Where to Eat Ice Cream in the Twin Cities

"An East Lake Street favorite, La Michoacana Purepecha serves a vast array agua frescas and over 30 flavors ice cream. Perhaps most popular are the paletas, some tart and fruity and others made with a rich creamy base. The sandia y limon is a lovely, tart choice for a hot summer day. Balance the sweetness out with Dorilocos or chicharrones." - Eater Staff, Stacy Brooks

Culinary dreams are made from visiting here. Lots of choices and summertime I've seen the line 40+ wrap around a half block. I had rum raisin, Mexican birthday cake and cappuccino flavored frozen cream. Friend had strawberry basil frozen fruit bar. Large walking taco selection and other quick serve food items on on top of 7huge glass display freezers. The young staff was were friendly and took time to suggest items and different offerings(cup, cone, toppings). They worked 12/30 (my b day treat)closing shift. Gal and guy as we were the only one there on a frozen storm night, they were pleasant, prepped for closing while being so respectful of space. I work with a lot of staff in food service and catering at a large college, it's rare to see smiling faces, attentive service and respect for company/owners on sllow nights and with just us for an hr. They were fantastic.

On weekends expect a wait especially as the temperature rises. Friendly staff and so many unique flavors of paletas (popsicles) to try. We had Nutella ice cream, mamoy and piñon (pine nut) paletas. All delicious.

I came here with some co-workers for a break and it was a fantastic experience. I got Oreo ice cream in the second to smallest cup and was pleasantly surprised at how much ice cream I received. I had the option of combining two flavors but chose to stick with the one. They had plenty of other options as well in addition to ice cream, so there's surely something for anyone. The staff were also very helpful and provided helpful insight into flavors, combinations, etc. I'll definitely be coming back, so an easy 5 stars from me!

Google
The BEST ice cream in the Twin Cities. I dream about the oreo ice cream, it's genuinely way better than a DQ blizzard. The esquite is always a hit! Same with the mangonadas.... yum yum yum. I wish their menu was a little easier to read, but after you go once you get the hang of it

Google
La Michoacana has just become my favorite ice cream shop. If you live in the Uptown/Midtown area and you like ice cream, I can pretty much guarantee you're going to like La Michoacana. There are lots of interesting flavors to choose from, although hands down my favorite so far is Coconut. It's rich and creamy and so full of real coconut that you have to chew on it. My mouth explodes every time I take a spoonful. They also have a bunch of different flavors of popsicles, some water-based and other cream-based. If it's a nice day, be prepared for a bit of a wait, sometimes the line is out the door, but it's totally worth it!

Google
So many fresh flavors of ice cream and mexican palletas. This place never is perfect for satisfying your ice cream craving. The portions are huge and the flavor is even bigger. Definitely try the Mexican cake ice cream or the rum raisin. Heck all the flavors hit on a different level than other ice cream places. This is a 10 out of 10.

Google
Oh my god this place is Amazing. This is where you want to go when you want a REAL snack! I had a ramen bowl with takis, cheese, and corn, it was amazing and the portion was really big. I couldn’t eat it all but it was the bomb 🔥The photo I included is the one from the display because I ate mine and forgot to take a picture 😂. I don’t have kids but I can just imagine that if I was pregnant I would be in here all the time.

Google
Superb ice cream parlor ... Crazy variety , numerous flavours .. they serve popsicle , cones , waffle cones , shake , smoothies , snacks in 2 different style creamy and water based . All flavours are very rich as it's made with real fruits . Service is very good. There is no parking lot , but you can park in the nearby street . Gets crowded real fast due to it's popularity. They have few seats and table if you want to sit and eat , otherwise can just grab and go . We tried mangolada , taquila shake and strawberry waffle cone all were very tasty . Will sure return to taste the remaining flavours soon ..

Yelp
There is a large selection of the items you can purchase. We came here just for some ice cream which tasted great. The line moves pretty fast and the staff is always active making the orders for everyone. The establishment is pretty clean. The only issue we came across was telling the staff member what we wanted. There definitely was a language barrier so we ended up having just to point at the items we wanted. Other than that it was a pretty good place. If I'm in the area i would probably stop by again

Yelp
We were refused service. We stood in line like everyone else and when we got up to the counter, none of the servers would make eye contact. All three servers waited on customers who were in line after us. I'm assuming we were refused service because we were white. We wanted to support a local shop, but we ended up walking out. We'll happily give our money elsewhere.

Yelp
Agua frescas - great idea to put real fruit in the water, very refreshing. Fun vibe, happy noisy all ages crowd when I stopped while biking across the city. People seem to love their ice cream cones, next time!

Ismahan S.

Yelp
The food is fantastic. I love it, but the only drawback is that the medium price is 9 dollars. It's rather expensive for such a small cup, and the small McDonald's cup is the same size as La Michoacana's cup. I think I'm just being cheap tho ‍‍‍ Honestly idk

Brian G.

Yelp
So fun!!! Great ice cream and popsicle selection, and everyone there seems they're having such a good time!

Yelp
Every time I drive past this spot, the line is out the door and onto the sidewalk. I now know why. This is hands down the BEST ice cream I've had in Minneapolis--fight me! Homemade, all natural ingredients, and so many options. The obvious must-get is Mangonada. It is fresh frozen mango purée, swirled with Tajin and topped with fresh mango. Served with a straw wrapped with a fruit leather Tajin spiced goodness! You just have to get it to understand its powers. Next up: get Gansito ice cream! They put this delicious Mexican version of a Twinkie into ice cream form and it's unreal. I love the pistachio and m&m ice cream here too. Can't go wrong! And get some popsicles to go! All homemade and over 30 insanely delicious flavors. Seriously, options are endless! Still hungry? Get a Flaming Hot Cheetos walking taco. I didn't even know I needed this until I saw it. I can't say enough about this place. An absolute MIST VISIT!

Yelp
Wow! I'm so glad I made time to come here on my visit. Mask up - everyone there was. We decided on fruit bars and I told the employee there that I love fresh mango and hot sauce. Turns into that have that in a bar! Sweet, sour and spicy - exactly what I love.

Yelp
Been disappointed twice the girls act very dumb and are racist as if a sport. That's ok your folks should know what your doing to their life savings. You sell me a pint for $13, hand pack it, don't weigh it, call me out for watching you droop your clothes in the almost empty bucket. I get home all air pockets. Folks stay away cause that's what these girls want. Folks say but it's good. Super premium at a gas station twice as good price/butterfat. This stuff is low-fat. The horchata is good but the price of gasoline. In new places in the hood I go 3 times. Once curious next support next nowhere else to go. Well they don't get another visit. It's a great dream ruined.

Yelp
So, my daughter who lived in Las Vegas for 15 years had a favorite Mexican ice cream place her friend (who is originally from Mexico) always raved about. Now that she moved back to the Twin Cities, I knew I had to bring her and check out this place together. She actually ended up taking pictures and sending them to her friend, raving that this place is WAY better than the one she frequented in Vegas. They had easily 20 different paletas (fruit and/or ice cream bars on a stick), with several dairy free options. Probably 30 + ice cream flavors also with dairy free options. My mouth did a happy dance for the mango & coconut 2-scoop cone I chose, and my wallet did one too, as I got ice cream for 7 people and an elote cup for $40! Perhaps best of all was how friendly and helpful the staff were. When I mentioned we were bringing the paletas home and asked for an extra bag, the gal who helped us asked if I would like some ice in the bag... above and beyond service! This place is FIRE!

Yelp
The ice cream is really good. Flavors shine through and the mouthfeel isn't fatty or custard-y. Their popsicles are really fantastic... interesting flavor combos that you would not expect to work in a cold desert item

Melina P.

Yelp
Food is good but the workers always give a rude stare and make you feel dumb honestly

Marie C.

Yelp
Great ice cream flavors! Inside and outside seating. Friendly staff. Yummy in the tummy right away or bring home.

Yelp
I was visiting Minneapolis earlier this month and took a walk down Lake Street to check out some local businesses. As it was a warm afternoon in July, the ice cream called to me when I passed by La Michoacana Purepecha, and so I decided to give it a try. The place was packed but the staff are super friendly and took the time to offer me samples of some of the various, unique flavors: queso, mango, chongos zamoranos to name a few. I decided on the Ferrero Rocher flavor and was not disappointed. The next day I biked back here with a friend and we got some flavors to go. I tried the guava and decided to go with that. Though I'm not usually partial to fruit flavors, the guava was loaded with pieces of fresh fruit and was very refreshing and not too sweet. I will definitely return here next time I'm visiting Minneapolis in the summer.

Yelp
The secret is out. Walking tacos are huge in big bag of Takitas. So good Mangonauta is over the top good. Think mango with Mexican tajin seasoning in a cup OMG They also have really thick homemade ice creams and fruit homemade popcicles

Yelp
LOCATION: The neighborhood is on the east side of Downtown Minneapolis, MN. PARKING: Street parking; if it's earlier in the day, it's not hard to find a lot of street parking. But at busier times, it can be challenging. FOOD: I had the cookies and creme ice cream scoop on a waffle cone. It was so so so good. I enjoyed how they had big chunks of oreo cookie in it. PRICE: My friend paid for me so I'm not sure how the prices were. But, for whatever price it was, they really stacked the ice cream high for 1 scoop. SERVICE: The workers were nice. OVERALL EXPERIENCE: I liked the place. They had delicious ice cream and they also offer other ice cream/snacks. My friends ordered some savory snacks and they looked good too. I would come back for more ice cream :)

Yelp
Yummy and delicious ice cream and treats. Lots of flavors to choose from. Very limited parking but spacious inside. I always drive by this place and I finally had the chance to try it out. Quick and friendly service. Highly recommend if you're in the area.

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
This place is just so much better than other commercial ice cream. It tastes so fresh! I'm loving the pistachio I'm eating right now, but where they most conspicuously shine is fruit flavors.
google avatar

Anne Q.

Yelp
What is there not to love about this place?! Delicious paletas/popsicles, giant agua frescas, and big of scoops of ice cream and all for a good price! Various selections of flavors! Plus, it's all natural and fresh!. I've been here before for the paletas and agua frescas. This time I finally tried their ice cream. From all the flavors, I decided on Ferrero Rocher... because where else are you going to find that flavor? The nice lady helping me, just kept stacking the scoops of ice cream. I'm like oh my! Just for $4. The ice cream--"que rico" just like the chocolate! Whenever I come here, there are always customers -- that's a good sign. Next time I'm coming back to other flavors and try the other treats, perhaps chocolate covered banana or mangonada. Hmm....
google avatar

Vina V.

Yelp
Ok, this spot has some super yummy frozen treats. I had the mango and strawberry fruit bar, and it was so good. You can tell it was made fresh, and with real fruit. I also had the pistachio ice cream on a waffle cone -- also really yummy. Lastly, I tried the frozen chocolate bananas, which were ok. In general I'm not a big fan of choco bananas, but they were made fresh and with good quality chocolate. This place had so much variety, I'll definitely have to go back more than once to try more flavors. My friends recommended the strawberry kiwi and Ferrero Rocher bar.
google avatar

Abimelec G.

Yelp
One of my favorite Mexican ice cream place, they have all natural fruit and a lot of choices, not only ice cream but a lot of Mexican treats. yuuuum yuuum..!!! If you want to taste real ice cream come here with your family. It has nice location, inside is all colorful so you feel you are in the right place for ice cream. Good prices, good people, good flavors. The only problem is to find a good parking space.

Myla F.

Yelp
Mmm mmm mm the food soo bussin bussin it's so good after a good shesh highly recommend very bussin

Janaan A.

Yelp
My new addiction. WOW! This business is not only taking initiative to limit Covid-19 by having hungry customers wait outside and 6+ feet apart, but they are also providing good comfort treats with excellent customer service. Finding parking on Lake Street is worth it! I didn't even leave my parking spot after I got my food. I couldn't drive AND eat my food. I chose to eat it all right here outside the establishment. That's how good it is! The owner was working alongside his staff which shows that he not only cares about his business but he also values his employees. Walking inside will definitely remind you that you don't have Covid because your sense of smell is off the charts. Fresh fruit, cooked corn, and chocolate galore. I'll be commuting here as often as I can. It's worth it. No wonder there is always a long line.
google avatar

Mahima V.

Yelp
Obsessed with their mangonada. It's a must. It's like tangy, and sweet, and salty and just all the finger lickin' good. I hear all their ice cream is good....but this. is. it. And probably the only thing I'll get a few times over. Be forewarned, it's not a typical ice cream. It's like mango sorbet with fresh lil pieces of mango, tajin, chamoy and tamarind. So if you're expecting creamy goodness that is traditional ice cream, this specific treat isn't it.
google avatar

Susan Y.

Yelp
Hands down the most underrated ice cream shop in the Twin Cities. Why do I not know the existence of this place? Authentic, affordable, big portion, and large selections. This has become one of favorite spots in Minneapolis. I'm in love with this place! The cappuccino and Ferrero Rocher ice cream = must. No, actually everything is a must. The rum raisin flavored ice cream is surprisingly good. You can really taste the rum. I'd describe their ice cream texture as Cold Stone, the stretchy, creamy kind. So so so good. Can't wait to come back to try other flavors!
google avatar

Lanoy I.

Yelp
Pretty good spot. Quick and friendly service. The ice cream is very good quality.. so many different flavors to chose from.. Fresh fruit in the ice cream. it's amazing actually..

Maria J.

Yelp
Very good food but very bad customer service. My husband and I are very picky eaters but love coming here because they are always willing to do changes for us. Right after covid the store was full off Teenagers/ collage students who at least were respectful and nice. Today we walked in and saw that had changed, We were greeted by this older lady with an attitude. When I gave her my order she turned around and started making fun of me and my husband. Find it very rude to just say things behind our backs and having an attitude when you're doing your job & getting paid. La michoacana needs workers with a better attitude
google avatar

Ellie M.

Yelp
Best ice cream in MN! So creamy and delicious! They have so many delicious Mexican treats! I had hot Cheetos with cheese which was delicious! As far as ice cream flavors I had gansito and rompope! So creamy! They have natural water which are so refreshing! I have tried limon con chia (lemonade with chia), agua de fresa (strawberry milk water), agua de rompope.
google avatar

Hima M.

Yelp
Delicious Ferrero Rocher ice cream (yes that's a thing)! They also have popsicles which I can't wait to go back and try!
google avatar

Aaron P.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream at a value of a cost. The portions are huge. The traditional and exciting paletas have beautiful presentation and flavor choices extensive. These seem like a labor of love.
google avatar

Sanchez B.

Yelp
Absolutely LOVE this place!!! So glad they expanded this from Chicago! The workers are so friendly, and everything is pretty good. A few small hiccups and kinks, but they just opened so it's to be expected. I'll be sure to update the review with a little more detail once they've been open a little longer!

Marco A.

Yelp
This is my favorite ice cream shop in Mpls always have something new to try. Two thumbs up
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
Very fresh tasting and delicious ice cream flavors. I had a scoop of Ferrero Rocher and M&M. I will definitely be going back to try more flavors.
google avatar

Rosy G.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! They have unique treats that I can't find anywhere else in Minneapolis without having to search extensively. They have drinks, ice cream, popsicles, chicharrones, and other unique Mexican street treats. The cons are that the space is very small and gets super crowded with the line extending out the door. The seating is mediocre and they only have ONE bathroom. Also, unless you are already familiar with the treats from your childhood, you will have no idea what you are ordering as there are no descriptions of what each item is. The plus side is that the employees are super sweet and helpful. Also, parking sucks. You gotta find parking on the surrounding streets as they don't have their own parking spots. But don't let the negatives deter you. Everything tastes super fresh and takes me back to my Mexican childhood.

Cathy C.

Yelp
I was out at The outlet shopping, decided to stop and get something to snack on, the young lady in the store was very rude. She was the shortest out of all of them. And The loudest. Screaming the line is over there ,can't she read. The store was very crowded. I made my purchase and I wanted to order something else .she said very loudly you have to go over there and order. and they never took my second order. I guess I was treated badly because I am brown skin. I lost 10 family members due to Covid. You need to train your employees on how to talk to customers their customer service skills are terrible. You need a supervisor over 25 Everyday at your store each shift. You allowing kids to run your store .Send someone undercover once a month at each location. you will find out a lot about your store. I will never eat at this place again. I work at several schools in Minnesota. Thanks for your bad service
google avatar

Yoshi H.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream, aguas frescas and other snacks and desserts! So authentic Mexican Michoacana! Contrary to what others have said, this is NOT a chain. This is a one of a kind place unique in that it is Michoacana Purepecha. I know the owners and this is not a chain. Flavors are amazing and you MUST try it to believe it!!! Over 50 flavors at least!!!
google avatar

Farah K.

Yelp
They offer amazing dessert options. I've only been there once and I'm quite satisfied with their ice cream and fruit treats. Not to mention it's literally walking distance from my house so it's perfect for a sunny day! I will come back again but only when the line isn't long.

Hope I.

Yelp
They have so many unique varieties of popsicles and ice cream! We had ice cream today and it was great! It's not overly sweet and has a great texture! Highly recommend and can't wait to go back soon.

Srinidhi B.

Yelp
The horchata and Ferro Rocher popsicles are divine! And the pricing on the popsicles is unbeatable! Kids ice cream cone is on the larger side, and pricier than most locations. I only wish they had their menu posted on the windows so we could browse while waiting to get in. Given the current social distancing norms it would be helpful to get a look at the menu before entering the store rather than waiting to look for options inside.

Heather W.

Yelp
So very good! I was at the East 7th St location in St Paul. Can't seem to find it here on Yelp. The mangonada was delicious -- cold, tangy, spicy, a little sweet. Perfection! I also had a cappuccino paletas and it was excellent too. Wasn't very busy but it felt safe and masks were worn by everyone. Hope to get back there soon!

John S.

Yelp
This place has a HUGE selection of ice cream and frozen fruit bars. I ordered a single-scoop waffle cone and you get a massive portion they will serve with the cone in a dish to help make it easier to handle. The frozen ice cream and fruit bars look really good as well. Be ready to wait a little because the place is always busy, especially when the weather is warm! However, they set you up fast. Will go back!
google avatar

Lesly H.

Yelp
The ice cream and treats are DELICIOUS. Definitely the best michoacana in Minneapolis. Although, their system is VERY messy. Everytime i go in, people are crowded everywhere. You don't even know if their waiting for their stuff, wanting to pay, or ordering. way TOO messy for such a great place. I even saw people leaving without paying because of their unorganized system.

Faduma A.

Yelp
They have the best deserts evererrrrrr i mean it's a little over priced but it's all good

Matt S.

Yelp
Amazing treats and very friendly staff. We'll be back soon for sure. After a few tastes we settled on a horchata and a watermelon paleta - great despite 20 degree weather outside.
