Baghdadi Jewish Community of Kolkata, India

"A long-established bakery founded by a Baghdadi Jewish family that has become a local institution, especially famous for its Christmas cakes. Its seasonal offerings draw long, interfaith lines—Hindus, Muslims, and Christians alike—while Muslim bakers traditionally prepare items for Christian holidays, illustrating Kolkata's unique tradition of religious and culinary interconnection. The shop stands as one of the everyday, living traces of the Baghdadi Jewish presence in the city." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"By the late 19th century, Calcutta was home to a sizable community of Baghdadi Jews who came to the thriving city in search of economic opportunities. Among them was Nahoum Israel Mordecai, who opened a confectionery inside the city’s historic Hogg Market (New Market to locals) in 1902. Only a fraction of the Jewish community remains in the city today, but 120 years on, Nahoum’s popularity is intact. Everything hearkens back to another era: antique teak furniture, huge glass display cases, the century-old cash register, and age-old recipes. The shop is best known for its classic macaroons, spicy rum balls, jam tarts, almond pastries, and — surprisingly — Christmas specials like mincemeat pies and rich fruitcakes. There are also other global Jewish specialties like challah and caraway-studded savory cookies called kaka." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

A local’s guide to eating in Kolkata, India - SilverKris

"A gritty, century-old Jewish bakery that retains original recipes and a vintage display style, beloved across the city for rich fruit cake, individually wrapped brownies, walnut cake and intense chocolate fudge. The bakery’s fruit cake becomes especially coveted at Christmas when queues swell, and the old-fashioned approach to baking is a major part of its charm." - SilverKris

I tried their signature cake, and it was moist, flavorful, and utterly divine. The service was warm and welcoming, making me feel like family. This famous bakery located right inside the New Market area has a large selection of pastries, bakes, cakes and sweets. We had gone there in the evening and the whole market was crowded and full of activities. The staff at Nahoum Confectionery were at the peak of their efficiency, catering to the needs of the customers. It is an interesting shop to visit in Kolkata.

Great spread of dessert and quite approachable helpful staff. Loved the lemon drop, almond biscuit with jam, rum ball and lemon tart. Just ensure you don't go too late or they may be out of a few things.

Most items were over by the time we visited (after 7pm, near closing time.) We bought Almond roll and brownie and they were great. Closed on Saturdays. Located inside new market. (We visited in November 2024)

The food quality was actually amazing! The heart cake was simple yet it amazed me so much. It was soft..fluffy and tasty! We had to wait outside as there was a line to enter the shop! It was Friday at 11 pm, still such a rush! The quality has been maintained! Definitely buy their garlic bread too!
