"We Brits have always been good at this beef thing, but somehow, our steakhouses have always been rubbish. Hawksmoor changed that, and this, their original Spitalfields restaurant, is where it all started. You can get every cut of cow that exists, properly aged and cooked correctly, with one of the greatest sticky toffee puddings of all time for afters. It’s a polished experience that’s also pricey, but everything from the atmosphere to the service is spot on and worth the hefty price tag. "A steakhouse should, by law, have a strong caesar salad. We didn’t make the rules, our friends across the pond did. Hawksmoor’s interpretation stands up. It opts for whole, long, crunchy romaine leaves that are lightly but excellently dressed, with a pleasing hit of citrus going on. Controversially, and brilliantly, this caesar isn’t dressed with parmesan, but with Doddington cheese, a nutty British parmesan interpretation from Northumberland. "For the more passionately carnivorous, there’s Hawksmoor Spitalfields, the OG of the all-powerful steak chain. The bar downstairs is an ideal pre- or post-date drinking spot. You might not recognise it as you’ve spent the past seven days in an audio abyss of ‘what’s the Netflix password’, ‘I hate you’, and ‘that was my Twix, you bellend’. But thanks to all round meat pros, Hawksmoor, you can now enjoy a little quaint family peace with minimal effort.
