I first visited the Saint Louis Zoo on October 1, 2024, alone with my psychiatric and medical response service dog.
First, I want to address the staff—they are amazingly educated. I was appropriately stopped and asked the two legal questions under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act):
Is that a service dog required because of a disability?
What work or task is the dog trained to perform?
Afterward, I was given a map and clear information about areas my service dog could not enter due to safety concerns (such as open bird exhibits), as well as instructions on how to contact staff if I wanted my dog temporarily held so I could still visit those areas. As a service dog handler, this was a huge 10/10 experience. Everything was handled professionally, respectfully, and correctly.
Now onto the zoo itself—it’s huge. Like, huge huge. I spent several hours there on my own and loved every minute. It felt much larger than the Fort Wayne Zoo, and there was so much to see.
I do wish the big cat area was laid out a bit differently, but the enclosures themselves were still well done and engaging.
I actually returned on October 24th with my husband during our honeymoon (we got married on October 22nd!). He absolutely loved the zoo as well. Once again, I was appropriately stopped and asked the correct ADA questions at the entrance—which, as a legitimate service dog handler, I truly appreciate.
On this second visit, I realized I had somehow completely missed the ape section during my first trip! I’m not sure how that happened, but I was very glad to discover it the second time around.
Overall, the Saint Louis Zoo was an incredible experience—well-designed, expansive, and staffed by knowledgeable, respectful employees. I would absolutely recommend it, especially to fellow service dog handlers.
