On the Grid : Christie’s

"It all started in St James’s with the sale of a pair of pillowcases and a chamber pot, but 250 years later this auction house has turned into global art powerhouse. Visit their public galleries to see the best works in the world before they pass from one collector to another. Caters for all tastes." - dn&co.

"Meanwhile, courtesy of the young Nigerian-British curator Aindrea Emelife, and coinciding with Black History month in the U.K., Christie’s King Street galleries are exhibiting “Bold, Black, British.” The show, which runs from October 1-22, will feature works by 27 Black British artists, from the pioneering Sonia Boyce to the Malawi-born multimedia artist Samson Kambalu."

A place to know! I visited a before-auction exhibition for free and it was well worth it to see the paintings and jewellery close up before they get auctioned away. The building itself is very central London style. I can recommend following these exhibitions as one can easily see art which otherwise doesn't land in museums!

Fantastic auction house! Very welcoming and helpful. Visited as an opportunity to view Mark Knopfler's fantastic guitar (and gear) collection being offered on auction. Very knowledgeable team around were happy to explain details on requested item and the auction process. Definitely worth following...

Hard to judge this as what Iam about to write about is no longer there - due to be sold at auction on 31Jan24. We went up to London to see the collection as was a big 80s fan of the band. The staff are so nice and helpful. I had a long chat with the lady who put the catalogue together - she knew her stuff! I like how they had set out the guitars, allowed a close look and take loads of pics. Some places can get "sniffy" eg you cant afford this stuff (true) but not here, staff treated all the public as an important visitor. My only slight complaint is that they had not set up an area for visiotrs to do some "air guitar" licks! Entry was free - I always look out for auction viewings as it is a free "museum". If in London worth checking out if they have anything on show.

They are running online ads, offering free valuations while phishing for personal details, contact numbers and email addresses. You are then getting bombarded with newsletters and other spam. As for the valuation, their reply is that they wouldn't deal with such "insignificant value". What an utter disgrace. Stay away.

Christie's is obviously a historic institution, one of the top auctioneers of fine art and antiquities in the world. They do a very nice job of showcasing their upcoming work, providing friendly staff, and doing so for all to see. Definitely worth a visit, especially if they have something you're interested in.

I went to see the George Michael Exhibition before it was auctioned off for charity (a worthy act from a worthy man). Pity a U.K. museum couldn’t have taken the complete collection as it was outstanding... The gallery/auction house is over several floors and occasionally in separate buildings. This isn’t stuffy and intimidating, staff are reassuring in their presence and friendly, as you would imagine, so if you ever see an ‘open house’ and would like to look at Pre-Sale art don’t hesitate (you might actually end up buying something too!)

A fabulous experience to visit the regular (and free) exhibitions at Christie’s and see artwork that is often not usually available to the public. Worth giving them a follow on Instagram to get updated on when they are showing artwork before an auction. They had a brilliant Art of the Surreal exhibition on for 3 days in March, featuring Picasso’s ‘La Fenêtre Ouverte’ (the open window) which was remarkable. It was also absolutely magical to see Franz Marc’s ‘The Foxes’ which was beautifully displayed, and later sold for £42.5 million. They have a maze of rooms with longer-running exhibitions and even more incredible art as well, and I am very much looking forward to seeing their current ‘Art of Literature’ collection which runs until 15th July 2022. For an avid art fan, a visit to Christie’s is a must. The staff are really great too. Sadly Christie’s is not open on weekends.
