On the Grid : Cuban Club

"A century ago the Cuban Club was a space for people of Cuban heritage to fellowship and prosper. Today, although it is a community for Cubans, it's also a window into the rich history and culture of Ybor City. The Club can be booked for events without a lack of space; between 3 floors, a ballroom, cantina, patio and theater, they’ve got you covered." - Harbr Co.

35 Most Haunted Places in the World

"In Tampa, I report that the Cuban Club (opened 1918) is reputedly home to about 300 ghosts—including a playwright said to haunt the theater, a young boy seen in the basement where a pool once stood, and a young woman allegedly pushed from the third-floor balcony after refusing to dance—and that ghost tours of the venue are offered for those who dare." - Andrea Romano Andrea Romano Andrea Romano is a writer and editor in New York City. A 1917 neoclassical clubhouse that once provided health care, arts, and social life to Ybor’s Cuban community. Today it hosts cultural events and tours; local media often note its storied, sometimes spooky lore. It’s a living symbol of immigrant Tampa.

Tampa’s culinary legacy takes center stage at the annual Cuban Sandwich Festival, a lively showdown where local chefs compete for the title of best Cuban sandwich. With music, dance, and plenty of flavor, the festival draws crowds from across the region and has been featured in the Tampa Bay Times and Food Network as a must-attend for food enthusiasts. Beyond the sandwiches, the event spotlights Tampa’s deep-rooted Latin influences and celebrates the city’s rich immigrant history.

The show was good with the potential of being fantastic. I feel like they rushed through the last couple of scenes. The venue was beautiful. However, the drinks were Watered down. I feel like they added too much ice making the drinks taste like juice versus an adult beverage.

Google
I love the history there. It's probably more affordable than most venues and locals should book their event there as there are signs of aging and hurricane damage behind the scenes. It is still absolutely beautiful! They include bar service and the entire event team is great. The manager Tiffany is absolutely wonderful and accommodating. Book this space and ask for Tiffany!

I went to the Edgar Allen Poe Speakeasy event on October 25. It was a wonderful event. The people were talented and friendly. The drinks were also delicious.

Yelp
I've experienced this venue on multiple occasions: evening party & indie flea market. I think this place is definitely what you make of it. It's has the perfect local/Ybor city vibe for any event. It has multiple floors, each exemplifying a different vibe. It has a large outdoor area, perfect space for live music or outdoor event. It has the capacity for both a large or intimate event. Near a parking garage and street parking for seamless parking experience

Yelp
I've been here multiple times over the last decade or so for different events... this latest event outdoors was a super fun one! I was glad to be able to attend. I will say that my previous visits were for indoor and outdoor events, so I've seen what I think is the entire venue. The inside is very plain and unassuming. The outside, as well. For this event, there was 1 bartender to start, very slow and the line was ridiculously long... A 2nd bartender was added but both were really super slow. Glad I was sort of at the front part. Once you got up to the counter, there was no sign to tell you what they even had, so each person would have to ask, which didn't add to the speed of the service. The good news is - the beers were cheap! Always have enjoyed the events put on, my drop in the one star is for the slowness of the service...but everything else makes up for that.

Yelp
We attended 'The Haunted Tavern' at this location. It is the perfect location for such an atmospheric storytelling. With their theatrics and the building's known haunts, you have the absolute bet of everything.

Yelp
This is a cool historic social club in Tampa's Ybor cigar city neighborhood. El Circulo Cubano (The Cluban Club) was a gathering place and society for Cubanos in Ybor (where Jose Marti launched the independence fish against the Spanish and was joined in the effort by Teddy Roosevelt). A lot of cool history. I got to tour the club as part of an architectural history tour. Here's a link to the Wikipedia article on the neoclassical building designed by prominent Tampa architect M. Leo Elliott https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circulo_Cubano_de_Tampa And here's the venue's website: http://thecubanclub.org/ They are trying to make it viable and to restore and maintain it as a Tampa gem and event space. :)

Yelp
Went to The Cuban Club for the Rum Festival. There are several floors to this event space. You can definitely tell the historic features on each floor. One can tell that this would be a lovely place for a party. With the Rum festival, I just think that many people would be falling down the marble flights of stairs. That's just my observation. I know this venue is used often for different events and parties. I'm glad that it can be used in that sense with its atmosphere and history. What a nice place.

Yelp
Experienced my first show here as a VIP for 311. We were able to enter the VIP section early, only to check in and receive wristbands. Then had to wait in a long line outside on the street. Once the doors opened we moved very slowly into the club. The inside area designated for VIP was lackluster, to say the least. We had our own spacious bathrooms, and a bar, but nowhere to lounge or do anything really. Plus it was really dark. Everyone piled up at the bar inside, totally missing the quiet one outside the door! No wait for me. The drinks were pretty strong for venue drinks. It had been advertised on Facebook that Fuzzy's Tacos were going to be free, but they weren't. They were the only food stand in the VIP section that I could see. Everything else was in general admission -including the merch tables. The best amenity offered was the divided pit. GA had stage right, VIP had stage left. I was able to get right up front, and that rarely happens for me at 311 shows. 311, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, and Fortunate Youth sounded incredible! Although I love Ybors antique charm, this venue is incredibly outdated. I would revisit but without paying extra for VIP.

Yelp
I've never been to The Cuban Club before and finally had the opportunity to visit when I purchased tickets for the Alabama Shakes concert. Initially, I thought the concert was going to be inside the Cuban Club, but after I purchased our tickets I realized that the concert was going to be outside in the courtyard. The Cuban Club removed the walls along the alley behind the social club and El Pasaje to create an outdoor area that will accommodate up to 4,000 people. My sister and I parked in the Palm Garage on East 8th Avenue and North 13th Street, next to the Spaghetti Warehouse and Creative Loafing building. The parking garage was easy to enter, but it was a nightmare to leave after the concert entered because everyone was trying to leave at once and there were only two toll booths collecting payment for parking. It took me about 45 minutes to exit the parking garage from the third floor so I would advise grabbing a drink or meal in Ybor after a concert at The Cuban Club. Food trucks were lined along the street outside the Cuban Club entrance. The lines at the food trucks were much shorter than the lines inside the courtyard, but I'm not sure if any of the food trucks outside the club were selling beer or alcohol. The venue is general admission so arrive early to find a good spot near the stage. Unfortunately, you will lose your spot if you have to go to the bathroom. Since the concert area is a paved parking lot there are no seats or grassy areas to sit on. Wear comfortable shoes and don't bring a heavy purse since you will be standing in a crowd for several hours. Concert goers were pushing and shoving throughout the concert to get as close to the stage as possible. If you get claustrophobic this is not an ideal concert venue. Since tickets were fairly inexpensive I'd probably attend another concert at The Cuban Club, but I prefer having an assigned seat since I'm short and have trouble seeing the stage in a large crowd.

Yelp
My first time at this venue was to see Alabama Shakes in their courtyard. At first I was miffed because it was standing-room only, but it really worked. The setting was intimate, making this one of the best concerts I've ever attended! I was definitely not expecting to be standing so close to a band that I absolutely love. They had outdoor bars set up, so drinks were easily accessible albeit expensive. The restrooms were inside but unfortunately, they were leaking this night, so the floors were sopping wet with ladies in there trying to mop it all up, making for an overly crowded mess. Despite that, the place has a lot of character inside and it was so nice to enjoy good music al fresco. I will be excited to attend another concert at this venue in the future.

Yelp
Terrible venue! Disgusting restrooms. Stage is set up on a sloped parking lot. Why?

Yelp
I just attended the Florida Metal Fest at this venue. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from an all day music festival at this venue but it managed it quite well. There was a large stage set up outside in the courtyard areaand the second stage was just inside the building from the courtyard and there was plenty of room between the 2 stages to maintain the turn out. They also fit in food trucks and vendors comfortably and the Cuban clubs bartenders were pleasant to interact with. I'd definitely go to more events here!

Yelp
Amazing venue to hold an event. Its old, beautiful, and three stories. The bathrooms are very spacious. It's a great place to hold an event if you want your event to have the authentic taste of Old Tampa.

Yelp
Attended a musical in the small theatre. The seats were very comfortable and and no matter where you sat, it was a good view.

Yelp
Historic Building in Ybor City perfect for weddings and partys. Recently DayGlo was there and there were at least 2000 people there. The Manager Sean Godin is very helpful in planning whatever event you would like. Its a beautiful building. Tropical Heatwave is there every year.

Yelp
We have been providing security to the Cuban Club for years. Not only is it a cool property with lots of history and flavor but all the staff are always so friendly. Jeff and Stan are both awesome to work with and know what they are doing. If you plan to have a concert, a wedding, a business meeting, or anything that requires space I highly recommend the Cuban Club in Tampa. Pleasure working with you all and keep up the good work. Guy

Yelp
I've been here for so many random events from a Trinidad James show to the Ybor City Rum festival. While the venue itself is a little dated it actually is a good place to see some live music, enjoy eating from food trucks, and just chill out. It's actually a pretty versatile building because, there's an inside which includes three stories and and an outside section. Both have stages, bars, and there's even a pretty cozy movie theater located on the inside of the building. They always have this place set up pretty nicely, and whomever runs it ensures that all the events run generally very smoothly. I have no complaints, besides the fact that if the weather is hot outside it can be pretty grueling(which the owner's can't control). However, they do keep the inside bathrooms open for use and they are always clean-so that's very hospitable of them. If I see another Food truck event or concert here I wouldn't hesitate to go.

Yelp
What a great place to hold an event! I was recently involved in putting on a stage production at the Cuban Club and couldn't have asked for a better experience. Stan and Jeff and the whole staff was very accommodating and so easy and pleasant to work with. I look forward to working with them all again in the future.

Yelp
I went to see a show it was a horrible venue lines were not organized they were unprepared ATM did not work security was nonexistent bars shut down early because cards readers did not work All together just a bad experience. Extremely disappointed!

Yelp
We just held our daughter's bat mitzvah service in the theater and a luncheon in the theater lobby. Jeff and Stan were a pleasure to work with and made sure every detail was taken care of. Our guests were floored by the beauty of the building. This is a wonderful venue to hold an event, with several floors of unique spaces to rent. They easily worked with our caterer and we were just delighted with how smoothly everything went. Highly recommend!

Yelp
My theater company recently performed there and it was such a great experience! Jeff and Stan are amazing. They really took care of us, took the stress right out of the whole process, and were great to work with! The space is beautiful and they even fixed up some additional back stage areas for the cast to use. We'll definitely be coming back to put on our next show there. Thank you!

Yelp
I have been to many events at the Cuban Club. It is a great group venue!

Yelp
I can not say enough about Jeff and his crew. I run powerlifting meets thoughout Florida and deal with venues of all types. This is an atypical type event and venues normally do not get what we are trying to do. You would think they had done a hundred o them. Jeff and his team were responsive, polite, fun and helpful. Add that to the fact that it is beautiful and in a great historic part of Ybor City, can not be beat!!!

Danielle S.

Yelp
Worst wedding I have ever been to at this place! Do yourself a favor and book elsewhere. The staff to start was rude and not accomadting at all. The temperature in the room was set to 58 degrees. Everyone was so cold that our teeth were chattering! Employees told us that "once we started dancing we would warm up". Well that also did help the fact that our food came out ice cold as well!!! Terrible. Ybor also attracts a lot of strange people as well! Stay away!

Monique S.

Yelp
You get what you pay for..... Worst customer service from the management, not accommodating at all for a wedding! Freezing cold ball room, cold food, caterer dropped off food and someone was to attend to sternos and obviously did not!Cocktail hour had some handicap guest standing with no chairs in the room at all. They say the place is haunted and it surely is by some awful management!

Bobby A.

Yelp
Just this past weekend we had a surprise sweet 16 birthday party for my daughter on the 2nd floor lobby and it was a total hit. The planning took 2 months and the tem at the club couldn't have been nicer and easier to work with. Jeff is very hands on and knowledgable about the club itself and we are extremely satisfied with our entire experience. Highly recommended!!

Yelp
The Cuban Club was a spectacular place for us to get married at. Our wedding was October 3, but we met with Jeff Hartzog (the owner) back in May. From day one, he was fully engaged and excited and attentive to us and our vision for our wedding. The Ybor area is gorgeous and historic as it is, which already screams romance. But when you enter the Cuban Club, you enter another world. The building is almost 100 years old, and while it's retained its timely feel to it, Jeff and his team have highlighted the best parts of it to really provide a breathtaking venue for any event - but specifically, a wedding. We had quite a few stipulations - 250 guests, 20 in the wedding party (9 maids, 9 groomsmen, flower girl and ring bearer), our desire to have the ceremony and reception in one venue, our desire for easy parking for guests, an open ballroom area, a separate space our wedding party could get dressed before the ceremony...all of these and more were "requirements" my husband and I had. And Jeff BLEW us out of the water! He has been in the service business for many years, and definitely knows what he's doing. From his numerous vendor connections to his advice on decorations and details, to his prompt responsiveness every time we asked a question - without him and the Cuban Club, our wedding would not have been half as amazing as it was. Thank you Jeff for making our day amazing!
