"How did it strike you on arrival? Maybe it’s the verdant gardens that surround the property or the old-school design of the main building, which was once a 19th-century manor house. The airy front porch with its wicker rocking chairs might be the reason. Or even the coral-colored paint job, which help the white shutters perk up ever so slightly. Whatever the reason, the vibe at Royal Palms Hotel, a small City of Hamilton hotel, is uniquely tropical and classically Bermudian—one without a significant price tag. Tell us a bit more about its history. Built in 1903, the Royal Palms was once a private home, and many of its original architectural and decorative features are still present today. In fact, walking through its lobby and public spaces is akin to wandering through your wealthy grandmother’s living room: Oriental rugs cover creaky wood-paneled floors, tufted sofas and chairs sit next to elegant Victorian-style furniture, and walls with crown molding feature gold-framed paintings of dreamy Bermuda landscapes. Tell us all about the accommodations. What can we expect from the rooms? Not surprisingly, the décor of the 32 rooms is right in line with the rest of this über-traditional hotel. You’ll find antique-style hardwood furniture, flowery drapes and bed skirts, and hearty sitting chairs. Most have kitchenettes with a microwave, refrigerator, toaster oven, and wet bar, and some have a shared patio or porch. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? There's free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Any good dining options on the premises, or should we venture elsewhere? Ascot is the main fine dining restaurant, and although some locals swear by this place, you’ll get a far better meal if you simply take the five-minute walk into the City of Hamilton. The good news is you won’t have to go very far for your morning coffee since the hotel provides a complimentary continental breakfast of the usual suspects (yogurt, baked goods) in addition to free glasses of red and white wine with light bites during evening happy hour. And the service? This is a folksy kind of place run by locals who’ve been working here for years, so expect service with a smile from Bermudians who very much care about your stay. What type of travelers will you find here? Budget travelers looking to save a few bucks, business travelers who favor the central address, and older couples who enjoy the hotel’s laid-back simplicity. How does it fit into the surrounding neighborhood? Considering the Royal Palms is a five-minute walk to the City of Hamilton’s shops, restaurants, and attractions, you’ll have the best of Bermuda’s big-city life at your doorstep. Is there anything you'd change? The kidney-shaped pool is the size of a large hot tub—read: tiny—and you’re about 15 minutes from the closest beach. Anything else stand out about the hotel? You might be nowhere near the water, but the grounds here significantly make up for the lack of ocean view. In fact, the hotel’s well-manicured gardens are one of the loveliest places to take a quiet stroll—they’re overflowing with frangipani, oleander, and bougainvillea, plus fruit trees like avocado, banana, lime, guava, and loquat, all of which guests are encouraged to pick from. Bottom line: Why would you recommend this one, and who for? If an affordable, centrally located stay is what you crave, you can’t do much better than this old-school manor house in the City of Hamilton." - David LaHuta

Spent the tail end of December and early January in Bermuda. It was our first visit. The Royal Palms was a perfect hotel in every way. The entire staff was welcoming and made the stay as easy and relaxing as possible. ||With easy access to downtown Hamilton by foot, you could easily catch a bus all over the island or take the ferry to either end of the island. The restaurants in Hamilton were incredible with Devi's Isle being the top as we visited twice and also had a great New Year's Eve meal at Bolero.||The morning continental breakfasts were excellent and we especially enjoyed our conversations with Boli during the breakfasts. He provided excellent recommendations and just a general warm atmosphere for all the guests, but he particularly made our family feel right at home.

The hotel is just outside Hamilton, with a beautiful garden, two resident cats on the grounds and the friendliest staff you could imagine. Everyone was professional and accommodating, especially in helping us with our excursions through Bermuda and to restaurants in the evening. The on-site restaurant, ascots, is also very fine. We couldn’t have been better served or happier with our choice. Highly recommended.

Very quaint boutique hotel with beautiful grounds. Clean and Ascots on site restaurant delicious with amazing service. This is a good option for downtown Hamilton. You can walk to Hamilton Princess down a hill but then back up can be steep and a tight road. Jason, shuttle driver, was so available and took us anywhere we needed to go on front street so we never had to make the walk. FYI: The halls have no A/C but rooms are well cooled. For the price point, the only disappointment were the ants were quite bad in our room but told the front desk and they were going to treat. I get this is an island but we did not have this issue at Azura days before. The people make this place............they are lovely and try very hard to meet expectations. The breakfast is nice with a sandwich choice each day, sausage/egg mcmuffin, sausage/egg/cheese croissant, quiche - but one day they ran out of quiche before breakfast ended at 930am. Pool area nice and cleaned each day. I would stay here again just know it is not a luxury resort. Good stay.

We absolutely loved our week long stay at The Royal Palms hotel . Everyone of the staff goes out of their way to ensure a perfect vacation . We had a chilling bottle of wine for our 40th anniversary . We dined at Ascots often. . The breakfast and wine and cheese was so nice to meet guests and socialize .. the pool and comfy chaises and towels were just right . The shuttle into town was appreciated! The room was cleaned and appointed so beautifully each day . We would go back and give more stars if we could !

I get the charming, trip back in time is the idea behind the royal palms, but then the mind boggles at how it can be worth 650 a night. The room I was put in was stuck in the middle of the hotel, tiny window with a feel of remodeled storage cupboard. The breakfast was terrible. Hardly any choice at all. Also, it didn't match the hotel that they had a coffee machine instead of home brewed. Those machines use powered milk, not good and seemed entirely against what the hotel stood for. Location is great though, and the staff lovely.

My husband and I have had the pleasure of staying at the Royal Palms this past week. If you are looking for a boutique hotel with character and charm with the very best team to wait on you, look no further. We were made to feel like Royalty . We were well attended to by everyone from the front desk team ( I do wish I could remember everyone's names ) to those who came by to clean our room ( 5 star cleanliness ) , to waiters at the restaurant. Breakfast in the morning was more than adequate to fuel us for a day of sight seeing. Thank you Bali for your smile in the morning as we sat down to breakfast in the delightful sunroom viewing the garden. We will definitely recommend Royal Palms to friends and family and we certainly plan on being returning guests, like so many that we met at the evening wine social. Thank you everyone ! Our stay at the Royal Palms Hotel was absolutely outstanding . The hotel itself was so beautiful with old Bermudian charm. Everyroom, restaurant, breakfast area, bar, hotel rooms, the pool area and the exceptional well manicured hotel grounds were just so inviting and warm. From the minute we arrived we were treated to the most amazing service. Tthe most amazing part of staying at this exceptional hotel was the hotel Staff. I wish I could remember everyone's name however I will point out 3 that I do. Theresa, GM, Jade and Prisana that ran the hotel were the abosolute best. They | were just so friendly and so helpful with our many questions. They provide top notch service during our stay. The bar, restaurant, room service and grounds people were such a delight and so extremely friendly. There was a married couple that ran the bar and restaurant they were amazing. I so wish I could remember both their names as we so enjoyed our converstations with them and their service was impecable. We only had one week at this gem but wish we could have stayed longer. One day soon we will be back. Thank you to everyone for giving us a wonderful week in Bermuda!!! ||Barbara Breen and Jill Clauson Munro

This hotel is a true gem, a real Bermudian delight. Every detail, from the breezy common areas, bedroom suite, breakfast/meals, drinks, the gardens, the pool and the exercise room were beautiful! The most amazing quality of the venue was its staff. The owner, concierge, waitstaff, gardeners, bartender and housekeeping were kind, charming and made us feel very special for what was a milestone-anniversary- stay. The Royal Palms was better than we’d even hoped, a great way to experience Bermuda.
