Wow....just...WOW. I could not be more impressed with my experience this evening at Molten Monkey. I am a -huge- Detroit pizza fan, and when I happen to stumble across Molten Monkey...well....I just had to try it. Here is my recipe for a great night at Molten Monkey. Rule 1. Take your time, this is a small, intimate establishment that values experience and taste over volume...respect that, and do yourself (and them) a favor by giving yourself time to experience their wonderful pizza. Rule 2. Talk to the people that have brought you the pizza. I came in on a Saturday night, the place was packed (and had -that- pizza smell...exactly what you want in a great pizza place), but I waited for a seat at the bar. Chatted up Heather (front of house maven) whilst I waited...then, by either luck, or his desire for me to stop bothering his front end manager, Otto, the "big cheese" owner started chatting with me as I bombarded him with annoying pizza questions...and once we started nerding out on what cheeses he used on his pizzas, it was over...3 hours later (and a sampling of both the "Not on the first date" and a "Heatonism BOT") I was pretty convinced that this was some of the best pizza in town! Rule 3. Be open to new things on pizza. This is not the place to go for your moms sausage mushroom and onion pizza. (don't get me wrong, I love a good SMO)...but this pizza is some of the most unique and tastiest in the land...LIVE A LITTLE!!! It's hard to find good Detroit style outside of D-town itself, but Otto, Heather, and Craig (the well seasoned barkeep in his own right) have knocked it out of the freaking park. Keep up the great work. I'll be back to sample some Monkey Styx and the rest of the menu.
