I have been a Lemuria customer for all five decades of its existence even though I have lived 800 miles away for the past 35 years. I always go by the store when I return to Jackson to visit family members and friends or for professional reasons.
Lemuria has a large selection of first-edition books, most of them autographed. What’s more, they charge only retail prices for signed current books, not a higher amount. Older first editions sometimes do cost more, of course, but those prices still are quite competitive in the broader market.
They specialize also in books related to the South: memoirs, history (including an extensive selection of volumes on the civil rights movement), biographies, novels, poetry, Southern cookbooks, plus outstanding photograph books. What the shop does not have in stock, the employees move mountains to find for customers. Lemuria’s sections for children and youth are fantastic, too.
The owners also host special events featuring authors and other literary specialists to discuss and autograph books.
The staff members are outstanding in their friendliness, helpfulness, knowledge, and suggestions. What they do not have in stock, they move mountains to find for their customers.
Lemuria is the best bookstore I ever have visited among dozens in the U.S. and a good number in other countries, too. I heartily recommend shopping there in person, via the store’s website, or by phone. I believe you will not regret doing so.
