got to go. Not one whole Wonton in soup, was like chopped Wonton soup and the Wonton pieces were so soggy! 2 bites of egg foo young and something was off with taste. Right into trash. $20 wasted. What I did eat...later...right into toilet - if ya know what I mean!

Located on Broadway, not too far south from UIW, is Hung Fong Chinese Restaurant. This is a Family Style place with a large quiet dinning room and staff who are friendly and service oriented. Choose from traditional dishes like Sweet & Sour Chicken which is one of my favorites, or the Beef & Broccoli is very good as well with plenty of succulent beef. Yum. Reasonably priced and great for the whole family. I hope this helps. As Always - Eat in Good Health.

It makes me a little sad to write this. This is a San Antonio institution of sorts but I cannot come up with one positive thing to say about the experience. Okay. Maybe one thing. The staff were nice. I can overlook a dingy and dirty atmosphere if the food is outstanding. But the place was dirty. Bathroom was nasty, tables were super dirty. Like the back part by the walls had not been wiped well for many years. On to the food. The spare ribs were big but cold and greasy. Wonton soup was okay. If you are forced to eat here, get the Wonton Soup. Everything else was brown and bland. Mongolian and Kung Pao dishes were not spicy. The egg roll was overcooked and had a really weird, bland stuffing. Oh wait. The Hot Mustard was pretty spicy. That's a positive thing to end with. You've been warned about the rest.

Lunch was SO good! This place consistently puts out great food. I wish we lived closer.

Amazing service, they are so nice and kind and food amazing seasoned good with high quality. Again with the service ,amazing !!! The place looks umm a bit scary but don't be the environment is 10/10 trust when I say im picky about my food and area but this place was worth it , trust me and come try Hung Fong Chinese restaurant!!

The food quality is inconsistent. I and several friends have dined there several times and the food ranged from quite good to really bad. Service from servers was mostly fairly good. Ambiance reminds me of restaurants in San Francisco Chinatown

Service was quick, food was hot, and fresh. The eggroll was nice & crispy (hot & fresh). No picture of the egg drop soup but it hit the spot.,Always an oldie but goodie.

Got takeout tonight and it couldn't have been more unfortunate. Spare ribs that clearly had been sitting in a warmer for hours. Dry, flavorless, tough. Egg Foo Young covered in so much bland brown glop that it ruined the egg dish. Couldn't tell you what the egg foo was doing because it all tasted like old oil and brown garbage. Every portion of white rice was clumpy and dry. How has this place stayed in business for so long when actual decent Chinese exists in this city?

Do not let the "Voted best Chinese food in SA" sign in the front of the building fool you. This windowless building is definitely a time portal. The second you walk in the decor takes you back 20 years. Definitely a pass in quality of food for price. Fried rice and lemon chicken were bland. Water refills were non existent. It wasn't a good first experience.

The rice noodle soup here hits the spot when craving something warm and satisfying. The broth had a clean, savory depth (though I'd love a touch more herbal aroma), and the noodles were perfectly tender. Generous portions with fresh bean sprouts and basil on the side--nice DIY touch.

We have eaten at Hung Fongs for years. Admittedly we have only gone there or ordered out about once a year for the past few years but in the past have always enjoyed the food. Not anymore... the combination fried rice was good and so was the Kung pow chicken but the egg rolls, lemon chicken and bacon wrapped shrimp were not good. The lemon chicken was burnt the egg rolls were greasy and the bacon wrapped shrimp was tuff and chewy. The sauce was awful. To be honest this may be the last time to have Hung Fongs. Maybe new cooks or an off day but for the money spent we were very disappointed.

This place never disappoints. Serving are big, prices are not. Staff is always friendly and courteous no matter how busy or slow the restaurant is going. The vibe is a family friendly style dining. Hung Fong has been around for a long time and I don't see them going anywhere as long as they continue to serve the great food and keep pricing the way they do.

I've been goin to meet family and friends at Hung Fong for over 30 years. The food is traditional delicious. I will be coming back with family from out of town in the coming holidays. Good job to the service.

The food here is amazing for Family Style dinning. My family has been eating here for more than 50 years! Amazing service and a unique experience for dinning. Best seafood in town!

One of my grandma's favorite restaurants. My mom loved the wonton soup. No crispies for the egg drop soup. We both orders deluxe dishes that came with choice of three soups, egg, drop wonton or hot and sour soup. It also comes with your choice of eggroll or crab Rangoon's. It comes with lemon chicken and then a different side dish. I chose beef and broccoli which is a little salty and mom had chicken chow mein, which was perfect. The restaurant also sells live bamboo plants and the bamboo plant food and also different jade jewelry and jade decorations, little sculptures and tea sets. Service was excellent, and they even offered to carry our purchases to the car .

Love their food and atmosphere. The service was great too. I love Chinese food and they know how to cook it

Ordered lemon chicken and beef n broccoli. Appetizer Rangoon came out first cold n hard My food came out way before my fiancés so I couldn't eat without him. Lemon chicken was amazing. Beef was bland no flavor rice was horrible it was yellow no flavor not even fried rice. Portions very small I would never come back or waste my money on bland food I can cook better myself from Heb products for cheaper.

I was only here because it was my friend's birthday and this is the place she chose. I had the beef with broccoli, and it was pretty tasty. It was a lunch special so it was also a great price. It came with a drink -- I choose iced tea and it was not bad. Our waitress was attentive and knowledgeable, and we had an enjoyable lunch amid a nice atmosphere. I would return here with my friend, although it would probably not be my first choice for Chinese food.

Wonton or egg drop soups will never disappoint and the egg rolls are big and stuffed and so crispy and flavorful. I enjoy the lemon chicken it is tender juicy and crispy their fried rice has a good flavor profile and I enjoy ordering combination rice they have onion bean sprouts in there and I enjoy that. I also their their egg foo young the gravy is a brown savory gravy no sweetness to it which is how I prefer my gravy

I love Hung Fong. There are so many mediocre Chinese restaurants around this town. Hung Fong has the flavors I like. The place is old for sure but that just adds to its ambiance. Try it.

We ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken. There was greasy chicken with 2 raw pieces of carrot and a few raw pieces of cabbage on top. One small container of sauce. The egg rolls were soggy and falling apart and had beef gristle in the middle. The Kung Pao Chicken was very little sauce and was just average. We were disappointed because we have ordered several times in the past. We will not order again.

I am at a toss up here. Here is my dilemma the customer service is good, very polite and go out of their way for you. The place is clean inside and all is good. The food!! No where close to Chinese food. I guess if I never been to China or any other Asian country I wouldn't know. Wait, wait, if I was out of the state of Texas I would think this was the worst place ever. Here is what I to say, I got vegetable lo mein that had chicken in it. Good thing I'm not a vegetarian! Second dish was General Tso Chicken which was extremely dry and like a breaded chicken that had sauce baked on it. Not appealing or good to eat. Lastly, was pork fried rice, that in actuality was yellow rice with pieces of ham and no where close to fried. I will say this was a to go order. I am not happy or satisfied, my bags were dripping with liquid that I couldn't tell from which meal. I gave the 2 stars because very kind people. I hope they read my review and look back into what the kitchen is doing. **UPDATE** I had to come back in to do an update. I do not recommend this place at all! My family and I had the worse night ever after eating their food. We had breakfast as we started our day and this Chinese food was the only other meal of the day. So it could not had been anything else. Plus what came back up was the Chinese food ordered. Today we are all still very sick with stomach aches. So, just an FYI... be prepared for a long night. In my opinion I believe the chicken was bad.

Just to be fair we order the food on uber eats after a long day of walking around the Riverwalk! So My review is only of the food.. But I have to say the food was super hot which I can really appreciate knowing this was delivery.. Mongolian chicken 4/5 delicious Combination Lo Mein 4/5 very good 2pc Hand Rolled Egg Roll 3/5 Overall the food was delicious but their was a good amount of msg because I definitely felt it in the a.m!

Visiting for the week and was staying within walking distance. My nephew and I walked down and ordered food. When I placed my order, I asked for pints and quarts of the items I wanted. The man at the register didn't tell me they only had one size to choose from. I asked for lo mein, General Tso's, and shrimp fried rice. I canceled the shrimp fried rice when I saw it would be over $50 for just those 3 items. We were given large to go boxes of the General Tso's and the lo mein. I sampled both and wasn't impressed with either. The lo mein didn't taste like the lo mein my sister usually gets either when we're back home in WV or at the place down the road from us here in Florida. It just tasted off. My 11 yr old nephew and I agreed that the General Tso's didn't taste quite right either, and he got very little rice with his order. For the quality of the food, it was quite pricey. I doubt I'll ever get around to visiting San Antonio again, but I definitely would not eat here again. Not a very good value for the quality.

The food was great. The service was fast and delicious. The ambiance is wonderful. Would recommend the restaurant.

We just celebrated our son's birthday here with a large group. The service and food was outstanding. I hadn't had Chinese did this good in while. We will definitely be coming back soon! Highly recommend!

We have driven by this place quite a few times. Always wanted to try it. So we did. Spoiler alert, I did not take any pictures, but one. Sorry. The food was okay, we went at around 3pm when we got to the restaurant, so I am not sure if we got the lunch portion or the dinner portion. We started off with shrimp toast, very oily, but had a good taste, after o let it sit on a paper towel. Also got the cream cheese Rangoon were okay. My beautiful wife got the hot and sour soup, it had a great flavor, but we could not finish it cause it was spicy. She also got the lemon chicken. It was okay. I got the pineapple chicken, the sauce was good, better than the lemon sauce, but not by much. Portions were good, if it was a lunch portion. I had one beer, Lucky Buddha, never had it, so I tried it. Not bad, a light beer. Service was okay, somewhat attentive to our table. Atmosphere was okay, plenty of seating. Good for large groups.

Yum!! Highly recommend this place. The Lemon Chicken is a must try/get . We also ordered chicken lo mein, beef & broccoli, walnut shrimp, and egg drop soup. All recommended. The service is good, especially for being the oldest Chinese restaurant in Texas (since 1939!!). The ambience and decor is very homey and reminiscent of an old school Chinese American restaurant with the Chinese character blessings on the wall. Came here during December, so also enjoyed the Christmas lights around the booths. Overall 5/5 stars . Will definitely return if/when in town!

Value and wonderful food awaits you and your family and friends. Never have been disappointed with anything I have ordered for over 30 years now and counting. I do miss the new year calendar though!

Service has seriously dwindled at this location. Andrew was the waiter "servicing" our table when we notified him the order was incorrect. We asked if it could be made correctly he became very rude and verbally abusive. He walked away because the situation started to heat up (on his end) and started talking with the Manager. When we approached the Manager We overheard the conversation, Andrew started telling him all this stuff that was inaccurate. We told the manager what transpired and the Manager still defended him after Andrew made a seen becoming loud and flipping us off in front of a packed dining room. All because we asked for our order to be corrected. Hung Fong's needs to remember who has kept their business going all these years. THE COMMUNITY! Treating your patrons in this manner is totally inappropriate and disrespectful. Hopefully no one else has to experience this. I can't even give a star, but I have too so it posts.

honestly, I don't really understand these bad reviews. It's probably just different food taste but I love the food here

Food was great. I had not been there in 35 years. Service was average but the poor lady had a bunch of tables.

Me and my wife came here and we were kinda sketched out by the look of the outside of the building but inside is beautiful and the food is great quality, we got seated fast but of course it wasnt too packed and our food took no more then 10 minutes to come out, great service 9/10 i would definitely come back again!

This has been here forever since I was a kid it's just for typical Chinese American food, friendly stuff, great environment, been here for ages!

What you are charged on the check may be more than what's on the menu. We ordered two lunch specials and the price on the check for each was about a dollar more than what was listed on the menu. The cashier seemed a little confused about it, but not surprised. He thought it was tax already added in until I pointed out that the tax was added again at the bottom. Food and service was good, but being overcharged doesn't sit right.

3 stars is the correct rating for Hung Fong. This is one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in San Antonio. At one time it was a diamond and everyone went there and tourist would be sent there from Downtown hotels. That is not the case today. It has been sometime since I have been there. I decided to spend the night in San Antonio as a staycation weekend. Decided to go there for dinner. Not a memorable evening. We were joined by three friends, all locals. All agreed, this place had fond memories for us, but it isn't the Hung Fong from years past. Don't know if the restaurant original owners sold or what. Our Server was very friendly and tried very hard to do a good job. The dining room was very outdated, worn, and dingy. Didn't look very clean. Same with the restroom. The famous neon flags on the ceiling were not fully illuminated anymore. Food lacked taste. Mongolian Beef was not spicy hot as it should be. The Hot and Sour soup was not spicy hot and lacked flavor. I had the Hung Fong shrimp. The shrimp did not taste fresh and seemed more like frozen breaded shrimp was used. The Hung Fong sauce for the shrimp was so spicy, you couldn't really taste anything else. The sauce came in a little plastic condiment cup with lid and was not even warm. We came on a Thursday and there were probably only 6 tables during dinner. I think the locals have figured out it isn't that good anymore and hotels do not send tourist. With such a small dinner crowd, it makes sense they would likely use frozen breaded shrimp. I will not return to Hung Fong. It is past its prime and it is depressing to see such a well known local establishment fade away from quality and taste. One good point was they did serve a lot of food. Unfortunately, I tossed my left overs, as after I returned to my room (I had a suite with a kitchenet) I decided, I didn't care for it when I ate it, why would I heat it up later?

Hands-down the worst Chinese restaurant on planet earth. The utensils and dinnerware were dirty. The service was atrocious. The food was inedible. I posted some pictures of the soup and entree. The entree picured is Mongolian beef and fried rice. There is no need for detail in the flavor nuances. The food here is just downright bad. My wife and I ate here for the 1st and last time on Aug 4th, 2024. Whoever was cooking should be arrested, charged, and sentenced to eat what was coming out of the kitched for the rest of their natural life.

UPDATE: I just placed an order to go and the person that picked up the phone was rude, condescending and completely unprofessional. If Famosa Gardens phone was not busy able to cancel my order and ordered from them. I'm not confident my order will be complete and I am 90% confident I'll be overcharged. Pre-pandemic I haven't been here in a long time. Had a great lunch special. The service is good with a harsh, no nonsense tone. Know that the food will be served hot and the cups while small will always filled promptly. If you haven't been here in a while it is worth another

Don't let the funky smell fool u coming in lol the food was great came out nice an hot and the service was great as well ordered a few plates to share around the portions are decent size to share with a few people got the lemon chicken with pork pretty good sesame chicken xtra crispy some egg rolls and the orange chicken everything was good

Longtime patron of Hong Fongs, over 50 years... great food, my go to is the Hong Kong Style Chow Mein, loaded eith Shrimp, Roast Pork, Chicken with assorted veggies, I request it spicy to kick it up a notch. truly recommend Hong Fongs and there sister restaurant Ding How

I must admit, I've lived in the vicinity of this restaurant for 4 years now and had not taken the opportunity to dine here until now. The outside of the restaurant doesn't appear to have windows and has an old school neon sign, so I was always skeptical, however this is definitely a restaurant you shouldn't judge based on the exterior. Once inside we were warmly greeted and promptly seated. It has a very cozy and nostalgic feel and has been in San Antonio longer than I have been alive! This is definitely a place anyone living in SA should try. We ordered several things to get a true sampling of the menu. Spring rolls, dumplings, chicken lo mein, and orange chicken. Everything was very good, but the fried spring rolls and dumplings were delicious. They were extra crisp and not soggy or oily. The lo mein was very flavorful with just the right amount sauce. The orange chicken was okay considering they have it listed as a house specialty. I felt like it was lacking a little in flavor, but maybe I will request spicy the next time. If there is one thing I would recommend, it is to come with a large group! They were definitely Texas-sized portions!
