We did the self guided morning tour. Gorgeous setting and scenery. Our tour guide was Kemo. We were really impressed with all his knowledge and he made the trip up to the top very entertaining. He took some great pictures for us and recommended places to eat. Such a great adventure!! We highly recommend Bike Maui!

We absolutely loved our experience with Haleakala Sunrise Ecotours. The sunrise was truly breathtaking and something we will never forget. Our tour guide Eddie was amazing and hilarious, he made the early morning so much fun and kept the energy up the whole time. He even took the time to show us an incredible spot for photos, which we really appreciated. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Maui. Just a heads up it’s an early one, most pickups start around 2am, but it is 100 percent worth it.

It was an extremely long day with guides that droned on and on with lame jokes and long, long stories; some of which were true and others with extreme embellishment or just made up. You had to decide which were which. While the bike ride down should have been straight forward and fast; the long safety talks, numerous stops for various reasons, (including photo ops, talks about Hawaii, etc, etc,) added several, long, boring hours to an already long day. Forget the guided bike tour. If you have had any reasonable biking experience at all, you do not need to waste 3 - 4 extra hours or the extra cash, with self absorbed, out of shape, egomaniacs, that like to hear themselves talk. Here is the basic information required to stay safe I learned from hour plus of separate safety talks and doing it. Use the front brake sparingly, never put your feet down to aid stopping, keep your weight back, stay to the right, do not go too fast in the hairpin curves, slow down for the cattle guard on the road, avoid the cow patties/debris in the road and especially watch out for idiot tourists coming across the double yellow lines in their mustang convertibles! What could have easily been a 3 - 4 hour experience turns into 9 hours of stop and go; mostly with a lot of guide yapping… We arrived at the bike shop meet spot at 3:25 AM…. We’re outfitted with wind suits, helmets and a safety video and talk. Arrived at the summit of Haleakalā around 6:15 AM. Sunrise was amazing at 6:37 AM, did not start descent until almost an hour later… AND did not get back to the shop until after 12:30 PM!!! The ride actually starts down another -3k’ in the ranch. You do not need to worry about the cold too much as it is not the summit. Now the good stuff. The summit sunrise or sunsets are incredible experiences. The people we met in our group were amazing and a lot of fun. The guides do take some creative and fun photos. That is why I did not rate lower, as they do not overcome the boring hours of torturous talking…. Someone needs to remind them that silence is golden! We did witness a bad accident when an inexperienced rider freaked out after crossing the cattle guard going a little too fast for their level. The handle bars started shaking so they forgot the training and hit the front brakes too hard. Poor thing went over the handle bars. Thank God, was not hurt, but was a little in shock and mostly really embarrassed… Skip this guided tour if you value your Maui time for the beach and all the other fun activities you could trade for the hours you will waste on this tour… PS. We are not unkind people, so we tipped generously for the services that were rendered. The wind suit and bus rides were nice. The Bike Team were polite and helpful when needed…

We had a great time. Our guide Kimo took great care of us. He made sure everyone was comfortable and safe operating the bikes, pointed out places of interest and best places to stop for a bite on the way down and took some awesome group shots of each party.

The bike tour was well organized with professional, safety focused guides. Ed and Drew were amazing! They had great, funny commentary throughout the tour and really helped make the experience enjoyable. The ride itself is intense and not for everyone, but the team clearly knew what they were doing and ran a solid tour. It was a highlight of our honeymoon!

I would definitely recommend this tour group. Our guide Kimo was fantastic and made us feel so connected to the community. He told us stories about his growing up on the island and his connections to the land and the community. I enjoyed the entire trip… it’s an early day.. up at 2 am to make the 3:20 am meet up.. the drive up to Haleakala and standing on a cold rim of a volcano with anticipation of the sunrise. It was magical! The bike ride down was easy due to the quality of the bikes and the care Kimo took to tell us the rules of safety and tips to ensure we had a safe and memorable experience. So worth it. And hang out in Makawao for a bit and visit expresso mafia for the lattes and stop by Kett Pottery for some beauty ceramics ❤️

Kimo was an excellent guide! Knowledgeable and very funny and entertaining. The ride itself is spectacular. Safety is clearly a high priority and they use premium bikes with excellent brakes.

The self-guided tour was amazing and well worth the effort of getting up early and up Haleakalā. Dan was our tour guide and he did an awesome job sharing information about the land and ecosystem. Can’t recommend this tour enough!

Haleakala sunrise and bike ride down the mountain is a must do! Bike Maui took care of the accommodations and really put safety first. With initial reluctance, they out my concerns at ease. The sunrise was beautiful. Word of caution...layer up. It was so cold at 55 degrees. After the beautiful sunset, Bike Maui drove us a part of the way down the mountain to start our self guided bike ride. The first 7 miles, they had the leader car follow us.:.that was reassuring. The last 7 miles, they gave us very good instructions to bike the rest of the way to a little town where one could hang out a bit or the option we chose was to bike directly back to the shop. We left our personal belongings in the leader van. Got caught in a downpour biking back to the shop. We beat the van back and they were so kind to accommodate and drive our belongings back to the shop so we could head home. This was out of their way given the fact that they were at the little town waiting for the other bikers. So appreciate if the staff and their safety first This a a must do when in Maui. Don't just ride up to the summit and drive back home. The views were spectacular. It's not every day you can bike down a mountain and the clouds are right at the same level as you!

We did the sunrise summit tour and bike down. First shuttle picked us up on time from our accommodations and dropped us off at the main location in Hailu. From there we were set up with helmets and gear for biking and listened to safety info. Definitely grab the pants and jackets that they offer, better to have them than not. Helmets were full over the head with mouth coverings. We wore our sunglasses underneath. I wish I had brought a cross body bag or similar to carry phones. There were plenty of opportunities to grab items out of the van on the bike ride down though! Our driver / tour guide Edie was wonderful. Very knowledgeable and honest about making sure we had a safe trip. The bike ride down was awesome. Lots of stops for pictures and opportunities to learn about the island. Our guide drew was also very knowledgeable and told us all the great food spots when we stopped in Makawao. Our group had about 12 riders and a large variety of abilities / speeds but i felt that everyone could go the pace they preferred which was great!

Booked a trip with them, had flights and a rental car set up, only for them the cancel our reservation the day before. They didn't care we had everything else booked and offered no other options besides different days which would not work.

Add this to your list now! 5 stars isn't enough. Our guide Kimo was the best in the business. Kept us fully engaged, safe, and he had great stories and jokes. Kimo was part of why this tour was so great. The crater at sunrise was crazy! The rolling hills were a great view while soaring down the mountain. Mahalo Bike Maui team!

Very fun trip! We did the self-guided bike tour which I highly recommend if you know how to ride a bike. Personally, I think the guided tour is more dangerous because you're biking around people who may have no idea what they're doing. Pack warm clothes. They give you a windbreaker jacket and pants but you need to bring at least a sweatshirt + hay + gloves because it's COLD at the top. You'll shed layers as you go down. After sunrise, you will take the bus partially down the mountain then start biking the first leg. You then get back on the bus, drive past the rich people who had biking outlawed, then ride some more. This unfortunately cuts at least 1/3 out of what the trip used to be, which stinks. Regardless it's still a super fun experience. Eddie Buddy, our guide, was awesome and had great fun facts and stories during our trip. Be sure to stop in the cookie shop in the town you pass through.

We have the best experience on the sunset tour! Javier was great and did wonderful driving us up. I didn't get sick once. We really enjoyed the facts and information throughout the tour and felt very safe on the biking part! Would recommend!!

When we go on vacation, my wife and I usually look for biking tours of the area we're visiting because we like to be active and it's usually a great way to explore an area in more depth than by car or on foot. The sunrise tour of Haleakala quickly rose to the top for us even though it requires a $700 prepayment and getting up at 2:30am for the hotel pick up. The day before the tour we rearranged our schedule, forgoing other fun activities, to make sure we could get to bed super early ahead of the ride. Come morning we're groggy but ready to go at 3am... time ticks by and no sign of the driver, no call or email from the company. I proceed to call their number, no one answers. I email them, no reply. COMPLETELY GHOSTED. Having gotten up pre-dawn on vacation and PREPAID, I would expect a good business would be pro-active, apologize, and try to make things right. Not this company. No calls, no emails, no refunds. I called them again in the afternoon the day of my scheduled tour. Again no answer. I left a message and gave them the rest of the day to call me back before resorting to posting this review. They clearly don't care, so I'm now contacting my bank to dispute their $700 charge as a fraudulent SCAM.

I did the guided bike tour. Javier was our bus driver. He was amazing! Gave us history of the island while we made our way up. It's very early though, so many people were sleeping. On the way up, he did say we have a 50/50 chance of actually seeing the sun because it's winter time, and generally much more cloudy than in summer. Well, we hit the jackpot since it's clear. The guided bike ride was really great. The bus group is split into 3 smaller groups for the ride. Our guide helped us sort ourselves out with fast paced riders in the front and slower in the back. There were many stopping points for the group to meet up. At first, we would stop frequently to sort out the line up. And after that, we stopped less frequently. Our guide gave us culture lessons of Hawaii, and really amazing jokes when we stopped. He also told us the route ahead and the best approach for different riding styles. The bikes themselves were well maintained. They gave a quick lesson on where the gears and brakes are on the bike before you set out. And the ride started with a quick "demo" of walking the bike up an about 25 feet and riding down to the van to get familiar and to make sure the size is correct. This was so much fun! If you are proficient on a bike, it is a unique and exhilarating experience.

This was my husband's favorite part of the whole trip! Unfortunately I feel but would still highly recommend to anyone confident on a bike. Larry was the greatest! Took care of me after the fall and chatted with me in the van the rest of the tour. Still a wonderful experience.

Everything was great! Eddie has a lot of enthusiasm for his job and it's readily apparent that he loves what he is doing! We loved the jokes, the stories and the experience! He is a great tour guide but also seems like a warm and caring human being. Russell was our bike guide. I was initially terrified but he walked me through the process step by step. He was kind, patient and helped to make the experience memorable. Wonderful employees and a unforgettable experience@

This is my second time going down Haleakala on a bike and this was even better than the first. Do your research, and you'll end up picking this company. The first time was almost 20 years ago, on a guided bike tour, which starts with a leader on a bike in the front, and a guide van on the back to keep the cars away. We would stop to take pictures (as a group) at various lookout points, or we would move to the side (as a group) to let other cars pass by. This is a good option for people who aren't really comfortable riding on roads with cars, or for people who might get lost. This option is also great since there are lots of photographers around to take pictures of you and your friends. Well, I didn't have a choice this time because the only 2 seats left on the day I wanted to go last week was on the SELF-GUIDED EXPRESS TOUR. The self guided tour takes you up in a van/bus and drops you off at 6,500ft (skipping the tour of the summit) and off you go, down the volcano. I was a little apprehensive because it truly is self-guided; you need to know when to turn and how to get back, all by yourself. BEST TOUR GUIDE AWARD goes to: Kimo Rice, our fabulous tour guide/driver/comedian. He seriously is the BEST. He made sure we saw all the landmarks for the turns we were going to have to navigate, telling us "if you see this, you're going the wrong way, go back" and making us repeat what to do/how to get back. Not only did he make sure we knew how to get back, but he gave a little history about all kinds of things, I don't want to ruin it for you, but his stories and background about the land/area etc is entertaining and educational at the same time...he definitely has a lot of great stories. I live in Hawaii and still learned a lot on our drive up Haleakala. Don't let this man go, he is seriously the reason I will come back and do this again the next time we are on Maui. And Kimo if you're reading this, next time you're on Oahu, let us know!! THE BIKES: the bikes had multiple gears, and disc pad brakes, so I never worried about slowing down, or shifting gears to take the uphills. 97% of the ride is downhill, but there are a few uphills, and it was nice to have a multi-gear bike. BTW, other companies use cruiser (1 gear) bikes, so be careful where you spend your money. This company has great bikes. THE GEAR: if you don't have a jacket, they have rain jackets, fleece vests, backpacks, etc that you can borrow for your ride. The top starts out very cold, especially when you pick up speed going downhill. THE HELMETS: they use motorcycle helmets. If you've never used one, you can't hear anything, so you can't hear the cars very well and it's hard to hear each other. Make sure you have your hand signals with each other to communicate. The roads are paved very well and clearly marked the entire trip. THE SELF GUIDED EXPRESS TOUR was actually perfect for us. We didn't have to wake up so early for the sunrise (meeting time was 9:30am), we didn't have to waste time up at the summit (10,000 feet) - we did that part on our own on a different day. I did the ride down with my 17yr old son, and it was actually better for us that we were on our own, as my son wanted to go down pretty fast. He does ride on the road quite a bit, but this was his first time going down a volcano. If we were in a group and had to go at the groups pace, he wouldn't have had as much fun. I did bring our own handle bar mirrors for each side, and front and back flashing lights for better visibility. SAFETY FIRST: This company really does go the extra mile. In addition to the ridiculous motorcycle helmets (which I'm actually glad we had), they hired a person to sit on the road checking us in one by one on the final stretch right before the sharp turns. Mary sits on the side of the road from 10am til the last person comes rolling down the hill to 1) check us off (to make sure we made it!) and 2) to tell us we better SLOW DOWN on the upcoming turns. I always follow my son when we ride on the road, but she insisted that I go first for the last part, because of the tricky turns. I'm glad she did, so I would die first if I took the turn too fast, just kidding. I never felt like we were in danger, but we both have ridden on the road before so we knew what to sort of expect with the cars etc. LUNCH: we stopped in Makawao to grab some unique things like the Maui Cookie lady cookies, and the acai bowl with guava butter from the store across that. We headed back and bought more food from Haiku from the food trucks in the same lot as Haleakala Bike. There's also Colleen's restaurant which has to-go items. BRING: your own water bottle, snack, chapstick, sunscreen, sunglasses, shoes and socks, and a good nights rest. It will be a lot of fun!

Well-organized and experienced. Downgrade on stars is purely for comment #6 1) They're not kidding to have winter clothing for the summit sunrise segment. 2) Bring a breakfast snack or maybe even a hot chocolate 3) If you're coming from Wailea, you'll be in the van awhile picking up other guests along the way 4) The bike portion is pure "coasting" - almost no pedaling at all 5) The guides are knowledgeable and chatty, very friendly. 6) The cancellation policy is not flexible. My friend injured herself swimming the day before. The company required a local doctors note. However, when we went to an urgent care to get a note, the RN wanted $200. That didn't make sense, so we were out of luck. Doing the ride solo was still fun, but not what I would have chosen.

We had a fun and informative tour guide who was punctual and who was an excellent driver.

Definitely an experience to remember. I was dreading the bus ride up as I get motion sickness, but our driver Corey made it an incredibly smooth and fun and informative ride. Watching the sunrise was very special. Corey got us there before almost any other tour. It was indeed very cold and windy - bring your winter gear even though it seems weird as you will be standing still for about an hour and will need to conserve your heat. It's really special to just take the time to watch the sun rise over the other worldly crater. After the sunrise you get transferred to the bike portion. We did the guided tour because of reading on here how dangerous it was and how many cars there were. I would definitely recommend that guided tour to people who are infrequent cyclists but my spouse and I are fairly experienced cyclists and found it too slow paced and would rather have been going at our own pace down the volcano. There are definitely far more cars and many more (albeit up and down) hills during rush hour Seattle. That said the equipment was high quality and well maintained and we had to pedal about 15 minutes total I would say - the Disney land version of a bike ride. Minus one star because for the price you pay for this tour some water bottles or granola bars would be nice.

We had a sunrise tour with a bike ride down the volcano. Our pickup time was scheduled for 1:45am we were waiting from 1:30am. No one came to pick us up at 1:45am. No one came at 2am. No one came at 3am. After over 10 calls during that time with no answer. I finally get a hold of the driver who said I wasn't on the list. The following morning I called again spoke to multiple people who stated they would look into what happened. No one called me back. Now it's the following day. I sent multiple emails and asked to speak to the manager/owner Louis. Again another full day and nothing. They took over $1000 from me and I have nothing to show for it and now they are giving me the run around when Im just trying to get my money back.

We got to see a beautiful sunrise that morning. Cory was an awesome driver/ guide. He was very informative and made the drive up to Haleakala , enjoyable. We didn't need to use the jackets and pants that they offered in their shop. The breakfast/ lunch restaurant in Paia was very tasty. I would reccommend them to family and friends when they go to Maui to watch the sunrise.

We loved our entire day with this excursion. The bus tour/ride up was perfect for the early morning. Everything was quick at the start and we got on our way right away. The sunrise was spectacular, and instructions for the ride were easy. We did self-guided and it was perfect. Nobody rushes you, and the break at the mid-ride was a welcome break because we were able to then take off the wind breaker provided layer and finish the ride in our own shorts and light sweatshirts. We did the recommended stops for breakfast and coffee, and it made the whole morning just as we wanted. Thanks for the memories my family built biking Haleakalā!

Loved this experience, and our guide Dan was very knowledgeable. Seeing the sunrise was truly spectacular and the bike ride was unique and fun.

We had so much fun with this tour. Our driver and tour guide Marlin was so funny and knowledgeable. I get super duper car sick so I took Bonin 1 hour before we even left our hotel. Glad I did! The ride up and down the volcano is super winding and in the dark going up. He did a great job with putting the AC on full blast which helped a lot! We got to the top of the Volcano and let me tell you....... It was cold. Please layer and dress really really really warm. Like winter clothes warm. The sunrise was absolutely stunning. We did the bike tour going back down and it was so much fun. The bikes are pro quality and felt super safe going down. The switch backs weren't bad at all either. Just take your time going down the hill. Overall one of the best experience we had.

Great tour! The guides (Russel, Larry, Mike, and Cory) were incredibly knowledgeable about Maui, the floral and fauna and their care of the iisland was evident the entire trip. Highly recommend!

We recently did the Haleakala Sunset/stargazing. We had the best time. Lots of beautiful breathtaking view. Our guide Michael was a wealth of information and we had so much fun with him. Would take this tour again in a heartbeat cause what better place to see the sun go down and stars shine.

We (son & wife) did the Guided Sunrise Tour. WE had a great support team that took care of us! Marlin, Drew, and Larry all played a valuable part in giving us great and safe experiences. I did the tour about 10-years ago and the current restrictions does take a little off the tour .... But I would do in again with Cruiser Phil's if we had friends that had not been. Highly recommend you dress in multiple layers with a hat and gloves! It was a great sunrise - but cold and very windy.

while the tour was great, the city of kula has banned biking through the town. It was not as much fun as it could be. Not worth the money simply because you have to get off your bike and lose out of 7 miles of bike riding. I would spend my money elsewhere.

If you have a car and want to explore,this is the place . Their bike mechanic set us up on our bikes and took his time . They sent us off with a bike rack , tools for road side repairs , first aid kit and a backpack. The daily rental fee was amazing. We will definitely be back . Loved it !!!

The trip was amazing. We had a blast. Did the sunrise trip and so breathtaking. Our driver was great and very nice to talk with. I would very much recommend this company for this sunrise bike trip.

After our fourth trip to Maui we finally made it to see the Haleakala sunrise and no question it was worth the wait! Haleakala Bike Company is a well oiled machine. The bus ride to the top was informative and I loved all the corny jokes. We were excited but nervous about the bike ride down but everyone made us feel safe and was very patient. Gary did an amazing job-thank you! Highly recommend

An amazing experience. Yes, you will wake up early but it's worth it! Definitely have layers as it's freezing at the top even with no wind. You can leave your layers in the van & pick it up when you check out. Loved stoping in town on the way down for brunch, coffee and some amazing convos with locals. Take the first half slow & take pictures! Even though you're in the road, you feel safe. Everyone looks for bikers. It's so friendly. The tour guide/driver Javier was awesome too! Would highly recommend.

We took the tour with the bus trip to the top of Haleakala. I'm embarrassed as I can't remember the guides name, but he was from Argentina. We arrived at their location a few minutes before 3:00 am and selected our rain gear (in case we needed it), backpack (provided) and helmet for the bike ride down. We arrived at the top of the mountain by 5:30 am-ish and had time to get acclimated to the darkness. The sky was magnificent! So many stars and a clear moon! We had amazing weather to watch the sunrise! Dress warm! On our way to meet the bike guide, he stopped to take our photos and laid down on the ground to take these amazing shots! We rode bikes down the mountain but you start around 6500 elevation - not at the top of the mountain. It was a safe wonderful, guided tour and Russell was extremely helpful and safety was his number 1 priority. We were all in our 60's and made it down with no mishaps! We stopped for photos, for which he had great pose suggestions, as well as breakfast. Highly recommend this tour! Definitely 5 stars!

The sunrise and views overlooking Maui were absolutely stunning but if I had to do it again I would save the money, rent bikes and pay $30 for a park pass. We have family on island so that is definitely easier said than done if you are just visiting briefly. Be prepared for only 20-30 mins of biking for an 8 hour day. You do get to stop in a little town half way down but by that time we were ready to get back. The tour guide was extremely salty about the Maui County and liked to share his point of view on many MANY things. Lots of talking and time killing waiting for the guided tour to catch up. Dress crazy warm for the top and if you think you are wearing enough you probably aren't. It was absolutely freezing and I had a neck warmer, hand warmers, ear warmers, gloves, leggings, waterproof pants, long sleeve, hoodie, jacket. The winds were also whipping hard!

Wow! What an amazing trip! We decided to skip the sunrise and do a morning self guided tour instead. Lucky for us we ended up with our guide, Kimo. He made our trip up the mountain amazing. He made us laugh from the second we got there till the moment we left. He was so knowledgeable about the land and the island, it blew our expectations out of the water. Kimo went above and beyond for our group. What we thought was just going to be another day on our vacation, turned out to be one of our favorites. Amazing experience from start to finish with this company. Would definitely recommend booking with them. P.s. KIMO DESERVES A RAISE

this is a MUST DO experience for anyone coming to Maui! And this is a must do experience with THIS company! My wife and I had such an amazing time and learned so much about the culture and history of the island. Our tour guide, EDDY BUDDY, was phenomenal! He was hilarious, and kept us entertained the entire tour. He was an amazing driver, and made us feel very safe the whole time. He's also an amazing photographer and gave us some awesome ideas to do for some great pics! Highlights about the tour: The tour bus is extremely comfortable. Our tour included breakfast which was at a beautiful location, and there were many options we could choose from! I had the country breakfast, which included eggs, bacon, toast and hot cocoa. The tour also provided us with some parkas to wear when we got to the summit! NOTE: Pack warm clothes because it gets really really cold up there! Overall, this experience is well worth it! I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to experience the beauty of nature, and experience something they'll never forget. Thank you Haleakala Bike Company for putting this together, and thank you EDDY BUDDY for being the greatest tour guide of all time!

My wife and I did this as an excursion for our Hawaiian Island cruise on the Pride of America. Since we were at port overnight in Maui, we were able to experience the sunrise on our second day here. Bike Maui picked us up on their shuttle near the port and took us to their location and then up the mountain. It was a great experience to see the sunrise and then bike down. Our guide was not just anybody but it was Eddie Buddy!! He and all of his "dad" jokes were great. He really added to the experience by bring humor, personality, and fun to the adventure. My wife was scared of the biking part, as she had not ridden a bike in over a decade, but the expression "it's like riding a bike" is true for a reason. It took no-time at all for her to get comfortable. The views of the sunrise and down the mountain, plus the experience riding down the mountain were something we will never forget and so worth the 1:30 AM wakeup call. Our only improvement opportunity is that there felt like a lot of wasted time post-sunrise. Our trip time went over and there was multiple times where we were sitting around waiting for something or just killing time. Given that we were up early and couldn't wait to get back for a nap, it made this "delays" feel extra long and not the best. But that was minor in the overall experience.

We went on the Guided Morning Tour with Cruiser Phil's of Haleakala Bike Company. Everything about it exceeded my expectations. I wasn't expecting such an in-depth and interesting tour on our drive up to the top of Haleakala as we received. Our guide, Kimo, was fantastic. He grew up on Maui and has an extensive understanding of the history, culture and plant life of the island and specifically around Haleakala. In addition, he was very engaging and has a great sense of humor. The views from the summit or the crater and the surrounding vistas were spectacular. We were on the guided tour, and our guide during the bike tour gave excellent safety instruction before and during the ride. The ride down was exhilarating. Even though bikes are no longer allowed on the middle section and you have to ride in the van through that part, it was well worth it! I would highly recommend this company!

This was such a great experience! The shuttle was on-time, we got to see an amazing sunrise at the summit, and the bike ride was incredible! Definitely my favorite day on Maui! The summit can be cold and windy so definitely bring more clothes and a beanie/ear warmers! Eddie, our bus driver, was so amazing, knowledgeable, and funny! Couldn't ask for a better driver who made a very early morning bus ride entertaining and made sure we all were safe during the bike ride. Highly recommend booking for an incredible experience!

So fun! We were with Dru and Dan, who were knowledgeable and very fun for the Sunrise Summit Tour with the guided bike ride.

Book the self-guided bike tour if you love sunrises above the clouds and biking downhill at your own pace! What is this? It's a group tour to see the sunrise from the top of Haleakala (a dormant volcano), followed by a 23 mile self guided bike ride downhill from Haleakala to the town of Haiku. Haleakala has limited sunrise reservations that sell out in seconds so this is a great way to get to view it if you're not tight on a budget. Downside is that you need to check-in at ~3am so that the staff has time to prep you (gear fitting, restroom stop, bike safety talk) as well as to drive you from their check-in location in Haiku to the top of Haleakala. The early check-in time is not bad at all if you're jet-lagged from NYC; therefore it's best to book this as early in your trip as possible (we did ours on the first full day of our trip). Highly recommend stopping by Kula Lodge on your way down for outdoor seating - they have a beautiful seating setup with a garden bordering the tables. The bikes are extremely safe and any beginner biker could easily do this 23 mile bike ride (in my opinion!). At the time that I booked this activity, they had free cancellation up to 48 hours prior to the activity date; definitely keep an eye on the weather in the days before your cancellation deadline to make sure you won't be biking in the rain! For those worried about getting carsick: I am extremely prone to getting carsick but our guide Chris was an INCREDIBLE driver, and it was never an issue.

In planning activities for our maui trip, my wife and I asked our boys (early college age) what they were interested in seeing and doing. My oldest said the sunrise bike tour was a "must do." As I was researching different sunrise bike companies, I came across this one. My oldest couldn't remember the name of the company but vividly remembered the experience. I texted my brother-in-law asking what company they used and he replied with the link to this very company that was my number one choice as well. This sealed the deal, we were booking the sunrise, self-guided bike ride with Haleakala Bike Company (aka Bike Maui). Unfortunately, the tour guide (yes, I said it was self-guided but there is a critical role of the guide for the trip) for the date we had selected became ill. They called us the day before our ride, apologized and explained the situation and offered a reschedule or refund. Being a must do for my boys, I thanked them for calling us and they worked with our schedule to accommodate us. We arrived at the bike company HQ at 2:40am. Between the email confirmation, my conversation with them in the reschedule, and the information on the website, we felt very prepared. I did wear a beanie, a long sleeve cold gear shirt and a windbreaker along with my shorts for the sunrise (you may need a bit more clothing even it doesn't rain and some may need less but it does get a little chilly). Do bring some water and any light snacks you might want. Not a lot is needed. You'll thank me later. We met our tour guide, Corey at HQ. We received our safety briefing and introduction to the bikes we would be using. We were fitted for helmets and if wanted, rain gear and a backpack. We loaded onto the van and we were on our way. As we drove the long, windy road Corey provided with specific directions and safety instructions for our trip. He also included some Maui history, nature facts and multiple dad jokes along they way. We stopped within the cattle field area which there were no ambient lights so we could see the clearest, most vivid night sky one would ever see. We could see the stars and the milky way with extraordinary clarity. He took us to the top with ample time and we got situated in a spot that we wanted to watch the sunrise. I posted one photo of part of the sunrise but this is something that you must experience for yourself. Once the sun had risen into the sky, we proceeded back to our van and Corey took us down the road to an alternate view location of the crater (also in photo). Again the view was nothing short of spectacular. Corey provided some tips for hiking the crater in case you wanted to come back later or another day. After our group photo, we once again loaded into our van and Corey took us just outside the National Park gate so we could load onto our bikes. We met Nate, the bike mechanic with the trailer full of bikes. The bikes were in amazing shape for being rentals and many uses. I have been mountain biking for many years, roads, on and off trail and for this trip, these bikes more than met expectations and were very well-suited for the experience. After another safety briefing (see the focus of this company? Safety and enjoyment go hand-in-hand with also respecting the land and other people) we were set for our ride. Due to some political issues which I will not discuss here, the tour has been modified from one continuous ride down the mountain to two halves (really thirds but technically not). The first ride is downhill with about a couple hundred yards of a very slight uphill through 29 incredible switchbacks on the road. Yes, you share the road with cars but you are traveling close to or just above the speed limit of 25mph for most of this switchback ride. You can go slower but why would you? Stay in control of your bike and you will have an awe inspiring experience. Corey drives down the mountain first to our meeting point and Nate brought up the rear in case any assistance was needed. Once at the predesignated meeting point, they loaded our bikes in the trailer again to ride the switchbacks again! Once we completed the switchbacks a second time, they loaded our bikes up and we loaded back into the van. Corey provided more dad jokes, some more history (he genuinely cares about Maui and protecting the land) and we arrived at our next location to load up on our bikes and make the second half of our ride (but really our third). This ride was through small communities with slightly more pedaling, but again not too much. Again, Corey went ahead and Nate followed behind after the last rider. We biked back into HQ where more staff of the bike company were there to greet us, receive our bikes and gear, and thank us for our business. In short, if you want to see the sunrise at the top of Haleakala and enjoy a downhill bike ride with a company that focuses on fun and safety, Haleakala Bike Company is the experience you want and will never forget!

We were just in Maui for spring break and the Haleakala sunset tour was one of the highlights of our trip. The view from the top was a one of a kind breathtaking sight. Getting to see the sunset over the clouds from 3000ft above the cloud level was something truly spectacular. We were staying in Wailea, so the drive was 2 hours up and 2 hours down. This would normally be somewhat of a bore, but our tour guide Coach was honestly the best part of the entire trip. Coach told the most amazing and captivating stories about Hawaiian history, the natural landscape, and his personal life for the entirety of the drive both ways. These stories had my group completely captivated. Some were very informative, some very heartfelt, and some downright hilarious. I'm not sure how often Coach does the tours, but if you are going to take a tour make sure to ask if Coach is available. He is just an absolutely amazing person and tour guide and embodies the Aloha spirit in every way. He even offered to give us a free surfing lesson if we visited him in Hana where he lived (which we unfortunately did not have time for this trip). I would reccomend Haleakala eco tours (Haleakala bike company's non biking counterpart) to anybody who is visiting Maui. It was an amazing evening that none of us will ever forget.

What an amazing way to start a maui vacation! Sunrise on the Haleakala Volcano is so beautiful and breathtaking. What is better than that? A self guided Bike Maui tour with Billy. We love his history lesson along the tour and his silly jokes. His singing when the sun rises brings an energy that warms your soul. Then you bike down the volcano at your own pace stopping to take as many pictures as you like and even stop for breakfast along the way. This was our second time on this adventure. It is so much fun. We never felt unsafe. We stopped to smell the eucalyptus too. Such a beautiful bike ride even through town. I would highly recommend. And if you do go, recommend Billy. He will make sure you are safe and he lives to tell you about his Hawaiian culture.

We did the Guided 8am Bike Tour and had a great time. Thank you Kimo, Nate, Ethan and Tim! Loaded into Kimos van & Left Rental office about 830 and a 90 minute drive to Summit. I am prone to carsickness so Kimo made sure I sat up front, and I felt fine. Had big windows and never felt queesy. Kimo as funny and informative. I'd appreciate a bit more honest about the history of Hawaii (slavery, occupation, stealing)..so we did pull guides aside to ask and they were happy to inform us. I just wish our whole tour heard the truth. Top of Summit is spectacular, and Kimo helped us get awesome pics. Guided Bike ride has benefit of a Lead Biker and Following Van to allow us peace of mind to ride in the middle of the road. Cons are that we did have to go as slow as the person in the lead and we had some timid riders.. also, the last 5 miles there is NO bike lane, but with the Lead & Van it feels safe, just slightly embarrassing that were a nusance to locals.

I was extremely excited for this tour but incredibly disappointed. We woke up at 2:00 AM to drive to the meet-up location. It was raining. We loaded into the vans in the rain and drove 90+ minutes through the rain up the volcano. At the top of the volcano, there was an incredibly dense fog, whipping wind and rain, and a sunrise that was 0% visible because of the rain clouds. We loaded back up into the vans to drive out of the National Park boundary before starting the 90 minute bike ride down the mountain through the rain. I contacted Bike Maui and Viator requesting a refund, credit, and/or rain check. Each group said they were unable to give a refund, passing responsibility off to the other group. On the day of the tour, Bike Maui did not offer any guests the option for a rain check, despite that specifically being in their cancellation policy. The one moderately positive part of the day was our van driver, Eddie, who told good stories on the drive up the volcano. Be careful before spending this huge amount of money when you can simply drive up in your rental car and pay the $30 park entrance fee.

Mark H. surprised me with a mountain-biking excursion down a volcano - how cool is this?! We took the trip up in the bus with Kimo, who entertained us with fun stories from his childhood as we meandered our way up the windy road. Although the crater ended up being completely socked in with fog, we still enjoyed seeing the top before jumping on bikes and heading downhill. We selected the self-guided version where Kimo told us some directions (left-right-left? or something? no, that's not right...) and we took off riding. If you're the type that likes to stop on road trips and explore parks or grab a cup of coffee, I'd highly recommend the self-guided version since you can take your time and eat some poke in the small city or (and) grab some goat cheese and crackers at the marketplace you pass on the way down. We were the first ones to take off (the group left after us) and the last to arrive, and we definitely weren't the slowest bikers. This trip was the perfect amount of adventure, exploring and exercise. I'm not an adrenaline junky, but I had an absolute blast.

Bike Maui- This is who you want to book your bike tour with. The best bikes for the job. We had a 9:30am self guided bike tour and it met our expectations and then some. Amazing first time experience. Bring waters and snacks. They provide you with a helmet, jacket, vest and backpack to use during your trip if you didn't bring one. I grabbed a jacket just in case but the weather was perfect so I didn't end up using it, but the backpacks came in handy. Our tour guide Kimo was the best. He knows a lot of the Hawaiian history, he's a jokester, provided us snacks from his home (delicious guavas, thanks!), took amazing pictures of us with views and made the ride up the mountain very smooth. Thank you all from Bike Maui for this amazing experience. See you next time!

Our sunrise at Haleakala and guided bike tour was AMAZING! I was nervous about the bike ride but Russell, our guide, was so good - he knew just what to do to make sure I felt safe and comfortable. The guides knew just the right views to stop for, they were funny and fun, we got amazing photos and had an unforgettable adventure. Bring warm clothes for sunrise, but you will shed layers as you ride down. This is the company to go with! A

One of the best things that we did while we were in Maui! Sunrise was breathtaking, come prepared for it to be a little chill. Our guide was funny and answered every question we had! I would do the bike part over and over if I could!

The hubs and I tried the 22mile bike ride down the volcano. It was one of the BEST, UNFORGETTABLE moments of our week in Maui. I was so nervous the night before that I probably woke up 4 times that night. I'm not an avid bike rider at all and probably only rode my bike once or twice in the last 10 years. Billy was our guide and he talked us through all the steps and guided us up to the starting point just by the entrance of the national park to the volcano. He was absolutely wonderful & his guidance/instructions & humor made me more relaxed and excited about the ride. The whole bike ride took us probably 2.5 hours and it was absolutely incredible. There were parts of the ride that were scary near the top of the volcano but the breaks on the bikes are so strong, you have full control of the bicycle. Since your going down hill for predominantly majority of the ride it's not too physically exerting. There were probably only 3 tiny hills towards the end but Billy points them out to you in the beginning and also recommends walking up the hill instead of riding up them. Will never forget the experience!

10/10 would recommend. Someone in management needs to give Kimo a raise btw, he really made our trip awesome! We did the self-guided tour. this is really the way to go since you already get a great explainer of the mountain on the way up then you get to ride at your own pace on the way down as well. Big shout out to Mary at the bottom of the mountain for looking after us and giving us some last minute tips to get back to the home base safely.

We did the self guided tour and could not recommend more !!! Our guide on the way up was very nice, energetic, and full of knowledge. It was an early morning but the views were spectacular. Also the bakery the guide told us to stop at was amazing. All together a good experience and I would recommend to anyone.
