The Haunted Book Shop

This is probably going to be my go-to bookstore. The staff was PHENOMENAL and I have never been here before. Right when I walked it, I felt welcomed. They showed me all the sections of the store and I love that they just let you be while you shop in peace. They also specialize in local authors as well. I definitely want to start shopping here to support a local business.

This place is a gem! Such a cute local store. The staff left handwritten notes to highlight books they've read and liked - it felt so personalized like someone was guiding me through the options. Loved it. A must-see downtown

This is such a cute store. I love it so much. It’s so organized and clean and there’s all these amazing little details. Everywhere you look. From the amazing book in to the individual handwritten reviews of the books with suggestions everywhere it’s just probably the best bookstore in the state

This is a lovely little bookshop with a good variety of books to choose from. In addition to current best sellers, they also carry classic literature, books across different genres and interests, and they highlight local authors. Mr, Bingley, the resident cat, was very sweet and friendly and absolutely keeps the ship in tip-top shape. Staff were personable and knowledgeable. It was a great experience overall.

The Haunted Book Shop was one of the coolest and most unique stops on our trip. The shop has a cozy, inviting vibe and a great selection of books — from local authors to paranormal reads that fit perfectly with Mobile’s haunted history. I had an awesome conversation with the guy at the counter, who told me all about a secret speakeasy at Las Floriditas and even gave me the password for the night! It’s rare to find a place where the staff are that friendly and genuinely love what they do. Definitely worth stopping in if you’re downtown.

An amazing and unique bookstore experience with helpful associates! This location offers a diverse array for books, unique accoutrements, and fun beverage options. They even have a children’s section with a reading nook and a friendly shop cat!

Love bookstores. Cute shop. Friendly and knowstaff staff. An abundance of genres and titles. Every bookstore has a resident cat. Right? Like every cat, he'll come to you when he wants. Wish they had used books. Or maybe I just didn't find them. Cute kid area with a tent. Adult reading area with a rocker. Closes too early for a tourist area. Aisles are narrow and not made for two people nor wheelchair.

What a wonderful little bookstore with the best thematic selection and little nooks and crannies and super friendly staff, not to mention a resident kitty. All the things you want to find in a local independent bookstore. I adored my visit and would have liked to have spent an afternoon browsing if I could. It's the kind of bookshop with all kinds of "staff recommends" in each section of the store, from fantasy, to sci fi, to horror, and all kinds of sub genres, too. I love that because I'm so indecisive when it comes to picking out a new read.

Fun and funky little shop with new and used books organized by genre, lots of miscellaneous book related things, and friendly staff in a cozy little downtown street. We found easy parking about a block away and if we come through Mobile again, I will be back!

I visited this shop on a day off trip through Mobile, it's a wonderful shop, well laid out, the gentleman working the store was incredibly kind, polite, and helpful. The choice of books is vast and well priced. I'll certainly be coming back next time I'm passing.

Love this quaint little local bookstore! The owner and staff are super helpful and they have a great selection of books (neatly organized) in a small space. They even managed to pull off a children's "book nook." I know that they frequently have local author signings and events, and now they've pivoted to offering virtual readings and such. Bravo.

This store is a great find that has something for every reader. The clerk greeted us and explained the lay out of the store. From there, you are free to explore. Some highlights- staff showcases books in different genres with handwritten sticky notes. I am often drawn to books this way, so I enjoyed the presentation. Each genre is broken down further and we'll categorized- i.e. historical mysteries, local noir, etc. There's a writer's room. The children's area includes comfy chairs and a play tent with toys. You could easily spend hours in here. There's also an adorable cat! Prices are good for an independent book seller. Maybe a few bucks more than Amazon, but worth the price to support small business and to have the experience of interacting with the literature.

The new location is great! The staff is and always has been wonderful. I wished they had a better selection in stock, the 3 things I specifically wanted are carried by the bookstore but were out of stock. Ah, well. Anyway, the young adult section is either bigger than it was or better organized, so it's definitely the best young adult section in Mobile. I took up space in a comfortable chair and read the first three chapters of my new book while drinking a Diet Coke they sold me, so I'm a basically happy customer!

Very cool bookstore. Love the gentleman that was working in there today. He was very friendly! I love that each section has a spot for local authors. Great way to support local writers! It has an upstairs area with more books and a writers room. Before you leave, take a pin and mark where you are from on the map!

A wonderful little bookstore (The name put me off as I did not realize the name of the bookshop until after I was in there... but I realize now there was no merit to it LOL) with a large selection of books. They have plenty to browse through with their great selection of used and new books in all sorts of categories. They have a lovely kids section. The isles are wide and the atmosphere is cozy and in such an interesting building. The owner is super friendly and there to help. I was extra excited to use my Yelp 5% discount just for checking in.

This is a very unique and interesting book store. There is an upstairs area and a kids area. The staff are very friendly and helpful. They also have different events. There are historical mobile tours that leave from this book store. They do a scavenger hunt for Waldo. A variety of topics and books can be found in this store. If you are a book lover of any kind, this is a must visit. I will be returning.

What a wonderful book store! So happy we found it while traveling through Mobile for a wedding. Angela the owner is a sweetheart and I am a fan of the way she has organized the books. Each genre has a display of curated titles, including a local authors section for each genre. I'm a poet myself and went straight to the poetry section, and was delighted to find a local poets section. This is great for someone like myself who likes to discover the literary scene in different places. Sure enough I bought a book by the former Alabama poet laureate. I also love that the upstairs has a brief history of each genre laid out as a display pegboard. This is a fun and interesting way to learn and get the most out of a bookstore experience! There is even a writer's room that local writers can rent out during the week to get those pages done. What an amazing idea. The bookstore also holds workshops and local author signings. Thank you Haunted for supporting local authors and showing me a glimpse of the literary scene in Mobile. Finding this spot has made me smile!

Don't let the name fool you--this bookstore has EVERYTHING. I don't know how, but they've cracked the code on exactly how to stock a small bookstore to get maximum awesomeness per shelf inch. I bought 20 books because I needed them all. Alex and Candice were great. Put me on some great new authors and made sure I started with their best books. I wouldn't be surprised to find that they've read every tome in the place. Thinking about stopping by again on our way back home.

I've shopped here in person as well as via bookshop.org (support local bookshops over Amazon! Link provided at the end of the review) and I must speak volumes about how -helpful- the staff is. Alex, one of their booksellers, has a spotless record for recommending me things to read as well as finding books on specific topics. This is important to me as I am largely a DIY reader, and lots of DIY books suck. The staff in the Haunted Bookshop are very friendly. We enjoyed the atmosphere and tea. I was needing to work and it was hour until they closed and they told me I could work there at the bar. We found an Ian Fleming book! And there was a cat!

Fun place with nice staff! They just opened but good selection of pre read books. I write in residence and reference books for writers! Wonderful find

My date and I were waiting for a table to come available across the street at Squid Ink when we decided to kill some time in The Haunted Book Shop, and man oh man, am I happy that we did. This place was wonderful! Mr. Bingley, the adorable kitty cat, who was asleep in the window, greeted me as soon as I walked in the store (people tell me that I am a cat whisperer and it was quite charming for the little guy to give me big meows and affection right off the bat). My date perused the first floor (of three) and I got kitty lovins until the restaurant called us. We got such a good taste of welcomeness, inclusivity and overall great vibes, that we beelined for this book store when we were done with our meal. I explored all three floors and found multiple books to buy for many of my family members for future holiday gifts. Am I the only one who has family members who are difficult to buy presents for? No? Go here! I asked multiple employees to help me find nice reads pertaining to others' different interests. I have no idea about anime (no judgement, just not my thing), but the nice guy working on the third floor got some specific info about types and styles of anime my mom and sister like, and I ended up spending about $100 just on things for them. Worth it! I also found a queer-positive, explanatory, animated and light read for my 14 year old sister who doesn't know her sexual identity yet, but knows she is not necessarily straight. I love that they have a little bit of everything for everyone. My date adored Mr. Bingley so much that she bought a fridge magnet of him - which, to me, is comical but quite endearing. I highly recommend visiting this book store.

This bookstore is exactly what a bookstore should be! It is the perfect mix of old and new books with the perfect amount of quirky and eclectic. The staff was super nice and so friendly - even encouraging us to spend some time and enjoy our visit! I wish I lived closer and could go there more often but I will definitely be sure to visit anytime I'm near Mobile!

I was visiting my daughter at college in Mobile, and this is the one place she had to show me, as we both have a love of great books. We were actually there last weekend at the beginning of their Mardi Gras celebrations so the store was very busy but the owner was still very friendly and helpful with everyone! There were 2 authors there that night signing books. And if you get inspired by this beautiful city, they even have a writers room with reference books for your use, to write your next novel! They really have something for everyone!

This bookshop has always been amazing. I loved the local history they have to offer. As time passes I'm in high hopes it will be a literary book hub for book lovers and writers, especially local writers. Please support this great book store and stop in.

We stopped here on on our way to Florida from Texas and it is an absolute gem! So much thought went into every book and cranny. It has a comfy reading nook for kids, complete with a little tent, and local authors high kites throughout the store. Tons of great contemporary and classic books. Loved it!!

Best book shop in town! They have always helped me and everyone should support the local book shops!!
