Apologies in advance for the novel lol
My wife had been wanting to try this restaurant for a while. Oh boy, what a major disappointment, not only by the quality of the food, but also the overall service.
We ordered three appetizers, the Barbes trio, briouats and the crevette diablo, out of which the most "flavorful" were the briouats and the hummus from the trio. Everything else had zero flavor, especially the crevette diablo which was in a harrisa based sauce. No pop, nothing. Also, the bread they served to eat with the dips was burnt and like cardboard. Wife pointed out the bread was burnt, our server Omar (very, very obnoxious, who supposedly "knows" Moroccan food and the reason for the 1-star for service) said he would get us some baguette, which was also somewhat burnt. He had to nerve to say, that it tastes good like that. Like.. what?
When the host came over asking how things were, in addition to telling him about the flavorless appetizers, my wife showed him the bread, to which he remarked, oh it's burnt. LOL! So you have Omar who tried to convince us burnt bread is good, totally contradicting the host, who was much more gracious and willing to listen to what we were saying about the food than our server.
Anyway, we also ordered the Barbes Royale entree to share. Wife wanted to just pay for what we had and leave, but decided to stay for the entree. Boy I wish we had left :( Other than the merguez, everything else had no flavor -- the chicken, lamb and the couscous. They provided a broth to pour over the couscous to give it flavor... guess what? The broth had no flavor!
In the end, we told the host that we did NOT enjoy our food. He asked if we had Moroccan before. I told him we've been to Morocco and are very familiar with Moroccan cuisine. He tried to tell us, it's not going to taste the same here in the US. We've been too many Moroccan restuarants, particularly in the tri-state area, which had flavorful, good food. Omar was nearby trying to argue this is Morocan food, intimating we don't know what Moroccan food is. This is the guy trying to convince us burnt cardboard pita is good! LOL! Very disrespectful, dismissive attitude.
