A Madison mainstay since the 1990s, Sa-Bai Thong turns out textbook curries, noodles, and tofu dishes at its University Avenue flagship (with a West Side sibling). Cited by Madison Magazine’s Best of Madison and listed by Isthmus, the restaurant also cooks at the Sala Thai Festival, underscoring its local cultural ties.

Google
No frills clean place that is best described by the menu and the food. Service is also spot on and they are happy to discuss items on menu what they like and what is similar . So don't be shy. Everything we ordered was excellent and so tasty. My husband thought the Thai iced tea was better than other places. Thicker in constitution. We had the drunken noodles, green curry and Pad-z-ew. Flavors were so good and this is now amongst my top 2 places that I will use as a bar to compare other Thai food to The owner also seems to know all her patrons and was hugging people and talking to them on first name basis. Love that type of establishment. We will visit for sure everytime we are in the area.

Google
this was the best dinner i’ve had in a while. the restaurant itself is super cute and lively. food was OUTSTANDING and i noticed a lack of grease with everything which i love. the woman serving us was super pleasant and sweet. also there’s NO dairy in any of their food i’m told. almost everything is available for or already vegan. so so good will come back. screwdriver, peanut curry, spring rolls, and the mango sticky rice were all 10/10

Google
This place has so much potential but the food was a little bit of a letdown. First the good: - The servers were very friendly and served everything with a very positive attitude - The jungle curry was fantastic - the gui chai (chive dumpling) was yummy - they have a vegan version of everything The bad - Tom kha soup was good, but had only mushrooms (plus tofu since we ordered the vegan version), no other veggies - The drunken noodles didn't seem drunken enough (there was not much sauce) - the veggie spring rolls and veggie summer rolls were both so-so The ugly: - Everything was sweet - the sauces were all sweet - it didn't feel like Thai spicy 😂 As I said, this place can become so much more.

Google
10 out of 10 restaurant is very cool waitress and service was outstanding and all of the food was excellent. Everybody was very pleased with their meals. Price was reasonable as well would go again. should also mention the portion sizes were quite good.

Google
Stopped in nearing closing time (about 45 minutes before close), btu they were happy to seat us and take our orders. I ordered a dish and asked for level 3 spicy, and it came out with the exact perfect amount of spice. Just enough to get the sinuses open, not enough to burn. And the overall taste of the food was amazing.

Google
Wonderful place and the food is out of this world! We were in Madison visiting family and I wanted some good authentic Thai food. I found this place on Google and thought we try it. No regret! The people were nice and the food is super good! The only thing I wished I have asked for is for them to make my dishes much more spicy. :)

Google
Food was soooooo good. I really like how they give you 4 choices of levels, of heat in yr food. Atmosphere & service was GREAT! Services very knowledgeable of the menu.

Google
A few favorite among my top Asian restaurants. The food here is fantastic! I love their Yum Ta-Wai and Pad Jadet. The prices are extremely reasonable and you get an appropriate portion for the food. The service is decent but on ocassion you have to take initiative to get water refilled or get your check. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, has plenty of seating and has a prominent take-out system. They have a large free parking lot, have plenty of vegetarian options and are wheelchair accessible and ADA compliant.

Yelp
The 4 of us had 3 delicious entrees. Pad Thai, Volcano, and a curry. All with chicken. Great service. Good place for a casual date night.

Yelp
Was excited to try this place after feedback from a Foodie Group. Got the Pad Thai w/ chicken and shrimp. Shrimp was a bit overcooked (would have loved to have the tails already off since it was in with the noodles). Not a lot of flavor. Underwhelmed. The crab rangoon was good. Different flavor profile, I think they add cilantro. Sticky rice and mango was great. Friendly service, clean establishment. So many places to get thai, would probably try something new before going back here.

Yelp
They can make many dishes gluten free! The servers are super friendly and the food always comes out very quick. I love their pad Thai!

Yelp
This is a solid restaurant if you are in the mood for Thai cuisine while in the Madison area. Lots of great options for people who are gluten-free/celiac. However, I've always found their food to be slightly disappointing. They come up a bit short in terms of flavor and presentation. Service is very good, however and I recommend the plum wine they have on their menu.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was great. The Gui Chai came first and made us anxious for the incoming dishes. We weren't disappointed. The Tom Ka made us sit back and say, "ah, yes." The Larb and the Pad Thai were very good, too. They have an area that displays traditional Thai items and wall decorations also add to the ambiance. The only negative, which isn't much, is that our server made us wait a bit longer than what I think should be normal. Keep in mind that at no point of my career did I work in a restaurant, so what's normal for me may not be the standard. Nevertheless, I'm a very patient person. Despite any negative, I will gladly return for more. Not only was the good delicious, but the total bill was much lower than we expected. I don't get to Madison often but this restaurant makes me want to find any reason to travel here.

Elaina R.

Yelp
The food at Sa-Bai Thong is fine--not bad, but nothing particularly special either. The staff are incredibly kind and welcoming when you pick up, which is definitely a highlight of the experience. My only comment? Everything I tried seemed relatively sweet--noticeably more sweet than anything else. If you enjoy dishes with a sweeter flavor profile, this might be the spot for you, but I personally found it a bit unbalanced. Decent overall, but not a standout for me.

Yelp
We are visiting from CA. The food was absolutely delicious! The tofu and the noodles were very flavorful and the veggie egg roll was one of the best I've ever had! Highly recommend!

Yelp
I wasn't overly impressed by my experience here but it was enough to satisfy the thai craving, particularly in Madison. We were served fairly quickly - the restaurant wasn't crowded on a Friday evening. We ordered the crab rangoon as an appetizer and the pad see ew with tofu and fried rice with shrimp as our entrees. The crab rangoon was well worth the price, we got 3 massive pieces and each was filled with a looot of cream cheese!! The dipping sauce was some sort of house made sauce, not the normal sweet chili that I was expecting. The pad see ew was okay - not my favorite esp since I prefer my noodles to be saucier. But the tofu was done really well! I preferred the fried rice over the noodles tbh and felt like it had more flavor in each bite. The shrimp was plentiful, they def didn't skimp out on that. It did take a while for our server to give us our check before we could leave but overall was satisfied with my experience here.
google avatar

Yelp
I placed an order online for dinner on a Friday. They said 35 minutes: I showed up 15 minutes late, and it still took them another 20 to get my food ready. I ordered my pad kee mao with the maximum spice level, but it showed zero spicy. The portion size was decent with plenty of beef, but the meat quality was low, the dish was much too tart, and it was lacking on basil. My wife's pad see ew was bland. I don't think I'll be back.
google avatar

Cameron Q.

Yelp
We ordered chicken satay, and dumplings as appetizers. They were delicious. The chicken satay was so juicy. I think it needed the peanut sauce. The chicken itself was not heavily marinated. I guess it was probably you had to it with the sauce. The dumplings were fried very well. There was also an option for you to steam the dumplings instead of fry. As for entrees, I got number 45. My boyfriend got fried rice with pork and his friend got number 41. 41 and 45 were curries. The curries were very creamy due to coconut milk. Our friend asked for spicy level 3 but I think they forgot adding the hot sauce because it was not spicy at all for him. He still enjoyed the curry though. The fried rice was nice as well. As for my order, number 45, it was spicy. I got level 2. I could tolerate it but it was definitely spicier than our friend's curry. I got catfish as the protein. I would not recommend catfish at all because I think they used frozen catfish because you could smell it. The curry had great flavor though. Definitely will come back other dishes.

Yelp
This isn't my absolute favorite Thai restaurant in Madison, but I've never had a bad experience here. The food is always tasty, and so many options sound delicious, I have a hard time choosing what to get! My family loves Thai food, and we enjoy Sa-Bai Thong a lot! I'd recommend any of their curries. I will say, the portions aren't huge for the price. However, I think it's worth a visit.

Yelp
Ordered takeout. Came in and restaurant is clean and they were very friendly. Had no idea what was ordered but happily surprised.

John A.

Yelp
Service was great, and the appetizers are pretty good and unique. However, the pork was overcooked and dry, and the veggies were old and rotten. They are most likely using old ingredients that sit all day until the following day's meals.

Yelp
Delivery Review! I recently ordered from Sa-Bai Thong to deliver to the University Hospital up the street. I placed an ordered online and even though they said earliest deliveries would arrive at 6PM, when I called they were very accommodating to come at 5:45PM since I had a meeting. The hospital can be very complicated, but when driver called, he was super polite and was able to find his way. The food was wrapped very well. All plastic containers and for soups, the containers are wrapped in another plastic bag. Prices are very reasonable too. Food: I ordered the papaya salad, pork larb, and Tom Ka with chicken, all in fire spice level (there are 4 or 5 levels total). All were super delicious! My favorite was the pork larb hands down. The pork was juiced up with citrus-tangy goodness and the fire heat was totally there - I was sniffling and doing the mouth motions, 100% worth! I can't forget the onions and other herbs that really bring it all together into every delicious bite. Would order this for lunch everyday if I could!

Yelp
The restaurant dine in was great with the staff interactions and variety of food selections. It was a really nice place at both location I visited. The food tasted great. I had the duck curry and it tasted fresh with good combination of flavors. My friend had another curry and he enjoyed it very much. On the other hand the food could also taste bland. I ordered a salmon in banana leaf and expecting it to add more flavors or presentation but was dissatisfied. The fish was bland and it was only steam cook with the banana leaf, which is the proper way to use the leaf. But the leaf just get in the way, combine that with a bland item made the dish not worth it. I tried online ordering as well. If you're using apps like Doordash or Uber Eats you have a more narrow selection for food. The food tasted just as good as the restaurant dine-in but some of the items I know they had was not on any apps. It's a good restaurant if you want to try authentic curry and taste of other traditional Thai food. But I wouldn't wander outside of those two selections

Yelp
Although basic of me to get the Pad Thai, I still enjoyed it very much! The taste was pretty darn good (4/5) but the portion size was perfect (5/5). It was just enough to fulfill my hunger but not reach to the point of being too full where I couldn't walk/need to take home. Furthermore, I think our server was the owner? Not quite sure but she was so friendly and made the experience so much better (5/5). Lovely ambience and space (4.5/5). Overall I gotta give it a 5/5 for being a wonderful experience for me in Madison! Definitely will come back once more before I leave. P.S. my friend had one of the curries (I forgot which) with coconut milk and it was sooooo good... I might get that next time too
google avatar

Katie K.

Yelp
I reeeeeeally like this place...but they're inconsistent. Their crab Rangoon is really good. The rest of the apps I've had are fine. Usually I love the soups, all of them! But sometimes they're sooooo bland. The fried rice is excellent, some of my favorite fried rice in the city. I also like the noodle dishes and specialities that I've had. The curry is much too thin and watery for me, though. Prices are reasonable. I've only had takeout and delivery so I can't say much about the space or the service but I've never had any issues. If they can improve their consistency they'll be great!

Yelp
I saw that it had good reviews so gave it a shot tonight, 06/23/2021 @19:00. Pros: good prices, delicious food. Cons: wait time for any kind of service was awful, the waitress/hostess had such an attitude that it overshadowed the experience. She made faces behind other customers backs, after she took our orders (food was delivered by the cook) and she only checked on our table once at the end to give us a check but forgot that we ordered desert a while ago and needed the only water refill that we got. Honestly one of the worst servers I've had and from what I heard from the other customers, they were not happy about it either. Truth is, the food was decent but with the service being as incredibly awful as it was, I'm sure the food can be comparable to any other Thai place in Madison. I won't be going here again.
google avatar

Sunina G.

Yelp
Love love love this place for its convenience (right next door) and for the food! My go to order are the egg rolls and the chicken fried rice (the one that comes with bamboo shoots) - adventure level spicy. This place gets the heat exactly right - most of the places I've tried in Madison tend to either overdo it or not put any heat at all. We've definitely tried a few other menu items over our visits and most of them are so good - the only one I was meh about we're the shrimp pockets on the appetizer list. Highly recommend checking this place out!
google avatar

Shawna L.

Yelp
Very nice great waitress she is cute and funny!!! I didint like the egg rolls though taste like cooked cabbage. Everything else was good the pho, green curry and summer rolls also the shrimp pockets
google avatar

Yelp
Our party of five was scrambling for a place to eat and we landed on Sa-Bai Thong and we are all so very happy we did. The waitstaff was super friendly and the older woman who was waiting on us was engaging, hilarious, honest, and helpful! We were looking for a place where we could have a nice evening, be heard while having conversations, and Sa-Bai Thong delivered on all counts. Our food varied from the crab rangoon, the fried rice, the chicken satay, potstickers, cucumber salad, fresh spring rolls, green curry, thai soup, and it was all excellent.
google avatar

Luis P.

Yelp
This is our first time trying this Thai restaurant. Ordered the Pad Thai and Pad Himapan chicken. Pad Thai was just the right mix of spicy and sweet. Ordered it with pork. Pork very lean and tasty. This dish as most dishes can be meatless. Pad Chicken resembled a typical cashew chicken dish. Pad Thai the more nuanced and interesting out of both meals. We also ordered summer rolls with shrimp. Very good except served with a plum sauce. Would have preferred peat nut sauce. No peanut allergies here. They gave a varied menu with many choices. I'd try this place again the next time I'm in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Gerald P.

Yelp
Very fresh food. The meal was well prepared. I had pad Thai so I was playing it safe. Crab ragoon was excellent.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
After 10 min of watching people getting served very slowly, like one single task at a time then they head to the back, im guessing it was the owner that walked up and demanded what we want to order. I tried to ask for hot tea and again asked what I want?! She meant what kind of tea and got mad when I asked options. This is just unacceptable customer service. I refuse to go to places now that can't be decent to you. It's too expensive to go out to eat for poor service and attitude.
google avatar

Yelp
I decided to go to this place for lunch, I had seen it for years and never had the chance to try them out. Since I like Thai food, I thought it was a good idea to try it out. The restaurant was aesthetically appealing, it was clean and smelled delicious! So I was excited to get some grub. Sat down and ordered 1 Eggroll and 1 Springroll..................I thought for the price there would at least be two of them...However, they were tasty, and gone before I got out my phone. Then I ordered Veggie Soup, Side salad and Chicken Pad Thai. They all looked tasty, the soup had a strong Vinegar taste, which made the soup undesirable. The salad had a tasty dressing with peanut sprinkles. Really tasty. The Pad Thai, also had Peanut sprinkles on the side of the dish, however it was burnt, had a burn smell with it, and it all stuck together. Needless to say, I didn't eat it. The customer service was great. The waitress checked on me often in the short time I was there, and made sure my drink was refreshed. The experience was subpar, but I believe they deserve another chance, I will be back!

Kay R.

Yelp
Been going there for years and I have always enjoyed the food. Portions are smaller, but I don't need tons of leftovers. Thanks.
google avatar

Carol S.

Yelp
Lovely atmosphere inside--the colors, decor and partions always make it feel intimate. Staff still masked. Pleasant and attentive staff on a Sunday night, despite a busy carry-out/to-go business. Food cooked to order. Pad Thai was good but not amazing. Restroom was clean. There was outdoor dining available.

Carl S.

Yelp
Sa-Bai Thong offers delicious gluten free and vegan curries. I appreciate their customer service too - I screwed up an online order and they were kind enough to change it for me when I called to correct it.

Theresa J.

Yelp
The pad thai wasn't bad. It was a last min decision based on availability. If I had to order from here again I wouldn't mind as a last resort.

Bernard W.

Yelp
Two of us come here every couple months and share a curry dish and some appetizers (crab rangoon, spring/summer rolls, pot stickers). Nice service, tasty food, and a pleasant environment. One heck of a quality meal for the price.

Scott S.

Yelp
Always an amazing experience! We ordered delivery and it was piping hot and fresh. NEVER a disappointment. Thanks
google avatar

Claire C.

Yelp
The food here is so good! Was able to easily get a table for 5 at 1pm on a Sunday, and the service was great. The menu was huge, will definitely be back to explore more of the menu.

S B.

Yelp
Stopped through town and found this as the only option at 8:00 on a Monday. We loved the food. A lot more authentic options than most Thai places like this
google avatar

Maximillian L.

Yelp
Sa bai Thong is getting worse and worse. It's like they just stopped caring altogether. Ordered a vegetable curry with 8 star "spicy". They put it on the container but it STILL tasted like ZERO stars. Owner and Waitresses discriminate against gay and black! Madison Civil Rights has been called. Cute of you to delete the review. We will see if you're a nice Thai or not! I've been going here for over ten years. Now that Curry in the Box has opened near the new Hilldale, and respects vegan people and uses organic tofu, I doubt I'll be back. Bai bai!! I

Yelp
I am a Thai food fiend and grew up right down the street from Sa-Bai Thong (hashtag blessed!). So, I never understand why Thai restaurants are reliably underrated. My guess is that there is such a large menu that people don't know what to order so they assume 1-2 dishes they order are representative of the 50+ items on the menu. So alas, here I come to rescue you from making this mistake. As a general note, I recommend ordering at least one curry and one noodle dish to get a bit of variety. Best to order with a group and share everything! Fave Apps: spring rolls, summer rolls and satay Curries: 44b add chicken, 47b chicken add green beans Noodles: 37 pad-z-you with beef and 32 pad Thai with chicken or shrimp Soup: Tom Ka with chicken or shrimp - it is great alone or over rice Desert: mango sticky rice, duh!! Overall: 9/10

Yelp
First of all, their best dish in my opinion was the roast duck curry, which they got rid of recently to my disappointment. The replacement mango chicken dish is a far cry from the duck. Second, and more importantly, a word of advice for those getting takeout here -- I was a frequent customer here, spending at least half a grand here every year on average. There's an old lady working here, who doesn't speak good English that told the young lady taking my order to charge my card twice for $34.50 on 02/09/2022, so I ended up getting charged $69 instead. I showed them through my credit card notifications on my phone that I got charged twice, and they said it will get resolved. In the end, I never got refunded for getting erroneously charged, and more disappointingly, my credit card company was unable to successfully resolve this issue through a dispute. I wouldn't be surprised if the manager refused to refund me because those taking my order denied charging me twice, and of course, one would rather believe their staff than their customer. If you order takeout here, only go through the online ordering system so that there's a paper trail, and you won't be able to get charged twice. There might be discrimination if you order takeout in person as I felt. If you think you were mischarged, ask for the manager so that you can explain clearly what had happened. I'm sorry I did not get names or any type of confirmation. I had thought at this type of restaurant that these petty things wouldn't occur in the first place, but I'm done wasting time and effort trying to get my money back. At first, I thought this was a minor mistake, but now it's clear that they're making this a headache for me. Times are hard and I get it, especially for restaurants, and I would be happy to donate the amount if the restaurant tried being honest with me and admitting they made a mistake. Instead for their doggedness, Sa-bai Thong, can keep the paltry sum, but I am deeply disappointed, won't be back, and can no longer recommend this restaurant. I only hope service can improve from here.

Yelp
My favorite place after long day at work. authentic Thai food and fresh singha are the best! If I could I would like to stop by Sa-Bai Thong everyday
google avatar

Prayash B.

Yelp
I would highly recommend the crispy fried duck curry here. It is just mouth watering good food. The shrimp purse was good and the stuffed wings were very unique. The stuffed chicken wings had ground pork inside it, and I never had something like that before. The second time we were here, we tried out some vegetarian yellow and green curry, and weren't as impressed. I would suggest first time goers to definitely stick with adventurous options, as all the dishes we found interesting were delicious.
google avatar

Caelynn H.

Yelp
This place is the only place where I can get massaman curry, and it is incredible! Spicy as I get it at a 4* level but it is served typically mild, savory, and a bit sweet, it hits every craving that I have for thai food. They have so many other curries, as well as the staples like Pad Thai or Tom Yum soup. Their spring and summer rolls, as well as the shrimp purses, are a treat, and alone might even be worth the trip out! This is hands down my favorite Thai restaurant in Madison. Check it out!
google avatar

Anah C.

Yelp
I literally just walked out of the building and can't wait for my next trip! To start, the service is spectacular. Our server was attentive and very sweet. She gave us the perfect amount of check ins without being overwhelming, she took our dirty dishes away quickly, and gave us our check promptly. I wish everywhere I went had service this great - thank you! Now, the food. Where do I start? The presentation was beautiful and only rivaled by the fact that the food was some of the best I have had in town! I got the potstickers to start and they were perfectly cooked and savory. For my entree I got the Guey Teuy Tom Ka with shrimp and my boyfriend for the Pad Thai; seriously soo so good! The building itself is quaint, welcoming, and not cramped at all. Overall, very happy with our first experience.
google avatar

Nadine S.

Yelp
The green curry pasta is amazing! The squash curry is also delicious, as is the pad Thai. Honestly some of the best Thai food in Madison.

Greg S.

Yelp
Went here for the first time Sat. Decor was nice. Friendly staff. After traveling to Thailand I was needing my fix and this place delivered. Shrimp purse appetizer was great! Pad Thai was also good.

Yelp
You really can't go wrong with any of the items on the menu. Also a place that can satisfy most tastebuds from the picky eaters to the food snobs. This is also a great place to introduce those who only have had Chinese fast food. Trust me, their eyes will open and so will their tastebuds. Some of my all time favs are: roasted duck curry, Kra-prao and salmon cooked in banana leaf. Their appetizers are pretty tasty and some are fun like the shrimp purse (basically egg rolls bundled up in a cute pouch), meing sabai (mini lettuce wraps), gui chai (choice dumpling). I've had entire meals of just a variety of their appetizers (tapas-style, why not?). Service is pretty friendly but there has been a few times where they lack on checking back. So if you need anything or they missed an order, you'll need to just grab whoever comes by next cause there's a chance the next time you see your server, is when they hand you the bill.

Yelp
I don't drink the water without a straw anyway but lipstick stain on glass is careless
google avatar

Yash B.

Yelp
Padded-in-ketchup Thai Noodles with next to no veg, under-seasoned pork and a steamed, browned lime on top in a too-tight container and high vermicelli, low shrimp, fresh spring rolls. Adventure-level spicy is not too adventurous. Maybe I got the wrong end of the stick with this particular takeaway order or maybe the stick is just claiming to be American-Thai, not Thai-Thai or maybe I expect too much from life. Like more peanuts in Pad Thai, some cilantro, something not so sweet. Next time perhaps ...
google avatar

Jonathan L.

Yelp
Favorite Thai place in Madison. Highly recommend this place for entrees, appetizers and their Thai beer. Took my wife and brother here and everyone loved it. Please try this place, you will not regret it!!

Tony X.

Yelp
What you need to know: I really love this place but was very disappointed at one of the dishes I ordered. Ordered the steamed salmon and it came back extremely dry, non seasoned and as well as burnt. It was also the most expensive dish on the menu. Though this was my first time getting it, I'm sure it might be a fluke but I recommend another place that serves it better, better seasoned and quicker, the Lao restaurant. Otherwise this place is amazing for their duck curry hands down. Well crisp duck that is cooked to perfection.

Larry R.

Yelp
Picked up large order that was basically inedible. Heat was listed a mild, adventurous, and a couple of levels hotter. We like spicy so mild sounded bland. Chose adventurous. Both dishes were so very hot we had to dump them. Mine was a seafood dish and it was meager with little ingredients. The other dish was vegetarian and was so over spiced it was dumped. Ordered fried rice which was flavorless. No character and no taste. I would like to find one positive but for us there was none. Really really really bad.

Yelp
Decent service, good atmosphere, great food! If you are looking for thai type curries and dishes this is definitely worth the try! I was pleasantly surprised by the Som Tum appetizer which is a salad mixture of shredded green papaya, carrots, tomatoes, green beans, peanuts, and an awesome spicy limy juice type of dressing . It was a refreshing start to my meal! As far as their curries go, my personal favorite is the Veggie Pa-Naeng or the Roast Duck Curry. Game Changer Pro-Tip: Substitute the roast duck for your curry sauce of choice. The duck is really crispy and adds a lot of flavor and texture to your dish!
