Haggerty Museum of Art

The Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University is truly a hidden gem in Milwaukee! I was amazed to learn that admission is completely free, making world-class art accessible to everyone. Walking through the gallery, I had the unforgettable experience of seeing my first Picasso in person — something I’ll never forget. What made my visit even more meaningful was seeing a college friend’s artwork proudly displayed alongside such incredible pieces. It was surreal and inspiring to see both legendary and emerging artists represented in the same space. The museum itself is beautifully curated, peaceful, and welcoming — a perfect spot to slow down, reflect, and appreciate creativity in all its forms. The staff were kind and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere had this quiet magic that makes you want to stay longer. If you’re in Milwaukee or near the Marquette campus, do yourself a favor and stop by the Haggerty Museum of Art. It’s free, inspiring, and one of the city’s best-kept treasures.

Beautiful pieces, accessible to public with free admission, very polite staff. A pleasure to visit, i will be back again soon.

Small space for well curated exhibits. Free. You should go!

Never really thought to go to this museum, but glad we did. It was fairly small, but had a lot of thought provoking and modern art pieces, and many from "popular" or famous artists. I think it would be great for a school field trip or someone just getting into the basics of art, as it has a lot of interactive elements and a good mix of pieces within its exhibits.

The Haggerty has many pieces I do not consider "art," but given it is a small university museum and not a large operation, I'm willing to overlook. Known for its religious Dali piece (pictured) and Marc Chagall's religious pieces, it's nice place to stop by when you're in the area. Also pictured "The Great Lakes Cycle" by Alexis Rosman. The curator, Lynne, is quite nice--willing to explain the pieces and walk you through the exhibition.

I've tried on two occasions to see the Keith Haring mural, but to no avail. Although it was commissioned for the groundbreaking of the museum, and is an extremely rare piece, you chose to put it in storage, just to display some uninteresting photo art? I've never even heard of the Haggarty Museum of Art and I've lived here 46 years. You really need to keep that as a permanent piece in your museum. It's so absolutely rare, and has such a distinct and alluring connection to Marquette and Milwaukee. It'd not so much just a work of art, but part of the building. Thank you

A good small art museum on the campus of Marquette University. Visited for the first time recently and was impressed with the special exhibit of photographs by Bill Tennessen, who documented the African American experience in Milwaukee, some events that I swear I attended. Dutch Masters and religious iconography represented, and a few outstanding representations of such; but Milwaukee Art Museum is still showing the Dutch Masters (Bader) exhibition, and the Haggerty felt slightly underwhelming by recent comparison. I love the story of the Keith Haring visit - faculty, staff and students got to paint in the characters, and the visit was well documented by Milwaukee media. Incredible showpiece upon entry. The small little museum that could! We visited the Saint Joan of Arc Chapel on the same day, check it out, too.

It is free, and there is street parking in front, but is it worth your time to go there if you aren't in the neighborhood? Possibly not. If you are near by, I would recommend you pop in. The collection is very small, but it does have some interesting pieces. I think I might have enjoyed the architectures as much or more than the collection. It is probably not easy to visit the museum when the university is in session, as there probably won't be easy street parking.

You may have more art on the walls of your home or even studio apartment than the Haggerty has on display of their permanent collection. It's frustrating because this museum -- well, actually I'm hesitant to call it a museum -- has some good old masters and art of other eras. Unfortunately, they consistently ration it as if preparing for a drought. (I've been here before so I knew what to expect.) Currently, about twenty works from their collection are displayed on a tiny mezzanine. The first floor galleries, themselves not very big, have been devoted to a few temporary exhibitions. The Haggerty needs much more space and the building itself could use some repair & maintenance love.

Small museum, but you can't beat the price. They deserve your donations though. Brought some wee ones here after they reopened to townies after all the COVID-19 fun. Everyone was still wearing masks, there was one path to follow, and they had sanitizer ready. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I think they were happy to have visitors again, and I don't blame them. They explained that they have events in the galleries sometimes, such as yoga or ballet. Would be nice to see, i think. The building is pretty interesting architecturally, with the cubes poking out of it and all. The art didn't knock my socks off on this visit, but you never know what you'll find. The Keith Haring construction fence mural was pretty cool though, and I like how he let bystanders help paint it. There was also a painting of a kapok tree that led to a discussion about crown shyness (look it up, it's neat) so we got some science in there too. The kids also got some activity books, which occupied them on the ride home. I don't know if they have them all the time, but worth an ask i guess, The 'gift shop' is a single display case with some shirts and stuff in it. They also had nice clean bathrooms. We parked on the street and paid the meter, there were plenty of spots on a Friday afternoon. It's worth a trip, everyone should visit atleast once. And keep an ear out for new exhibitions and come back when something sounds fun.

This museum is a perfect little gem on Marquette's campus. For one, it's free. every day. What's not to love about that? Two, it's small and not overwhelming. I hate walking into a huge museum and feeling like I'll never get through the entire thing. Three, it has an original Salvidor Dali!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Four, it has a crazy scary portrait room of really really old people that is fascinating. Five, it does a great job of bringing really interesting exhibits to campus. Six, it's free!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This museum is a treasure. Impressive collection. Regularly bringing in interesting exhibits. It's the perfect size -- small enough to really take everything in, but still open and spacious. It's pretty easy to make it through the museum in an hour or so. And...it's free every day (although they do accept donations), making great art accessible to almost everyone.

This museum is very small and only has 3 small exhibits, currently. I did enjoy the exhibit of Biblical sketches, but other than that it wasn't a very exciting visit. But of course, since it is free, you really can't complain! There is plenty of visitor parking on the Marquette campus and it was nice to walk around the campus during my visit. The staff members were also nice.
