Chrysler Museum of Art

The Chrysler Museum of Art is such a great surprise — even if you think you’re “not really a museum person,” this place just works. It’s easy to walk, not stuffy at all, and the mix of art is way more interesting than you’d expect. One minute you’re looking at ancient pieces, the next it’s classic paintings, modern art, or the amazing glass work they’re known for. Everything feels relaxed and well thought out. The galleries are clean, well lit, and not overwhelming, so you can actually enjoy what you’re seeing instead of feeling rushed or overloaded. The staff is friendly and helpful without hovering, which is always appreciated. And honestly, the fact that it’s free makes it even better. It’s perfect for a casual afternoon, a date, or just wandering around when you want to do something different. If you’re in Norfolk or the surrounding area, it’s absolutely worth stopping by. Easy, enjoyable, and way better than you might expect.

This museum is one of my favorite places in Hampton Roads, and I love bringing out of town guests to check out the ever changing rotation of exhibits. It feels fabulous when you arrive and a friendly staff member opens the door and greets you (and they'll hold the door when you leave as well). There are so many enrichment events throughout the week as well, most recently my husband and I attended a morning meditation in the gallery. It was amazing to sit and go through a guided meditation based on one of the paintings in the modern art gallery.

The Chrysler Museum is truly a hidden gem. It may be on the smaller side, but the collection is surprisingly diverse—ranging from stunning glasswork and classical pieces to thought-provoking contemporary art. The layout is easy to navigate, and every gallery feels thoughtfully curated. It’s the kind of place where you can spend an hour or an afternoon and still walk away feeling enriched. Be sure to stop by Zinnia while you’re there. It’s the perfect spot for lunch—fresh, flavorful food, a relaxing atmosphere, and a great way to round out your visit. Highly recommend both the museum and the café for a lovely, low-key day out.

I've loved this museum since I was a kid living in Norfolk and now enjoy sharing it with my granddaughters. The new Perry Glass studio is the crown jewel of this magnificent museum! Plan your visit around attending one of the glass blowing demos that happen daily at noon. Before Covid, they used to hold wonderful jazz music events after hours in the main building. Many of the events and activities are finally coming back. Be sure to check the events and activities page for their many offerings. Zinnia Cafe has amazing food! Expect a bit of a wait if you visit at lunch time. It's a popular spot for locals and visitors. Surprisingly, this museum is kid friendly even with an emphasis on glass. There's a large, interactive children's exhibit near the entrance that my granddaughters adore. There's also a summer camp program. One of the best parts of visiting the Chrysler is that parking and entry is free!

Perfect wedding venue! Laid out well and engaging. Super staff. Only has a couple Tiffany pieces, so if you want to see Tiffany the Morse Museum in Winter Park, FL is a must. Highly recommend the Chrysler.

Met some friends here last Saturday. There was live Christmas music throughout the day. We opted for a tour with a docent. She was very knowledgeable and gave us highlights of the second floor. We all plan of coming back to go through at a leisurely pace to really take it all in.

Incredible experience. Completely free to visit and view ORIGINAL HISTORICAL ART. I cried many, many times. It was such a special, emotional experience. This was my first time having the opportunity to visit an art museum, and I was absolutely amazed. The staff was very kind, they open the door for you upon arrival and exit. They ask for your zip code at check-in, and give you a visitors guide. The staff are very helpful in answering questions as well. They have a beautiful piano played by some of the most memorable names in classical music, and we asked if someone could play it. They informed us that they have professional pianists come to play it to keep it in good condition. We are looking forward to coming back at a time when we can hear it.

It is a small museum, but it has fantastic exhibitions on European medieval paintings, Asian collections, and artifacts from the ancient Inca civilization. One highlight is the glassware, which was made over two thousand years ago and even bears the maker’s name—something extremely rare.

Chrysler Museum of Art.....a wonderful place where you can check out exhibitions that are impressive. I've been here for years where I have yet to leave disappointed. You can never go wrong with exhibitions that leave you deep in thought. I came here right before heading to the nearby Scope Arena for a Yelp event after work. Let's see how the visit went. The new exhibtion is on Susan Watkins and women artists during the progressive era. Like many exhibitions before, this one was well put together from the staff. It even connects Hampton Roads towards the end of the exhibition. Once you see pictures posted, you can tell they have been presevered throughout their history. There's also a photograph exhibit on Mexico which is wonderful. And I also did a brief tour of the glass studio which showed some brilliant exhibits as well. Do visit here when you get a chance. And remember, admission is free :)

The Chrysler Museum is such a gem!! This is a free museum with a free parking lot. It's all about accessibility to the arts. Their collections are varied so everyone should find art to enjoy. They have one of the largest glass collections in the nation, as well as a glass blowing studio across the street. They display Impressionists paintings, baroque, renaissance, folk, and many other types. They also have Egyptian and African artifacts. We have seen two special exhibitions here: Photos of the Beatles last year and the paintings of Susan Watkins and her contemporaries, which is currently on display for a while. The museum has reciprocity with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts up in Richmond. While Chrysler is a free museum, you can get 10% off food and gift shop purchases as a VMFA member. That's a nice benefit! While visiting the museum, stop in the Zinnia cafe and the gift shop. Both are worth your time.

Free admission and rotating exhibits, what more could you ask for? Find an afternoon to stroll the museum and enjoy the sweet life gazing at Tiffany Glass or modern art. Find the photography wing or go back to Roman times, there is something for everyone. Play my favorite game, Ugly Baby...find the ugliest baby in the exhibits...it's a silly fun scavenger hunt to play with friends.

This review is specifically for their Ignite Adult Night at the Museum. We were invited by a vendor and decided to experience the Museum after hours. Such a cool way to enjoy the Museum in a non traditional way. The event included Live Music, Dance Lessons, access to galleries. It was amazing to see the Museum come alive at night. As this is a quarterly event I believe we have attended a few. The most recent being in a newly built building for the Museum. Chrysler has free admission, great for families and monthly events and classes. An excellent addition to the Neon District.

I love that my polling site is at the Chrysler Museum of Art. I lime scootered to the polls for free because lime has free rides to the polls on Election Day. There were no lines at the polls and I was in and out in 5 minutes or less. It is always a breeze at my voting site.

Some of the best things in life are free. Exhibit A: Chrysler Museum of Art. Do not sleep on this exemplary museum, housed in the most stunning building! They have exciting collections, including displays of artifacts from the Near East and Asia. I was entranced by a samurai armor and Tang Dynasty sculptures, among many other items on display. I also loved their collection of stained glass from the late 19th and early 20th century. The special exhibit on indigenous glass art was moving and beautiful. I appreciated the well-written labels throughout the museum spaces-- helping bring more depth to the deeply personal works of art before you. They also have this lovely wall where guests can draw or write about "why they visited" the museum. Museum staff that greet you upon entry are very welcoming and helpful. They also make for an inviting experience with well maintained facilities for visitors and a great gift shop. I'm adding this museum to my list of favorites, which also includes the Cleveland Museum of Art and Cummer Museum, to name a few.

This is a stunning, diverse museum. I enjoyed viewing for hours! What a luxury and privilege to be able to view these works. Thank you for those who donate to share this with everyone.

This place is nice for a quick trip to kill a hour or two. The museum was beautiful, the art work was amazing. They have activities & events on certain days,m. My only complaint was the smell from the river across from the museum. It had a strong sludge stench. You can literally taste it in the air, Overall it was a good experience. If you're ever in the area it's a unique stop for sure.

Love this museum! The glass blowing building was great! The show was so cool and learned lots. It was longer than expected and I can't believe they made a whole piece in front of us. The main building had great exhibits and the glass collection was super cool. They had a great baggage check and the people were very nice.

Second time at the museum was a delight. This time it was over holiday 2024 where the museum was beautifully decorated, a giant Christmas "tree" of poinsettias towering in the grand lobby. This time my beau and I enjoyed Renaissance and American art display.

Great museum in Norfolk! Huge collection of art from many eras, many genres. Family activities like children's classes. A glass studio with presentations on glass blowing. I took my grandchild 6 yrs old and the presentation kept her interest but I wish we would have entered the room early for a good front seat. Our view line wasn't the greatest.

The Chrysler museum of art is a true gem nestled in Norfolk. With its impressive collection, stunning architect, free admission. It is a must visit for a casual explorer or an art enthusiast. If you can please consider making a donation. They host temporary exhibits as well as events. The glass collection is amazing. There is the cafe, the zinnia Cafe that is attached with them. The museum was okay but... there was a woman that worked for the museum always following me (I was with my family) she kept radioing in where I was too. Perhaps it's the color of my skin or whatever but I didn't like it... and I felt like it was just me she was looking into. I'll look around and find her glaring at me. Honestly, in this day and age, last thing I want is trouble. But overall my family had a good time, it's just me.... I'm so aware of my surroundings as a veteran military member. Thought I'd share my concerns for the next person... have a good one.

I love coming here. This time (March, 2024), I came to see Paul McCartney's photos on display. I love that this museum is free and open to the public, making art much more accessible to anyone and everyone. I've been to a wedding here, and it was beautiful. I've been apart of volunteering for kids' art classes, and it was magnificent. I've accompanied children on a field trip here, and they were great with the kids. I love this place. If you want something free/donation-based to do in the 7-5, this is a great spot to just mill around in.

Have lived here for almost 4 years and finally made it today. The museum is overall- Amazing! Starting with the sculpture outside and the wonderful volunteers that open the door for you! Everyone there is very welcoming and friendly. There are few places like this you can go for FREE!! (They do ask for a donation and I did give one- seems most people do as this is how they keep this open!) There is a lot to see so you need to plan atleast an hour plus to walk around. They have a small cafe that serves coffees, sandwiches and grab and go foods. Plus a small gift shop with some very unique gifts and memorable. If you're interested in art classes or glass blowing they offer classes for all ages plus a summer program for young kids. I truly recommend!

Wonderful free museum! Had a great time wandering around and enjoying pairings, sculptures, ceramics, and even historic pottery. I will definitely be back!

What a fun day! This museum does not disappoint. I enjoyed it so much that I'm going to become a member. We went during the Paul McCartney exhibit. This is an amazing and interactive exhibit where you get to hear his thoughts on the pictures. I loved the glass gallery, it's just absolutely beautiful. My other favorites were WowMom and All the Flowers Are For Me. So many amazing things to look at here, I will definitely be back. We were here for 3 hours and didn't get through everything.

Beautiful artwork but.....odd. The Chrysler Museum of Art used to be some place you could take a date, go hear a classical music concert or take a workshop, feel safe and know that the works of Picasso and Renoir were taken serious and valued. When I went to the Chrysler years ago you paid to get in, there'd be someone playing a harp in the courtyard area, classes and workshops in a theatre, security guards politely recognized members of the public and were noticable by wearing cleanly pressed business suit uniforms. You paid to get it but did so proudly as a night on the town before or after a dinner date. Now, security is gone, replaced by teenage customer serivce representatives who are oddly all teen white girls or one or two unshaven sloppy young white teen males with bellies hanging out from too-small t-shirts. Cameras loom overhead but gone are the days world-renowned paintings are guarded by actual guards and the "Museum" feels more like an informal, casual art exhibit or second-rate art gallery than a world-class art museum. If you wanted to rub your hands on a Renoir, a camera might capture the video but odds are no guard would be anywhere nearby to caution you away. The lack of diversity in staffing is striking as well. There are literally no people of color in the gift shop, at the information desk, in the "customer service" / mock security staff when I visited and no mock security staff over the age of 25 were visible. Classism, a clear caste system, all were in place in my estimation. The collection is still great but gone is the care to presenting the museum as an inclusive, diversely-staffed institution that values and protects its masterpieces of art.

A beautiful art museum that also hosts fun events. I have been here multiple times over the years to view different art displays and attend events. We most recently attended the Ignite: Fandamania event and checked out the Paul McCartney photo exhibit. Admission to the museum is free and so is parking. For evening events, parking can get a little tricky and side street parking is permit controlled so be sure to read the posted street signs. The museum itself as well as the grounds are beautiful.

What a spectacular Museum this is something for everyone wish we would have had more time to take in a demo at the Glass gallery next door. Super clean and well worth the time. Thanks

I love visiting the Chrysler Museum of Art for any new exhibits when we are visiting the area. They always have free admission and free parking, which is a huge bonus! Permanent exhibits include decorative arts, photography, glass, American/contemporary/modern/European art, and ancient pieces. They also have various activities and programs for kids, families, teachers, and students. If you didn't want to do a self-guided tour, there are group tours available where you can join in and get the full experience. The staff here are super friendly, and the museum is clean and well-maintained. +rotating exhibits +friendly staff +free admission and parking!

I have to tell you, it wasn't my intention to visit here, it was a backup plan. I'm glad that my initial intention fell through. The best part about this one is that it is absolutely free from parking to admission. I was not sure what I was in store for when I came in here because I have never heard of this museum prior to my visit. Walking in here you are greeted warmly and given direction on how to go about this place. All I can tell you is take the suggestion and then proceed to go around here however you feel. Where I can tell you to take a lot of time is the glass exhibit. They have the largest collection of glass and some of the pieces that are on display are pretty spectacular. You can spend hours in here alone if you don't watch the time. Don't miss the rooms that focus on a specific art from a region around the world. The way they put together the exhibits tells a story that keeps your attention until you go to the next section. As for the paintings and sculptures, definitely take your time here as well. They have a great mix of art throughout time in here. One of my favorite sections was the modern and contemporary section. It was refreshing to see modern settings depicted on giant canvases. Makes you appreciate the time it takes to create a masterpiece. One thing that can be overlooked here is the building itself. It is a piece of art unto itself. The way they used the building to not only display the artwork, but to incorporate more art into the building was amazing. My favorite was the overlooks of the lobby area, really gives you a different perspective on the art of display.

I had an amazing time at Chrysler Museum! Greeted by friendly staff who kindly held the door open ( very helpful it was a rainy day) as I walked in. Beautiful art from all times. My favorite were the paintings in the second floor, Egyptian and the Mayan art exhibit. So cool , it helped me visualize and almost transport back in time . Place was clean and organized. Lots of Museum staff to answer questions. Helpful that there were tons of bathrooms, water, a place to eat made it easy to take our time and practically spend the entire day at Chrysler. Parking was so easy. I love everything about the location, space, opportunities to enjoy art, food , and shopping. Overall excellent time !

Full disclosure, I had no idea this place existed. Travel down to the Chrysler to see the Eye in the Storm exhibit. Easy check in at the desk. Nicely laid out exhibit. Easy to follow the time line. Bonus exhibit was the Venetian glass exhibit in the sprawling glass section of this museum. They have a lovely cafe and a nice gift shop with an artomatic machine. Plenty of parking around the museum.

Very nice place to visit as a family or on your own! Always enjoy coming here and seeing the artwork.

Chrysler Museum of Art is by far one of my favorite art museum in the US! And this is coming from someone who lives near the Smithsonian in DC and have gone to all the other good ones in NYC. The ushers are so friendly and welcoming. The parking is free and easy. The garden close to the entrance/ parking lot is absolutely gorgeous. The exhibits were fantastic. I went two days in a row just to gawk at Escher's Devil's Picnic amongst all my other favorite pieces by him. The gift shop had Escher items that aren't commonly available. I love the bag and the glasses case I purchased. In all, I hope to return again in the future!

I was redirected to this site largely because of weather, and frankly, I wasn't expecting it. Of all the cities I visit, I can't recall thinking to myself "better check out that Norfolk VA high-end cultural scene some more". But here lies a most impressive museum, on the edge of the water and a historic neighborhood adjoining the medical complex. It nonetheless has abundant free parking, with not so much as a gate. Apparently, it's used as a polling site for Virginia voters. When I entered, they just asked me for my zip code and told me to keep my bag in front of me, and I was off. A special exhibition when I visited had some majestic explorations of Pacific Northwest Native American mythology, and that led me into an impressive (and graphic) Mesoamerican exhibition. The diversity of the collection included various African and Asian pieces as well, giving the visitor a nice tour of the world before going upstairs and settling into Modern Art and Americana. Admittedly, some of the modern art kind of sucked (or perhaps I just lack the sophistication to appreciate it), and there were some instances of trying to shove contemporary art in between more classical pieces that might have meant something intellectually but just didn't work aesthetically, but overall it was an exciting and thought-provoking collection. An entire wing of glasswork was too large to really get through, evidencing the fact that this place was worth more than the hour and a half or so I put into it. And it's free and open to all. What more can one ask for?

I decided to visit the museum today because it is free admission. This is my first time visiting since the pandemic. Some of my favorite pieces are still there. The restaurant inside had just opened and lunch had not started yet. I was able to get two small croissants and coffee. The croissants were really good.

This is an amazing museum with Parking! My daughter took me for Mother's Day . It was a wonderful experience and I cannot wait to go back again. There are many interesting things you would think you were in DC or Berlin very impressive museum.

This is a good alternative when the weather foils your outdoor plans. A friend of mine and I ventured throughout the museum. We were admiring the various exhibits with multiple mediums ranging from glass, fabric to ancient artifacts curated over 100 years ago down to modern art. I am not an expert on art nor claim to be. But I have my favorite pieces which tend to lean towards the contemporary. Most of the traditional and glass pieces tend to be located on the first floor, while the more contemporary and renaissance paintings tend to be upstairs. There are museum staff in blue collared shirts to ensure visitors are being respectful of the art and to answer any questions. They do have elevators, so they are wheelchair and stroller accessible. While there were visitors there with small children ( probably 7-9 years old and younger), I personally wouldn't recommend taking them through the glass exhibits. These kids were running around and quite loud. You know, kids just being kids. While it's awesome to expose kids at a young age to art, I would take serious consideration as to whether they can conduct themselves appropriately before taking them around such fragile pieces. That, or prepare them on the expected behavior PRIOR to bringing very young children here. I understand they have had exhibits in the past that catered to the young children in the past. Also, they do have a backpack policy. While I had a day pack, they did inform me about the concern for it to possibly knock into the exhibits. I was able to just swing it to the front so that this potential harm was no longer a possibility. I would plan for easily an hour to two hours for a visit dependent upon your interests.

Upon entry it was 3 of us, 2 white women's and 1 black. In no way am I claiming prejudice but we had to leave our pocketbooks and my water at coat check-in. The museum is a gorgeous place to visit and a great place for learning, but as we traveled through the museum we saw people that had bags and water with them. We were told it's a size limit for bags but 1 person in my party didn't have a large bag, we saw people who had bags just as large as hers. I don't remember seeing on their website about bag limit or beverages. A staff member said it's only backpacks are required to be checked and suggested for other items.

This museum is free to the public! The glass studio is fantastic! The cafe staff are friendly. Chrysler is such a fantastic asset to the community. They have many themed events (some free, some not) but all well worth it!!! Love the glass studio events at night with glass blowing demos and live music!

I took a 4 year old. Bad move. They do have a small kids' section, but it wasn't enough to make this rainy day option work for my kiddos. I, however, love this museum!

Beautiful museum so many great exhibits. The museum is very beautiful the building inside and out. I love the glass museum. I definitely plan on going back.

This museum ROCKS!! I love coming here. I have been a few times, and I'm NEVER disappointed . I have here for their special night time event "IGNITE". These events they have are only a few times a year, every three months or so. I really enjoy the artwork and displays they have and the special classes. For the ignite event, they had a drag show, salsa/bachatha lessons and PUSH COMEDY was there with a game show. Thry also have the music going in the main are of the museum and the dj is always hype. The food/appetizers and drink they have are ok and are a bit pricey but you are not here for that. This place transforms itself each time I come and I am always blown away by their efforts. The events are always from 7pm-10pm so if you don't like staying out late this is the place for you. They are having a Julyoween event in July, kinda like a Halloween party and I will be there for it and I'm so excited. I forgot to mention in the day time the museum is free to walk around and look at the artwork. Nice if you are low on funds but still want to partake in the art. I freaking LOVE this place.

Great way to spend a lazy afternoon there was so much to see and everything was laid out beautifully. I enjoyed this museum and the artwork they had on display.

We visited the Chrysler Museum in June 2022 with friends. What a great experience. The museum has a large permanent collection as well as temporary exhibits. I particularly enjoyed the MC Escher exhibit that they had on display while we were there. The museum also has a working glass studio where you can watch demonstrations and also take glass blowing and other glass making classes. The glass blowing demonstration that we watched was very interesting and informative. Unfortunately the artist doing the demonstration ended up failing with the item that she was making and it all turned into a melted mess. But thus is the creative process, sometimes it works and other times you don't get the result that you wanted. We spent most of the day in the museum and we didn't see everything. They have a collection of glassware that is especially interesting to explore - continuing the theme of glassware from the on premise glass studio. The collection of Tiffany glassware and windows was especially nice. I recommend a visit to this museum if you are an art lover or glassware lover or collector. The museum is entirely free of charge. That is everything - the museum is free of charge, the glass blowing demos are free of charge to watch, the parking is free. You do have to pay and schedule a time if you want to actually take the glass studio classes. But otherwise this amazing museum is free of charge to visit. What a deal. They do accept donations if you are so inclined. The museum is very clean. The bathrooms are clean. The staff was friendly and personable. I highly recommend a visit to the Chrysler Museum. And just to clarify, this museum is not a car museum even though the name is Chrysler. The name is due to the fact that the Chrysler family donated their extensive art collection as well as funding for this museum. Great experience.

Such a great place with amazing artwork! So full of history from all different time periods as well as cultures. Great spot for all art/history lovers. Plus it's free!

This museum is free!! It's an awesome art museum, and what I love most about it is they are constantly updating their collections so can come back multiple times. They also have a lot of events, so check their website to see what they have going on this month. Highly recommend!

It was my first time in Norfolk so I wanted to try out the Chrysler Museum. I was passing through on a road trip, so I only had about two hours there. If you're really into art, you could easily spend five hours here! They had an Etcher exhibition at the time I went. I thought it was very well curated. It gave a really comprehensive look at his artistic career and how his work expanded with experience. Chrysler is known for their glass collection, and it did not disappoint! Can't say I've ever really be interested in glass art before, but I still thought it was really cool. I feel like everyone can find at least five things in the exhibit that make them stop and just stare because it's so beautiful. I think my favorites were the stained glass pieces all the way in the back. They also have a lot of American and European art from the 1600s-1800s. Again, not really my thing but I appreciated it. I enjoyed the larger realistic landscape paintings. Finally, they have a contemporary art section. It's not huge, but it is still substantial. They have a Caulder and a Lichtenstein, as well as Frankenthaller and Wiley (but he is hidden!). At the time I went, they had an exhibition of a bunch of yads (I had no idea what it was prior to this exhibit). I thought it was really awesome how they did a modern take on a historical object and showed the hundreds of ways it could be altered and made beautiful. Overall, I liked it a lot. I definitely recommend! I would love to come back and spend more time here.

I've been to the Chrysler Museum a few times, but last month I finally got a chance to attend their Art After Dark event in the glass studio. WOW - what an experience! I didn't really know what to expect, but it was a fantastic show packed with education, stunts, and of course, glass blowing! I recently watched the Netflix show Blown Away, so I really enjoyed seeing and learning more about the glassblowing process. They also have tons of beautiful pieces on display from the artists and students in residence. If you haven't gone, I highly recommend it - tickets aren't expensive and it's a great way to spend an evening.

Add this to your itinerary for your visit to Norfolk! Former heir of one of the Big 3, Walter Chrysler jr., donated his collection in the 1970s expanding this art museums collections into automobile history. So it's a blend of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts through the world. It has a detailed ancient Egyptian exhibit and even some Frank Lloyd Wright originals.

Degas is here. My (almost) 2 year old was often mesmerized. Admission is free. Parking is abundant and also free. The staff is so kind, welcoming and knowledgeable. Those are just the first 5 stars. I'd literally give more if I could! I don't recall ever coming here as a child, so my only experience with art museums is the High in Atlanta, where the staff seemed pretentious and I felt out of place. That's the complete opposite of what I felt walking in this afternoon! They recommend reserving tickets online for a time slot as capacity is at 25%. Tickets are FREE! Anyone over age 3 must wear a mask. There is plentiful sanitizer and social distancing is enforced. Most of the time, we entered rooms that were empty so we certainly felt safe - covid wise. I also had NO clue how huge this place was inside. I got lost a couple of times and had to refer to the provided maps. The glass exhibits (next to Degas) were my favorite place to spend time. My daughter's favorite spot was any bench, but she did stare for minutes (this is like hours in toddler-time, folks) at a Thomas Cole masterpiece. I even feel more cultured saying things like "a so-and-so masterpiece." You can see the art on their site if you feel safer visiting virtually. They also have a bevvy of coloring pages and activities for littles on a table near the entrance. A perfect way to spend a half day. I'd love to return and linger longer with just my hubby soon!

We went to see the Paul McCarty photos and while those were excellent there were lots of other great collections to see. Highly recommend spending time here. And it's FREE.

An excellent collection, worth the long drive from DC, or anywhere else for that matter. While you're in Norfolk, the Hermitage is also worth the trip. You may need more than one or two days to do this museum justice.

I absolutely love this museum. In the 8 years we have lived here I just can't get enough. I always try to bring visiting friends and family because it is such a delight for me and I like to share my happy places with friends and family. My most recent visit was a two fold affair. One of our local Geocaching members was hosting an event and doubling as our docent. Having a guide really pays off. From our guide: "Chaos and Awe: Painting for the 21st Century" is a sweeping survey of contemporary art from international artists who explore an array of modern-day forces, including globalism, technology, and mass migration, which create overwhelming feelings of wonder and fear. The exhibition features 50 paintings and painting-inspired videos by 35 national and international artists and includes 7 intertwined themes: No Place, Shadows of History, Collisions, Interzone, Virtual Worlds, the Boundless, and Everything. These themes connect the history of the sublime from 18th century landscape painting and literature to contemporary society and the future. Contemporary art is not for everyone. I enjoy art of all kinds. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder and sometimes you have to open your mind and heart to new adventures or run the risk of become stale and one dimensional. The glass exhibits are my favorite, the cafe has some good food (albeit a tad overpriced but it is a museum after all and the Louvre gift shop was pricey too). I always hit the gift shop up for their 50% off table for good finds. Matter of fact, I don't think I've ever not bought something when I visit. The following pics are from the Chaos and Awe visit.
