"Japanese cuisine (and culture) would not be as prevalent as it is today in Portland without the work of Gabe Rosen, who led the way in opening izakayas (Biwa), late-night ramen shops (Noraneko), and now Giraffe, his own version of a beloved Japanese convenience store. Giraffe is parked inside of Cargo, a 2,000-square-foot home furnishings store in Inner Southeast Portland, where, coincidentally, most of the city’s high-end furniture stores, and Rosen’s other projects, are located. Rosen curated the items in Giraffe with the stuff you’d expect to find at a Lawson’s in Shibuya. Guests who walk in are greeted by a deli case of sandwiches, including egg salad and tonkotsu; an impressive spread of chips and sweets; and yes, drinks like Pocari Sweat."

So far the best Japanese style egg salad sandwich I’ve found in America. I mow through these whether it’s Lawson’s, Family Mary, or anywhere else in Japan and while this one didn’t appear to have the same texture it didn’t matter since it was excellent. Honourable mention to the half soft boiled egg in the middle which -I think- was seasoned with shoyu similar to that of the ones you find in ramen. Maybe it wasn’t seasoned but it was perfectly cooked. I also opted for the combo alternate half of katsu and that was great too. When checking out I noticed they had karaage and of course you can’t not order karaage when it’s warm and ready to go. While the pieces were kinda large (not bad) the batter didn’t look great so I didn’t have high hopes but pleasantly surprised how great that also was. The seasoning was super on point -I just wish it came with some sauce for dipping. Fast and friendly; check it out!

This place is an amazing one-stop Japanese food delight - especially for those who like to both eat AND cook Japanese. Personally I am both, so I enjoyed the selection of simple, well-executed Japanese classics (Kara-age, miso soup, vegetable curry, bentos, sandwiches, etc) along with the pantry and household goods area which had virtually all of the dry good requirements to make many Japanese meals, or to simply add Japanese flavors to your current cooking. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful - knowledgable about both the food they were serving as well as ideas and recipes for the amazing ingredient selection!

Tonkatsu tamago (pork & egg) sandwich is a classic choice, brings back so many memories of going down the local conbini (Japanese convenience store) for a quick bite. We also tried the curry and kara-age (fried chicken), which was delicious and served straight from the owner. A cute store within a store with authentic traditional meals, lots of Japanese snacks and baked goods from Oyatsupan. Great for lunch or happy hour— we were their first official beer sale and they were stocking lots of sake! With not a lot of seating, its more of a takeout place. Looking forward to becoming a regular ❤️

I enjoyed the Japanese sando I had a Giraffe. I basically went out of my way to visit. I visited on Saturday afternoon somewhat hungry. After walking around Cargo, I bought the combo sandwich that consists of one half katsu and the other half egg salad. The woman (who I believe is part owner) taking the order was friendly and easy to talk to. I didn’t expect a seating area but there is one with one table that seats 6-8 people and counter seating looking out the windows. When it comes to the food, the sandwiches were good. I appreciated the orange yolk soft-boiled egg in the sandwich. While it wasn’t my favorite egg salad sandwich ever it was pretty good. I actually enjoyed the katsu sandwich more. I noticed Giraffe sells other food items as well and if I visited again I would try them out as well. Overall, it's a good place to pick up some good Japanese sandwiches.

Love Giraffe! Service is the best and the food is awesome. Sake and beer choices are great. Convenient and quick. So many yummy food and grocery choices. Sometimes there is a cute little Doxie visiting. Love that little guy!

So much to love! The sake collection is so good and I can't wait to go back and try the curry pan. It's as good a find as any outside of Japan.
