Medellín Was Named the Best City for Urban Green Space

"An ecological preserve that serves as a protected natural area with forested trails and reserve-style nature experiences easily reachable from the urban area; as part of the wider greening push, it offers a conservation-focused escape that improves local air quality and provides opportunities for outdoor education and recreation." - Opheli Garcia Lawler

"Medellín’s urban renewal, following decades as one of the world’s murder capitals, has drawn international attention. Perhaps nothing symbolizes the revival more than the Metrocable, a system of cable cars that connect the city center to steep hillside neighborhoods that were once reckoned to be the city’s most dangerous. Grab a ride on Line K up to Santo Domingo and treat yourself to spectacular views. Once on the ground again, take a short wander around the neighborhood for a taste of the real Medellín and its friendly residents (known as Paisas), and see the small shops and the beautiful library whose original benefactor was the government of Spain . From Santo Domingo, another cable car continues to Parque Arví, an expansive nature reserve and weekend escape favored by overheated locals. By Travesías"

14 Things to Do (and 1 Not to Do) in Medellin (Updated 2025)

"A mountain park reachable by a beautiful gondola ride straight from the subway, Parque Arví spans about 16,000 hectares with trails that date back over 1,500 years; at the entrance there’s a small market of local vendors and mostly easy hikes, admission is free, and guided tours cost 60,000 COP (in Spanish only)." - Matthew Kepnes

It was such a unique experience going to Parque Arví. I enjoyed the 30 minute cable ride and all of the views. Once arriving at the park, there’s a cute area with a bunch of vendors and handmade crafts. I went with a friend, and we sat at the café and drank coffee. I was kind of expecting there to be more of an actual walking trail or something like that. Maybe there is and I just didn’t see it. I think it’s a nice place to go and a lot of people enjoy it, but I thought there was going to be a little bit more nature to experience. But again it might’ve just been that I didn’t know exactly where to go. It was still lovely and the cable ride was a big part of the experience.

Parque Arvi is a great place to go, you can get there using the Metro and then the Metro Cable, you'll have to pay for the last part of the ride because it is only for getting to the Park. It's natural, there are little streams, forest, places to picnic, we took an electric bicycle tour with a great guide called Julian, very much into nature and the park itself, he explained a lot of things making it very cool.

I imagine there are lots of different experiences you can have here. We (family with 8 and 11 year old) did a 7.2 km free (unguided) hike. The trails were decently maintained, but completely unmarked. Warning: download a trail map like All Trails or something. We alternated between conifer forest and jungle-y forest. There were no views, and the half of the time we were in the jungle-y part, it came to be a bit oppressive and claustrophobic (though we did take a short cut about halfway through, but the main trail could be like that too). Overall interesting experience--getting there cable car was easy (but about $30 each way for 4 of us)-- and it was an interesting hike. Not for the faint of heart or someone without a steady map app, but also not a difficult hike for anyone who can walk 4 miles. Don't do it alone. We went on a Tuesday and did not see one other person on the actual hike, though there were hundreds at the center. No one seemed like they were there to hike.

Was a great place to hike. You can take the metro station to this place and then a cable car up to the park itself. You have to pay to hike the loop. However, if you just want to hang out, enjoy nature, and walk around up there you can. You can also enjoy the food and small businesses selling their products. Reguardless what you are up there for, it's worth it.

What a gem to see when you visit Medellin. It’s a very large park and most of it can only be seen by bus, bike, motorbike or car. However, the gondola ride up has amazing views of the city and valley and their are a few walking paths close to the gondola station, which you pay to enter. There are lots of birds, trees and plants to see and many food and drink vendors. You can also hire a guide or rent a horse. I highly recommend it.

Parque Arví is a natural gem in the mountains of Medellín. It’s the perfect place to disconnect from the city’s noise and reconnect with nature. You can get there by cable car, which is already an amazing experience with stunning views. There are eco-trails, local guides, farmer’s markets, and a magical vibe. Perfect for hiking, breathing fresh air, and enjoying a unique day out!

The cable car is superb with excellent views across Medellin and Arvi Park. When in the park, the tours are very interesting with a lot to see. Plenty of stalls offering food and drink at the start which are very good value.
