Heritage Hill State Historical Park

Love Heritage Hill State Historical Park, a true treasure right in the middle of Green Bay. The interpreters are knowledgeable and friendly. My favorite area is the 18th century area or Fur Trade area. They host several living history events in that area throughout the year, including an immersive 18th century Tavern Night twice a year.

Thought we still had a chance to get in when we saw a bunch of cars in the lot, but it was for a wedding. Missed out on another one. It's a shame you can't walk around the grounds during the off-hours. I came here once for a school field trip many, many years ago, but have not been able to make it back (on time) since. We'll have to make a point to do this BEFORE hiking in the area the next time, lol. There is a nice statue and garden area out front, and you can get a glimpse of some of the buildings, but otherwise can't see much. It's pretty cool seeing Lambeau Field in the distance. Now if they'd just turn the jumbotron around you could watch the games from here with a set of binoculars, lol.

We love this place. They have so many cool events. Many are free for a very reasonable membership rate. Our kids live to learn and this is a great place to do that.

You do have to pay an entrance fee. Great historical area. There are guides scattered throughout who are thoughtful and knowledgeable. Very interesting! Thoroughly enjoyed it.

To begin with there's a lot of walking not ideal for elderly or disable that's for sure. It was hard to get in the swing of things because everything is so impeccably clean and new it looks like it was just made. Some of the exhibits have costume characters giving an informative session. A tip do not visit on a hot day tip do not visit on a hot day.

Great place to visit & learn some history of old Green Bay. Paved trails, small gift shop, costumed interpreters during summer on certain days, & trolley available on certain days also. Leashed dogs allowed. Playground for kids. Lots of resting benches throughout. Good wedding venue.

Heritage Hill has been a place I have gone to for field trips when I was in grade school and now I have brought all of my kids here for field trips too! They had a new addition of a pretty neat playground with lots of picnic tables for families to use. There were only a few people here to act this day as some called in sick, so it was a bit of a disappointment. There are many new signs that one can read, but with a large group with kids that is difficult. Overall, still nice and so much to learn! I learn more each time I go!

I started going to Heritage Hills in elementary school with my parents and on class field trips, and I loved it every time. My daughter has attended summer camps here, and we love all the special events. She asks us to go there as a family even as a college student. It's lovely there.

Recently won a family pass to Heritage Hill. I held only a vague recollection of being here one time in elementary school for a field trip. I believe adult admission is $10 per person. We spent about two hours walking through the historical eras. Our favorite was spending time with the fur trader. We were each given the opportunity to throw a hatchet into a wooden block. He was quite interesting and you could tell he enjoyed his role. The "characters" explaining each structure really added to the experience and compelled the kids to actually retain a little something from the visit. The grounds themselves are beautiful and scenic to walk. They rent the facility for private events and it would be a great site to host a wedding if you could stay late enough into the evening. Lots of spots for wedding party photos. We enjoyed our visit and I am glad to have experienced Heritage Hill as an adult with my own children. It's not anywhere were likely to return to anytime soon but worthy of a first time historical & heritage visit if you find yourself in the Green Bay area looking to do something not Packers related.

Heritage Hill is a 40 acre site in Allouez, just east of the Fox River and across the river from the National Railroad Museum. An outdoor museum operated by the Wisconsin DNR, it is a collection of historic buildings that were moved to the site for preservation rather than be demolished in the name of progress. The forty acre site was once known as Camp Smith (ca. 1820) and later served as an orchard for the adjacent Green Bay Reformatory, cared for by inmates. The construction of highway 172 divided the property and made the orchard a logistical problem for guards. It was abandoned by the prison and eventually became a state park. The history of Wisconsin and the history of Green Bay are tightly enmeshed. This is where Pere Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet entered Wisconsin, in search of the elusive Northwest Passage to China. As the years went on, the Fox River and Wisconsin River route was the only means of communication between Fort Howard, Fort Winnebago (Portage) and Fort Crawford (Prairie du Chien) until the Military Road was completed. Fort Howard closed in 1852, and remains only as the name of a paper company. Several structures from Fort Howard were moved, or reproduced, here at Heritage Hill. Two are on the National Register of Historic Places. You'll also find several buildings listed on the NRHP including the Moravian Church, the Cotton House, and the oldest extant residence in Wisconsin, the Tank Cottage. This is an excellent history lesson for kids, in fact, it is the location of school field trips. In season, docents demonstrate activities as they were performed in a historical setting. A guided tour, on board a tram, is available. Wednesday and Friday are "Walkabout Days" at reduced rates because the buildings have limited access. On weekends, in season, Fort Howard buildings are open with costumed docents. Hours are 10:00-4:30, 12:00- 4:30 Sundays. The park is closed on Mondays. Off season, the park is only open Tuesday through Friday. Off season, rates are reduced to walk around the grounds. Off season, tram tours are only available on Tuesday and require an advanced reservation. Heritage Hill is open year round. For specials, see the website. Be prepared for a lot of walking. the site is, after all, 40 acres and structures are gathered in four logical, thematic groupings, those groupings are well spread around the grounds. A cursory walk-through will take at least a couple of hours but you won't see much in detail unless you stay a little longer. Like Old World Wisconsin in Eagle, this outdoor museum is a way to experience Wisconsin history, first hand. It's worth the trip!

Been meaning to stop here for years, and I'm glad I finally did. The place is a living history museum, sort of a village broken into different eras and subjects. Got a nice overview of the place from the cashier, and a map. Wandered around on my own. Not every building had interpreters (I came around noon and some were at lunch) but those I talked to were very knowledgeable and friendly. They explained, answered questions, asked about my family and where I was from and worked relevant info into their explanations, etc. The buildings are well-maintained and, though there was some construction, it was easy to get around. Highly recommended to any history buffs in the area; worth a side trip if you're anywhere nearby.

Heritage Hill was an amazing venue for our wedding. We did our ceremony at the top of the park during sunset - it was so beautiful. Guests loved wandering the park before the ceremony too! We planned our wedding from across the country which would have been tough, but Early was so great to work with -- they were very flexible! On the day of, staff offered their help readily from start to finish. The only difficult thing was timing. You're not allowed to set up the night before - on the day of you start load-in at 2pm, and all things had to be out by midnight that night. This left for a bit of a chaotic set up and tear down on the day of the wedding. But if you have limited decor and helpful friends/family, it works. Having a planner/additional staff to help set up may also be a good option.

Beautiful setting on a beautiful day July 2018. We were married at this venue at heritage hill. We couldn't have had a better day. The staff was amazing and they even cut the grass for us very happy with the whole thing.

Great place to get a glimpse of history of Wisconsin,and lots of fun stuff and great reenactment. And they have crafts for the kids and super friendly staff!!

Best to avoid this overpriced attraction staffed by out of work and over indulged college students who sigh and indifferently agree to speak with you for exactly 17 seconds before they sit down. Park is in constant state of disrepair and I just hope that they don't get ahold of your name as they will incessantly hound you for money (which ends up in their foundation managed by one of their board members who refuses to allow the park to spend it on upkeep).

The staff members at Heritage Hill were great to work with for our May wedding. We planned our wedding from Arizona, so they were very good about staying in contact with us. The staff on site for the wedding was helpful and really wanted to assist in making sure our day went smoothly. Because this is a state park with historical buildings, they were very firm as to what you could do and could not do in terms of decorations. In addition, the times available for when you can get into the park and set up are limited, so be sure to plan very well ahead of time. Overall, we were very pleased with our experience and the guests had a wonderful time taking in the views.

I love going to this place though out the year. It's family friendly, the events are fun, and it's worth the investment.

We had a beautiful wedding here. The event planner Kathaleen was very laid back and easy to work with. Amazing park with great views for an OUTSTANDING price! My tent wedding on the garden patio was a dream come true! Thank you Heritage Hill you will always be a special place for us to visit!

We had our wedding in the restored Moravian Church, and the setting was beautiful. Very simple furnishings inside, grand piano and organ. They're sticklers as far as time limits, so be prepared. Overall, a great experience.
