Rice Bowl

I was seated promptly and the server took my drink order promptly. I ordered the lemon chicken and was exstatic to see the order arrive. It was prob 3 large chicken breasts with very light breading😁. If you want meat with your dinner this is the place for you. If you want breading with very little chicken this is not the place for you. Don't worry, I will eat your portion. Ive already eaten one of the breasts. Yum!

I haven't been here in decades (my own fault), and I really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Our waitress was so efficient and pleasant. I got the garlic pork and my dining companion (it was her idea to come here) got her favorite beef and broccoli. I also had hot tea. There was so much food, large servings. I also got a lemon chicken lunch plate to go. Absolutely delighted with Everything. I'm going back this next week just to get some of the other dishes that intrigued me on the menu. Truly a happy experience.

In spite of the fact that the food here was American style Chinese food, everything was fresh and piping hot. The portion sizes were enormous! While waiting for our food, we looked over at an adjoining table to see a man eating a massive mountain of chow mein. "No way he can finish that", I whispered to my partner. The service was excellent and didn't have to wait long for our order. Would definitely recommend. Update: 12/13/2025 Unfortunately, in the space of 1 year, the quality of the food has deteriorated. First, the good - the service was as good as before and the food came out piping hot and the portion sizes are huge. Prices have risen but that's happening everywhere due to tariffs. However, I ordered the pork chop suey and the waiter brought out a plate of pork and veggies smothered in a thick, dark sauce, so thick that I had to shine my cell phone's flashlight on it to make out what I was eating. It went downhill from there. All I could taste was that heavy, oily sauce. To make matters worse, I bit into pieces of sand, most likely caused by improper food prep. The manager comp'd me for the dish but IMO they need to up their game in the kitchen.

All right this is my go to Chinese spot old style Chinese chicken chow mein with crunchy noodles. This is by far the best dish I get every time and I can't find it anywhere else, not the flavor. Nothing close. They have other great dishes as well. The orange chicken is good. The beef and broccoli is good. The lemon chicken is good and we love our waitress. May so if you get may give her a fat tip. Now my opinion differs from others in Bakersfield but this is mine I absolutely love Rice Bowl.

The food was absolutely delicious and fresh! The portions were generous and very satisfying. Service was super friendly and excellent, and the dishes arrived at our table really quickly. Highly recommend!

They serve huge portions of food. I only half of my lunch. The combination plate is literally running over. The pork fried shrimp and soft noodles are delicious. My wife liked the Orange Chicken. I had the sesame chicken and it was okay. My only complaint is I prefer Hot and Sour soup and it wasn't available.

I order takeout from rice bowl pretty frequently and usually receive great service. Well my husband and I both called 4 times to try and place an order and received the dial tone. Beyond frustrated. I just want my chicken chow mein 🥲

Been coming to Rice Bowl since my childhood and it's a staple restaurant for my family! Can't believe this is my first review! My first advice COME HUNGRY! The portions are large! I ordered my favorite Rice Bowl Special Beef Dinner. If you love beef broccoli yet would like it spicier, try out the Rice Bowl Special Beef. I always order my chow mein Cantonese style & highly recommend. Fried rice is always delicious and the fried shrimp dipped in hot mustard is perfection! We also tried the Walnut shrimp (comes with white rice) was perfection! The perfect bite of shrimp and walnut! Highly recommend! Service is always impeccable and friendly!

My server, Candy, was such a Sweet Lady. A gentle smile and a desire to please. As always my meal was delicious. I was dining alone and the individual meals are huge, such a deal at $18.50. Truly enough to feed two to three people. The meal comes with their delicate egg flower soup, pork fried rice, chow mien, fried shrimp and choice of entree. The rice is fluffy and flavorful, the chow mien is rich & yummy, the tempura shrimp is so crunchy & light. I had the cashew chicken, a generous portion full of veggies, chicken & lots of chicken, what a delight! Unfortunately my cocktail was a huge disappointment. I ordered one of my favorites, a Tito's Martini Sadly whoever made it doesn't know how to make a good martini. It was so vermouth heavy that it totally overshadowed the Tito's. All in all a mostly good experience. You can count on a delicious fresh meal but cocktails can be iffy.

We were in this area of town and we were starving, so we decided to come here where we know the service is great and the food comes quickly. I ordered sizzling rice soup, and my husband ordered a combo meal. Both were very delicious and hit the spot. Our server was wonderful, very nice and gracious. 11/8/25

Waitress was amazing. Didn't even need a notepad to take your orders and was perfect on point. The dinner special is so amazing and filling. The word Needs to get out about how good the food is. The orange chicken dinner with fried rice, noodles, 2 shrimp and egg flower soup. And the availability to be able to purchase a scratcher to test your luck while eating.

Rice bowl is a popular spot for some great Bakersfield vibe type of Chinese food. Their lunch menu and pricing is one of the best in Bakersfield. Their lunch menu service is always fast with the food coming out hot. The portions are fantastic. I would recommend this place to everyone that loves Chinese food.

Love love love the egg foo young and the portions are enough for two people. The wait staff is always pleasant and very responsive.

When we first came here 8years ago it was really tasty and delicious. Slowly through out the years it's been declining, today was the final straw. Spent so much had it delivered and it was the worst we've ever had. This is our last time eating with them, we may try again but not any time soon. They either rushed to cook it or just gave up on flavor. The meat was flavorless and the Cantonese noodles were bland. The fried shrimp was all dough with a small bit of meat. The spring roll was good, but they don't make those fresh, store bought. It may have been an off day for them, but with the decline throughout the years it seems to be common now.

Ordered rice bowl through door dash, food was poor quality. Chow mein tasted flavorless, fried rice looked unmixed. This is my last time going to rice bowl, so disappointing.

The ambiance is very old school. The ac was not on but it was kinda nice still. The service was great. The waiter was kind and always had a smile on his face. He would come and check on us and never felt like he was pushing too hard. The food was very good. The lunch special was $15. It came with the soup and hot tea. The plate had lots of food and came with an egg roll as well. The soup was very tasty and not thick like other egg flour soups. The food was seasoned perfectly. We really enjoyed everything about our food. Again my only complaint would be the AC needs to be on.

Because they don't use msg in 90%of all food I can eat it. It's just what the doctor ordered and reminds me when I was much younger. I came here when I worked downtown church towerbuilding right behind the Rice Bowl.

Been here before and yet again I forgot why I don't frequent it. If you're looking for a good soup however when you're sick or just in the mood for, this place is great for that. I've had the sizzling rice soup, egg drop, and hot and sour soup. This last time I ordered the sweet and sour pork and found the meat very chewy and lots of pieces is just puffy dough, tough tendon, and fatty pieces without meat. The crunchy lo mein was okay. But, it he jasmine tea is one of the best I've had. The fried rice that came with the dish leaves a lot to be desired. I like my rice to have a wok-seared flavor and this does not. The staff is friendly. Nice, and attentive. They are efficient too considering how busy they are. The place is always busy and some tables at great and others are by the runners and the bathroom. Don't sit there, there is so much going on. There were also people talking on FaceTime and on speaker for the entire restaurant to hear the convo. Really? People buy air buds, a headset or whatever. Don't recall getting the memo that it is okay to talk and share your business with everyone in a restaurant when you're trying to enjoy a meal. if you go, expect the unexpected and you will be fine. Enjoy!

I ordered two orders of pork noodle soup and they gave me BBQ pork noodles and NOT pork noodle soup. I asked to speak with the manager and she argued with me. I did not eat the BBQ pork noodles but my wife did and within a few hours she got sick. Thank God for Bill Lee's across the street. They are much better. I have eaten at Rice Bowl for over 50 years and it has gone downhill in the last 6 months.

Came with a friend that recommended this restaurant. Lovely decorations and very pretty on the inside. The servers are kind and always smiling, especially with a good amount of people to serve. The food is good, especially its appearance.

Rice Bowl offers a great Chinese food meal filled with flavor and offers several menu items and combos to choose from. Most of the food items are served family style so you can share your food choices with everyone in your party. Since Rice Bowls remodel, the ambiance offers a welcoming and warmth to the restaurant. They have cozy intimate style booths to open dining areas with quality furnishings. As I'm writing this review, I'm getting hungry just thinking about their food. Some of things I enjoy from Rice Bowl is their BBQ Ribs, they are thick pieces of ribs, not little thin ribs like some other place will offer. I also prefer their fried rice compared to Bill Lee's down the street. Rice Bowls rice is full of flavor and the color of their rice is so much more appealing to the eye. Its hard to choose on their Chow Mein options so when we order the combo plates, I order the Cantonese style and my husband gets the pan fried. One comes with more vegetables while the other has a chop suey on top. The sweet and sour chicken surprise us since we weren't expecting chicken wings, but nonetheless, they were delicious. Rice Bowl's sweet and sour sauce has got to be some of the best sauce we've ever tasted. If you're looking for a sit down Chinese food restaurant restaurant in Bakersfield, of course their are a few to choose from but I definitely suggest you pick Rice Bowl. You won't be disappointed with the ambiance or your food choices. As many times as we've come here, we haven't had bad customer service, although when you're checking in our out, it may seem like the staff is ignoring you but its usually because they're busy.

We went here for our Christmas party. They for sure give you a large amount of food and I definitely had leftovers. But I have to say I like my favorite place better for Chinese food. They were good though. Waitresses and staff were great. Very accommodating. My egg foo young was a bit cold. It could have been crispier. The noodles were good but didn't seem as fresh as they could. The white rice was dry not fluffy. I would go back by myself. It might be better if it's not a crowd of 20.

One of my favorite places to eat. The serving sizes are pretty generous with lots of flavor. My favorite is the hard noodles and the orange chicken. I always choose a different item to try.Everything pretty much is served perfectly. Service was pretty good. We went just before lunch and it was not very busy. It is a very clean place.

Food was not exceptional. Bbq pork was just ham. Noodles were spaghetti noodles. Sweet n sour chicken tough, not deep fried properly. Sauce was not right.

Let me start of saying, portions are HUGE. My sister and I thought getting one regular dish and a lunch special would be okay but it was A LOT for two people. The food was great and I loved the service. Very attentive and quick. I love that there were many family and friends groups around us chatting. It really felt like a family space and fun to be at! Prices are definitely fair. Parking available :) Recommend going at least once

Brought my grandma here for lunch & the lunch special is a great deal. $15 a good amount of food. I had a moscow mule & it was so good, a little strong so if you are driving one should be enough!

They like to over charge people and not return the. Money the employee over charged us and then the wannabe manager so called named Andy wants to come and try to say oh the money will be returned to our card in 3 business days which we shouldn't have to wait for our money that was never supposed to been taken out in the first place The worst experience we ever had and the worst customer service ever they are so rude and did nothing to help

Great, cheap Chinese food and large portions. Be careful of the hot mustard though as it's hot!!

Hadn't been in years. So happy to say they are maintaining their reputation as a great spot for Chinese in town. Spacious clean dining area. Fast friendly service. Food quality, taste, portion size and price were spot on. Delicious lunch from the specials menu. Garlic pork and Orange chicken for Mom. Mom was happy to have a great lunch at a long time family favorite.

LUNCH SPECIALS!!! When I tell you it was 6 of us (2 kids) and it was more than enough that we even took some home. With each lunch special you get an egg flour soup, but we just can't get enough of it that we ordered a whole other bowl. The orange chicken is always our favorite, the flavor and tenderness of the chicken is always spot on. As a bigger family we got sat in the back which we loved because we know how loud and messy kids can get. Our service was more than satisfactory, we often got checked on, asked if everything was okay and our waitress even had a beautiful conversation with all of us. One of our favorite spots. We can't get enough.

This was a place I went to for dinner. I ordered chow yoke, with deep-fried tofu. The tofu was light as air, accompanying a cheerful stir fry of veggies in a simple brown sauce. This is good work. Waiter was good-tempered, service a bit slow, perhaps. Recommended.

It was our first time at Rice bowl and it was during a bday event. Not sure why I was not able to save the photo of the dishes and only the venue. They have a huge banquet/hall for events I did not know existed. Lights were just a lil dim in my opinion. Anyway, the fried rice and orange chicken were good! I am planning to come back to dine in and try their other dishes!

We found ourselves driving through downtown on a Sunday afternoon. Many of the restaurants are understandably closed on Sunday. We knew the Rice Bowl would be open. We walked in around 4:30 PM and the place was full. In less than three minutes we had a booth and were being served hot tea. The booths are comfortable at the Rice Bowl. Service is pleasant and efficient. We placed our order for one Kung Pao Chicken to share and ordered an extra egg flower soup. There was enough food for both of us, AND for tomorrow's lunch.

They have raised the prices again! The food is nothing special , quality has gone down!!

Takeout. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken. My wife got the chicken chop suey. Hers was watered down and didn't have the usual taste. The Kung Pao Chicken was anything but Kung Pao. Here's the definition: "Kung Pao chicken is a spicy, stir-fried Chinese dish made with diced chicken, peanuts, and chili peppers." There was no peppers and little taste. Barely any chicken & about 10 peanuts in the whole container. Absolutely NO SPICE. Mainly vegetables in a tasteless sauce. I called them and complained about getting the wrong container and they said. "Our Kung Pao Chicken isn't like all the other Chinese restaurants. We don't put peppers or spices and have made our own version. We put bell peppers in to give it flavor. FAILURE ON THAT!) Our customers seem to like it." Totally uninterested in resolving my complaint. Wouldn't discuss it and were borderline rude.

The food was really good, a bit of fat on the ribs but still tender. The rice didn't seem as fresh as previous visit but was still good. Everything came out really fast and wasn't very hot. The service was okay, we were seated in the back corner so we had to wait on refills and other things. Overall I really enjoyed the noodles and will be back to try other items on the menu.

I went to rice bowl to take my significant other to a different atmosphere than Bill Lees, my expectations from the last time I was there was (a bit higher end). Was I wrong! we walked in someone had their headphones on yelling to her was singing. We asked for a Mai Tai - tasted like gasoline so we returned it. I apologized to my better half for the atmosphere- not somewhere you would want to go for a date night. We will stick to Bill Lees

If you want meat in your food, don't go here. Everything my friends and I ordered, was vegetable only. No meat in the broccoli and beef. Sweet and sour chicken was frozen chicken nuggets in sauce. Can get this and frozen food isle at grocery store for $8.00.

Doesn't look like much from the outside, but when you walk in? It's huuuuge!! They've got hidden party rooms that fit even more people! I've gotta say. The food here is BOMB. If you're craving some good Chinese food, this is your place. And the lunch specials?!? Don't even question it. The portions are huge and for the price? $12.75 covers that including a side of egg flower soup and an egg roll (with a small side of sweet and sour dipping sauce). They even give you hot tea! I ordered the sweet and sour chicken lunch special today. It was so crispy on the outside, and the chicken was tender and moist on the inside. It was perfect. But..... I ordered the Cantonese style noodle chow mein and didn't get it, but rather just the traditional noodle. Oh well, the food was still delish! I will say that if you're in a rush during your lunch hour, don't dine in, but rather call ahead and order for pick up. The wait takes a while, but understandably so. Your food is made to order!

I always love their food. Been eating here for years and ordered through instacart for delivery. My first time today I decided to pick up and the owner of the restaurant made me review the service in front of them (on my phone) otherwise they wouldn't release my food to me. While I get they have people lying and faking they never got their orders but that was kinda desperate of them. I'm never one to go and fake something like that but their service needs to do better.

This was my favorite Chinese resteraunt in Bakersfield since I was a teenager and today I finally got to go back after 2.5 years of being away from home and it just wasn't the same. Came on a Friday night at 7pm and to our suprise we got seated right away. I orderd my usual individual dinner plate (orange chicken) and my partner ordered the walnut shrimp. Took about 30 min for our food to come out and when it did our food looked like it had been sitting for a few minutes. The orange chicken was hot but soggy. I was so looking forward to their crunchy exterior and it just didn't have it. The chicken was also cut up all weird and had some thick pieces in there. The noodles were good and egg roll were good but I just with the main dish was better. The honey walnut shrimp had great flavor, they were just soggy as well. The food was warm/hot but just didn't seem like it was freshly made. Disappointment here as well. Sometimes things change and there's nothing you can do about it but to remember the good ol times.

The food is always amazing I love the sauces and the servers are always polite! And as far as ambiance goes it definitely gives off family, party vibes which is awesome! I love this place!!!!

We have visited RB twice very recently. Once for Christmas Eve dinner and today for lunch to celebrate Chinese New Year. Happy Year of the Rabbit. Be prepared to be served a large amount of delicious food. There were 7 of us for CE dinner. We ordered 5 dinners and paid the $4/each for 2 additional plates. We still walked away with leftovers. Dinner specials are served family style, so it's easy to pass around the food to share. Today, there were 4 of us. They serve the lunch specials individually, so it's a little more challenging to share your main choice with others at the table. We made it work. As you can see from the pictures, each lunch could have easily fed 2 people. The servers and staff are very friendly. RB is large and it was a quick time before we were seated. This is a great place for families to come for a delicious Chinese meal, and you can keep the price down by ordering less meals than people. The restaurant was busy. This is clearly a well thought of place and everyone looked happy to be eating there. We were very appreciative they were open on Christmas Eve, as our church services were downtown. It allowed us to have a very special meal on a very special occasion. The 'To-Go' counter was very busy and very organized, so consider them for takeout as well.

Absolute best Chinese food in Bakersfield hands down. The meals are good priced under $20 for an egg flower soup, main dish, chowmein, rice and egg rolls. Enough for food for dinner and at least one or more lunches.

Good Chinese food but they don't have boneless spare ribs or crab ragons which are our go tos in New England Chinese restaurants. My kids loved the chicken and broccoli dish. They were fighting over the last broccoli.

Always a good place to find tasty Chinese food. The options are always consistent and the quantities are extremely generous. Although the price seems a bit high initially, there is always enough left over for a snack or great meal the next day. Candy, our favorite server has worked at the Rice Bowl for years, and always knows just what kinds of foods we like. She makes great suggestions when we want to try something different.

Tried this place for the first time and was so impressed! The family meals come with soo much food and everything was delicious!! Our server was amazing she was so sweet attentive and patient she said she had been working there for over 35 years! We will definitely be back and we highly recommend trying for good Chinese food restaurant style.

I ordered an orange chicken to go for my lunch. The phone was picked up promptly and i was able to place my order in no time. The sitting is nice and clean, " you can't sit in if you ordered your order to go" It was a good portion of chicken and just a small container of rice. My bag had some bags of sauces and fortune cookies. No utensils I couldn't taste the chicken. It is just a coated entity with orange suace. I wonder if it was a real chicken. I think that meal was a miss!

Don't order the $80 family meal for 5 adults. The food was not fresh. You can tell the noodles were rewarmed, the fried shrimp tasted like old oil, the pork was hard, the beef and broccoli was salty. the rice was not too bad. The best plate was the chicken. If you come here, order something different off the menu. You've been warned

Great quick lunch and for the price $12.75 I rather have this than some fast food place that would cost the same. The the service was fast and friendly. Nice portion size on the lunch combos, good taste and clean restaurant.
