Where to Find Birthday Freebies in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Pastini fans may remember when this Oregon-based Italian chain offered a full-on entree for birthday visitors; while those days are gone, customers can still get a free dessert after a birthday meal, be it a slab of tiramisu or a scoop of gelato. The restaurant’s chocolate tartufo — chocolate cake with a chocolate truffle center — may be the move, in terms of sheer decadence. Pastini operates locations throughout Portland, as well as cities like Eugene and Bend."

I loved, loved, loved this place. We stayed at the Paramount hotel across the way for one night, and I am so glad we came here out of all the area’s choices. I had the linguini with shrimp scampi, which was so lemony and delicious. I want to return. My daughter had ravioli and we shared a tiramisu that absolutely agreed with my taste buds - just a dash of sweet (in a current world where everything is overly sweet). The wine and bread were very good, atmosphere was excellent, just small enough to be comfortable, and food was fast. Very well done!

Google
I love this place!! Its in my neighborhood. Its great Italian food. A simple menu. The garlic bread is really good. I ordered the baked ziti w/ sausage. It was delicious. Great staff. Wonderful, clean atmosphere. And at a reasonable price. This is my Italian spot for sure!!

Google
The waitress Jordan took care of me. She is so friendly and informative and recommended the best dishes. The food was well made, and put together and had a beautiful artistic feel as well. 10/10 recommend

Google
Fod was great! Service was friendly and she gave us great advise! Unfortunately never recieved any refills on drinks but everything else was on point.

Traveling in the area came across this restaurant. Found it had a nice selection of items on the menu. I had a wonderful pasta dish full of flavor and big enough that I had leftovers for later. My seasonal zero proof drink was delicious. The atmosphere was inviting and service was good!

Google
Craving Italian carbs? You found the right place. Located diagonally across the street from the Paramount Hotel on SW Taylor & walking distance to Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall & the Portland Art Museum, this pasta eatery is a busy local restaurant offering a variety of traditional standards & contemporary entrees, salads, antipasto, zuppa, etc. Quality ingredients; some sauces were a bit salty but overall tasty; pastas generally adequate but chain restaurant level; medium portions; friendly service; loud noise level when busy; casual vibe; open air dining room; limited outdoor sidewalk tables; good luck with paid parallel street parking or several parking garages close by; always be on alert due to many homeless drug addicts roaming the neighborhood; relatively affordable option before a concert.

Google
Food and service was great and prices were as well! Loved the light sauce on the pasta, fresh bread and the Lemon vinegarette! This place was so good came back a 2nd night and was not disappointed at all!

Google
I believe tiramisu reigns supreme above all other desserts. So much so that I would actually board a flight to Italy for a truly authentic sampling. Since such a sojourn is not feasible at this time, I have discovered after scouring the Portland metro area, arguably, the PNW's tiramisu ruler, and it surpasses all expectations. From the mascarpone to the lady fingers, each fluffy, consumed morsel excites the senses. Half the sizable serving was gone before I realized how much I had devoured. I polished off the remainder the next evening, and to my utter delight and surprise, it was even better chilled. Italy certainly is not out of the question, but an extraordinary example at a reasonable price is just a short jaunt away. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
My girlfriend has celiac so we landed at Pastini based on their gluten free options. We really enjoyed our experience. Our meal was delicious. Server was welcoming and had great suggestions for us (as visitors from out of state). We would definitely return.

Yelp
We were in town for the weekend because I was running a half marathon there. As such, I was in carb loading mode and wanted pasta. We found this place on Yelp and it had good ratings, plus it was close to our hotel so we decided to give it a try. It lived up to the good ratings! In fact we enjoyed it so much that we went back for dinner the next night too! We got there after the dinner rush both nights so we did not have to wait for a table. Upon sitting down we both noticed the decor and the atmosphere. Perfect for a date night or dinner with a friend. Our server, Alexandra, was very friendly and helpful. She went over the menu with us and recommended some wines. We had a glass of the Shallow Seas Rosé and the DiLenardo Pinot Grigio. Both were great! For our meals the first night, I ordered the braised short rib ravioli and my friend ordered the tortellini Gorgonzola with chicken. Our meals came out in a timely manner and both dishes were excellently prepared! So full of flavor! We were thoroughly delighted! The next night when we went back, it was more of the same great service (from Alexandra again), and atmosphere. This time I ordered spaghetti and meatballs which was perfect the night before the race. My friend ordered the mac & cheese. Again we thoroughly enjoyed our meals just like the night before! If you are looking for a good Italian meal in downtown Portland, look no further than Pastini!

Yelp
We came here for dinner and had a really nice experience! I ordered the spicy shrimp fettuccine -- it wasn't super spicy, but it was so good. The flavors were rich and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. I also had a salad- super fresh and well-balanced. The staff was great too -- really friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Overall, it was a lovely meal in a nice atmosphere.

Yelp
We came into this restaurant before a show, and our timing was perfect. We were seated after only a 15-minute wait following a quick name placement. Since we had already reviewed the menu and needed to maintain a brisk pace to make our show, we had our orders ready. Our server approached our table almost immediately; she was friendly and appreciative that we had our orders prepared for her. Our drinks were served quickly, and she proactively offered refills. The food was delicious--the Caprese salad was amazing and flavorful, and the pasta dishes were equally good. This is a place I would absolutely revisit. It's a perfect, convenient spot for a nice pre-show dinner, particularly if you are going to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. I was very pleased with the entire experience and would certainly return.

Yelp
I live in Beaverton and genuinely have become a huge fan of Pastini when I get delivery because it is always accurate and delicious. I have 'my order' but I cannot get the kids menu when sitting in the restaurant as I want a smaller portion. I just wanted to be upfront with how I do things... I go to a lot of events at the Schnitzer which is 2 blocks away. White Bird dance performances have a relationship with 4 different restaurants downtown, including this Pastini. Their discount is wonderful at 20% off within the week of your tickets which is so great because going to dinner before a show that night is a messy thing to do. I want to enjoy my dinner, not have to drop the leftovers at the car etc... My tickets for that show are Wednesday but on Saturday me and a friend were going to see a quartet performance nearby fairly early, leaving us free for dinner around 5pm. We decided to give it a go and had that realization of how busy they would be but genuinely was told it would be ten minutes and it really was! A lot of times you get told that and an hour later... so I really appreciate an accurate time table. I also appreciate fast service and friendly service. She was amazing and got us accurate answers to our inquiries, My friend is a vegan and loved the amount of options and also that she was getting such great input like, "Hay, other vegans order this a lot...". My friend explained that she is not allergic and is not bit psycho about her veganism etc... I loved that the waitress said she wanted to honor her food choices regardless. Unfortunately they ran out of garlic bread but I was not mad about the vat of their regular bread I was given. Having just seen a Russian composer I went for their stroganoff with a side of sautéed spinach. A favorite thing of mine with Pastini is that they have all these incredible vegetable sides with truly perfectly cooked vegetables. Pro tip - order the veggie medley or sautéed spinach to eat with your pasta. So beyond amazing! I am not big into chain restaurants but this really is such a great chain though I do suggest a reservation during busy times though we did get in just fine but that is easier with a party of two.

Yelp
Went after most people would have had lunch. So fairly quiet! For an Italian restaurant food came out fast. Ice tea was excellent as was the lemonade with free refills. Everyone's food was very tasty and more than enough for a lunch meal. Tomato sauce was as good as homemade, spicy sauce was great coupled with perfectly cooked noodles. Nice croutons on the well dressed salads. Will we go back, you betcha. I don't know how they do lunches for $13.00 a person. By the way the place is spotless.
google avatar

Yelp
The short rib ravioli was really good. The meat inside was very flavorful the sauce tasted really good dipping the bread in. Our server was extremely nice. Will definitely revisit whenever I'm in town

Yelp
A haiku review: Yum, ceaser salad Perfectly dressed and delish Next up? The pastas The fettuccine So cheesy, incredible Always hits the spot

Yelp
I came to Pastini in late December. I honestly had a great experience. Although I came just an hour before closing, I was warmly welcomed by Nick, who also recommended a great local beer that perfectly complemented my meal. The food was delicious, and I appreciated the inviting atmosphere inside the restaurant. Although I'm not sure if I'll be back in Oregon, but I'll definitely be back if I do!

Yelp
Just stopped by the Downtown Pastini for lunch, it was excellent! The food and service, perfect like it always has been. This place is very consistent! Right next to the Wednesday Farmers Market at Shemanski Park, you couldn't find a cooler lunch spot. Good prices too! Great waiter, bright Lemon Drop...and ole Downtown sure did look happenin', people were all over the streets... I think we're getting there...

Yelp
grabbed lunch here on a monday afternoon, got there right before the lunch rush. nice, lively ambiance. our server rachel was quick and efficient, and had a great attitude despite the rush. we ordered the baked cheese ravioli and spaghetti carbonara lunch specials, both served with tomato soup and a piece of bread. the meal itself was quite nice, but i felt that it was just a bit bland and the bread would've been better toasted. enjoyable nonetheless, and the food came out pretty quick.

Yelp
Walking into this spot, I felt underdressed as it was a bit more upscale (paper napkins so I didn't run) but the bright hostess and stellar server made us feel at home. Now...the food. We ordered the bistro salad and besides the wonderful greens, it was lightly drenched in dressing and adorned with diced tomatoes, bacon, and eggs. Fantastic to the last bite. I love lasagna. This 5 cheese lasagna is SMOTHERED in a brilliant portobello mushroom marinara. The noodles were fat and the cheese abundant! At the end, my wife had ordered some garlic bread which we used to greedily mop up the extra sauce. I would have. Licked the plate if it was appropriate.

Yelp
Decided to check out Pastini after a four hour tour. We were warmly greeted by our server, Stephanie, who was very kind and patient as we needed some time to decide our order. My mother and I decided to split the chicken and white wine sauce and a small Caesar salad. It was a busy Saturday night, so we waited a while for our food, but it was worth it as our food was very good. The sauce on the pasta was super light and not salty. The capers helped add something extra to the broccolini, chicken, and angel hair pasta. I thought it could've used some more garlic and pepper as I like my pasta dishes a little more spicier. However, it still was very good. And I liked that it is a locally owned Italian restaurant. Last, their wine list was a great mix of local and internationally owned wines. I checked out their rosé blend, which was okay by itself, but the food made it even better.
google avatar

Holly H.

Yelp
The place is cute, very well located and I REALLY appreciate that none of the ingredients had soy! However, our server forgot everything I asked her to bring (extra dressing for the salad) and I felt that everything from the salads to the pasta were substandard. E we got a simple pasta that has so much garlic it was almost inedible. And I'm not sure about this but it just seems like boxed pasta...I could be wrong. It was very al dente. The salads some how seemed unexciting. Just cut up lettuce with dressing and there wasn't enough. But my kids ate everything! So that's good! I probably won't ever go back though. There are too many other good places
google avatar

Yelp
First time to this location. Great fast service. Nice wine list. Many gluten free pasta options. Both my friend and I got fettuccine Alfredo. She got hers with shrimp. It was a delicious garlicky Alfredo. I got a capresse salad. Has outdoor seating and indoor. Went and hour before closing and a more intimate experience.

Yelp
This isn't Italian food. More like a more expensive version of the Spaghetti factory. Ordered Aglio i olio and received a plate of overcooked noodles in a raw garlic and water sauce. No one checked to see how it was until long after a real aglio i olio dish would have gone cold. It was basically inedible. Manager was nice and offered something else or a dessert but i just paid and left. I won't be back. If you want something approaching Italian food look elsewhere.

Yelp
Great vegetarian options! Go for the Gorgonzola sauce stuffed tortaleni . Get a side of garlic bread

Yelp
Great lunch prices - good Italian food . Pleasant attentive staff. Relaxed and laid back

Yelp
We had lunch at this Italian Restaurant in downtown Portland. The $13.00 lunch menu gave you a wide variety of choices. We had the Spaghetti Carbonara and the chicken and vegetable soup. Both were excellent and I highly recommend trying it. The restaurant was pleasant and not too busy for lunch. The decor was elegant, but not over done. Seating was plentiful and spacious. We had a nice glass of Chardonnay also.
google avatar

Yelp
There was no line on a Saturday around dinner time which is usually a big red flag for me but we were hungry so we were grateful to be sat right away. Our waiter was disinterested and forgot our appetizer but the food was edible, I guess. I have no idea where all these stars come from as I've had better tasting meals and better service at somewhere like the Olive Garden but it really bummed me out because we really like to support local/regional places when we travel.
google avatar

Breanna C.

Yelp
Their Garlic Bread is to die for! Quick service and fun slightly fancy but not too serious of a vibe.

Izzy S.

Yelp
Placed an order for pickup, and was terribly disappointed when I opened the containers up. The bolognese was barely present and the noodles dry as if it were the end of the night leftover product. My husband's spaghetti looked and tasted nothing more than something you would purchase out the freezer section from your local grocery. It's unfortunate because we've always had positive experiences prior--however, for $50 this was not quality food.
google avatar

Pious T.

Yelp
Fantastic Ceasars salad for delivery, and large portions. Delivery was pretty fast, and they were very communicative.

Yelp
Some of the best pasta I've ever had. The restaurant was beautiful and the service was good. Great wine too. No complaints.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while looking for dinner. It was good. The service was great and it was not super busy on a Friday night!
google avatar

Mia H.

Yelp
I came here one evening as a solo date and the ambiance was a very nice, chill place to grab dinner! I had a super sore throat and was unable to speak loudly to anyone, but both the waiter and host were so sweet and understanding. Their menu is quite varied, but I ended up choosing the butternut squash ravioli. The food took a while to come out, and the portion was alright for the price. The ravioli itself was okay. Although it wasn't bad, it was too greasy for me and I felt as if they put way too much cheese into the dish. Overall, the place wasn't bad but I feel like there are better pasta places in downtown Portland.
google avatar

Erica A.

Yelp
Fast service! Excellent food. We ordered the chicken Alfredo and spaghetti and meatballs. Great prices for the quality of food.
google avatar

Amy A.

Yelp
The service was prompt and friendly. The Parisian bread with roasted tomatoes marinara was so tasty. The Shrimp was tender and properly cooked. The carb coma was delicious and definitely worth it. Would definitely go back and would recommend.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
The fettuccini was everyone's favorite. Usually the chicken is always dry and no flavor with the sauce but at Pastini it was a burst of flavor and juicy! I was so shocked because I always get disappointed with adding meat to my pasta. I wish we could've ordered another fettuccini. The sauce was immaculate. The spaghetti with shrimp and tomato sounded good but was just a bunch of oil. It was very hard to eat and hurt my stomach after. Got garlic bread as well and it was burnt and no garlic flavor to it :( Do not recommend. Chicken Caesar Salad, I would recommend! The sauce is lemony and that's what I like when ordering a caesar. The croutons are super crunchy and yummy. If you like it more saucy you should order another sauce. They already give you 2.
google avatar

Alexander T.

Yelp
I came to this casual yet cozy italian restaurant with my girlfriend in search of some tasty food. Fortunately, we found it! We ordered the spaghetti carbonara and the fettuccine alfredo with a side of garlic bread. Our plates were clean by the end of our meal. Our waitress was attentive and considerate, and overall everyone was very welcoming! In terms of italian cuisine, Pastini may be the go-to.
google avatar

Francesco L.

Yelp
Service was great the entire time! The garlic bread appetizer was great, especially with the fettuccine dipping sauce! The fettuccine Alfredo and wine were both excellent as well. Definitely will be back next time in Portland!!
google avatar

Yelp
I am in town for a work conference and we came here last night! It was fantastic food! The asparagus salad was amazing! We had the meatballs which were slightly dry, the tortolini, butternut squash ravioli and the spicy spaghetti! All of it was great! The service was awesome we had a very patient waiter and he guided us well! We also had the chocolate cake and cookie gelato for dinner it was soooo yummy! The ambience was perfect- great for a Thursday night evening! Would def come back!
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
A nice place downtown in a little less hectic of an area. Right near the downtown library so that was a plus. They do a good $13 lunch special which is good value but their dinner prices aren't unreasonable. The food was well prepared and tasty and the service was excellent.
google avatar

LeeAnn G.

Yelp
They seriously need to hire a bartender and a bussperson. The entry was full of people and there were multiple tables vacant around us. We only waited about 20 minutes for a table but could have been seated much sooner. The Manhattan I ordered was very watered down. Our starter salads were wonderful but then we waited and waited for our entrees. We finally asked the hostess to check in them since we hadn't see our server for awhile. Our server delivered our entrees not long after that but one of the two was cold to the touch (ravioli). We sent that one back and waited some more for a replacement. Then we saw it sitting on the kitchen pass area waiting to be delivered to our table. It sat there for long enough that the kitchen staff started looking for the waitress. I caught their eye and motioned that it was for me. They helpfully called for someone to bring it to our table. The ravioli was very good but, wow, what an ordeal to get our meal. AND they ran out of garlic bread- before 7pm on a Saturday night. Maybe they need a new manager? No concessions for our sub par experience either. Won't be coming back.

Ryan F.

Yelp
Good food and service we were in a bit of a rush on our way to a show. It was busy but they sat us quickly .
google avatar

Randi E.

Yelp
Mmmmmm!!! My mouth waters thinking about their garlic bread. And any pasta dish is going to make you smile and spontaneously hum as you eat. They have great lunch specials and do an amazing job with large group orders if you need to host a group.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
Pastini, the little pasta that has a big impact. I ordered the lunch combo menu for $13 which included pasta, bread, and soup. (You can get a salad in lieu of the soup). You definitely want to take advantage of this price point for you are getting your money's worth. I ate the linguini al gorgonzola and it was absolutely sensational. The creamy sauce was perfect with the rest of the pasta dish. The sauce was not watery, but very potent. Each bite had the proper amount of mushrooms and peas to give it some texture. I also ate the ziti with italian sausage, garden vegetables. Again, the mixture of ingredients was the right mixing that led to a wonderful sound in your mouth. The amount of food you get was great because you felt full but not bloated. This is key to a pasta spot. Pastini you bring some italy to the city of Portland.
google avatar

Monique C.

Yelp
The service was amazing! The food was lacking in flavor in my opinion. Also the salad portion was HUGE however it didn't taste like anything! Meaning the dressing was bland, and even adding pickled onions ( which I'm not a fan of) still couldn't save the salad! I did however like the appetizer we ordered the Roasted Artichoke-Spinach Spread with Bruschetta, it was good!

Erica C.

Yelp
Doesn't look at all like the picture of the dish . The winter special . Mostly pasta . No meat . Super disappointing . Won't be back

Amanda O.

Yelp
I usually love this place! And I order from here regularly. However, tonight I went to eat my tiramisu and there was a very long blonde hair in the inside of the tiramisu. I was disgusted.
google avatar

Candice S.

Yelp
It wasn't bad. We found this place while walking around downtown Portland. It was good. Not great. It wasn't like... We have to come back good. It was like... we're hungry they're open and the food is fine. Service was great!

Cici G.

Yelp
I've had pastini plenty of times but never went inside to the restaurant and I wasn't disappointed at all. Hannah my server was excellent. Spaghetti and meatballs: 3.5/5 they had a special for $10. The meatballs were seasoned well and had a good flavor to them, not undercooked or overcooked. The sauce could do well with a little more seasoning but overall a solid meal Ceaser salad: 2.5/5 way too much cheese and dressing, the greens were soggy which was very disappointing Drink, Made Manhattan: 5/5 delicious Overall: 4/5

Yelp
Best Italian food I ever had. Me and my husband travel all the way from Texas just to eat the delicious meat balls and marinara. I wanna swim in that sauce

Yelp
The fettuccine alfredo with shrimp was delicious! It's not the best I've ever had (that was in Pisa), but it was amazing. The staff who answered the phone were great and allowed me to order pickup by phone. Great service and reliable food. Fettuccine Alfredo

Yelp
Visiting Pastini for the first time was splendid ! In a convenient location, we came to try out Pastini for date night and it surely didn't disappoint . The restaurant itself is beautiful and welcoming along with the staff . Our waitress was kind and accommodating . Not only do they offer pasta of all varieties but their appetizer menu and drink selection was vast as well . The food was exceptional and tasted fresh ! They generously gave us great portion sizes that included a side salad and roll of bread . If you're looking for a pleasant afternoon check out Pastini's ! Our order - - Appetizer : ROASTED ARTICHOKE-SPINACH SPREAD WITH BRUSCHETTA | " Creamy roasted artichoke hearts, garlic, and spinach, blended with Italian cheeses " $9.75 | - Entree : FIVE CHEESE LASAGNA WITH MEAT SAUCE | " Portobello mushrooms, ricotta, fontina, provolone, mozzarella, parmesan " $13 | - BAKED CHEESE RAVIOLI | " Tomatoes, spinach & three cheeses " $13 | served with salad or soup | - Drinks : LUCCA'S LEMONADE | " Absolut Citron, limoncello, lemon soda over ice " $9.75 | - MOJITO | " Muddled organic mint, fresh lime, rum " $ 9.75 |

Yelp
Ok so I got a little excited about tasting my short rib ravioli before I remembered to take a photo! Had to do a little rearranging on my plate! Ever done that?! It wasn't quite what I was expecting, however. It was hard to tell it had short rib meat in it because the filling was puréed into a paste. If I didn't know what I was eating I don't think I could guess what it was, sadly. Don't get me wrong-it all tasted good, but I don't think it was worth $22. Therefore I don't think I would order it again. My friend had been looking forward to the butternut squash ravioli, and she was not disappointed. I got the tiramisu for desert. It was light and creamy, and not too sweet, which I appreciated. The portion was generous. My friend ordered the chocolate chip cookie with vanilla gelato. She also got one of the Oregon wine specials, which she was happy with. For a chain restaurant, Pastini is nice (a step up from Olive Garden), with tasteful ambiance (we were at the SE 20th & Division location), and our server was attentive and friendly.

Steve H.

Yelp
Updated review Pastini reached out and offered us a full refund which is very kind. Definitely won't be back unless I'm in the area and need a quick dinner but I would highly recommend Pastini increase their portion sizes.

Yelp
Definitely a foodie joint! The spaghetti con gamberetti had a slightly savory/sweet flavor to it. The sauce was awesome to lap up with bread. And the place was beautiful. Can't wait to see it during Spring!
