Sample-McDougald House Preservation Society

Attended a local plant sale today was was able to tour the house. A true hidden gem in the heart of Pompano Beach, the Sample-McDougald House is an absolute treasure. From the moment you step onto the beautifully maintained grounds, you’re transported back in time. The historic home is impeccably preserved, and every room tells a fascinating story about early South Florida life. The architecture is stunning, the exhibits are thoughtfully curated, and the volunteers are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. You can truly feel the love and dedication that goes into maintaining this historic landmark. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful, enriching experience, this is a must-visit destination. It was charming, educational, and wonderfully inspiring.

Easy to visit and very knowledgeable and friendly guides. The woodwork in the house is amazing, everything beautifully kept - a nice peek into the history of two Florida families. (Google maps took us to an entrance with a closed gate, but there was an open one exactly opposite that on the property)

I was really disappointed with our experience at this mommy and me read-aloud. My son is almost two, and like most toddlers, he expresses excitement physically. During the event, the facilitator repeatedly and abruptly told him to stop stomping his feet. I explained that he was just excited, but she said it again and then instructed me to grab a chair and keep him on my lap. For an event meant for young children, the expectations felt unrealistic and not developmentally appropriate. Toddlers are naturally energetic, and I expected a more understanding and welcoming environment. Unfortunately, this did not feel like a truly kid-friendly space.

The tour was very interesting. We were the only ones there so it was like a private tour and our guide was very knowledgeable about the construction and history of the house. It was a good thing to do on a cloudy day.

I remember when this house was located on Dixie Highway and used as a homeless encampment. I drove past it every day and it was so sad to see it in it's decrepit state. Since then the house has been moved to it's new location and lovingly restored. It's picture perfect now. I visited recently when they were hosting their sixth annual classic car show. Our family has a 1915 Model T that was displayed. The house was built in 1916 making our car one year older than the house! A five dollar admission got you into the show and a home tour making for a fun afternoon. They had a food truck and DJ in addition to all of the cars on display. I always love to pay a visit to the house. On the ground floor there is a living room, dining room and kitchen complete with butlers pantry. The second floor houses a room they use for changing exhibits (on this occasion there was clothing worn by the Seminole nation), a child's room, and a bedroom with a wedding dress. The wood used in the house has been completely restored and it smells so good, like a natural pine air freshener. There are two gazebos on the grounds and the house makes a lovely back drop for the weddings held there. Also every October the Women's Rotary Club of Pompano hosts a haunted house. My daughter volunteered this year doing make up for them and it's always a popular event. There aren't too many historical gems in Pompano so this house is a real treasure. It's definitely worth a visit, even more so when they hold an event.

A hidden gem in Broward County. A beautiful historic home to visit especially during the Holiday season! Many original pieces of furniture too. One of my favs! They also do special events throughout the year and host weddings!
