I agree with other reviews that this is simply NOT a 5-star hotel. The owners aspire to that level, but it simply doesn't work. The driveway and lobby are impressive, but that's where the positives end. If you've booked a standard room (which still costs €200-400 per night or more, depending on the season!), it's a real shock to enter the room, which is not much bigger than a room at a "Moxy"! Upon arrival, there was a strong, unpleasant odor coming from the bathroom, which improved after some use – apparently, there's a problem with the drains.
The spa area is like a labyrinth, with one section belonging to the hotel and another part open to the public. The hotel section offers a somewhat acceptable standard, but I still wouldn't consider it 5-star quality. The public area consists of some rather bizarre spaces, such as an inhalation room and a mud bath room, where it looks as if time has stood still since the 1970s! Both areas close at 7 p.m. sharp, so you can't go to the sauna in the evening.
To visit the grotto, which gives the hotel its name, you have to pay an extra 50 euros per visit, per person – and that on top of the already steep room rate! Absolutely insane and disappointing! We decided against it.
The selection at breakfast buffet is also far too limited for a 5-star hotel. If you stay for several days, you inevitably end up eating the same thing every day; there's no variety whatsoever. For example, there are only two types of juice: orange juice and pineapple juice. That's it! Here, too, comparisons with other (cheaper) Marriott brands are inevitable. One morning, we waited almost 30 minutes for our coffee because the staff had forgotten it. Furthermore, during our stay, dirty tables were cleared very slowly.
My theory is the following: "Autograph Collection" hotels aren't directly owned by Marriott, but rather by private operators who simply join the Bonvoy program. I think someone planned to build a luxury hotel in conjunction with the "Grotta Giusti" and completely overreached themselves. To cover the high costs of the old building and the large spa, they have to charge these absurdly high prices. Unfortunately, as a guest, you can't help but feel completely ripped off.
At least the staff is very friendly, but that alone doesn't cut it.
I'm giving it a fair 3 stars and won't be coming back.
