"Short Lighthouse Tall Order A lighthouses has a huge responsibility to ships passing through its territory, a tall order if you will pardon the pun! So when I arrived at Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse in Dunsborough, to find the shortest lighthouse I've ever seen -- I didn't understand how it could possibly do the job required of such a structure. It turns out, Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse is an engineering marvel in a way. Sitting very high above the ocean on a limestone cliff's edge, just at the right spot, its light reaches all the way to horizon in every pertinent direction. It has been doing this since it was erected in 1903. At its highest point, it is 123 metres above sea level. The guided tour of the lighthouse is worth every penny if you're a fan of maritime history or Geographe Bay. Also, it allows you access up into the lighthouse whereas merely exploring the area will not afford you that opportunity."

You’ll need tickets to visit the lighthouse, but it’s well worth it. The place is stunning and full of history, and the tour provided plenty of interesting insights. Visitors can climb to the top, and there’s also a small museum in the area.

Nice for a quick sightsee. Used to be free but now $6 per adult or $3 for a child over 4+ or $17 for adult to do a trip up and a tour of the actual inside of the lighthouse. Not the end of the world but nevertheless added costs for families planning a trip to see it just so you’re aware. Facilities have also been revamped and improved. Wheelchair access friendly also.

Great location with lots of different hikes suitable for any fitness level. Only had two hours, but managed to see some whales at the whale watching outpost and also visited the historical lighthouse.

we visited Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse. The sky was partially covered with clouds, giving the place a dramatic yet peaceful atmosphere. From the top, the views stretched endlessly over the coastline, turquoise waters meeting rugged cliffs, with waves rolling in the distance. The site is steeped in history, and as we explored, we learned about the lighthouse’s role in guiding ships and protecting sailors over the decades. Standing there, surrounded by fresh ocean air and the sound of the wind, it felt like stepping back in time while still being deeply connected to the beauty of the present moment.

Great place to visit. The lighthouse tour is well worth taking to understand the history of the site. Amazing place to see whales from the lighthouse balcony and also the viewing deck.

You can pay a heritage fee (under $10) to view the area, or you can climb the lighthouse for a higher fee (under $20). We chose to walk the lighthouse loop track which gave us some view of the lighthouse but a lot of entertainment from the whales who were frolicking and playing. A beautiful sight.

Beautiful lighthouse with a chance to spot whales. There is a kids playground in the entrance and a cute little museum for the kids, lighthouse seems to be well maintained, stunning view all around!

Yelp
If you want to check-mark off seeing where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean, or the most south-westerly point of Australia, or the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia then come to the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. It's just 10 minutes south of Augusta, and roughly half an hour from the main street of the Margaret River region. They are open everyday til 5pm, so plan accordingly. We didn't, so this happened to be a place where we drove to, see and take windy pictures of and then drive back from. There are guided tower tours every half hour starting at 9am. We opted for a self guided audio tour, you don't really have a choice and need one to enter the area, it's only $8 for adults. By the way, there is a cafe here. If you come from May to September, chances are you can spot some whales from here, and that's pretty cool in itself. If you like maritime history, you'd probably find the lighthouse fascinating, it was constructed from local limestone in 1895. I'm not a big history person, and I didn't come here between May to September.

Yelp
my virgin lighthouse experience! first impression was that it's nothing really majestic. you just can't help but wonder why it's so short and stubby? quite unlike it's taller, not so distant cousin in cape leeuwin. but that's where perception misleads. in fact, although it's height is half that of it's cousin, it's elevation is actually more than double at 123m above sea level! thus, the view is way spectacular up here! but let's not get ahead of ourselves. this visit was actually setup way back at the busselton visitor centre. a promotional voucher, so fortuitously gained there, ensured it was cheaper to visit ngilgi cave paired with the lighthouse(above & below pass) as 2 adults and 2 children than it's equivalent family pass. tickets are available on site with tours departing every 30mins, first tour at 9.30am and last tour 4pm. it's an easy drive with well posted signs culminating in free parking. locate the shop cum cafe to get your tickets and/or meet up with your guide. at our time of visit, we were the only family and it became a really exclusive private tour! the story and history begins as you walk past the old lighthouse keeper's quarters towards this working lighthouse. once inside the tower, you learn to appreciate even more how modern technology helped replaced ancient hardship. an easy ascend, of merely 59 steps, brings you onto the balcony of breathtaking panoramic beauty. that's when the lighthouse family's monster hit 'high' start to gently surround you as you bask in the glory of mother nature. and if you are as lucky as we were, spotting a whale is an added bonus, with september to december being such jackpot months. and of course, our friendly, full of gadgets guide quickly whipped out his binoculars for us to better take in this whale of a sight. sadly however, you can't stay up there forever. so after bidding farewell to sugarloaf rock in the setting sun, we reluctantly descended onto the trail. but do keep your eyes peeled as a joey or two might come a jumping.

Yelp
From a 'lighthouse-only' perspective, this is not one of the more beautiful lights in the world...though far, far from the ugliest (Oak Island Light, North Carolina, USA holds that title!). It has little of the 'old world' charm of some of the European lights and none of the rugged beauty of the North American lights.... .....BUT.... It is a wonderful light for other reasons! The fresnel is technically one of the coolest assemblages of glass I have ever seen! The area it is in is one of the best whale watching from this point is absolutely perfect! The Indian Ocean unfolds before you and you get a small feeling of just exactly how big it is! PROTIP: See the light briefly. Spend your time driving down the unmarked, unnamed dirt road on the left, just before you enter the lighthouse park proper...the beaches and rocks are amazing! You can make it in a typical 2WD family passenger car.... Amazing sights await you!
