How a Lunar New Year Trip to Richmond, British Columbia, Taught Me How to Embrace Being Asian American

"An Asian marketplace and food court housing stalls like the rice-roll and congee vendor mentioned above, serving as a focal point for everyday cross-cultural food life in the city." - Rachel Chang Rachel Chang Rachel Chang is a travel and pop culture journalist who contributes to Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, and more. 24 Hours of Asian Food in Richmond, B.C. | Eater Seattle

"I head to the somewhat ragtag Richmond Public Market and make a beeline for the second-floor food court, where stalls draw long lines and a lively mix of casual eats." - Jay Friedman

The 22 Best Restaurants in Richmond, BC | Eater

"The building has seen better days, but the Richmond Public Market, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, unwaveringly holds the promise of an affordable, memorable meal. Downstairs you’ll find vendors selling produce, packages of noodles and dumplings, roasted meat, and more, while upstairs is a food court with specialties from all over China. Of note: Nanjing cuisine at Bian Fu Chang, biang-biang noodles at Xi’an Cuisine, and Richmond’s oldest and possibly cheapest bubble tea at Peanut’s Bubble Tea. [$ - $$]" - Jay Friedman

There is a convenient parking lot, although it can get a little crowded, and you might need to wait for a spot. The building has two floors. The first floor sells daily essentials like vegetables, groceries, books, keys, and even live seafood, which makes browsing quite interesting; the second floor is a food court. The choices are standard but satisfying, and the prices are reasonably fair. Even though fresh produce and meat are sold on the first floor, the space is kept very clean, which I really appreciate. The place may be a bit old, but it still feels clean and bright.

It looks like an Asian mall here. Nothing much to get nor shop for tourists. There are a couple of decent food options. Free parking is a plus.

Came here for the food court upstairs. Some shops be killing it while some are a little dreadful. The competition is fierce with any Asian style food courts. Can still find a couple gems though. Just go where there is a line up or constant take out orders. There will be deals! The place is a little dated and reminds me of of Crystal Mall in metrotown or an older food court in Kowloon side of Hong Kong.

First time here even been living for years!! I regret that I didn’t come earlier for the food court , everything that we ordered from 3 different stalls were so good!!

We enjoyed our breakfast at this market. There were couple of options to choose from and we got Congee (rice porride with goodies) and Wonton soup- filling, tasty and affordable. Its self service and good to carry cash for the payments.

Cute place to visit if you’re in Vancouver, you must check it out. There’s lots of food choices and lots of cute things. Look at even if you’re on a budget you can still have a good time here lots of authentic food.

Really nice place. The downstairs has really good deals on produce. And it's pretty busy. But busy is good. They have other types of interesting shops. Upstairs has other shops and a really awesome food court. There are so many things to choose from. I will definitely come back go try different things. The parking lot was okay. Pretty cramped but manageable.

Felt like I was back in Asia 😂 haha good and quite authentic food with great portion sizes (huge!!) for such an affordable price. Best to bring cash as it is most preferred. Some if not most stalls don’t accept cards for payment (my experience with the stall on ground level selling char siu at least, and was told this by the guy in front of me in the line 😂) To add, it’s a relatively clean place — there were staff that consistently went around to clean up. Overall great place!! Would go back when convenient, around the area and in the mood for lots of food!!
