I AM A MAN Plaza

This striking monument is the "I AM A MAN" Plaza in Memphis, Tennessee. It serves as a powerful tribute to the 1,300 Black sanitation workers who went on strike in 1968 to demand dignity, safety, and fair wages—a movement that ultimately brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to the city. The Description Standing at the heart of the plaza is this 12-foot-tall sculpture crafted from bronze and stainless steel. Designed by artist Cliff Garten, the blocky, monumental lettering echoes the iconic placards carried by the strikers. The Details: If you look closely at the surface of the letters, they are etched with the names of the original 1,300 strikers. The Setting: It sits on a circular stone base inscribed with quotes from Reverend James Lawson, located right next to the historic Clayborn Temple. The Review Visually, the statue is a masterclass in "minimalist impact." By using the typography of the protest itself, the art avoids being overly abstract; it hits you with the literal truth of the era. The contrast between the weathered bronze and the mirror-like stainless steel sides creates a beautiful play of light that feels both grounded in history and reflective of the present. Very interesting outlines the events as you walk around the circle. The statue itself has the speech MLK spoke during that time. It also has the names of all striking grounds keepers who wanted higher wages.

While visiting Memphis, it was integral that we go see the history. Civil Rights history, to be specific. I was born in 1968, so I never experienced what my parents witnessed. The I Am A Man Plaza is adjacent to the Clayborn Temple. This site is where the Memphis sanitation workers gathered during a strike in protest of working conditions. The Plaza is an open site that has a sculpture paying tribute to the strikers and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The plaza also has a wall engraved with the names of the people who participated in the strike. Martin Luther King came here during the strike and was later assassinated. It's hard to understand the thought process of those who had hatred for another person in that time period. This is why it's important to visit places like this just to pay respect. This is a free site at no cost.

They're still working on the Claiborne Church, this is a powerful Monument from the Civil Rights that culminated in Memphis and Dr Martin Luther King's assassination.

This monument was a result of the sanitation’s workers strict for better wages and working conditions. Its title came from the famous speech given by Dr. Martin Luther King at nearby church on sight. Great place to go and visit while in Memphis

Beautiful memorial for those that fought for civil rights and those that lost their lives while doing so. It has a lot of unique architecture and creative ways to display names in loving memory. The historic Clayborn Temple is right behind/next to it.

A small, but nice looking plaza on a quiet street corner about 2.5 blocks from Beale Street. The church makes for a nice background. It's advertising for a small museum, of the same name, at the mouth of the aforementioned Beale Street.
