"Dar Roumana is widely celebrated as having the best restaurant in Fes, and with goodreason. Its charming courtyard dining room—decorated with cream-colored upholsteryand tropical plants that complement the building’s original hand-cut zellij tiles, carved plaster, and painted-wood ceilings—is also rave-worthy. Arrive early enough to sip its signature pomegranate fizz from the crow’s nest, then settle in to indulge in a menu that fuses the flavors of Morocco with the finesse of classical French cuisine. Perennial favorites are the roast pumpkin salad with goat cheese, chilies, and coriander; braised local rabbit in mustard; and an elegant, bitter chocolate tart that could cause even the bistros of Paris to bristle with envy. Top tip: For a romantic winter meal, reserve the table by the fireplace."

Dar Roumana, Fes, Morocco - Explore & Book

"The ‘house of the pomegranate’ is a spectacular residence just inside the medina's upper walls, with biblical views from its crows nest over close-packed rooftops and minarets. It was only after moving in that US-born Jennifer discovered these views - and knew she’d struck gold. But she also worked hard for it. For 3 years she supervised the pain-staking restoration of its ornate, tall-ceilinged bedrooms. Minutely-carved wooden screens and stucco friezes were cleaned with toothpicks and wire wool; the splendid court gleams with blue-white Fassi tiling. Besides the burbling fountain is a ceremonial bartal (alcove), cosy with guides, city maps, a sleeping cat and Sebastian’s guitar. His flawless flamenco accompanies you as you wind up steep stairwells to the roof terrace, strewn with leather pouffes and inviting sofas. You can take dinner up here too (a happy fusion of local ingredients and high-end cooking), before lazing under the stars with a satisfied grin on your face. Highs The Royal Suite (Yasmina) is one of the most splendid riad-rooms in Fes; and the other 4 aren't far behind From the moment you arrive, Jennifer and Sebastian treat you as friends; they can take you on a guided tour of the medina and its food markets Dinners are fresh and varied, made with ingredients bought from the market first thing that morning You’re away from the medina’s hustle and bustle (even the dawn prayer call is more muted here), but only 10 minutes’ walk to the heart of the souks The roof terrace is a lovely space for post-souk relaxation, with its sheltered seating, raised crow’s nest and the rustle of a huge plane tree alongside Lows The ground-floor Roumana Suite lacks privacy (close windows and shutters before wandering about your room in a state of undress!) and air con A couple of bathrooms lack natural light It’s hard to find - though only 5 mins’ walk from either Bab Guissa or Ain Azlitan gates, where you can be met We've heard intermittent reports of noisy dogs and cockerels - bring ear plugs just in case" - Michael Cullen

We had dinner at Dar Roumana on a weeknight at 8 pm, and were the last table to leave at around half-past nine. The starters and mains were both very good, even though one of our first preferences was not available. The dessert was just OK. Service was excellent, with a friendly and attentive waiter always ready to assist. The local wines, whilst rather good, were quite expensive for Morocco. In all, a nice restaurant with good ambience and not too many tables. Recommended.

Dar Roumana, without question, should be the central pillar of your journey through Morocco. It has been the highlight of mine, standing out among the 5000km I have traveled by road between Switzerland and the border with Mauritania. It is, to me, the perfect place to stay. Soaked in centuries of culture, it is for me the embodiment of what a Riad should be.. these old houses, almost sanctuaries, with their inner courtyards and calm and art in every millimeter. Redouane has been of incredible help here. He has gone beyond what could be expected, organizing special requests I had in Fès, far beyond the walls of the Riad, so that I could have things produced that I will keep for life. I will always be grateful to him. Nezha has been incredibly gracious and warm, and I cheer her on, on her journey. The architecture, the food, the obviously love that has been put in, the service, the incredible character of the place.. I would love to return.

The property is well located just a short walk from the market area. The rooftop terrace provides nice views and a comfortable setting to relax and enjoy the sunset and evening lights. The restaurant was comfortable and the menu was delicious. The staff greeted us with smiles and provided excellent service throughout our stay.

Beautiful Dar close to everything, the service was exceptional, the lovely dining area and side salons are perfect to relax in after a busy day exploring. The roof top terrace has spectacular views across the city. We could not have enjoyed our stay more.

Beautiful building near the heart of the medina. Huge rooms with lots of original moroccan features. Plus a large roof terrace. Delicious (French) food. And welcoming staff. One of our favourite hotels on our visit to Morocco.

This review is for the food, and not the Riad. We went there for dinner, and this was the most disappointing dining experience in terms of the food. For starters, we got a salad and their mixed seafood. The seafood was overcooked, and the sauce tasted like something you would whip up on a weekday at home. The salad was underwhelming, tasting as well like something you would make at home on a weekday. For mains, we ordered the chicken and the sea bass. The chicken was well cooked with crispy skin, but nothing out of the ordinary. The seabass was well done, but only one small seabass filet as a main... Service was very friendly and attentive. The ambiance was nice, but a bit warm. Even though technically we were outside, the outdoor area was completely covered and felt a bit stuffy.

Exceptional experience staying at Dar Roumana. Staff was eager to support in many ways including arranging transportation, personal walk through of city by map, food preparation, excellent communication for arrival and departure. Rooftop terrace is favorably located for a nearly unobstructed view of the Medina. Conveniently situated within reasonable walking distance to several key highlights of the city. Clean interior, quiet with beautiful adornments. Breakfast was delicious! Fruit, chocolate crepes, fried cakes, bread, jelly, cream cheese, butter, orange juice made fresh. We wish we could have met the owner. Very great experience staying at Dar Roumana.

Our stay at Riad Dar Roumana was absolutely wonderful. The food was delicious, the ambience was peaceful and beautifully traditional, and the staff were fabulous. The Riad is also situated in a perfect spot. Would highly recommend!
