"Overlooking the St. Lawrence River, the Terrasse Dufferin (Dufferin Terrace) runs along the top of a cliff, some 200 feet above the Lower Town, and is presided over by the grande dame hotel Fairmont Le Château Frontenac. The terrace was constructed in 1879 and is named after Lord Dufferin, governor-general of Canada from 1872 to 1878, who is credited with saving the old city walls after zealous city planners began to tear them down. The terrace is some 1,400 feet long and makes for a pleasant place to stroll, or sit, if you are visiting Quebec City on a sunny day. The funicular thatdescends to the Lower Town is found at the northern end of the terrace, near a statue of Samuel de Champlain."

How to Visit Québec City on a Budget in 2025

"I love relaxing on Dufferin Terrace, the city's oldest boardwalk that runs in front of the Fairmont Château Frontenac; in summer you can watch street performers and buy chocolate-dipped ice cream cones from Au 1884, and in winter you can toboggan down the historic Dufferin Slide — it’s a charming, year-round vantage point for people-watching and views." - Matthew Kepnes

A must-visit promenade in Old Québec! Dufferin Terrace offers some of the best views of the St. Lawrence River and the iconic Château Frontenac. The wooden boardwalk is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Street performers, musicians, and artists often add to the lively atmosphere, and there are benches along the way to sit and enjoy the view. In winter, it transforms into a charming snowy walkway with a toboggan slide nearby! A perfect spot for photos, people-watching, or simply soaking in the charm of Old Québec.

The Dufferin Terrace is the perfect spot to soak up the natural beauty of Quebec City, with its stunning views of the St. Lawrence River and surrounding area – it's a wonderful place to visit, no matter the season! Come and take a leisurely walk while enjoying the breathtaking view of the St. Lawrence River, the longest river in the world! Governor General Dufferin's eponymous terrace has 'stepped up' as a favourite haunt for tourists and locals, offering a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city since its public debut in 1838. For over a hundred years, this wooden promenade has been the heartbeat of entertainment – hosting musicians and street performers in the summer and transforming into a snowy playground for the fearless toboggan enthusiasts come winter. Dufferin Terrace is the crown jewel of observation spots, offering a regal view of the Château Frontenac, the St. Lawrence River, and the surrounding landscape. It's the perfect place to snap a royal photo! You can also board the funicular here to explore the charming rue du Petit-Champlain in Lower Town. During the summer, the terrace is also a fantastic spot to enjoy the fireworks displays! Located beneath the Terrace, the ruins of Forts-et-Châteaux-Saint-Louis, a National Historic Site of Parks Canada, have been open to visitors for several years, offering a glimpse into the site's rich history as the governor's residence for over 200 years. The Dufferin Terrace is the 'height' of popularity, and for good reason – its stunning view is a major draw for residents and tourists alike!

If you’re visiting Quebec City, check out the toboggan slide! You can book ticket on their website in advance. The wait was approx. 2 hours, make sure you dress warm & bring hand/feet warmers. We got there around peak time at noon, and it was finally our turn at 2pm. Staff are wonderful and helpful. Hold on to your sleigh & enjoy the ride!

Undoubtedly the main tourist attraction in Old Quebec City. Whether it’s enjoying the scenic views of the Lower Town, gazing over the St. Lawrence River, admiring the architecture of Château Frontenac, enjoying the cool breeze, watching live performances by local artists, or simply spending time with your loved ones, this historic public space offers it all. We stayed at a nearby hotel and spent all our evenings and a couple of early mornings here.
