A Must Try! The sushi was incredibly flavorful, every piece was a perfect balance of taste and texture. But what truly stood out was the hotpot sukiyaki, it's the kind of dish that makes you want to come back again and again. I also tried their new noodle soup menu, the flavor was unique and unlike anything i've had before. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

My go to sushi spot in Squirrel Hill. :) I've dined in and gotten take out for the last two or three years! I love trying new things on the menu. Current faves are the spicy tuna, Benny roll, and the pretty roll (in pics). Very sweet staff and great sushi.

my boyfriend and i had dinner here for our anniversary, and it was excellent. we got the boat for 2 and a specialty roll (don’t remember exactly what it was called), but everything was so fresh and yummy. we also got free matcha mochi afterwards and it was perfect. we’ll definitely be coming back :-)

We're always looking for new sushi places to try and this place was great. We arrived around 6 on a Friday night and were the only in house diners for about 10 minutes. They seem to get a ton of to-go orders. We ordered the Spicy Girl Roll, Queen Roll, Philly Roll, snd Scallop Roll. All were fresh and tasty but our favorite was the Queen with spicy crab and mango. We also shared the Tempura dinner, which was super crispy with a ton of veggies and 3 shrimp and served with some of the best rice we've ever eaten. The place quickly filled to capacity before we left. If you love fresh sushi, its a must ty.

The service was very polite and attentive once we ordered but was a little slow to start because they were very busy. But have patience because the food is great!!! Very casual setting that mostly serves students but it's worth the trip, the sushi chef is amazing and will come out and talk to you if you have questions. Try the mango shrimp sushi it is delicious and something you can't find anywhere else! * they also have hot foods and mochi!

This is a real gem in Pittsburgh. Fish has been exceptionally fresh every time I have come. Service is attentive and helpful. Some of the best sushi I’ve had in Pittsburgh.

The food was okay but it really depended on what you picked. We selected the lunch special of salad, miso soup, and two sushi rolls for $11. We picked a spicy California roll (good), spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and tune/avocado rolls. The spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls were mass produced for the lunch service and we decided after one bite that we didn’t love them. These two rolls (spicy tuna and spicy salmon) are the mushy fish that is mixed with the spicy seasoning. However, the good, the spicy California roll was better than just a regular California roll. It was seasoned well and while it uses imitation crab meat it was a nice tasting roll. The tuna/avocado roll was the best of them all and it was a nice fresh slice of tuna and had a nice avocado piece. We also had the Japanese chicken katsu curry bowl and it was really well balanced. It reminded me of my mother-in-laws Asian style curry and it was tasty. The flavors were on point and the cook on the chicken was just right. For a quick lunch it was good but not one of those places I would drive across town to visit. If you are in Squirrel Hill go grab some Japanese cuisine and have a nice time with your friends and family.

Was suggested to go there by my friend I was meeting for dinner. Apparently they had recently changed the menu to be more sushi forward which was fine with me but not as much for my dining companion. The food was ok but nothing special. It did throw me a bit to have sushi with lettuce in it. I definitely prefer cucumber as the green to be in sushi. While it fine for dinner they are unfortunately situated in sq hill between many other Asian options that I’d prefer.

This is a local spot in Pittsburgh and also one of the very few Asian spots in the city - super solid and delicious sushi rolls jampacked with flavor! The service was nice and friendly and very fast, the rolls were huge (and so was the menu). We got the Sexy Girl Roll, Sushi Sandwich, and the Pink Lady Roll and we LOVED everything! Everything is super saucy and flavorful, and while not authentic, really satisfied our sushi craving. My only small complaint is that the individual plates and cups don't seem the cleanest - our cups still had lip stains and the plates also had remnants of food from the previous dish. That wasn't the best, but we just ate directly from the main shareable plate with our disposable chopsticks.

Quick service, fresh and large rolls, and so many options to choose from! Easily walked in with a table of 6 and was seated right away. While I got a roll, my other friends got poke bowls and other apps and everyone loved their meal. Definitely try it out!

Local joint with extremely friendly service and fresh fish! We got the boat for 2 and you can see the thick cuts and large portions. I definitely recommend as a good spot!

Literally the best sushi I've ever had, I've never used yelp or reviewed anything ever but I went out of my way to do this because I'm still thinking about how good it was hours later. Great atmosphere as well, I loved the interior, and the food came out so quick. Everyone working was also very nice. Highly recommend.

Sushi was fabulous! Ordered delivery via GH. Had the yellowtail sashimi with jalapeño and the mixed sashimi with a side of rice. Amazingly fresh and the rice was easy to eat with the sushi! Flavor of the rice was good as well. Will be back and order again!

I was really craving sushi on a Monday night and so many places in Pittsburgh are closed on Mondays! Diners 2+1 saved the day for me. It was pretty empty when we arrived around 6pm. We ordered the maki #1 and dragon roll to share. I love a good dragon roll and this one did not disappoint. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I was not a huge fan of the salmon roll in the maki combo but the tuna and California rolls were good. Im glad I finally made it out to try this place! I will definitely come back. There is only street parking for those of you that get nervous about parking.

I am traveling. The reason I stopped in this place is because I saw it listed on Yelp's Top 100 Sushi Restaurants in the US. As of today's date (07.16.2024) it sits at #97. The ambiance is casual. You can roll in with your tank and shorts or hoodie and sweats. It looks like your typical quick service place on the inside - nothing fancy. They do have a carry out option or door dash BUT they do have a limited number of tables for dine in. The soup came out piping hot which was great! I really enjoyed the soup. The salad had lettuce and seaweed in it topped with a vinaigrette, I believe. I went with sushi options and the sushi was okay. It was passable and pleasant enough. I feel like this spot is in a good area and is definitely a nice option if you're passing through town with a craving for sushi. Several tables around me had the Sukiyaki which did look delicious, but I did not get to try it. If I ever return, that would definitely be something I tried instead of sushi!

I quite honestly adore this place. The food is amazing and the staff are great. I've noticed though that when I go in that there is an overwhelming smell of cleaning fluid that immediately gives me a headache. It's unfortunately like this every time I dine in. And the smell ends up making me so sick that I can't finish my food in the restaurant. Of course we as consumers want restaurants to be clean but if you're using overpowering chemicals that you can smell in the dining room, that's a little much. That said, I love everything else about this place. Just wish they'd get rid of the chemical smell.

Diners 2+1 has done a lot over the last year and became so much better. They have menu options that are hard to find elsewhere in town. I really enjoyed their sukiyaki and yakiniku. I've been craving both for a while and they're decently priced here. The portion sizes are also pretty big, with a variety of different meats and veggies. I don't think their sushi is as good though. Would recommend sukiyaki and yakiniku instead. Kudos to them for trying to bring new Asian cuisines to Pittsburgh and not being afraid to try new things. The setting is casual, but there's only limited tables for yakiniku right now. 不过微信群预约也超方便，老板回复也快。The service is also pretty good. I remember when they first started upgrading their menu starting with sukiyaki, the boss personally went around to each table to talk to the guests and ask for their opinions. Do we think it's reasonably priced, are the portions good, etc. I really appreciated that they took the time to curate their new menu items.

Went for lunch after seeing it on a yelp list. Fast friendly service. Three roll lunch special was spot on. Miso soup was extra umami and the salad was too big to finish.

Massive boat of sushi. $100 - lunch. Was good but could have fed five! We had some problem communicating with staff which led to the large order. I would go again!!

This was our first visit to the famed "Diners 2+1", a Top 100 sushi spot in the country according to one rating process (#97). Having eaten tons of sushi in Chicago and San Francisco for decades, bottom-line up-front (B.L.U.F.): it's good! Service was attentive, pleasant and accurate. Prices were reasonable and selections, while somewhat limited (they were out of crab Rangoon and some salmon dishes), were decent. Ambiance is a little lacking and could use a little (not much) "facelift"...unused cooking items should be stored out of sight. ***There is no liquor license, so no beer, wine, spirits and definitely no sake which would go very well with the tasty food!***. We will eat here again.

Yum! This is such a cute place for sushi in Squirrel Hill. We found street parking right across the street on a Wednesday evening but there is a paid parking lot under Carnegie Library you can use that's a short walk away if it's a busier day. I got the spicy california and the dragon roll and both were incredibly delicious and filling! The ingredients were all fresh and the rolls were some of the best I've had in the city. Our waitress was great as well

Sushi was okay. Not the best I've ever had, but not the worst. Ordered it for pick up, didn't eat in.

Another great sushi spot to add to my rotation especially in Sq Hill area. My personal favorite is the yummy roll. You could taste how fresh the cuts of sushi are.

I haven't been going to restaurants a lot lately, so it's been awhile since I've been to Diners 2+1, which I'd been to many times before. It's only gotten better. Chef Li just keeps raising his game. The seared Albacore had the thinnest sear line I've ever seen. The roasted red snapper was just done, so moist, and yet with a slight crispy crust. Of course, his fish is always the freshest. I love this place

I have been going here regularly for years now. The quality of the fish is as good, if not better, than any of the "high end" sushi spots in town. I have taken my family and introduced all my friends -- it is my first recommendation for anyone looking for a place to try. I don't leave many reviews but this place REALLY deserves it. They have super fast service, affordable (and high quality) meals, and very friendly staff.

I really enjoyed this casual sushi restaurant. I've been twice. Once we had the Japanese hot pot(Shabu Shabu) and another visit we had a bunch of sushi. Service was prompt, our order was taken immediately and food arrived quickly. The aesthetic of the restaurant is above average for a sushi place in Pittsburgh. Overall it's solid!

My wife and I stopped here for lunch. Sushi was excellent, some of the best I've ever had. Gyoza were very good too. Will definitely be back

I love these sushi/sashimi here at Diners 2+1! The sashimi is pretty spot on and you get a lot for the value. They also have a wide variety of specialty rolls and a la carte options. I usually only come for the sushi, but I will definitely be back to try the Japanese hot pot and bowls sometime! I love that it's a more casual sit down and the staff have been very kind every time we've visited. It's also nice that there always seem to be open tables for walk ins.

Random, small find in Squirrel Hill on a Saturday night. It really is a small restaurant, but the service was good. It got quite loud in there, but we didn't mind it. We stopped in for sushi and enjoyed every roll we had. My party of 5 ordered 7 sushi rolls, 2 house salads, salmon teriyaki, and gyoza. It was a lot of food for $125 (plus tip). They also gave us a free dessert - sesame balls - something different that we never had before. They were a little sweet and a little savory. All of the sushi was very fresh and flavorful. The rolls were put together nicely. A few things we found a bit odd - the water had no ice, they didn't offer forks (2 of my kids aren't great with chopsticks), no straws, and they put seaweed salad on top of the house salad. Despite that, the food was delicious and the service was great.

Pretty good casual sushi spot! The name is unfortunate as I almost didn't go here as I didn't realize at first it was a sushi restaurant given the unauthentic sounding name. Service was good. Rolls very good. Prices are somewhat high but on the other hand portions are generous ( one specialty roll with the soup and salad added on is a filling meal ). Overall, good choice for decent sushi when looking for a spot in the squirrel hill neighborhood.

While I'm not sure why the restaurant is called what it is called, this is a fairly good sushi restaurant. I have only been here for lunch and haven't tried too many of their specialty rolls, but I would say the basic rolls I have had for their lunch special are very good. I hadn't had an appetizer/side plate of tempura also in quite a long time, so I enjoyed it for all its worth on my last visit. It is a treat to have every once in awhile. I moved here from California, where sushi is more than abundant. This sushi spot fits the bill! :)

Went back here for takeout recently. On the plus side the experience was very convenient. You can order through the website, they have a text message system that helps track your order, and our food was ready right at the desired time (you can set a 15-minute pickup window ahead of time). As for the food, I had a similar feeling as last time. The sushi is good and we enjoyed our meal. But in the end we paid $50+ for about 36 pieces of sushi and a seaweed salad. It's not like we ordered fancy sushi either (we got two basic combos and a dragon roll). Well-over $1 per piece is just too much for a place that isn't overly fancy. The dragon roll was good though - shrimp tempura and avocado with eel layered on top of the roll.

Some of the best (and surprisingly affordable) sushi in Pittsburgh. Super lovely staff as well. If you're in Squirrel Hill, check it out!

I liked the salmon hand roll, the Nigeri Plate #A and the miso soup. Everything was good except they can add cucumbers or something on the handrolls. It was pretty plain just the rice and the salmon. This was the first sushi restaurant where the handroll was just too plain.

I've been here twice now. The quality of the ingredients is exquisite. The freshness is superb! The service is so polite. I think the server is also the owner. There seemed to be only two people working. He sometimes has a hard time understanding English, so please be patient and kind with him, he's so sweet and loves making recommendations. I lived in Hawaii for several years and so coming here, I knew I had to get the tuna poke bowl. I've tasted: The tuna poke bowl: flavor 4/5, so big! I am used to stirring my poke bowls, but this was so full of spring mix, I couldn't until after I'd eaten every component of the bowl separately, which is apparently the owner's intention! Dragon roll: flavor 5/5 the shrimp tempura in this is so fresh and perfect. I could eat this all year. Beef bowl: flavor 3/5. Just okay, my partner enjoyed it a lot and was full and satisfied. Sexy girl roll: flavor 3/5, tuna with jalapeño. Mango roll: flavor 4/5, the shrimp tempura in this is so fresh and perfect. I can't wait to come back here. I wanna bring all my dates here. ;)

Had some great takeout from here a while back for my birthday. Everything was super fresh and tasty. The process for takeout was relatively quick and you can place your order online which makes things easy. They have a good selection of rolls and other items on the menu so there is something for everyone. I would return in the future!

One of the best sushi places in Pittsburgh! We ordered the Beauty Alaska Roll, Benny Roll, and Philly Roll. They give generous portions of fish in every roll. My personal favorite was the Benny Roll, since it contained shrimp tempura and salmon, two of my favorite things. We asked for more ginger, which they did charge an extra dollar for :( The interior is clean with cool wallpapered walls depicting the streets of Japan. Service was prompt, and our food came out quickly. Come here for decently priced sushi that does not skimp on the fish. I've been many times and will be back again!

We're from Los Angeles and came here while visiting Pittsburgh for a weekend. Our friends recommended this place because it was delicious and comparable to LA sushi. I was a little reserved only because it's a landlocked sushi joint and it's supposed to live up to that statement? This place did not disappoint. Their selections were great and price is reasonable considering the travel the quality ingredients probably have to go through. I respect these kinds of restaurants and hope they get the recognition they deserve. Nice job, guys!

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. We get treated like kings every time we come here, they recognize us, and make recommendations to what they have fresh in that day. Their sushi might be "expensive" but the guys here 10000% know their craft, and make it worth every penny. Legit the only place I'll get sushi in Pittsburgh. Happy Eating!

If you live close enough ORDER FROM THE RESTAURANT WEBSITE! If you order for delivery from the restaurant's webpage, you'll save on the obnoxious service fee and other upcharges on UberEats. Also, I am not 100% sure but I think ordering from the site as opposed to UberEats/GrubHub ensures that the restaurant retains a bigger percentage of the transaction. I felt I received a fair amount of food for the price. I'll attach a photo. Delivered within 20 mins from when I ordered. I also appreciate that the hot soup was in a separate bag from the sushi. Overall tasted good. My only wish would be for dessert options to be made available for delivery. I am always paranoid that I may get sick when ordering from a new sushi place but I will be sure to update this post if I do get sick.

Decent poke bowls with a quick turnaround time. Kind of a strangely shaped place with a clean and quiet atmosphere. Not quite a place I would go on a nice date to, but I would stop by here for a quick lunch without hesitation if craving sushi. Fried dumplings were delicious appetizers here too! Overall - 7.8/10

We had the small sukiyaki special which was generous even split among 3, and it was one of the best things I've eaten in Pittsburgh. They bring out a cast iron pot over a burner, heaped full of veggies, mushrooms, and flavorful tofu. The broth is incredibly flavorful and gets more and more flavorful with every addition of meat. The servers were incredibly attentive and very sweet. Great for vegetarian and gluten free folks too as the meat and udon noodles are kept to the side and added separately

Okay. Yes, sushi. Pretty decent, better than Pittsburgh-standard, that was why we originally went there today; on a recommendation from someone else about sushi. Solidly decent and I'd recommend them over other places I've eaten here, for sure! However, aside from the menu shown on their website, we were given a grilled skewers menu (mostly in Chinese, but the "combos" are bilingual Chinese/English, so if you don't read Chinese, use that to cross-reference). We decided on a mix of nigiri, American rolls, and the BBQ combo B. First off, I hope if you order their BBQ you are not afraid of a little spice. I think these might be Szechuan in origin? Some of the skewers were a little too spicy for our toddler, but between the beef, lamb, chicken, and fishcake, they were all solidly tasty. I'm fine with some heat, so I thought the balance was just fine. Secondly, if you order sushi and BBQ, //eat the sushi first//. The skewers are strongly flavored with salt and spice, and will tend to overpower the sushi flavors. I think if you're ordering just BBQ, it's a good idea to also order some side dishes and rice, since you just get the skewers in the order (and B also comes with a plate of heavily garlicky roasted eggplant). As we had sushi rolls, that felt redundant, so we didn't order extra rice, but I do think plain rice would have been a good compliment to the savory/spicy flavors. Eating the eggplant was slightly challenging at first but once I figured you could rip strips of it with chopsticks and roll them up like a rich garlicky eggplant roll, I was sold. It's garnished with a few peppers and cilantro leaves among the massive pile of oiled garlic, so for the heat-averse be aware of that too. As a garlic fan, I loved it! I'm looking at reviews that only mention sushi, so don't know if this is a new addition to their repertoire. After eating there today, I've put this on my list of restaurants to return to for both sushi *and* BBQ!

The food was fresh but rather bland. The "Pretty Roll" has spicy mayo on it, which was not listed in the ingredients on the menu. When we mentioned this, the waitress just smiled and nodded and presented the bill; for some reason, this rubbed me the wrong way.

I love their food!! It's amazing after they included more items to their menu. I love Sweet Potato Tempura! It's the best ever!!! I love Red Snapper Sashimi or Sushi. And I like their Okonimiyaki but I used love it when it was made with Mochiko. I never had better Okonomiyaki when they used to make with rice flour instead the regular one. They should keep it. :(

Good find in Squirrel Hill! Small restaurant, but seated right away. Most other guests appeared to order the Japanese Hot Pot, which looked delicious. The sushi was good, and they had good options for non fish eaters too.

When I first saw this place I was a little skeptical but I have to say that after multiple trips back this is easily one of our favorite places in town now. The fish is extremely fresh and the food is all excellent. It's obvious that these guys care about serving a quality product and go out of their way to make everything a good experience. Also, great that they are BYOB. To summarize, myseven year old now says that, " this is my favorite place in Pittsburgh." UPDATE: After numerous trips back here, I can still say that this is one of our favorite places in town. The fish is consistently the best I've had in Pittsburgh. The chirashi plate is more like a sashimi sampler, but is an amazing bargain for the quality. Ask for the fried baby octopus appetizer. It's not on the menu, but is delicious - my kids will each eat a whole skewer! I love what these guys are doing, check it out!

Dear lord this place is wonderful. It's hard to find, it feels camouflaged in a sea of squirrel hill storefronts. If you have what it takes to uncover to fresh fish treasure, boy will you be rewarded. The maki and nigiri are just perfect. Service was quick and friendly with a smile! The menu was very reasonable with a great selection and variety. My pie hole could not have been happier... one piece better than the next. This gem is quite the find, it won't be hidden for long...

A good sushi spot in the heart of Squirrel Hill - I don't understand why it was not packed at weekday lunch, although they did a steady takeout business while we were there. They were pretty good at accommodating our large party (and too our reservation), and rolled with the particular requests from finicky French children. I highly rate the spicy tuna roll, called the Crazy Tuna Roll.

Worth it. REALLY good sushi and service. This place used to be 15 degrees Fahrenheit but it's since switched to Diners 2+1. I was skeptical when I first walked in, since you have to place your order and pay at a counter first before you sit down. My bf and I decided to go with the Benny roll, the tricolor roll, and the sushi sandwich for our main. We also got tuna tataki as a starter. The tuna came out first. I'm not a huge fan of tuna tataki in general so I thought it was ok. A little spicy. The presentation was visually appealing though (can be seen in photos). One of the staff very frequently came to checkup on us to make sure everything was ok. He was very kind, attentive, and knowledgeable. He even brought us a complimentary fried squid dish! I'm not sure if it was on the menu, but I suggest they put it on because it was very good. It tasted like calamari and certainly better than some that I've had before. Then the main rolls came out. Again, the presentation was gorgeous. I almost didn't want to use the sauce because I didn't want to ruin the presentation. The sushi sandwich, a "let's try something new" decision, was unexpectedly tasty. It's ingredients made it soft yet firm and I was delighted at its combination of flavors. The tricolor roll was my favorite as I could definitely taste the freshness of the fish. The fish (salmon, tuna, and red snapper) seemed to melt in my mouth. The Benny roll had a nice smoky flavor and crunch from the shrimp tempura. Our waiter who revealed himself to be the chef told us about how he makes every shrimp tempura fresh to ensure their best quality. I was very happy with the rolls, they were better than almost every other Pittsburgh sushi place I have been to. At the end I found myself pleasantly full but still wanting more. The service was great, the sushi was fresh, and I would definitely come back here. I was even thinking of returning the next day! Overall, the combination of the food and the service left me feeling as though I should have tipped more in the beginning. I will definitely be back.

One of the few things I miss most in Pittsburgh is quality sushi. I usually go to Sushi Fuku to quickly satisfy my cravings. But if you have time, I highly suggest that you come to Diners 2+1 instead! It's very new (apparently it only opened 3 weeks ago) so I admit there are things to improve upon. For instance, the inside is very small with limited seating. Only one other family was there when I went, so this wasn't a problem for me but I can see how this can become an issue if it becomes more popular. Additionally, there was only one cashier and one sushi chef at this time so the food may come out slowly if there are larger orders (again, this wasn't a problem for me during this visit). Let me start by saying that the service here is AMAZING. We ordered the spicy tuna roll, dragon roll, and chirashi bowl. The man at the register gave such good recommendations for food and was so friendly. When we sat down, we received a plate with two fried squid on sticks (that I don't even think is on the menu) and it was delicious! Additionally, the quality of the food is so good for the price. We were told that the shrimp tempura is not frozen and reheated, but freshly fried in the restaurant after the order is put in. And oh my goodness, it did not disappoint! The tempura may have been my favorite part of this place, because it tasted so authentic and there was so much shrimp meat! I also think the fish was very fresh and flavorful, although the spicy tuna wasn't as spicy as I would have liked. We liked the food so much that even though we were stuffed, we ordered two more hand rolls and we received even more tempura pieces on the side for free! Usually, I think cheaper sushi places cover up their lack of quality with yummy sauces. But this place was definitely good even without being drowned in teriyaki sauce and spicy mayo. On top of the amazing food and service, it was pretty affordable for sushi in Pittsburgh (similar prices to Sushi Fuku for higher quality). You also pay before you eat so you don't have to pay tip! You can also call ahead for your catering needs. And if all of that didn't convince you, there's free wifi. Basically: 5/5 service 5/5 food 4/5 prices 3/5 interior aesthetic
