On the Grid : MeepleMart

"Tucked away in one of the basements of the business office towers on Spadina is Meeplemart, Canada’s largest online game store focused on board games and miniatures. With weekly game nights focusing on a different board game they do a great job of creating a friendly environment and removing the intimidation factor for new players. If you’re looking for a board game for board game night you could get lost in the options here but with recommendations from friendly staff you will love exploring the aisles." - Tennis

This is quite the place... The sign is a little misleading outside as it is past the condo-looking entrance and down the stairs - look for the Warhammer 40,000 sign. There are games tables to the left and model terrain past the counter. All bags have to be left at the counter and you get a tag for your items. At the far left are the board games - clearance items on the left and plenty of selection in the aisles. There are some character figurines there along with Funko characters on the wall to the left when you enter. Reminds me of Mandarake in Japan (but not as dark).

Do you want to feel watched while you are shopping?! This is the place to go! I am not a regular here but I go from time to time to check the stock. My mom, who also likes the hobby, came out of town and I took her to show her the store and the variety of products. I am familiar with their the "no-bag" policy and I understand the logic behind it, so as soon as we entered I gave them our backpack. The whole time we were there, we were watched by the asian guy with UofT t-shirt who moved with us as we moved to the different parts of the store. I ended up buying 2 colors because I needed them but perhaps I should have taken my business elsewhere. Trust goes both ways. If people comply with your policy, you should have some trust and respect towards your customers too. And a guy with his mom?! Know your audience!!! Edit for the owner's response: The incident I was referring to happened approximately 2 weeks ago on a Saturday, not a Tuesday. So I don't think I mistook anyone's actions. I am well aware of the difference between a person staring directly at me and someone doing an inventory check. I understand a business owner defending their employees' actions but the way you do it without checking your CCTV or any kind of investigation shows no basis for the defense.

Hidden gem of a hobby shop. I’m not kidding, the sign is blocked by another sign and the entrance is just a plain glass door. Shop is in the basement and stocked with a surprisingly wide array of hobby kits. Protocol is to leave bags or backpacks at the front counter then receive a corresponding ticket similar to coat check. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable!👍

A huge selection of board games and miniatures are available at this discreet store located in the basement of a building next to TD. It is definitely a must visit if you’re into the hobby or looking for your next game. They have also got a good sized discounted game selection. Due to its size, board games are organized in alphabetical order. If you have any bags, you must check them in at the cashier for safe keeping. Meeplemart is definitely one of my favourite shops in Toronto to visit to browse and purchase board games.

The pinball machines moved to a different location, I forgot to check the sign that said where it was. I actually came to play then but got side tracked looking at everything else. Amazing store for hard to find games and table top games

Previously had shopped at Meeplemart once or twice, didn't really think about it one way or the other- there was a good selection of board games but ultimately I could get most of them closer to where I live for similar prices. Additionally I had some bad experiences the last times I shopped there, so I pretty much wrote off going back. But recently I heard they were getting an exa-Arcadia, to which my reaction was: "wait, they have arcade games?" Turns out it's mostly pinball, but still pretty cool to see. Shame that the exa's buttons are american-style and don't feel the greatest (and the stick is a bat top which is eh, but thats more personal preference), but its cool it exists in toronto at all. I'd be interested to see if they get more games on it, right now all that's on it is Dodonpachi SDOJ which personally isn't my favourite shmup; however I will be keeping up to see if they get more machines or games added to the exa. Pricing per game was fair, seems to be a dollar per token more or less. Not many arcades around here with things I actually end up wanting to play so hard to compare. To review the rest of the store as well, I was pretty impressed to see the scope of the store branch out a lot since last time I visited. Seems like the gunpla/model section expanded a lot, and there's some things I was surprised to see (having some darius and r-type models is pretty cool). There's also a lot more warhammer/tabletop game stuff than I remember, which isn't totally my thing but it's definitely one of the best selections i've seen in a physical store. Pricing seemed mixed, there were a few things that seemed worth the money and others that seemed overpriced compared to other stores. Overall I was pretty impressed by Meeplemart, even if my previous experiences were mixed I think the store is generally a cool place to look around now with a lot of stock. It's pretty impressive what they managed to do with the basement space they have, and i'd probably take people here over other board game stores downtown purely for the variety of things carried. Unsure how much i'd purchase due to some of the prices, but if they got more arcade cabinets i'd at definitely come back for that!

Had a terrible experience here and will not be back. First, the store itself is not inviting at all and is incredibly dim lit. They also have a no bag rule that applies to any size bag even bags smaller than fanny packs. This is pretty exclusive especially to women and afab people who more likely have tiny bags with them. My friend had a tiny bag with her that only fit a small wallet and was immediately told she would need to check it or not look at the store, like no she will not just check her wallet im with you. Secondly, the team was not knowledgeable about the games and gave misinformation. They said the game i was looking for wasn't released yet so no one had it. That was incorrect and I went to the board game store around the corner and they had it along with a lot of other fresh releases and the staff was way more friendly , gave great suggestions and didn't make you feel like they thought you were going to rob the place. Save your money and go around the corner to the other board store where staff makes board gaming more inclusive and approachable.
