"Given the abundance of hotels in Siem Reap , it’s hard to imagine that when the Shinta Mani opened in 2003 there were few—if any—comparable boutique properties in town. It set the bar for those seeking a smaller-scale, personable, and indulgent experience, from the traditional Khmer decor to the cuisine. And like any great hotel, there comes a time for a change. Enter Bill Bensley, the Harvard-educated, Bangkok -based architect and landscape designer behind many of the world’s most arresting properties, who led a two-year total renovation of the place completed in 2012. Using cues from Angkor—columned passages, Buddhist shrines, maps and photos of the temples—Bensley dramatically transformed the Shinta Mani into a contemporary haven with a touch of whimsy, now called Shinta Mani Angkor(the larger Shinta ManiShack resort is across the road). Interiors use a stark palette—white subway-tiled floors and walls; heavy black armoires; charcoal-gray terrazzo partitions; stainless-steel light fixtures—offset by tangerine accents, in a nod to the orange-clad Buddhist monks who meander the temples’ time-worn sandstone structures. From the sugar palm tree–fringed black granite lap pool to the dangling daybeds where you’ll enjoy the decadent breakfast buffet, the Shinta Mani offers just the right mix of drama and comfort."

Shinta Mani Angkor, a Design Boutique Hotel Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia

"Guests at Shinta Mani Siem Reap enjoy lovely Khmer-inspired rooms while channelling funds to the local community. Designed by architect Bill Bensley, the boutique hotel is part of a community program that lets guests meet locals from rural Cambodia and help support the Shinta Mani Foundation. Free WiFi is provided throughout the property. Shinta Mani Hotel is a 5-minute walk from the Old Market and Pub Street. It is a 10-minute drive from Siem Reap Airport and the Angkor Wat temple complex. The rooms offer modern designs, city or pool views and each has a flat-screen cable TV. A safety deposit box and tea/coffee making facilities are also provided. The private bathroom offers toiletries, bathrobes, and slippers. The hotel houses a spa and an outdoor swimming pool. "Designed by Bill Bensley, this intimate resort of 10 exclusive villas showcases his fantastical luxury aesthetic: floor-to-ceiling windows, manicured gardens, plush rooftop living spaces and oversized lap pools. The villas blend elegance and comfort with black, white and gold accents, unique items from the designer’s personal art and antiques collection, and walls adorned with 3D carvings evoking the flowing robes of Jayavarman, the revered 12th-century Khmer king. Sleep quality is prioritized—Bensley personally selected each bed and blackout drape—and guests receive personalised service from the dedicated “Bensley Butlers,” who facilitate a seamless arrival via a tucked-away entrance (including skipping Immigration queues) and can arrange sunset Angkor tours or romantic dinners atop villas. Guests also have access to facilities at nearby Shinta Mani properties—two pools, the Khmer-inspired restaurants Kroya and Baitong, the ultra-chic Bensley’s Bar, and the Shinta Mani Spa.
