Ambergris Caye, Belize Travel Guide

"A downtown San Pedro staple known for hearty, traditional Belizean fare cooked over open flames in large pots, producing richly flavored soups, stews, and curries. Typical dishes include beef stew and fish soup served with coconut rice; the compact, popular restaurant operates Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner and often fills up, so reservations are advised." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. "El Fogon In San Pedro, a town on Belize 's northern island of Ambergris Caye, the Mestizo traditions are strong. The Mestizo people are descendants of the Maya and the Spanish, and when those two cultures mixed, a new one was born. You'll find many Mestizo people in San Pedro, but you'll hardly find a better Mestizo restaurant than El Fogon, a spot owned by a local woman known as Miss Suzannaand run by her daughter. All of the food is cooked in a traditional outdoor oven ( fogon means "kitchen hearth"), and everything is delicious. Try the salbutes , a tacolike dish made with fried tortillas, with a texture that's somehowboth soft and crunchy, or the pig tail with split peas. And the coconut rice is to die for."

Yum yum yummmmm! The citrus lime shrimp with coconut rice was phenomenal and so fresh. Dad had the 4 tacos, 2 shrimp and 2 lobster and he ate it all! The food was fresh, a lot of it and the service was amazing. We had Mr. Juan who welcomed and served us with kindness and a smile. The restaurant is decorated nicely with lots of seating. Their bartender was hopping so they must make good drinks too! I highly encourage you to come and enjoy a delicious meal with great service

Delicious food. Made the drive from Secret Beach into town for this restaurant after it was highly recommended. The coconut curry was delectable. Definitely worth the golf cart ride.

Unreal food staff and atmosphere! 5 stars across all platforms. We had the shrimp and catch of the day (red snapper) and wow! So so good. Would really recommend this place and also, not too touristy.

Have you ever been to a restaurant so good you forget to take pictures of the food. This is El Fogon. The conch soup - amazing. This is a local gem. You know it’s really good when you go inside and the place is packed with locals on a weeknight. A must on your trip to the island.

Wonderful restaurant in Ambergris and most certainly a taste of the Caribbean with a local flare. The food was amazing, when we travel back to the island we will for sure be coming back. The fried lobster looked absolutely amazing, though none of us tried it. We had a large group and got lots of variations of different dishes. The cocktails were great! If you have a large group- make reservations.

El Fogon is a consistently excellent dining experience! Every dish we have been served has been exemplary. They are our go-to when we catch fish on a tour - bring them the filets and they will prepare them as you wish, with sides. We had family in town last week and visited El Fogon again - Rita was our server and she prompted me to write this review. There are a lot of servers that go through the motions here - not Rita! She had a sincere smile the entire meal, checked on us when drinks were low, and overall, was a breath of fresh air! She was warm and welcoming. When you want an authentic, high-quality Belizean meal and great service, in a "date night" atmosphere (not loud and super-bright dining room), El Fogon is the restaurant to visit!

We had a local dish, salbutes, for starters. The fish curry and the citric special fish for mains. Juan was an amazing server, he explained the dishes to is and we followed his local recommendations, no regrets! Food was very good, Juan was very helpful friendly and polite. It was the best meal we've had in San Pedro.
