Eat Like a Chef: Neil Perry’s Food Guide To Sydney

"A late-night favourite among chefs, it’s where we love the noodle dishes with abalone and crab." - Kenneth Goh

"Golden Century Seafood This two-level Cantonese palace—connected by an escalator—is lined with tanks of live fish, crustaceans, and bivalves, which the staff will stir-fry, steam, salt-and-pepper, and douse in XO sauce to your heart's delight. There are many reasons the Chinatown establishment is beloved among in-the-know locals and hospitality veterans, and they extend from the warm, welcoming service all the way through the exquisite live abalone sashimi, mud crab hot pot, and private reserve range of wines. For a Chinese food adventure, arrive late (this place is open until 4 a.m.) and order straight from the live tanks. At least, that’s what the rock stars, politicians, and CBD chefs just getting off work do."

I was absolutely blown away by the food – truly some of the best I’ve ever eaten. The dumplings in chilli oil are an absolute must-try, bursting with flavour and perfectly balanced. The salt and pepper beef melted in our mouths and left us speechless – I couldn’t believe how incredible it tasted. Honestly, every single dish placed in front of us was outstanding. This place is a gem, and I can’t wait to come back!

The XO pipis came with a fantastic sauce. The standout dish was the sweet and sour pork — beautifully crisp on the outside, tender inside, with a perfectly balanced tangy-sweet flavor. The M9 wagyu was underwhelming; I’m not sure which cut it was, but it lacked tenderness, and the sauce pairing felt off. The other two dishes left no real impression. The restroom was old, dirty, and well below the standard you’d expect from the restaurant. Service, however, was commendable — even during the busy rush, staff made sure to greet and check in on us.

Since this is located inside the Crown hotel in Barangaroo, and expectation is high for a 6-star hotel. We had yum cha lunch and though the food was good, it wasn't not 6-star level. The Chinese tea was also of average quality. The most disappointment was the low-quality tea pot and cup which are mostly used in other restaurant with prices much cheaper. It this place was not located inside a 6-star hotel, it would at least score a 4-star rating.

Had yumcha here, the room is certainly a major upgrade on the poshscale compared to the old Golden century. Sadly service remains about the same, not great. Certainly expected more of the crown location there. For the food. The abalone tart is amazing, if I ever return it would just be for that. Everything else was decent, but quite overpriced for the same thing at a normal yumcha place would be 30% cheaper or more. Overall, its ok, worth a visit if you expect to pay the extra dollars for the crown location.

Abalone is my preference. Lobster was good. Down side is the price. Because if you go to an Asian country, you can expect a bill of about $150 total with drinks for the same amount of food you get over here! (

We've heard a lot about the famous Golden Century so we had to check it out. Located in the Crown, we had high expectations - it was good, but not "wow". By all accounts, food tasted good. Make sure to try the mapo tofu, siew mai, Szechuan chilli chicken and steamed fish. Peking duck was a mixed bag - the crispy skin with wrap was not good but the way they made the noodles after that with the rest of the duck was good. BBQ pork - too chewy, not good, skip it.

A nice Chinese restaurant with delicious food. Great location. Staff is friendly. Lots of food choice with seafood, meat and vegetables to suit different tastes. Service is good and we didn’t wait for long to have our dishes delivered.

Gone is the buzz and frenzy of a long awaited night at Golden Century replaced by a beautifully appointed decor (definitely cleaner no question) A+ for staff attitude, the service wasn’t on point far from it and they had better things to do like fold napery….to be replaced by a … very pricey Chinese restaurant- it was just another fancy restaurant without the service one would normally expect (Golden Century was always about two things the frenzy and food) and well the buzz and amazing energy is gone, it might be different in larger groups of say 15-20 but otherwise Sydney has so many amazing options where you don’t need to pay xxxxxxxx and deal with average service, anyway I will relish the memories and search for another Golden Century
