If I could give this upscale antique store more than 5 stars, I would do it. It was truly like stepping back in time. So many beautiful collectibles and decor. I was told they go to England twice a year to shop and bring back exquisite finds. I was fortunate to meet one of the owners. I hope to visit again when I come back to Charleston. Exploring George C. Birlant & Co. was like stepping back in time. Micah and I were fascinated by their collection of antiques and fine furnishings. The staff shared intriguing stories behind many pieces. Antique enthusiasts visiting Charleston will find this shop enchanting.

Walking into this exceptional antique store made me instantly know “I’m in the right place!” Meeting Andrew (the owner) only solidified my joy. He took time to chat with me and tell me how they select their magnificent and varied pieces. He also gave me references for crystal chandeliers and silver, and could not have been more kind or accommodating. True Southern Hospitality! To see his dear father (95!) still at work with his desk next to Andrew, spoke volumes about the character of the business and the owners and personnel ! . I have found the only place to go for the finest antiques anywhere!

Mattie is one of the most genuine and kind people I have ever met in my life. She and not only made my day, but made my entire trip to Charleston. I will definitely be coming back here again. There are all so friendly here and the antiques are absolutely gorgeous!

Being an antique collector with a great appreciation for finer pieces, this place is a real treasure. Don’t go in if you’re looking for a thrift store… this is a really good antique store with really good antiques. Not Goodwill. Will definitely be back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit with (2) generations of Antiques dealers. Especially seeing the paintings of Phil Slotin who studied with Lamar Dodd! A highlight of our visit to Charleston.

They appeared to have a very nice selection, particularly of antique furniture. However, we were very uninspired by the staff. Every other customer who entered was politely greeted and asked if they required any assistance, but the only time we were addressed was when a woman rudely barked at us to not damage a table, sharply saying that it was sold and they “needed to protect it.” Okay, fine. But it was... quite disproportionate, as I had lightly touched the surface of the table with one finger (which was not visibly marked as sold, uncovered, and in the middle of the store). That was enough for us, and we made our way to the exit. As we left, another customer walked in and, to our disappointment but not to our surprise, was pleasantly greeted and asked if she needed assistance. I guess that service is reserved for the 60 and up crowd? Too bad, really, we would’ve loved to go home with a beautiful antique piece.

A dazzling array of fine silver, exquisite porcelain and wondrous wood work. Prices are commensurate with quality, so some things must simply be appreciated by viewing but there are many lovely pieces for smaller price ranges like ours. My favorite store in Charleston.

George C. Birlant & Co on King Street in Charleston is a great place to find unique and quality antiques. There always seems to be something special and an item that really stands out every time I shop here. There is a wide selection of many different items that represent some of the history of Charleston. The staff here is very helpful and will do their best to make sure that you have all of your questions answered and you have a pleasant shopping experience. There are some good finds here.

On a recent trip to Charleston I visited Geo. C. Birlant & Co. for the first time, having admired their window displays in the past. Not only do they have a lovely selection of top-quality items, they offer something else that is almost in the category of antiquities -- good, old customer service at the 5-star level. They put a piece of furniture on hold for me until I could return home to Colorado to check measurements and communicated frequently about shipping costs and details, never with any pressure. The piece to which I refer was a declared reproduction -- "bench made" in the UK -- that was stunning! They often commission reproductions to accompany their regular shipments from England. I would highly recommend them!

For a Volunteer Appreciation BBQ we wanted to honor our awesome long-term Volunteer Coordinator and her equally awesome husband with a Charleston Bench and plaque. I, unfortunately, ordered the bench & plaque on a tight timeframe, so let them know we could get it after the fact, but would really appreciate it if they could mount it on the bench and we got it on time. Everyone I dealt with at Birlant's was wonderful!! And we received the bench with plaque in time for the presentation. Thank you Birlant.

While it's not my decor of choice, I do love strolling through antique stores. And the first time I walked into the Fan & Stoves Antique Mall in Jacksonville (http://www.yelp.com/biz/fans-and-stoves-antique-mall-jacksonville?hrid=1R9jfsefZ49b--SVhtGGwg), this is more along the line of what I was expecting. This shop has beautiful pieces and extravagant chandeliers. One of the gentleman was actually reconstructing a chandelier in the front window while we were there. It liked IKEA instructions on crack; AKA my worst nightmare. I've always read the key to personalizing a room is to always have one piece that stands out from the rest. Like one expensive piece among a affordable set of furniture. Or one antique piece in a modern room. This shop would definitely help anyone accomplish that.

Buyer beware. We are not experts in this area and if you are similar, I'd warn you off this shop. We bought a cocktail shaker here and were led to believe it was a mid-century classic piece (though in their defense we never asked directly). At home, we removed the strategically-placed price tag to find the name of a present-day manufacturer. We discovered that the piece is widely available for half the price, and is in fact a replica of the classic whimsical design. I'm glad we did not purchase anything more expensive or I'd really feel the fool. That said, there are really beautiful items in this store, and we enjoyed looking around. I'd only advise you to do your homework beforehand, and remember - as we forgot - that their game is to make money off of your ignorance.
