On the Grid : Keeneland

"There’s more to horse racing than the Kentucky Derby. If you’re lucky enough to be here during the two months out of the year in Fall and Spring when the races are running you can head to the track to bet on some the best thoroughbred racing in the world, eat Kentucky burgoo, and people watch. No matter what time of year, the stunning and historic track is worth a visit. Get up early to watch some of the most impressive thoroughbreds in racing get in their morning workout - it’s free and open to the public year round. No big hats required." - Bullhorn

Awesome place to visit! You can visit the track for free every morning to view the morning workouts until 10am! Absolutely beautiful track and grounds. You are also able to walk throughout the grandstands and tour the property on your own. Very nice!

Awesome place for kids on saturdays in October! 8a-10a it’s FREE, watch the horses practice! Kids games, arts and crafts, fun giveaways, stickers, concessions, good place to relax, chill and enjoy the track! They have the headless horseman walking the concourse once during that time! The bathrooms are heated so it’s nice during the cold months October through march. YouTube: Taylor Grayson 33 headless horseman for video!

Fascinating tour and introduction to the world of horse racing. I had no idea as to the complexity and tradition behind this historical way of life. You can walk through on your own but I would not have gained the appreciation for all that goes into this organization had it not been for the tour and our gracious guide, Carol Sue.

What a fun day trip! Tips for visiting: 1. There are guys that will teach you how to read the program and how to make smart bets. 2. Wait to see the horses and the jockey before you bet. They will walk outside the betting area. Get a vibe for how they are doing today. 3. You can bet $1+ for any race. Bring cash. 4. They will ask you, what race, and what horse number, and how much your bet. Look at your ticket, to make sure they have you what you paid for. I trusted the person heard me correctly and it was the wrong horse. I was upset, but I also should have looked at my ticket. 5. You can bet for a horse to “Win” (1st place), or “show”1st, 2nd, or 3rd). I enjoyed betting to win on a long shot who looked good or had a solid name, and then bet on a horse with solid trainers/ owners and better odds to place. Find your own rhythm, but this was exciting to me and I won twice.

I loved having the opportunity to view of these beautiful horses exercising. They are awesome athletes that deserve huge respect. The facility is beautiful and our guide gave lots of great information and track history. Would definitely recommend.

Very interesting place. My daughter and I and two of my grandkids went to check out the place. We heard in the morning between 6-10 you can go watch the horses get exercised. We got to talk to a few of the people who worked there and even got to pet one of the horses. Learned several things about race horses. They find it hard to get weight on them since they are so active. The horses drink 15 gallons of water a day and eat at least 15 lbs of food a day. I loved watching them a lot and learned a lot. You have even have breakfast at the race track kitchen.

Bluegrass, Breakfast, and a $2 Bet 🍂 October in Lexington means crisp mornings, thundering hooves, and a whole lot of heart at Keeneland. Between Sunrise Trackside coffee and paddock tours, autograph signings with legends in silks, and Heroes Day tributes that hit you right in the chest—this month’s race meet is more than sport. It’s tradition, adrenaline, and community stitched into every stride. I’ve never gambled in my life, but I might just take the plunge and make a two-dollar bet. 😆 Lucky Shot’s got long odds and a name that feels like a dare. Planning my perfect Keeneland day: • ☕ Start with coffee and morning workouts at Sunrise Trackside • 🐎 Meet the horses in the paddock at 8:30 a.m. • ✍️ Grab a jockey autograph at the North Terrace • 🎖️ Salute our heroes on October 19 • 📱 Download the Race Day app for picks and replays • 💸 Maybe—just maybe—place that first bet The Breeders’ Cup is calling next fall, but October’s already galloping with magic. #KeenelandFallMeet #LexingtonKY #HorseRacingTradition #SunriseTrackside #HeroesDay #JockeyLife #BreedersCup2026 #LuckyShotBet #TwoDollarPlunge #BluegrassStrong #NeverGambledButMaybe #KeenelandVibes

This was a lot of fun. Keeneland is a great experience. We walked around the beautiful property. It was interesting to learn about betting on the horses. The staff were very friendly. It got really busy in the afternoon. Consider taking an Uber, the parking lot is a little crazy.
