Visitors tempted to do Walmart or Safeway should stop here first. Prices (Feb 2025): $8/gal for milk, $5/lb ground beef, $4/lb broccoli.

Hawaii’s supermarket. I think it might of originated in Hawaii. Lots of fresh produce, freshly baked goods, hot foods prepared daily, along with your standard groceries. So there’s a bakery, deli, and pharmacy also in this store. We visited this store about 3 times during our vacation and also encountered friendly and hospitable staff. There’s lots of free parking and there’s lots of stores, restaurants, and a movie theater in the same plaza. Keauhou Shopping Plaza. And you can’t miss this plaza, for it located right off the main roads. Also there’s some spectacular sunset from this place. Side note: there’s a free Hula show every Friday night around 5 or 6pm in the courtyard.

This was the first place we went after arriving in Hawai’i, as it was a five minute drive from our hotel and we needed groceries for the week. It’s my understanding that everything in Hawai’i is a little more expensive than where I’m from - and that was the case here as well. We were able to get groceries for the week for the two of us for about $80. (Nothing fancy - mostly stuff to pack lunches for beach days.) The produce section was nice, there’s a swimming gear aisle - we bought cheap scuba masks here near the end of our stay. There’s a small selection of souvenirs and an Asian food aisle. The staff were friendly, there’s convenient parking and you get a small discount for bringing your own bags. The photos are most of what we bought back in our hotel. We also got ramen, apple bananas, pop tarts, chips, and tater tots. $84. Not too bad for Hawai’i and we got four lunches each out of it plus breakfast for most of the days and some snacks.

My favorite KTA!!! 😍😍👌🔥❤️ The view in the parking lot is Kool.. And I loved these masks! They are super CUTE!!👌😃💕 Good source of local and Asian foods. I like the local dragon fruit they sometimes have. I also like warabi/ fern shoots they have.

Hit the Safeway when we first landed because KTA was closed, but was so happy to patronize the KTA afterwards. Amazing poke bar, amazing local prepared foods. And oh so much spam. Great beer selection as well as Japanese snacks. This store makes me happy.

Google
I bought Korean Marlin Poké from KTA Palani that wasn’t good. I went back to KTA Keauhou and found out each KTA makes Poké according to their own recipe. I was offered a sample to make sure: Wow, Keauhou’s Poké is amazing. Their deli staff was so helpful. I was also looking for a special ingredient for Chinese sticky rice, dried lotus blossoms that I couldn’t find. She walked me over to the dried Chinese ingredients. When we didn’t find it, she went back to the warehouse stockers to find out if they carried it. Such caring and friendly service!❤️

Google
Loveeed this grocery store! I came here about every other day during my trip. The poke is so good!! It was about $16 for rice, spicy tuna, and marinated spicy salmon (my fave). The ube mochi donut balls are also a MUST. I still think about them all the time. I would go back to Kona just for those!! Sushi is also great. And of course lots of great snacks, souvenirs (I got a few magnets), and everything you could need.

Google
I had one chef salad from the cooler there this afternoon. Please check your inventory. No toilet has been safe since then.

Yelp
One stop Shopping for all the essential items needed for a week or two on the big island. Take home some Hawaiian coffee- get it here for the best prices All fruits and vegetables are very fresh and reasonably priced.

Judy W.

Yelp
Great variety and wide number of choices available. The staff really look out for individual tips to make shopping easier Ready to help at any point in every spot of the store. They walked us to the product we were seeking rather than just pointing or identifying aisle! Fun to shop

Tess R.

Yelp
Very friendly staff and awesome poke! Pretty full selection of anything you need without the corporate soul-less-ness of safeway. And local is good!

Ted O.

Yelp
Best Supermarket in Kona! Great selection of local foods and the service was excellent. I'm a visitor from Oahu and really enjoyed my visit here.

Brian G.

Yelp
I am just so pleased to have found this store. It's just up the road from the condo we are staying at for a few weeks and it's been a lifesaver. It's not a huge store, but it's well stocked with all manner of food including much of the local fare like fresh fish, Poke etc. the prices are about average, but it definitely beats spending an afternoon of my limited time here tracking through a name brand store. Just because you're shopping on vacation doesn't mean you can't enjoy it.

Isabelle R.

Yelp
Best poke on the island not gonna lie. Super clean inside and have good selections of drinks too. Good stop before beach.

Kaleo P.

Yelp
What can I say...KTA does not disappoint! It is my favorite grocery store and it is locally owned. You can find everything here and the staff is friendly and professional. The prices are reasonable and much cheaper than Safeway! Highly recommend!

Grant M.

Yelp
Good selection and friendly helpful employees. If you want donuts don't go anywhere else, their bakery makes some of the best I've ever had. And they have Lion mac nut vanilla coffee, cold in a can, to wash it all down. Great store!

Leslie H.

Yelp
Excellent poke selection. Ate here three times over the course of a week stay in Kona. Friendly staff. Easy parking and accessible location.

Jim C.

Yelp
Local market with a reasonably broad selection of items. Island prices are generally pricier than mainland. Signed up for store discount card to save some extra money. We were able to get everything we needed. But still went to local farmers markets to pick up a variety of inexpensive tropical fruits. This market is in a large shopping center with a variety of other stores (pharmacy, jewelry, art, etc), restaurants, and a movie theatre. Plus nearby gas station. Store was clean and had a very friendly greeter on entry and exit. I quizzed him as to where in store was produce and other items. He was knowledgeable as to where everything was which saved us time. I'll definitely come back.

Jenn N.

Yelp
What do you do when everyone is out of eggs and don't carry La Croix? Go to KTA. They have plenty of both. I have visited this store about a dozen times. Every single one of the employees have always been above & beyond nice. They have wonderful pastries, sushi, and pre-packaged sandwiches to grab & go to the beach. They have a plentiful selection of booze at reasonable prices. I may or may not have purchased a $2.00 floatie for the pool....for myself. They have a large selection of seafood, both fresh & frozen. Bring your own bag, wear a mask for pandemic safety, and enjoy. Aloha!

Sasha Z.

Yelp
Friendly staff and a good selection of veggies and fruits! Very convenient to get staples like rice, condiments, juice, etc since it was walking distance next to where we stayed! Delicious, fresh poke that tastes comparable to poke stops like Da Poke Shack for a fraction of the price! The first few days on the island, my family drove to restaurants for poke, but the last few days we just got our poke from KTA! I recommend the Salmon Wasabi here.

Yelp
To quote the immortal Steely Dan, sometimes life calls for the need to 'Dine Behind The Wheel' ('Deacon Blues', from Aja, 1977). Yesterday was one of those days. Bouncing from errand to errand, a familiar stop at KTA included the pleasures of locally-grown gargantuan Sharwils (avocados), a mandatory trip to the seafood section (calamari steaks, black cod, salmon bellies, local ono, fresh and frozen), and the deli section for some takeaway on-the-go Dine Behind the Wheel fare. No time to spare. Most of it either overpriced or uninspiring. Then one item leapt out at me. Behind the thin clear plastic wrap, a hulking, unruly mass of marinated beef, grilled onions, red bell peppers, green peppers, and some white colored cheese that had a consistency of semi-melted (or was it sauce?!?) threatening to escape a semi-soft, partially toasted roll that wasn't quite a foot-long, yet looked to be quite the motorcar meal. 'Karl's Kitchen, Miscellaneous', the sticker label reads. 'Miscellaneous?!?' Could I at least get a tiny hint or qualifier as to what that is? Never ever EVER seen that on a takeaway deli food label. Lazy labeler? One with a wicked sense of humor? WYSIWYG? Fuck Around and Find Out? All of the Above? And who the Fuck is Karl? He has a Kitchen Somewhere? Where? Hmmm. And what IS this thing? A 'Philly Cheesesteak?' Perhaps. But it has more of a KBBQ consistency to the meat. Definitely more fusion than Philly. It's Hawaii. Surprised? About to grab it. Yet, trying to adhere to Meat Holiday mode these days. Haven't been able to make the break completely, despite dietary and moral motivations to go fully plant-based, I realized a mostly pescatarian lifestyle is a more reasonable reality (dietary and moral concerns aside, i am hopelessly trapped in a sushi and fishy addiction-esque thug life and probably will have to abide these addictions for who knows how long). Hmm, well, an occasional meat excursion, or micro-dalliance. Gotta be honest, that's where it's at. Yes, self-loathing, but in acceptance mode. Grab the slightly warm, slightly gooey, yet semi-firm mess, and GO. On the road. Meat. Tender, Chewy. Not too much fat/tendon. Thankfully. Just Enough. Grilled Peppers and Onions, soft, but not slimy. A bit of crunchiness still. Cheese, yes, as imagined, part cheese and part sauce from being pressed inside the unruly mess. Bread. Holds up but most of the contents burst out of it, sparing my shirt but causing quite the splatter of veggies and stray meat strands, but deftly grabbed and collected before the precious seats are stained and slippage into car crevasses avoided. It helps that this delicious mess wasn't so messy after all, mostly due to it not being over-sauced like many many sandwiches are. Carl's Jr./Hardees, I'm lookin' at you... Meant to post a pic of this 'Karl's Kitchen Miscellaneous' Monster, but I was Dining Behind the Wheel. SAFETY FIRST. Hands were not Free. DONE!

Yelp
The best grocery store chain on the Island, and perhaps the best of their stores. Huge selection, extremely friendly staff who will go out of their way to be helpful, great prices for the Island, and a lot of discounts on the shelves. KTA also supports the Island community more than any other grocery store (and perhaps more than any other business on the Island) due to partnering to provide more local items, and giving back to the Island. Simply the best.

Shantell C.

Yelp
Typical KTA supermarket with your fresh meat, deli, bakery and poke bar. I noticed this location had a more extensive alcohol section as it was everywhere. The fresh poke was Ono but the dry aku looked a little sketch.

Marcie P.

Yelp
Such a lovely KTA. So organized, well stocked, friendly staff and very local. They consistently are happy to bag your groceries and separate items out that may be needed for various reasons. You can even talk story with the staff and learn meaningful Hawaiian history. Love, love this KTA!

John T.

Yelp
KTA you made our stay incredible in Kona! Love this store for their local vibe and friendly staff. Their fresh deli and Poke were our go -to quick meals during our stay. The prices are great and it sure made our stay more enjoyable because we were able to eat well at a lower price tag. We never had to resort to eating at the tourist traps by the water. The money we saved was appreciated. The Poke is by far the best in town. Thanks KTA!!

Kay R.

Yelp
Good local grocery store that carries pretty much all your needs. Clean and friendly, helpful staff. Our number 1 go to store when we are on island.

Dalilah M.

Yelp
Always found KTA to have the best prices on spirulina products, even back when I lived here (better than Island Natural in Kona). But aloha ice tea is 5.79 where its 3.48 at Walmart.

Chewie N.

Yelp
I love this grocery store. Every fruit I picked today was duly ripe and fresh. I made a fruit bowl and everyone loved it. Dragonfruit, starfruit, papaya, mango, Maui pineapple. It was all good. They even have ube kringle which js a family favorite. My friend bought some super cute on-sale thermos and stationery gifts (I saw the same at the airport for more than double the price). It's a good local grocery that has a little bit of everything.

Jeff K.

Yelp
Decent prices on groceries here with a large selection. Tip#1 any phone number should get you the store club savings at the counter. Tip#2 The Ahi Poke bowls here are fat and on point if fresh. If your in town make sure it's made fresh and remember what's there. The next time you come you'll remember if it's new. Ive seen certain poke be brought out day after day and never changed. Nothing like a bowl of poke to start the day!

Tim O.

Yelp
The in place to buy groceries in the area. They have a nice selection of staples, sandwiches and, wine, beer and liquor. A bit expensive but we're in Kona.

Thomas C.

Yelp
Solid place to get basics while visiting Hawaii. Best option in that area without driving up to around Walmart

Aldouse H.

Yelp
KTA = the main-local "Foodland" and "Safeway" in Big Island. Store is clean and has everything i'm looking for in terms of groceries. Their poke is delish and price for value far exceeds many restaurants and other places. Minus 1 star because they either sell out or dont have Musubis available when the times i went.

LeRoy K.

Yelp
Very friendly store with lots of unique Hawaiian culture foods (ALL the cultures of Hawaii) plus very good local produce and many locally-produced specialty foods. It also has the "normal" grocery store fare (milk, eggs, bread, meat).88

Marlui A.

Yelp
They have the cutest sticker souvenirs to give away. Good deli, poke and kalbi! Many other things to get! Wish they had oat milk! Everyone friendly and helpful! Thank you to the gentleman outside who reminds everyone to sanitize!

Eva H.

Yelp
KTA was my favorite grocery till today. I went to shopping with my 8 month golden retriever. He is registered as Emotional Support Dog. I was stopped in the entrance ,because the stuff doesn't have any education. They don't know the support and emotional dog is the same. I have to leave my puppy in the hot car. It was my last shopping in this grocery. Never more !!!!!

Viv C.

Yelp
Great place to go to supplement our Costco trips. I mean who really needs a whole jug of oil when you're only staying for a week. Or any other condiment or seasonings? Got some Asian food, drinks, and side dishes too! It's a great find since it was so close to our lodgings. We came several times during the week just to see what else they carried at different times during the day.

William B.

Yelp
Remember, anything heavy shipped from mainland is going to be expensive! Except Spam. For some reason, its cheaper here. Anyway, Buy and eat local! However, watch those produce prices, the farmers markets around here offer far lower prices on papayas, ginger, pineapple, etc. Love this KTA - lots of fresh fish, poke (ahi, marlin, tako), sushi ingredients (even tubs of Ikura and Tobiko, yum!) asian items, and hot deli. Look for Mountain Apple brand macadamia/almond nut shortbread; OMG!!! expensive @ $7.99, but....OMG! A new favorite is the Korean Chix Leg meat in the meat counter, one piece will feed two 'average adults'. Its FANTASTIC on the BBQ grill, super easy! The marinated beef is good too. Friendly employees. I always bring a few shopping bags in my luggage cause i know im loading up on groceries here. Here's my 'beef' about KTA tho; even though theres a plastic bag ban, they automatically wrap frozen and meat items in a mini-junky plastic bag - you practically have to yell at them to not do it - its so automatic. And all the poke/meat items i adore, come in wretched plastic. Come on KTA, lead with innovative non-plastic ideas. Hence, we stay at 4 stars. Great coupon deals - but you have to have the paper coupons (archaic these days) They also have beach supplies and fishing gear/tackle.

Charles P.

Yelp
KTA (or Taniguchi's, as our family has always called it), is our favorite local supermarket. We have shopped here since ever since, and it's one of the three stores we buy our groceries at. KTA is a locally owned store that has been around for 100 years (1916), and has 6 locations on the island. They have many local products you won't find at bigger chain conglomerate supermarkets. They are very active in the community and give back a lot. I like to keep my money local when I can, and their prices are comparable to all the other supermarkets, so there is no need to worry about "shopping around". Even if things may be a few cents more, I would rather see that money stay here on the island. I like the poke station, the bakery, and they have an amazing beer and sake section. They make a good breakfast bento, and I think they made the best long johns in town.

Janice O.

Yelp
Fantastic bento varieties IF you go before 10 am otherwise be sad that they're all gone! That popular and obviously tasty! The breadth of assortment varies store by store as well as the displays. Basically a solid all around grocery store with all of your typical staples but I was looking for local treasures which some have. We declined the high price of white pineapple only available late August each year. All farmer's markets charged the same price of $3.00 per pound with the average weight per pineapple of 4 pounds. That would be $12.00 for ONE pineapple!!! They are delicious but that's a bit pricey. BUT I found an end cap display of a few white pineapples at one of their locations for $2.00 per pound so it was only $8.00!!! SOLD and delicious as expected.

Logan C.

Yelp
Good Store with a variety of products and snacks. good service and a variety of chips and foreign goods that we could not get in California.

Marissa N.

Yelp
This should be the winner of the grocery store with the best view in the world. For real if it's a contest this local wins.

Sean R.

Yelp
The KTA market is in the resort area of Keauhou Bay. They have everything you need for your stay in the area. I bought food from the deli and seafood counter. They have daily fresh Poke with reasonable pricing. If you're in doubt, they will let you try it before buying. Great alternative to the resort restaurants.

Tom D.

Yelp
A group of us were in Hawaii for eight days and this KTA served us really well the entire time. Bought most of our "day to day" items here. The selection is good, you may find some items a few cents cheaper at Saveway but you won't get the friendly, helpful service like you do at KTA. Where KTA really excels is the fresh food area. The poke, deli, sandwich area is far better than other supermarkets and the prices are very reasonable. Before we all did an afternoon of snorkeling we had lunch here. A large delicious filling poke bowl of your choice for less than 10 bucks... Yes please! Made several trips here during our stay and always found the store clean with excellent customer service.

John H.

Yelp
Was expecting something nicer than a typical Foodland. This places closes way earlier. The deli area was closed at 6:30 and didn't have any great options for dinner. Nothing! Yogurt section was cleaned out. Only flavored stuff left. Picked up a few things for breakfast and ended up doing take out close by. Wish Foodland was closer.

Stacy C.

Yelp
Skip the Targets and Safeway's! This is the grocery store to go to. And make sure you pick up some Korean Style Poke. The best!!

Christopher G.

Yelp
I'm not a fan - fish counter just not that helpful. Had no interest in selling us sushi rice for the meal or one of their sauces they had in abundance for their poke bowl (we already had the fish). You can tell a good grocery by how helpful they are - this one isn't

The S.

Yelp
6 things we bought from here were EXPIRED! 6! We spent about $550 on our groceries for the week. $7 for a box of cereal. Over $7 for ice cream. Horrible produce. Go to Wal-Mart, Costco, and Target instead. We made a big mistake going here on our vacation. Would never shop here again.

Toni T.

Yelp
Most beautifully placed grocery store right next to the ocean with the sunsets that are spectacular. Big selection- bakery and deli were small though.

Min H.

Yelp
Wish they had one of these Stateside. They carry a good mix American and Hawaiian snacks and foods. Loved being able to come by in the morning to grab some breakfast or a packed lunch for our hikes. They make fresh Spam Musubi and Sandwhiches daily.

Joanna Z.

Yelp
The store has a good selection and a very nice array of good-tasting pre-made foods, but I want to complain about the sandwiches. Is the deli manager trying for a company award for saving money? Sandwiches have gotten so chintzy. Meat contents measure about 2 tablespoons. Tuna content is less than half the amount they used to be; it's tuna flavored bread. All the sandwiches at the outer edge are all bread. Go to a deli instead.

Edgar C.

Yelp
Great store with everything you need, especially great gifts to bring back home to the mainland. Big fan and great food selection.

Madison M.

Yelp
So a lady was trying to use her EBT card for a food but was denied by a young gentleman cashier. We all know that hot food is not approved but this time, it wasn't a hot or a warmed food. It was seafood. Other KTA stores do accept this, but thousands of us were wondering why!

Casey K.

Yelp
Not sure how this compares to other local grocery stores in the area, but it was great to have this place so close (1 min drive, 5min walk) from the Kona Coast Resort 2 where we were staying. Typical grocery store, with a variety of items, including fresh based goods, meat/seafood, and beer/wine/liquor. Plenty of parking in strip mall parking lot, enough lines and cashiers kept the lines moving.

Joe M.

Yelp
Ok so I went in with the intern Of buying 1 item, so I did not have a basket. While I was shopping I saw several more items I wanted, so instead of going to the front of the store for a cart I put the items in my shopping bag. Not a great idea because a few employees gave me stink eye. I got to the register and told the cashier, sorry I thought I only wanted one item but wound up buying 10, so I did not have a cart. She said well that is our store policy so in the future get a cart. I said oh ok, she again repeated that store policy, not well thanks for purchasing more than you came for, we appreciate your patronage. So therefore from now on I will shop at Choice Mart, better quality better service and no stink eye for buying more than you came for, or for NOT using a cart or store basket, see ya KTA!

Cesar R.

Yelp
Hold up. wait a gawdamn minute....the milk here costs HOW much!? AND it's on SALE!? http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/PHKDW2Cvqu-AOjnEVEkxUw?select=tvlchnOABHn4AnFOFX1Kng Needless to say...I left with a 12 pack of beer instead. oh. and this is for all my alcoholic hello kitty fans.... http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/PHKDW2Cvqu-AOjnEVEkxUw?select=46JzUxVJEP6FeM_VQp3qMQ It'll get ya drunk!

Brittany S.

Yelp
I've said it once and I'll say it again - I love grocery shopping. My love for this "chore for some" is at an all time high when I find myself on unfamiliar turf with new products available for me to explore and sample. While in Kona, I couldn't stand the thought of visiting Target or CostCo, so I opted to check out the Yelp-recommended Japanese chain market, KTa. Our visit to the market was more like a tourist activity than your standard fill the fridge agenda item. Highlights: -yes, prices are high but that's a Hawaii thing and not a KTa thing -head to the bakery and fill a box with a variety of Hawaiian-style pastries like Malasadas (Portuguese doughnuts), coconut turnovers, taro puffs and Macadamia nut danishes. The bakery worker was uber friendly and let us try the Malasada before purchasing (I told her I was going to buy it anyways ;) --the local standing next to us insisted that Malasadas be accompanied by a cup of Kona coffee -don't miss the aisle filled with 15+ types of Spam - whether you like Spam or not, it's definitely worth checking out -fresh leis available for purchase in the mini florist section in the back left corner of the store -try a fruit you've never had before - we purchased Island oranges and two different types of papaya -you MUST NOT leave this store without picking up some pineapple salsa. Holy jamoly, I want to take some back to Indiana. It's worth the splurge of $8 - I promise. -check out the guava bread loaves - not only are they like 2 feet long but bright pink to top it off (also available as buns)
