St. Anthony Starbucks Is Latest Minnesota Location to Join Unionization Wave - Eater Twin Cities

"The Star Tribune reports that Shawn McKenzie, co-owner of Café Cerés and one of the Twin Cities’ most lauded pastry chefs, will join Rustica Bakery as executive chef. McKenzie is a Portland transplant who got her start leading the pastry program at three of Isaac Becker’s restaurants: Burch Steak and Pizza, 112 Eatery, and Bar La Grasa. From there, she ran Penny’s, a small chain of cafés and coffee shops, and then opened Café Cerés in partnership with chef Danny del Prado (of trio Martina, Colita, and Rosalia). Café Cerés’ menu is influenced by McKenzie’s culinary travels through the Middle East: she’s known for her babka and tahini carrot cake, among other things. Rustica’s bakery has been in flux during the pandemic: after a brief partnership with Bread Lab, owner Greg Hoyt closed down wholesale production. McKenzie’s presence in Rustica’s bakery means increased capacity for Café Cerés — and look for more of her flair among Rustica’s classic croissants and muffins." - Justine Jones

"Artisan Bread & Sweets at Rustica Neighborhood bakery, Rustica, bakes classic and unique varieties of breads with daily specials including brioche (Tuesdays), currant rye (Fridays), and egg braid with raisins (Fridays). Their hands-on approach brings out the best in taste and texture in their breads as well as their pastries, cookies (try the bittersweet chocolate), and desserts."

The Best Treats for Morning Office Meetings in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"With craggy, sugar-crusted tops and crisp, burnished edges, the scones at Rustica always hit the perfect balance of buttery layers and hefty mix-ins. The excellent, classic English currant is always available, but the daily specials are the way to go: particularly Tuesday’s chocolate ginger, a dark chocolate dough studded with sparkling bits of candied ginger and Friday’s lemon poppyseed." - Julie Yu

Rustica Coffee and Bakery is a great spot to start the day. The artisanal bread is incredibly delicious, and the pour over coffee is freshly made and well-prepared. Highly recommended for a quality breakfast experience.

The pastries are in a class of their own. Went when they had an apricot pistachio danish and it absolutely knocked my socks off; the perfect balance of tart and nutty. Truly inspired and feel fortunate to have them in the area 🥹

The service was excellent, and so was the atmosphere. However, I tried several desserts and thought they were overly sweet. I don't understand why a turkey club sandwich tasted sweet and had syrup/honey on it. Their latte also was very sweet. I didn't like it and wish they would provide healthier options.

I just returned from my first visit to Rustica in Wayzata. I was looking forward to it for a while after reading about the new location and knowing about the bakery’s reputation. I was disappointed and cannot recommend it unfortunately. But with a little effort in the owner’s part I’m sure they can improve and make it a destination bakery for the area. It’s not that it isn’t a nice building or environment, or not a nice location. It’s that it’s very expensive for what you get. And because Wayzata residents probably don’t care much about how much they are charged for things…I’m sure the owners don’t care that it’s an expensive spot. But I spent $57 (excluding a 15% tip given for counter service) on a breakfast for two and everything was just middling. The coffee and latte were small and average (and expensive). The two breakfast sandwiches were runny and slimey…impossible to eat without using a dozen of their coarse napkins. The chocolate croissant concealed its chocolate while the cinnamon roll was literally hard as a rock and Indiana Jones might have been the only adventurer to find the golden soft cinnamon center. And the room was packed…SRO. It was uncomfortable waiting for the order to arrive…and uncomfortable, tight seating if you could even find a place to sit. I’m sure this will be resolved in the summer when outside seating becomes available. It didn’t help that the manager tied up one of the seats with his laptop discreetly watching the action. And the line was long but it did move efficiently. You were able to view most of their offerings behind a glass case. The gentleman behind the counter asked nobody in particular if anybody had an order he could start on so I piped up and asked for two breakfast sandwiches. I knew I was in trouble when he rolled his eyes and told me that he couldn’t prep breakfast sandwiches but only baked goods and other sandwiches…just like he already said out loud. I slunk back into line with my head held low embarrassed at my mistake. But the water was great! It was cold and fresh and was a self-service spigot with dozens of larger clear plastic cups. Unfortunately you had to get through a half-dozen people waiting for their orders to come up in order to get there…but it was well worth the trip. I’m going back to see what they offer during off-hours and correctly order breakfast sandwiches with scrambled eggs rather than eggs over easy. And I might even ponder getting a slice of the small $89 chocolate cake (!).

I only had their coffee, which was quite good. They offer a wide variety of baked goods, all nicely showcased. The place was busy, but customers seemed considerate and didn’t linger too long. The atmosphere was friendly and inviting, though a bit loud due to the many conversations. I’ll definitely be back—hopefully to try some of those baked goods next time.

I love to stop here when I'm nearby. The bittersweet cookies are beyond delicious. Their coffee drinks have a more mild flavor, but the ingredients are high quality. The store has lots of tables and seating, though it's tight for standing space if you're opting for to-go. The staff are kind and quick.

Rustica Bakery and Café in St. Louis Park is such a charming little spot that instantly makes you feel cozy the moment you walk in. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with the smell of fresh pastries and espresso drifting through the air. I tried their lox bagel, and honestly, it was a 10/10, perfectly balanced with fresh salmon, creamy spread (it was so good), and that ideal bagel chew that’s hard to find outside New York. It felt like the kind of breakfast you want to savor slowly on a lazy morning. I also grabbed a pumpkin spice latte, which was decent and definitely gave off those cozy fall vibes, though it wasn’t the star of the show compared to that incredible bagel. Still, between the friendly service, relaxed vibe, and beautifully made food, Rustica is the kind of place you’ll want to revisit—whether it’s for a quiet coffee moment or to treat yourself to something freshly baked and delicious.

Among a dozen or so variety of bakery items they have, their Three Cheese Danish is so tasty and my favorite. The earthy tone interior creates a comfortable atmosphere and makes it ideal to work on your laptop for a couple of hours. Not to expect a good view as it faces a parking lot, yet they have a spacious outdoor seating available to relax.
