Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Auckland, New Zealand

"Alma, located in Britomart, is inspired by Andalusian cuisine and focuses on smokey flame-charred flavors while using seasonal local produce, such as Te Matuku oysters from Waiheke Island."

The 38 Essential Restaurants in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, New Zealand)

"When she worked at Amano, chef Jo Pearson made the churning Britomart location into the reliable dinner stalwart of Auckland. After the sale of the restaurant to Savor group, Pearson has made a new name for herself with Alma, a Spanish-inspired spot with touches of Moorish flavors. From gildas with cucamelons to crispy, ribboned pork skewers tucked into little house-made flatbreads, Alma’s sophisticated Spanish fare rides a delicious line between approachable and interesting. With a wide variety of vermuts and special attention to cocktails, it’s just as great for a drink and a couple bites as it is for a full dinner. — HE" - Hillary Eaton, Leisha Jones

Set in a beautifully preserved 1930s heritage building, Alma offers a stunning and welcoming space with terracotta plates, copper details, and thoughtful natural lighting. The lamb, slow-cooked over firewood, delivered both the boldness of open flame and the tenderness of gentle heat. It paired exceptionally well with a sauce full of herbs and coriander—surprisingly perfect together. The oysters, already delicious on their own, came with a sauce so well-balanced that it elevated them to what felt like their “final form.” From appetizers to mains, every dish made me think, “Did they really plan it to be this good?”—with such a high level of precision and harmony. The entire space—its scent, sound, lighting, and even the texture of the tableware—comes together to create a deeply satisfying dining experience. During my stay in Auckland, I didn’t find a restaurant that surpassed this one. I absolutely fell for it. Highly recommended for a special meal in the city.

Excellent. Went for a work dinner. Everything was sorted for us including the tasting menu. Everything was delicious in its own way, even the spicy margarita I had. The service was exactly as I would expect, the waiter at the end even asked a few people what their favorite dish was and attempted to guess, and got it right. 10/10

I visited Alma several times during my trip, and I think I managed to try almost everything on the menu! As a solo traveler, I really appreciated how the waitress kindly offered to serve me half-portions so I could taste more dishes — such a thoughtful and sweet gesture. The food is absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. If you’re in the area, this place is a must-visit. So comfortable, so tasty — you’ll want to come back again and again!

Had a great meal here. The menu was filled with some great sounding options. We were expertly guided through it by the service staff and were very happy with our selections. A very interesting drinks list featuring Spanish inspired cocktails, Vermut, Sherry and a concise and quality wine list

Absolutely enjoyed everything about Alma! The vibe was great, the staff were super friendly, and the food was just amazing. Honestly, the hummus was probably the best I’ve ever had. We ordered both the lamb and chicken, while the chicken was really nice, the lamb was next level. So tender and full of flavour, definitely my favourite. Highly recommend!

The food was delicious and we received great service as well. Would recommend the sirloin steak and the hummus. The atmosphere of the restaurant is modern and cozy. Cocktails are also very good. One of the better restaurants in Auckland City.
