How DILL Put Iceland’s Cuisine on the Culinary Map

"Built in 1907 by the same architect who designed the National Theatre and Hallgrímskirkja church, Apotek is full of historical resonance. The Art Nouveau–style building was once the country’s largest edifice and served as the city’s primary pharmacy from 1930 to 1999, a distinction that gave the hotel its name when it opened in 2014. The property’s 45 rooms blendelements of the past while seamlessly incorporating modern design touches, employing neutral colors, parquet floors, and simple-but-refined furnishings to create a sense of calm; subway-tiled bathrooms with walk-in showers have a bright, clean look. You don’t have to wander far to enjoy one of the busiest watering holes in Reykjavik: Apotek Kitchen + Bar is a hot spot for artisan beverages, where cocktail “pharmacists” craft potions for every ailment. Bonus: Not only does it overlook the Austurvöllur park, it’s just around the corner from the Icelandic Punk Museum."

Apótek Hotel Reykjavík (Reykjavik, Iceland) 2 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Reykjavík’s Apótek Hotel occupies a distinctive building — it was designed in 1917 by Guðjón Samúelsson, who would later be famous for the city’s monumental, modernist Hallgrímskirkja church. Inside the Apotek are 45 rooms that blend century-old Art Nouveau architecture with contemporary design, all in service of a lively, modern boutique-hotel experience. This is a compact city already, and the Apótek is convenient to just about everything, set a block away from the parliament house at the west end of the city center. But there’s reason to stay in as well; the open-plan Apotek Kitchen + Bar incorporates an Argentine grill, and its bartenders dress in white pharmacists’ coats." - Tablet Hotels

Room was good, personel was kind. It seems to be an old building. the wodden floor in the room is not perfect, but since it is old it is okay. it was verry clean. Breakfast was extremely good and there was a big variety in the buffet. 10/10. The rooms were quiet and well sound insulated. it smelled good. hand soap, body wash, hair shampoo and conditioner was good. The fuse for the Lights went out once, staff was kind and helped fast. the hotel has no parking but the big city parking is like 6minutes to walk. The only negative point: the handle/ knob/ tab to turn on the water in the shower had no grip. my hands were full of conditioner and i could not turn the water back on... i had to get creative. i walked to the sink and grabbed a face wash towel to turn back on the shower.

As other reviews have stated this hotel and staff are awesome! Room was quiet, nice size, and comfortable!! The breakfast buffet was the best of all the other 6 different lodgings we had in the country. We rented a car and my only complaint would be finding parking in a strange city. If you didn't rent a car, kudos to you!! But the location is wonderful and within easy walking distance of most tourist sites. Would highly recommend.

This is a beautiful building and we really enjoyed our stay. The room was comfy and the big tele and powerful little stereo were a bonus. I'd have liked some coat hooks as there wasn't much room in the wardrobe.||The restaurant was busy every night we were there but we only sampled the breakfast, which was amazing - take your time, there's plenty to choose from!

Despite a very noisy first experience I decided to stay at this hotel again at the suggestion of the hotel manager who acknowledged the difficulty with my first stay. First the location is perfect for exploring Iceland. The bus stop is around the corner for tours. You can walk 15 minutes to BSI for the airport shuttle if you want to save a few dollars and are traveling light. The food hall is 1/2 a block away as well as numerous other restaurants. The Kronan grocery store is like 10 min away and there is a small fridge in the room for drinks, yogurt, etc. The hotel is extremely comfortable and has a beautiful bathroom and comfortable bed. Yes, it is downtown, and yes downtown RVK gets a little noisy Friday-Saturday nights. But on the other hand, Iceland is so quiet it was nice to hear some activity. I am pleased to see that the nightclub that was on the first floor doesn't appear active anymore so that limited the noise. The staff was friendly. The ability to use the Spa next door was a nice option (I believe it is complimentary if you book directly). There was an accident where a glass broke in our room and the cleaning staff was so friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay at this hotel again. I'm glad I gave it another chance. I appreciate management response to my prior concerns.

I always enjoy my stay at the Apotek. The staff are friendly, professional and knowledgeable. I always enjoy the breakfast as well. The rooms are great, the only thing I will flag is that due to the position of the desk it wasn't possible to full open the closet door to use the mirror until I moved the table. Other then that I have no complaints.

I received the corner room with a small window. The room and linens were clean but the room itself was rather small and there was a tight corner getting from one end of the room to the window. The mini fridge/closet cabinet is in a weird angle so there was only about 1-2 feet clearance between the bed and the cabinet. I had a hard time accessing the mini fridge because the outer door opened left and the inner door opened right (in order to make that tight corner work).||The bathroom size was good but the shower flooded the whole bathroom when used for more than 15 minutes. Poor drainage seems to be an issue in many hotels (even stateside). I think the only places I've seen decent drainage in the shower are lux Vegas hotels.||The staff was very friendly and professional. They offered parking advice and directions to the city hall underground structure. I believe it ended up being about $22.75 for 1 night. They were also able to accommodate an earlier check-in.||If you need sleep, bring ear plugs. Even with such a tiny window closed shut, there was still quite a bit of noise from the very vibrant Reykjavik night life outside. There were double windows and I made sure both inner and outer windows were shut tight. I had a flight check-in at 1:30am so I stayed up for that. The party was still going strong at that time. I was up for another 30 mins and since noise showed no sign of stopping I popped in ear plugs and went to sleep.||I think a newer building would probably provide better noise insulation but this seems to be a historic or vintage building (I'm sorry I have not read up on the history there). Beautiful hardwood floors and vintage charm just a little bit small.||The rug might be a bit of a trip hazard, it does not seem to be fully secured to the floor.

A welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff. Rooms brought to date but not entirely. The location very good but man, the parties last into the night in the Icelandic week-end. The hotel is in walking distance to all the downtown attractions. It was tough with parking and unloading the luggage since there is no area where you can stop the car for 5 min.

Don't think it classifies as 4 star, seen 3 star better. The location of this hotel was superb in the centre, lots of attractions and shops and restaurants nearby. Room was pretty average size, TV doesn't have smart features. The housekeeping was bit shoddy, they never replineshed tea or changed dirty mugs. Reception service was very good. Breakfast choices was good.
