Jewel of Himalaya, Newtown CT

This is me and my boyfriend’s favorite restaurant to escape to. The food, service and atmosphere are exceptional. We sit at the beautiful bar and enjoy serene views of the Himalayan mountains while we sip always fresh crisp cocktails. We usually get a curry dish. I like the thali because it offers a variety of tastings. We’ve gone over a dozen times and we always leave happy. We’ve now taken a liking to visiting the tea shop next door for medicinal herbs, tea, honey and sound bowls. We love this place and cannot wait to visit again.

A few nights ago, I ordered dinner for two from this restaurant via Instacart/Uber. Our favorite Indian restaurant, Taj, in Fairfield, no longer delivers to our area. After seeing the 5-star reviews, I was impressed and hoped for the best. We ordered the same dishes we had gotten from Taj many times. To say we're disappointed is an understatement. "Dismayed" and "disgusted" would be more to the point. The order arrived 40 minutes late (Uber did give us a $15 credit). The food was not appealing, the portions were small (10 oz metal containers, not well packed or closed) and the "dessert" for $6.00 was three M&M-sized balls that arrived in a plastic container half the size of a paper bathroom cup. My Chicken Korma was grainy, overly sweet, and had too much of a particular spice I couldn't identify. The paneer, the other dish we ordered, was not great either. Neither was the rice. (See attached image of uneaten food.) The Naan was unexceptional. All of this led me to wonder: how did this lackluster food earn this place five stars? In addition, the tasteless Chicken Korma did not sit well in my gut, to say the least. I don't know if this was due to the delivery transit time being excessive or because the chicken was of not good quality and fresh to begin with, but it was a waste of $68.00—a way too high price to pay for this subpar culinary experience. When I went back and finally read your 1-star reviews, I realized that I wasn't the only one who had such a disappointing and costly experience. I want a refund, but I'm guessing that I'll get an owner response sugar-coating our experience. (I'd like to see him or her eat the pretty dreadful food that was delivered to us.) Note: We don't believe your 5 stars for a moment.

I had the privilege of dining here quite a few times and there isn't a bad dish on their menu. Aside from the exceptional food, the restaurant itself is a beauty and the service is exceptional. The owner is kind, passionate and attentive and I promise, you won't be disappointed if you eat here. The tea room next store is also quite lovely and makes for the perfect post-meal experience too.

One of the best restaurant meals my friends and I have had together in a long time! We went there as a group to celebrate my birthday. Their tea is exquisite and their food is delicious. Their wait staff provided excellent service. The overall experience we had was truly memorable!

This is a wonderful restaurant. Delicious food and great vibe. They also have a very nice bar which we enjoy on occasion. Next store, they operate an enchanting tea room that's very worthwhile. Recommended!

The food was almost perfect. The chicken korma was very flavorful, same with the tikka masala. The only thing that was not perfect at Jewel of the Himalaya was the naan. It was not as good as other restaurants naan, but it was still good. Servings were big enough for 2 people to share, but more rice could be given. The service was very good, and I never needed to ask to fill up my water. The atmosphere was also very nice, but the restaurant was a little small. Overall, very good.

To be perfectly honest on the front end, this type of food is not my usual go to, but my sister really wanted to try it and my friends raved about this place so I reluctantly agreed. Im glad I went. The service is on point. Very friendly and attentive. The food we ordered was excellent, fresh and full of flavor. The prices were reasonable considering all the above. I was really pleasantly surprised by the experience. If you are like me and not always willing to step outside your comfort zone... this one lands as a safe bet! Enjoy!

If you've eaten at The Naan this is better. Clean and tastefully done. We ordered lunch specials in each of the chicken, beef and mutton. DELICIOUS. Good quality & quantity of meat in each of the 6 curries, I'm truly impressed and definitely a regular now. Service is second to none, everyone smiles and is happy to help! Plus they are kind enough to always allow me to bring my son's home cooked food (he's anaphylactic to various foods).

I have been dying to try this place for a long time but my wife doesn't like Indian food so I had to wait for her to be out of town haha. It was delicious, the flavors are amazing, fresh ingredients and overall wonderful. The tika masala with NaaN was my favorite but the noodles were also incredible

YUM. This place has amazing food. The murg makhini was creamy and delicious and the chicken korma was to die for, we soaked up every bit of the sauce with our garlic naan. The service was just as great as the food and the music added a wonderful zen atmosphere to it all. They even have a nice patio to sit on. I can't wait for the tea room next door to open!

Jewel of the Himalaya is a gem. This is a really nice restaurant with classy service. "Namaste" I was introduced to this cuisine in Towson MD and thrilled to hear that in Newtown I could enjoy it again. We came here for lunch and had a blast. The food was amazing, I loved the lunch specials, and the Himalayan naan, is good for breakfast, lunch, brunch, a snack, dinner, and dessert. Loved it! This is definitely a location to return to, and explore the rest of their amazing menu. "Namaste"

This place rocks! Came here right when they opened around 5 on a Saturday, place gets packed so I'd recommend reservations. The food speaks for itself and is the reason people come again and again. Love the ambiance of the place as well, high ceilings, patio and plenty of seating inside, bar seating as well, laid out very nicely. Now to the food! Came with a party of 4, started out with the fried pork dumplings and some naan. So delicious! Loved the dumplings which came with two types of sauces to spread or dip in, one was spicy and is perfect for those who love heat. For my entree I got the Lamb Vindaloo which comes with basmati rice and a heat level of your choice, I got hot which was spicy enough for me to still enjoy my meal. Rest of the party got butter chicken, tikki Marsala and a seafood dish I am forgetting, all loved their meals. Our server was super helpful in guiding us as well, definitely one of the best Indian restaurants I've ever been too.

Delicious!! The ambiance is beautiful, with amazing scenery of Nepal/mountains. Nice firepit outside too for warmth. All of the servers are extremely friendly, and although they were super busy due to Mothers Day, they made sure we were taken care of. We started with the Momo set which offers 3 different kinds of dumplings, chicken, vegetable, and beef. By far the beef was my favorite !! For mains we got the vegetable korma, murgh makhini (butter chicken), and chicken vindaloo. We also tried their plain naan and their Himalayan naan. All the dishes were delicious, the butter chicken was a favorite! The Himalayan naan was sweet and unique, not for my personal taste but my Dad really liked it. I would definitely come back for a nice dinner again!

We have not been to the restaurant in over a year but were passing by so we stopped. Service as always was excellent. Food also was great. Was disappointed they stopped putting the padam and 2 dipping sauces on table at the beginning. If you still want it, then it is extra. Was a little thing we missed. Would have downgraded to 4 stars but if you had never been there before you would not know any different.

Wow!! So good! My dad picked this spot for his birthday dinner. It doesn't look much from the outside and it was too hot out to sit on the patio but inside is so pretty! A full long bar and high ceilings. It's gorgeous. I'd go here for a first date. Our server was great! So nice and informative, she answered a ton of my questions with a big smile. I really can't remember the specific names of our meals, but all 4 of us loved what we got. We also shared fried pork dumplings and garlic naan which were both awesome. I got butter chicken, it wasn't called that on the menu but that's what it was! My sister got tiki masala chicken, ours tastes similar but I preferred hers since it wasn't as sweet as mine. Still both were great. My husband got lamb vindaloo which is his "go to" at Indian restaurants and my dad got the seafood tiki masala. My sister and I shared a mango lassi, it was served room temp so once i put some ice in it, it was great. We can't wait to come back!!! You should make reservations.

My go to spot for take out. They offer online ordering and third party delivery. However, they have a cute outdoor patio, large bar and many tables for service. The portions of food are large and always hot. My go to is garlic naan and chicken tikka masala. They offer different levels of heat for their sauces so there is something for everyone! Staff is extremely attentive and kind. I would definitely recommend if you are looking for a delicious meal.

The food was great and the service was excellent. The staff was very friendly and we were seated and served quickly. The food was hot and plentiful. The decor is pretty and there is outdoor seating as well. We will definitely go back!

So the food is amazing and I would totally recommend this restaurant. However take out order is what I personally recommend. And I will tell you why... We've always done take out order and that goes well until one day my family and I decided to go to the restaurant in person for dinner. The service was amazing and the servers were very nice and professional in their work. So I give them a shoutout and the person who served us was super awesome! However the part that really threw me off was when they found. out it was somebody's birthday (We happen to go on my younger brother's birthday and the people next to our table were celebrating someone's birthday), they would bang a huge gong thing many times, very loudly. As an individual with disability, and sensitive to loud sudden sounds, it really upset my evening. Imagine if you and your spouse or family member were in a middle of eating and having a deep conversation, and all of a sudden the gong goes off and you look over to see find out it's somebody's birthday. Sure, that's great but the gong was so loud and unexpected, it would freak anybody out! it left me wondering if there was a fire or something. Because of that atmosphere, I would never go back to that restaurant in person. I will only to take out orders from now on. But if you want to go to that restaurant, bring ear plugs, and don't mention to the folks who work there that it's your birthday unless if you want to get your ears blown up by the loud, insane gong! If there was no loud gong banging, then I would fully give this place a five star.

Very yummy and delicious authentic Indian cuisine! If you go on a weekend make sure you factor in some wait time. It took a bit to get seated but we weren't in a rush! I thought the serving plates were cute. The place is also very clean and decorated nicely! Just be aware if it is busy and everyone is ordering the Tandoori chicken it can get very hazy/smokey inside as it comes on a hot skillet (see picture) Just wanted to mention that! But luckily they do have outdoor seating!

Love the Jewel. It is very good Tibetan food and always consistent. Take out is great but they also have a wonderfully warm restaurant for a date night or special occasion. All the people who work here are helpful and friendly. Our family eats here at least once a month or so, I know you'll like it.

Great atmosphere, average size resturant on the inside. The staff was very friendly, attentive and service was quick too for how many people was there. Food was so good and great portion. Their Himalayan naan is delicious too. Might be the best Indian/Himalayan food in the area. Highly recommend coming here and they do take as well.

Haven't been back here in probably ten years since last week and the food has gotten even better over time. The momo set appetizers were amazing and authentic! Out of all of them I think the chicken was the best but seriously they were all fab. The masala sauce is slightly sweeter than I'm used to but I still loved it. The makhini sauce tho.... DAMN AMAZING! We got a side of sauce to take home bc that alone without a protein, over rice is a full asssss meal itself. Cannot wait to come back here more often- I forgot what a gem jewel is

I usually don't do reviews, but I love this place so much. Nice city like ambience. The service has quick and very nice. I was very accommodating and the food is delicious. Even my kids who usually don't like ethnic food. They love it several times and when I cannot go, I pick up. The meals are very abundant don't order too much even the lunch. That is a very great price smaller than regular evening meals. I still can eat two times half of it.

I've been eating at Jewel for years. Used to go to their Yorktown location when I lived there. I moved to CT and they opened the Newtown location. Same quality, great staff and close to home. So it's a win win.

This is our second visit and the food and service continue to be excellent. The food is well prepared (you can request heat level) with lots of great vegetarian options. They have a lovely, cheerful dining room. Will definitely be back!!

One of the best restaurants in Newtown! This is the type of restaurant that Newtown has needed for so long. The owner and the staff are so friendly and accommodating! The food is incredible!!! Every single time it is fresh and steaming hot when it comes out of the kitchen. I don't think you can get a bad dish here because the staff are so incredibly knowledgeable and really help you out. I've tried multiple different dishes here so far and all have been delicious. I highly recommend coming here for a date or bringing a large group of people. Even the drinks are spot on. Very grateful this gem of a restaurant has come to Newtown! Will be eating here every time I come home to visit my dad!

I'm not certain why I have neglected reviewing this great restaurant. Their food is awesome. The preparation is exacting and portions generous. The kormas and biryanis are perfection. The naan offerings are always a tasty side. The restaurant is pleasant, for the most part unchanged from the last two iterations. The best part about JOH is the friendly and caring staff- from the kitchen to the servers- unrivaled in the area.

We are visiting from NYC and eating out in CT has been a hit or miss (despite the yelp reviews). The food at JOH was absolutely delicious. We got the Himalayan korma, the paneer, lamb chili, and naan. All good complex flavors and felt really authentic. Service was excellent and ambiance was nice. I felt bad that I was in a hoodie (it probably was a little too casual) for the ambiance. They had YouTube videos playing of the Nepali ppl and that was cool. Def got you in the mood of being in the mountains.

My family and I came here in 2022 with a large group reservation and ordered many dishes ranging from curries, momos, and hot plates. Each dish was mediocre, lacking in any depth of flavor. Despite this, we thought we'd give them another chance for a Diwali celebration. We called a week in advance for a 17 person reservation and was assured we'd have a table at that time, When we showed up, the front of house was extremely rude and i accommodating for why our table wasn't ready: The excuses ranged from "we thought you'd be late" to "the party is finishing up soon we'll have you seated soon". We waited for 30 minutes, it was clear we weren't being seated anytime soon but the front of house wouldn't accept responsibility for their mistake, the last excuse we heard was "we actually don't take reservations for parties over 10." Really pathetic stuff.

Seventeen family members planned to celebrate Diwali here on 11/11/2023. My wife made a reservation on 11/06/2024. My SIL called on 11/9/2023 to confirm the reservation. We show up at 7 pm and they said there's a large party just finishing up. Then 30 minutes later one of them says, 'we don't take reservations for more than 10 customers. I have never had this experience in the 41 years I've been eating out around here. The incompetence of the management and staff leaves us for lack of words! This is a restaurant that has lost our business forever. We went to Tamarind in Newtown, not only were we seated promptly, but also served with grace.

It becomes clear the moment you walk into Jewel of Himalaya that it is a restaurant built upon great care, detail, and authenticity. The music and decoration immerse you in a cultural experience, that underlines the incredible quality of the food, which is excellent. The staff is attentive, dedicated, friendly, and helpful, and make your time here feel sophisticated, without ever losing a feeling of comfort. No notes, you should eat here.

Called ahead just to be safe. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. Screens, which might have shown sports, showed beautiful scenes of Tibet & the Himalayas. The food was very hot, delicious, spiced as advertised. My lamb was tender. I am not familiar with the cuisine, but I will return.

An amazing Indian dining with excellent dishes from South Indian, Indo-Chinese, and Nepalese cuisine. Personally I recommend the beef Nepali Thali platter to get a little taste of everything. Either way no matter what you get you will not be disappointed.

This place is a trendy/wow place to be in Newtown, especially....if you love and appreciate 5 star Indian / Nepalese food. Service is extremely attentive, great for relaxing drinks at the bar or a sit down dining thing. Next to the tremendous edibles, good drinks, music, and top service, we were momentarily swept away by the huge screen TV's moments of shared successes by those who conquered Everest....Go, at the VERY Least , Once.

I am writing this review after my second time here. Service and Ambiance are perfect. Some of the best and most interesting Indian/Tibetan menu ever. Beef and Lamb are my favorites here. Homemade Momo's are to die for. Can not wait to come back soon.

I live in Middletown. My favorite Indian restaurant to date that is near to where I live has long been Utsav in Wethersfield. However, they now have competition. This restaurant, recommended by my cousin who lives in the Newtown area, was OUTSTANDING in every single possible way. If they were only closer!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place! The ambience was clean, beautiful, and comfortable; the food was incredible, and the service was incomparable. It was also clearly very popular. If it weren't so far way from Middletown, I would be there weekly. Five out of five stars and begging for a location in Middletown!

When you walk in, you're immediately reminded a peaceful temple, and additionally the delicious scents of just wonderful food being cooked. It's authentic, the staff are peaceful, polite, and ever helpful. The food was incredibly good. The spices were just perfect. The chai is made from scratch. There are Himalayan signing bowls and peaceful music that is Divine and lovely. I wanted to go back the next day.

Get that chicken Tika and sagg paneer and garlic naan maybe Mai tai's for a quick dui? Hit for takeout cause the reservations seem a lil tight. Parking not too bad. Wash the take out down w rose provence. Medium preference might be too much for ya. Hey everyone news flash- fried food of any kind when you put it in a container and go home w it (it will turn soggy) be an adult and and put it in the toaster oven w a close I on it cause oil burns haha) don't tattle tell in the restaurant. This is the best Indian food I have ever eaten. I can't wait to return. The service was amazing. Everyone is super polite, and will explain each and every food item. The place is very clean and the decorum isn't overwhelming. It doesn't smell like a Indian restaurant at all. I hate when my clothing smells like my food. Will be returning very soon.

I've been here a few times and every time the food is amazing. This last time we went for my birthday and it was just an incredibly lovely and delicious experience. We are the veg pakora, lamb chili and steamed chicken dumplings for appetizers -- all absolutely incredible. For dinner we had chicken tikka masala and beef makhini with regular and garlic naan. I've never had beef makhini before but i will be getting it again in the future. They do a really fun celebration for birthdays and every one from the owner to the waitress were so lovely. Do yourself a favor and go here.

Came back to write again how much I love it here! The service is always 100% and so is the food. Highly recommend! They are always busy so you might want to call for reservations.

Where do I start first wait staff is very well versed in menu gives great recommendations. From the first person that greats you at the door everyone makes you feel like you are part of their families. Food is best cooked with lots of love !

STILL BLOWN AWAY BY THIS FOOD. If I'm ever craving any Indian type Asian fusion cuisine, I will run here. I came here alone for lunch and couldn't decide what to get so I ordered 2 appetizers and 2 main dishes, way more than I can eat but I loved that I got to try different things and have leftovers now! I got the chicken entree which was two dish of choice with rice or naan. I chose chicken korma and tikka masala with rice - ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. It also came with this spiced rice pudding type dessert, omg so good. I also got the mixed protein noodles, think of an Indian spiced I lo mein, delicioussss. And my appetizers I got vegetable pakoda (some mixed veggie potato curry fried fritter) and sha phaley (some circle empanada type thing with meat that's Indian/Asian flavors), both came with special dipping sauce - UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. this is our goto for take out and everytime has been perfect. we also love dining in there. the service is always phenomenal. food has been great every single time. sometimes though the spice level was toned down too much. we often get korma and makini. you can't go wrong with anything here
